Kyoto culinary culture + traditional gardening
It’s memorable experience and an enjoyable lunch there, value for money. Good food surrounded by a Japanese Garden, birds singing and monk reciting messages from Buddha.

Our family had an absolutely awesome time here. Great traditional Japanese fine dining experience and would love to go more often, if the wallet let me. haha
Great staff and very professional.
Exquisite kaiseki cuisine and amazing setting
Dining on an exquisite range of Kaiseki dishes in a spacious (not sure how many mats) and historic room and looking out across a thousand year-old Kyoto garden was an unforgettable experience. The eight courses were a feast for the eyes as well as the stomach! One wished to linger over each dish, appreciating them aesthetically before tasting. I cannot recall details of individual dishes - but the presentation of some courses in decorative multi-layered wooden boxes, each layer containing a range of dishes as it was taken apart, heightened one's anticipation - miso I remember was smooth and delicious; the vegetables, fish, rice - everything we ate - and the order in which it was served could not be faulted. Each dish was explained by a staff member and translated by our friend.
The peonies arranged in the tokonoma were complemented by the ceramics and lacquer on which our food was served. A magnificent and historic black lacquer screen inlaid with characters in mother-of-pearl, caught my eye as we entered, divided from the area in which we dined by semi-transparent, painted gauze hanging, for the summer decoration of the room. (I think originally a tea room in a house nearly 400 years old, which had belonged to the head priest of Nishi Hongan-ji temple.) The interior was complemented by the garden, that contained many very important rocks over which we glimpsed Yasuka Shrine. We were doubly fortunate and privileged in that we were in the most important room in the restaurant
From the moment we were welcomed at the entrance on the street, the service was impeccable. After our lunch, we met Junko, who is now managing the restaurant, and I think the sixth generation of the family to do so.
Only Japanese was spoken during lunch as we were guests of a Japanese friend, but later, when we went to Kodai-ji, the young Japanese woman who escorted us from the restaurant to the temple spoke fluent English.
I have never had such a remarkable experience in a Japanese restaurant - and this was our tenth visit to Kyoto. There is a website and it is essential to make a reservation.
Trip highlight
Absolutely wonderful experience. The proprietor Junko was such a perfect hostess. The food was excellent. The atmosphere and scenery excellent. We also had Geisha Maiko dinner arranged through the facility and it was a trip highlight.
