Our dinner at Paradou is one of the meals that I will
Our dinner at Paradou is one of the meals that I will retain in my memory for a long time. The restaurant is very homey; we determined that the husband is the chef, the wife is the hostess, and various siblings/cousins are handling service. The menu is a 59 Euro fixed price, which seems steep, but includes everything, even wine. (Although perhaps not bar drinks.) There were a couple of decisions to make, but mostly it was decided for me, which is fine by me when everything is delicious. I started with escargot, followed by a main course of roast chicken and homemade pasta. Then came the cheese course to end all cheese courses (at least a dozen different cheeses on the platter: eat all you can), and a little something sweet for dessert. Everything excellent. My wife is vegetarian, and they were happy to accommodate her with a few little items of her own. I think she was also pretty happy with the cheese platter.

We have been coming to our bistro for twenty+ years, as we stay nearby at the wonderfull Chateau des Alpilles. Vincent and his brother, Pierre, took over from Jean Lois and his wife and have carried on the tradition of solid regional cuisine from a menu set in advance each week. When you call ahead in advance for a reservation, a must, ask what they are serving on the day you wish to visit. Friday is always Aioli, served with fish and vegetables. Very traditional Aoli of the region, must love garlic. Saturday is usually poulette de Bresse. Come hungry as the set menu includes an appetizer (entree), main, cheese tray and dessert. I highly recommend the Babba a Rhum. They serve it with a bottle of Jamesson wisky to pour on top. The set menu of the day includes wine, poured freely. Take your time and pace yourself as the attentive servers will never rush you.If you come before 12:30 you will likely start your meal alone but the place fills up by 13.30hr. I guarantee this will be a highlight of your stay.

leave room for cheese because they will abandon a cheese tray at your table and come back to pick up the left overs. we were pretty full but still gave it a pretty good fight.this place feels like eating at your grandma's if grandma were french and a pretty damn good cook. it is prix fixe so don't come asking for a menu, same as you would at mamie, but i promise you mamie will bring good food and good wine.

Lovely setting. Off the road near the mountains. Rustic. Very casual. So much food, so much cheese, so much wine! A true classic.

Amazing! French bistro with incredible food and amazing atmosphere. Leave room for the cheese plate and desert at the end.

We had a really fun lunch here in our first afternoon in Provence. It is not cheap, and it is somewhat risky, as the menu for the day is pre-set, but the food is very good, and the portions are truly enormous -- almost to the point where you wish they'd give you less. The day we were there, the courses were:- Salad- Vegetables and cod- Snails- Cheese- Choice of dessertEach course probably could have been a meal on its own, and on top of all that, we were gorging on their incredible bread throughout the meal. The salad was very good, with the one downside being that it had anchovies, which we're not fans of. We both thought the veggies and fish were fairly pedestrian -- good, but not something I'd be really excited to get again. The snails, on the other hand, were surprisingly great. Neither of us eat snails, but we decided to be brave, and were rewarded for it. They were outstanding, as was the restaurant's home made mustard that we dipped them in.The cheese, though, is what we'll really remember though. For this course, they brought out a giant tray of cheeses, and you take as much of each as you want. By this point in the meal, we were both incredibly stuffed, but it didn't matter -- we took a ton of cheese, and it was tremendous. We both felt pretty gross afterwards, but it was worth it.That wasn't even the end, though -- after a little cool down period, we got dessert. My wife got chocolate ice cream, and I got the chocolate mousse, which was outstanding. Altogether, this is an experience I would definitely recommend, as we really enjoyed it, but it's not without its warts. My biggest pieces of advice would be to be prepared to eat a LOT, and check the menu in advance.

This review is based on countless visits since the early 90s, perhaps even earlier. If you didn't have a French grandmother who cooked all day, using only traditional recipes and the finest ingredients, Le Bistrot du Paradou is the next best thing.Just today, for example, the new team, replacing the gracefully retired Jean-Louis and Mireille Pons, presented perfectly flavored, juicy rabbit, preceded by the classic aubergine/tomate concasse starter and followed by the famous cheese course and very fine desserts. In the last month we've had the volaille de Bresse, agneau de Ventoux, tête de veau and aïoli. All were delicious and made me long for my (non-existent) French grandmother.

It's not far out of the way if you're around St-Remy-de-Provence or Les Baux. In fact, lunch at the Bistrot followed by stunning views at the Chateau Les Baux made for a pretty perfect day for us.We stopped by for a dinner and a lunch without reservations. I'd say that being able to do this is probably not the norm, and we only got away with it because it was freezing cold and in the middle of low season. Still, for the lunch, I believe only a few tables got in without reservations, and by the time we left, the place was completely packed. Definitely a noticable number of foreigners (especially at earlier mealtimes), but it still seemed like most of the patronage was local people who knew each other and the restaurant staff.Current opening times are lunch Tuesdays to Fridays and dinner Friday and Saturday. I'm not sure if they offer more times during the summer. Lunch was about 42 euros and dinner was 49, including appetizer, main course, cheese plate, dessert, wine, and coffee. It's a pretty set menu - you may or may not get a choice of appetizer, and you get a choice of dessert. They write the main course for the week on a board inside so you can figure out when to come back. :)Service is excellent, even for non French speakers. When things aren't too busy, the waiters are happy to chat with you, and they go out of their way to make you happy. My boyfriend was trying pastis for the first time, and the bartender gave him a second one for free because "you can never drink just one." I couldn't decide between two tartes for dessert... they cut me a small slice of all three. Really, this is a great experience that you do not want to miss. And the food... SO good. We had roasted chicken for dinner, and it was perfectly seasoned, accompanied by the richest, tastiest scalloped potatoes. But the ultimate highlight was the cassoulet lunch. Best I've ever had, and there was a television crew in there filming their lunch, so I guess other people must think so, too. This place has gotten a lot of hype - write ups in food magazine, blog attention, Chowhound forum buzz, even a callout in Peter Mayle's A Year in Provence back in 1989. In 2010, it still lives up to its reputation, in service, atmosphere, and food. This was the only restaurant during my France trip that I went to more than once.
Be the first to ReplyLe Bistrot is one of the really classic country places in
Le Bistrot is one of the really classic country places in the Alpilles. I'd heard a lot about it and was looking forward to dinner. The building is pretty great, a place you will enjoy driving up to--old and very atmospheric. There was a little confusion from the waiters exactly when it was built--the first waiter said the 1600s, then the second waiter said he was crazy it was early 1800s and used as a 'pony express' station--but in any case it was old. Your choices are limited--you can pick one of two appetizers (in our case, a foie gras ravioli or some red mullet), and they prepare one main course a night (rack of lamb for us). Then you get a cheese selection and dessert choices. You can call ahead and find out what they are cooking that night. I'm not going to go into the dishes because what you get will be different, but the cooking is very good. I tend to like restaurants that will have this kind of fixed menu, the chef can lean into it a little bit when there is only one dish to prepare.Waiters were great and English-friendly.Good country French experience!
