Quality Chinese in Fairfax
This restaurant has many authentic Chinese dishes as well as the fare you would expect to see at an American Chinese restaurant. The service is always fast and efficient and everything is always well executed. Recommend the duck egg roll appetizer.
Be the first to ReplyBEST CHINESE ever!!
Second time eating here and itโs the best Chinese food Iโve EVER had. The first time was with 5 people and we shared numerous dishes and all were delicious. Today, I took a friend and he and I split Lychee Pepper Chicken (saw a plate go by and had to ask what it was!!) and combination fried rice. Friend also got Sweet Sour soup and said โbest ever.โ I ordered a fried rice to go and my wife and daughter agreedโbest ever. Itโs a bit pricey at $18 but it must be two pounds of food!!! They both ate two bowls and thereโs still a ton left for later! I canโt wait to return!!
Be the first to ReplyDifferent Dim Sum experience
Spacious restaurant in Fairfax that features an extensive dim sum menu. I would describe it as a slight upgrade to the typical dim sum fare in terms of presentation but at a slightly higher price point. There are no dim sum carts here and there is a big team of waiters who bring the food out to the tables. Some of the dim sum orders come with fresh and tasty bok choy on the side. Soup pork dumplings ($8) and pork & shrimp shumai ($7) were good. The turnip cake with XO paste was ok. Beef chow fun ($16) is tasty but a bit pricy. Pork and century egg porridge was quite tasty. The Yangzhou meatball stew ($18) can be skipped as it was essentially 3 giant meatballs but bunch of filing and crunchy stuff inside each one that didnโt quite accentuate the enjoyment factor. We didnโt order the scallion bubble pancake but saw others enjoy this unique appetizer. If you like the more traditional dim sum places with the carts, at a lower price point. then this may not be your place.
Be the first to ReplyDecent food but overpriced
Decent food, good service and modern atmosphere, but a bit overpriced for Chinese food. We ordered four items and my favorite was the hot and sour soup with duck. Was it worth $8? No. We came here to check out all the hype, but I donโt see us dining here often.

For those who donโt know Peter Chang is an icon. An illusive chef that foodies hunted for years until he settled down in this area and now has a few restaurants. We drove well out of our way on a road trip to try this restaurant of his for the first time (weโve been to Richmond and stop gap ones) and weโre very glad we did. Not everything was outstanding but youโll be rewarded the more adventurous your ordering is. The soups and dumplings were just good, but the cauliflower is a must order as is the mouth numbing beef jerky. Please give it a try if you love new flavors and adventurous eating.
Be the first to ReplyMixed qualify of dishes
Up front, this review is not about typical meal service but about a private dining event for a large group. My cousins arranged for their parents' 50th wedding anniversary party here, which included a very large group ranging in ages from seniors to small grandkids. At first I thought the room was a good size but it filled up and got noisy as people arrived. The menu was pre-arranged and I'd say the food was hit or miss. Some of it was very good and some of it was just so-so. Some of our party ordered alcoholic drinks and some of us just ordered tea. Portions were plentiful and there was enough to box up and take home for whoever wanted it. We did get the feeling at the end of the evening that they wanted us to finish up and leave, even though there were still plenty of patrons in the main dining room. Perhaps their made-to-order food is better than their banquet food.
Be the first to ReplyGroup Lunch
My group was seated in a pleasantly decorated room with windows and the wait staff accommodated our request for 10 separate checks graciously. There were a couple of mix-ups on checks and these were corrected graciously as well. Food here is interesting and the menu takes you beyond the standard Chinese fare, but for the less adventurous there are also some standbys (Mongolian chicken or beef, for example). The style of decor is modern and light with interesting textures created by rope lined walls and woven light covers. I had the soup dumpling from the Dim Sum menu and was surprised that it was served in a basket (not a bowl). There was broth inside each dumpling (not much) but it sank into the bottom of the basket. A bowl would have been better for service. That said, the dumplings were very good and plentiful. I shared some of mine with a friend. We decided to also share the Mongolian beef (count me among the less adventurous, ha ha) and there was more than enough for two with enough to split to take home. This dish and others are on the Family Style part of the menu and sharing is encouraged by the big glass lazy Susan in the center of the table. The food was good and tasty and I'm planning a return trip to try some of the other dishes. It would be fun to choose three or four items from the dim sum menu to share with a friend.
Be the first to ReplyDecent Szechuan Food
I came here with a group of friends for lunch one day and we ordered MANY items to all try togetherโฆ First, the service, it was decent. Since we were ordering many items at different times we had to flag down a server a few times to place an order, but overall, the food came out quickly, was hot, fresh and the servers were friendly. The venue is nice, not your typical Chinese restaurant. Itโs nicely decorated, restroom was clean and they have nice looking party or group rooms too. They get moderately busy for weekday lunches, but there are plenty of folks working here to help you. Regarding the foodโฆ We tried many items, I can day that each were made with fresh ingredients and the cooking/prep/temp was perfectly spot-on. I have had better Szechuan style food, but this ranks in my top 5. The soup dumplings didnโt seem to have any soup at all inside them and the soy ginger sauce that came with them has too high of a ratio of vinegar. The Peking Duck is nicely done, but they say itโs a whole or half, yet it doesnโt have wings with itโฆ Same with the Changโs Duck. The Sizzling Pork Belly wasnโt crispy at all.. the flavor was decent, but this was the most disliked dish by all of us, simply because of the fatty, rubbery texture of the food. The Amish Chicken Dumpling soup was really nicely done! Their chili oil has a decent flavor, but no heat to it. I ordered the stir fried chicken with snow peas and it was more of a Moo Goo Gai Pan type dishโฆ Nothing else to it, just white sauce, but it was decent. The cumin lamb skewers were tasty, but Iโm not sure why they use toothpicks in lieu of โskewersโ and Iโm not sure of the purpose at all. The mongalian Beef was really good, but the ratio of onions to beef was way too disproportionate. The hot & numbing beef jerky was great! Nicely spiced and great texture too! The dried fried cauliflower was nicely done, but didnโt have that โSzechuan kickโ to it, like I get from other placesโฆ it was fried (lightly) and then dusted with slight flavor. Same with the flounder, AKA: Peter Chang Bamboo Fishโฆ Lacking the spicy/ Szechuan flavor I seek in this type of food. Overall, it was nice. I would definitely returnโฆ Just try some different, more exciting dishes. But I have to say that Bobโs Shanghai (Rockville) and Szechuan Taste (Dale City) are much more preferred.
