Komatsuya San Diego Reviews from The Last Year
One of my go to spots.
I'm a picky eater but I've never had anything I didn't like at this restaurant. They always accomodate my dietary restrictions and service is excellent. Wait staff and chefs are very friendly. Sake selection is great also. Parking is not too difficult if you go there for early dinner.
This review is regarding our experience when Komatsuya
This review is regarding our experience when Komatsuya first opened a while back - unfortunately we haven't had a chance to return but hope to return soon! We overall had a wonderful Kaiseki experience that was comparably well priced. We did find that the nigiri/fish itself was a bit lower quality compared to other omakase spots in the area but not sure if that is still the case. Service was exemplary as was the ambiance.
We were in San Diego for work and decided to drop by.
Fair warning, it's not cheap. That being said, you get what you pay for. Amazing food, just really, really good. Great service, great find. Well recommended.
Great food and great services.
They can customize the food. Very traditional Japanese vibe.
I absolutely loved this place.
It's very true and authentic. The service was great. The ambiance is super chill and low key. It's definitely Michelin portions but completely worth it. I will be definitely coming back when the chefs come back from Japan for the omakase preselected chef menu
Start by saying the food is absolutely delicious.
The sake was fantastic and the Japanese IPA hit the spot. The only issue with the place is the ambiance. The fish coolers on the bar were empty, which just created a barrier between us and the chef. If you're not using them, just take them out. Also, would be great if they played Japanese Christmas/rock music instead of American or something. The menu is a bit confusing, too. You can make any Nigiri a maki roll but you have to ask, not stated on the menu--if you're sharing this makes it a lot easier to order. I get it, you don't want to be a Sushi Deli--please don't-- but you got to bend a little bit. Put the Maki rolls on the menu, put the "specials" board where everyone can see it, encourage some walk-in customers. The service was great, it's just a little boring. At one point I told my wife, "I'm going to stop whispering." Regardless, I'll be back, the food is way too good. Lastly, the prices were fair for high-end sushi, we paid significantly less than Hane for similar amount of food and drink. Go, you won't regret it.

Good sushi in Mission Hills! The cold dishes were a little hit or miss, but the sushi itself was really delicious. There weren't a ton of fish options, which was surprising considering how exquisite the sushi we ordered was and how talented our chef seemed. We especially liked the fatty tuna! The service was also incredible. Our waitress was kind, helpful, and on top of everything. There was never a point where we needed something she hadn't already offered. There weren't a ton of other customers dining when we went, which we quite liked. We were the only people seated at the sushi bar so we got a front row seat to the action. The restaurant's decor combined with its tranquility facilitated a perfect date night ambiance. I definitely recommend this spot.

The chef's set menu is divided into a regular set and a vegetarian set, each with eight categories. The following dishes were tasted: Sakizuke - Burrata cheese with sea urchin Zensai - Mung bean sprouts and pea trio, lightly sauteed oysters in soy sauce, mushrooms and crab Sashimi: Pan-seared amberjack, sea bass, soy-marinated bluefin tuna Fish: Steamed grouper with vegetables Beef - A5 Japanese Wagyu Shabu Shabu served with vegetables Nigiri - Various platters including halibut, bluefin tuna, salmon roe Owan - Akada miso soup with shimeji mushrooms Dessert - White peach cobbler with Valencia orange and jelly sauce Each dish was carefully prepared and beautifully plated. The sauces used (e.g. fish stock, vinegar jelly, plum soy sauce) complemented the seafood. The best part was the beef as it was tender, marbled Wagyu beef. My previous omakase experiences have been seafood-based, so having the meat as one of the dishes was a nice change of pace. The quality of the food and service was top notch .

