Vanderbilt Ave is a fun part of hipster Brooklyn I haven't had many opportunities to visit. I am not gonna pretend that the initial choice for a good restaurant on that block wasn't Olmsted across the street. But upon learning that Maison Yaki was the sister restaurant serving Fusion style Yakitori, I was mighty intrigued. I was delighted by the relaxed vibe and the nice touch with exposed brick walls, open kitchen and bar seating around the kitchen. For the rest of us, the patio seating was something I wish I didn't miss out on. The menu was simple excellence. Appetizers and skewers, no frills. Mushrooms, scallops, and the cauliflower okonomyaki were true highlights. The beef tongue was disappointing due to the excessive batter coating on top of two quarter slices of bread it was sandwiched between. The texture and flavor was a bit of a miss as a result. Food aside, the staff was delightful and attentive (sometimes to the point where we had moments feeling pressured to leave and not order more food). Few gripes aside, it was still very solid experience and my friends enjoyed themselves. Look forward to returning and trying the rest of the menu.
