We are regular visitors to this beautiful spa town, and during our last visit, decided to make a trip to Décoret, given its excellent reputation in the town. Sadly it was a huge disappointment. There are so many examples of why, but to pick just a few: -service. This was painfully slow to non existent. We have been lucky to visit a couple of other Michelin star establishments and the service has always been faultless. Not here sadly. We constantly had to get the attention of someone. In the end, my husband was so fed up of waiting for someone to notice that our wine glasses were empty (they’d tucked our wine and water bottles out of reach) that he stood up and went and fetched it himself, accompanied by sympathetic murmuring from nearby diners who were experiencing the same problems. The actual duration of the poor meal went on for hours due to this slow service. -food. On arrival, I noticed that many other diners had what appeared to be bowls of leaves. Indeed when it was our turn for a bowl of leaves, I expected to be told it was some culinary magic trick and the contents were edible. How wrong I was! The waitress told us it was “trompe l”œil” but then went on to explain that the orange leaves were edible, but the others were… actual leaves!! I then wasted ten minutes of my life trying to pick out the orange ones from the actual foliage (gathered in the park presumably!) and then gave up. The main course was fairly inedible - texture of the fish spongy. We came away hungry - meringues with mustard anyone?!? and had drinks and snacks back at our hotel whilst we nursed our disappointment and our credit card bills. -lack of regional produce. The waitress was keen to tell us that we were going to be taken on a journey of discovery of the chef’s childhood in the region. However the fish of the day was - Arctic char!! That fish seemed a strange choice when the Allier river, 5 minutes walk away, is teeming with fish! -lack of “whistles and bells”. I associate Michelin with lovely touches such as amuse bouches, hand made chocolates etc, but there really was nothing like that. In summary, I thought long and hard before I wrote this review as it’s not in anyone’s interests to be negative about someone’s business that they work hard in. However, I feel strongly that Décoret needs to take a look at the experience that he is offering for such a vast price, and prospective diners, in the meantime, should think about spending their hard earned pennies in one of the many other fantastic, reasonably priced restaurants showcasing the best of French cuisine in the nearby streets. I wish someone had to told us to do the same!! Sorry team Décoret, I really did want to like it - but “une grosse déception”.