Had dinner here one evening after being famished and tried to book a reservation on Tock but found they were fully booked. Thought I would take a chance and show up and sit at the bar. To my surprise there was only a single table there and the restaurant was empty. It was late though 8pm at night so maybe it was busy earlier. I was greeted with a police smile and soft voice by the host Soco. (I think was her name) The restaurant is spacious, clean, and has beautiful decor and natural wood on the walls and ceilings. The server did an excellent job with her recommendations and I ordered everything she suggested. The service from our first interaction with the hostess throughout our meal there was attentive, warm and friendly. The Zensai special was my favorite part of the meal, not only was it beautifully prepared, it tasted delectable. The quality of the seafood and veggies were so fresh. The sushi chef had a big smile ear to ear and could tell he enjoyed his job and making the customers happy. For sure will be back but next time with a large group as there are so many items I want to try. A happy camper!
Premium Omakase should be a one of a kind experience.
.. An expression of the chef's aesthetic, taste, creativity and style. IMO Komatsuya fails to impress in most of these categories. The decor and atmosphere is in two words: UNFINISHED and UNINSPIRED. It's like they didn't even try. As for the food, the courses were quite tasty, but also quite ordinary, with nothing surprising or challenging. The service was disappointing. I sat at the bar with my father and while the wait staff was very gracious, the chef and his sous chef stood emotionless and barely acknowledged us. The whole experience felt like we were holding them prisoner... Like they would rather be somewhere else. It made for an awkward evening for something that was supposed to be a special occasion. And with so many better options in San Diego... I will not be returning.
Such good food! The only place where I've actually enjoyed
Such good food! The only place where I've actually enjoyed squid nigiri and each dish was flavorful and delicious. Our server was very attentive and the chefs were very kind! I'll definitely be coming back!

Agreed. Ultimately not addressing this month after month is clearly resulting in a drop in certain venue’s rankings & sales.

Need to cancel a bid, not getting a response… how do I do it? |
Click on "Take off the Market Option" in your portfolio
Working on your bid? |
Your bid has been “matched” with a reservation. From the time a reservation has been located, the seller of the reservation must connect with moderator to give transfer information for reservation. If the seller;however, does NOT respond to reservation transfer, then your bid is reprocessed and returns to the first step, which is connecting your request to a reservation.
Process after bid is accepted. |
Hey @EvocativeFold67, welcome to appointmenttrader! Once the reservation is in your portfolio, you definitely own the timeslot, the review team would not have approved the trade if the reservation wasn't confirmed - so you are going :-) Judging from your post you bid today and are going tomorrow - don't worry as long as you initiated the name transfer, you are good - the transfer service has to work with the opening hours of the reservation team of the respective venue. You will likely see the transfer confirmation a couple hours before your reservation time.
Where do the Reservations on AppointmentTrader come from? |
Mostly from people who don't need their reservations or appointments any longer. AT has no relationship with places listed and acts as a platform connecting buyers and sellers making sure that listed reservations are real and that privacy is not compromised when transacting.
What happens if my bid expires unanswered? |
Hey @FluffyStar64, thanks for the question! When you place your bid the amount gets transferred in a deposit account, the second you either cancel your bid or a few minutes after the bid expires the funds are moved back into your main account from where you can refund it to your payment method or use for other transactions.

Banned from Resy for selling reservations- Do we have a rat on our hands???
I am new to this app and started off by selling a polo bar reservation and then quickly sold one more reservation. Not long after I received emails from Resy saying all my reservations are cancelled and I am being banned from Resy for life. How could this have possibly happened without a rat telling Resy that I sold the reservation. I need some advice on this situation and let’s catch the rat!
Give the best answerBid and Buy Instantly
I have a big ongoing and it also shows someone is working on my bid. Today I see there is a " Buy Instantly " option at my portfolio showing same price I've bid for a reservation. I'm a bit confused, since my money has already been deducted from my credit card for the bid, do I need to pay one more time for the Buy Instantly? If I choose Buy Instantly, can I cancel my bid ( while someone is working on it )? Thanks!

You can only deposit $50 at a time until you earn the “Sales and Low Refund Medal” I believe. Im new to this as well but the ability to deposit more money at once and increase your amount of listings comes with that medal.

Anyone know how increase payout transfer to bank as I can only send $50 a day and they charge $5 for every transaction. There must be a way. I’ve contacted support two days ago and not a reply.

I have some reservations coming up tomorrow that have gotten lots of views but haven’t sold yet. I haven’t made a sale yet since I just joined this week. I keep lowering the price, but am worried they won’t sell. How long did it take you to sell your first reservations? And did you have success being reimbursed by AT for no-show or cancellation fees? Just looking for a little reassurance. Thanks!
