Le Calandrе Sarmeola Reviews from The Last Year
Always at the top
The restaurant has had 3 Michelin stars for 20 years now and the quality shows. I chose the customizable menu which allows you to range between the proposals of the three different tasting menus present in order to taste the iconic dishes of chef Massimiliano Alajmo, who came to greet the guests a couple of times during lunch. Cozy restaurant with just over 20 seats, service at the highest levels, professional but at the same time very familiar, and prices in line with the quality of a 3-star restaurant.
Pleasant experience with one flaw
For a different evening than usual, with my wife and a couple of friends we organized a multi-starred dinner and, to be honest, we really had a lot of fun. Being our first time at Le Calandre, we opted for one of the tasting menus. The proposed menu was very satisfactory, both in terms of the quality of the ingredients and the combinations and taste of the dishes offered. Cuttlefish and risotto really delicious. I agree with some reviewers about the poor lighting in the room. But I really have to make a note: it is not allowed, and in the end it is annoying that it happens in a place with three stars, that the wine proposed in the list (among other things two different types of Paul Louis Martin champagne, not one) does not is then present in the cellar and an alternative is proposed. It doesn't cost much to keep the list updated since it is delivered via tablet and not on printed paper.
What a disappointment...!!!
Let me start by saying that I have tried countless starred restaurants both in Italy and abroad and they have usually always been satisfying experiences. Some dishes are more exciting, some dishes less so, but overall dinners or lunches are always engaging and unforgettable. Unfortunately this absolutely did not happen to the Alaimo brothers' Calandre. ● Service: The dishes were not brought at the same time as has always happened in other starred restaurants. Crumbs spilled on everyone and the waiter careless about what happened. Small bowl dedicated to the olive oil being tasted and not changed by one of the guests as many crumbs had been accidentally spilled into it. The other three participants at the dinner had more oil poured since they had not had the same problem. None of the staff bothered to ask for an opinion on the evening at the end of the dinner. ● Dishes: wanting to be good, there are some errors in the service even if for €280 of just a tasting menu they shouldn't happen, but the real disappointment came from the kitchen department. Dishes of a disconcerting banality. The famous cappuccino is nothing more than a mashed potato, delicious and very soft, of course, with cuttlefish in euros on the bottom. The dish with the pig was a 5cmx5cm cube of meat with a mini portion of chard and mustard mousse alongside the meat. Ok, everything is soft and tasty, but really super banal. Another example of a super banal dish, filo pastry cannoli with ricotta and basil, a spoonful of burrata stracciatella and a mini pot of tomato sauce. Or the cold cooked initial salad which would be a half head of Brazilian type macerated with a particular dressing, nothing more was perceived. I could also cite the revisited carbonara as an example of banality or the embarrassing almond mozzarella in the desserts or the wines served not at an adequate temperature, but I would say that it is more than enough to make it clear where my whole idea comes from.
Global excellence
We know many starred restaurants in Italy and around the world. At Le Calandre we found absolute excellence in everything. From the courses, each of them is unforgettable and well calibrated. Up to the service, attentive and very empathetic. We celebrated our son's thirtieth birthday in a gastronomic context of the highest level. The three stars, if compared for example to the much vaunted ones of Villa Crespi, here should be six!
Disappointing experience for a 3 star I expected much more anonymous dishes service not up to par
Disappointing experience service not up to par good food but for a 3 star I expected much more wine not always at the right temperature I ate in other restaurants with 1 or 2 stars much better. I recommend going straight.
Ecstatic
With a dear friend of mine I had dinner in this extraordinary restaurant, an icon of global catering, 3 Michelin stars for over 20 years, and for many years present in the group of the 50 best restaurants in the world. In this restaurant Massimiliano Alajmo's cuisine is pure poetry, the path I tried is the perfect synthesis between quality, technique, competence, art and passion of the chef. Throughout the extraordinary journey, the Risotto Passi D'Oro deserves a mention, a sublime, elegant and delicate dish dedicated to the work of Roberto Barni exhibited at the Uffizi in Florence, and the Fragilita' Gioco al Cioccolato 2024 which concluded with its twelve sweets dinner in a memorable way to say the least. Thank you Le Calandre and thank you Massimiliano, I will carry this unforgettable evening in my heart. For me you are the best that exists in global catering, with deep respect and affection Brasolin Luca
Even excellence can be improved
As in all starred restaurants, the flavors and textures are unique, not replicable. The service is not three Michelin stars (champagne brought not at an unforgivable temperature for a three star) but I don't feel like penalizing them for the young age of the staff. Very high prices
A perfect evening
Adding something new to what has already been written and read in previous reviews is not easy when talking about Chef Massimiliano Alajmo's three-star restaurant for over 20 years. I can only say that the birthday dinner spent at Le Calendre was an unprecedented taste and sensorial experience. The room is managed effectively and very professionally by staff who are always ready to intervene at your every request. The attention paid by the kitchen team to organizing the "starred" dinner even for a gluten intolerant guest is surprising. The wine list is decidedly well organized and the choice is made easier based on your tastes. Chef Massimiliano Alajmo appears in the room a couple of times to make sure everything is to your liking. What can I say, congratulations to everyone.
Le Calndre???.....Go straight!!!
Kitchen: 4 Anonymous and characterless dishes. Out of nine courses, none left me with memories. Cellar: 5 Good choice but the temperature served is not always the best Service: 2 Unprofessional staff. Several times I had to call the waiter to replenish the glass. You notice a coming and going of staff going around the tables, like a pizzeria, never the same person, therefore it is difficult to build loyalty with "your" trusted waiter. Local: 2 Very sad and gloomy interior. No tables or chairs outside for those wishing to take a break to enjoy a relaxing glass. Very small bathrooms, only one person can fit in. Imagine I had to queue outside there were two people waiting. Account: 2 The price is crazy, an offense against common sense and without logic.
Le Calandre: A Michelin Misadventure
I've traveled the world, dining at numerous Michelin-starred restaurants from Hong Kong to Boston, and through Dubai (where I recommend Avatara), Rome, London, and beyond. Should you find yourself near Rubano considering a visit to Le Calandre, I urge you to speed past without stopping. The building is an uninspired example of brutalist architecture, lacking any hint of romance or significance. The room service proved disappointingly mediocre, neither warm nor adept at handling unexpected requests. When we asked for an aperitif to be served outdoors with some welcome finger food, they were unprepared and left us wanting. The food, for which we selected the classic option, was nothing more than average. Comparable dishes are easily found in any London restaurant or in numerous other Italian establishments, Michelin-starred or not. In sum, my experience at Le Calandre was a profound disappointment. I have no intention of returning. The only redeeming feature was the wine list, but even that does not justify the journey.

Ask a Question |
Whose name will my reservation be under when I arrive at the venue? |
It can be under your name or a name you choose! Some reservation offers already include the AppointmentTrader Transfer Service which will transfer the reservation in to your name. If its not included you can add it on after buying the reservation for a small fee. One thing on that though: As many reservations become available at last minute, taking a reservation in someone else name is quick and great for privacy. Most reservations on AT are listed with a virtual phone number, so all you need to do is present the phone number at the hostess stand and you are good to go!