Be the first to ReplyFamily dinner celebrations
We've been at Mama Chang's for at least 4 bday celebrations and more recently our wedding anniversary August 3. Food delectable and service great as always even when they're seemingly understaffed and closing times, still service with a smile and great, excellent fine dining! Thanks to everyone at Mama Chang's!!!
Be the first to ReplyExcellent, Special Chinese Food
Excellent take on Chinese fare. Every dish tried was superb! This location and the other Peter Chang locations are treasures that do not exist in most other places. Prices tend toward the higher end, but not terrible.
Be the first to ReplyMAMAโS HOME?
We made our first trip to Mama Chang when we were in town June of last year (2021). The delicious, original food and preparations really knocked our socks off. We couldnโt wait to go back. Fast forward, July 2022. Weโre back in town and ready for Mama Chang! The first thing we noticed upon entering for lunch was that a year later, the place is looking a little disheveled. The menus are hastily updated with tape or WhiteOut and hand-written notes. The bathrooms donโt appear to have been cleaned since dinner rush the night beforeโฆ OK, weโre still game. Our recollection of the food was so good, we were ready to put up with a little eccentricity. Itโs worth it. We ordered the dry fried cauliflower and Changโs Hot and Numbing Beef Jerky. After our first visit, the cauliflower had been a frequent subject of conversation whenever Chinese food was mentioned. Initial impressions aside, we were hopeful the dishes would have the โpopโ we remembered. Minutes after our order, the dishes arrived. While the original idea of each was still there, the preparation seemed to lack the care and artistry we experienced last year. Both were overly oily and dumped in serving dishes without concern for presentation. Were we disappointed? Not entirely. Our lunch was enjoyable, and we will return when back in town โ if Mama Chang is still there for us. Hopefully, we just hit them during a bad month and the place will be back on point when weโre next in town. Weโre pulling for Mama Chang!
Be the first to ReplyGreat food and great value
Ate there with my wife and two sons. Total bill, food and two beers, was just under $110. For 4 people, that's not that much. Highly recommend the pork dumplings, green beans, and the bamboo fish. Never have had anything less than "good" at Mama Chang.
Be the first to ReplyGreat Chinese restaurant frequented by Chinese.
Great service. Great ambiance and modern decor and bright oposite to the typical dark Chinese restaurants that are more usually to see. Food presentation is great. We ordered Steamed pork dumplings which were perfect. Scallion bubble pancake which look cool and tasted great. However I will say I like it better with some of the other sweeter sauces that we had from the other dishes. Peking duck again great Mongolian beef and delicious. Highly recommended.

Today, we had lunch there. The first impact of the restaurant was pretty nice. Bright, big and full of people! We ordered two dim-sum: [steam spare rib] and [steam chicken feet]. And, Roast duck (1/2) ๏ผๅปฃๅผ็้ดจ๏ผ Chinese BBQ Pig Feet ๏ผ็คๅฐ่น๏ผ Farmer's Stir Fry (่พฒๅฎถไธ็ข้ฆ๏ผ Stir Fried Veggies (ๆธ ็ๆไปค่ฌ่- snow pea tips-$26!) Every dish tasted good but [Chinese BBQ Pig Feet] was not the taste which we are familiar. The dish was not based on soy sauce but used cumin. We thought its skin should be more softer, less chewy and a bit sweet. Service was fine except the server took a wrong order, but soon he corrected it. It is a nice place for family and friends gathering, definitely will go again and introduce to our friends. At the end, we asked the person who was at the front desk: [is Mama Chang here Really Peter Chang's Mam?] He answered: [I don't know what you mean, Every business has it's owner. But they are related...] I don't know exactly what he means ..
Be the first to ReplyVery disappointing
The setting is nice - modern and intentionally on the spare side. Service was good enough. The food was very disappointing. We ordered three family style dishes to share. My husband called each one bland. My opinion was that each was very heavy with oil.
We ate 1/3 and took home the rest. After one try, we couldn't bring ourselves to eat the leftovers.
$80 not well spent.
Be prepared to get stuffed
Great food from an extensive menu, and it's hard to choose what you'll be having because of the abundance of options; I'd recommend getting their fried cauliflower! If you go for dinner, however, it might be a bit packed, so be prepared in advance.
Be the first to ReplyMama knows best
Restos serving some of the best Chinese regional food are often holes in the wall or located in ethnic neighborhoods. Mama Chang is neither; it has clean almost Nordic decor with light wood and bright windows and not a dragon in sight. The authentic food (well, not REALLY, if you have been to China, but orders of magnitude above the average Asian eatery) is delicious, sparkling and fresh, crunchy where it ought to crunch and fire-y where it ought to brun.
Be the first to ReplyMama Changs
We order Vegetable Lomein, Chicken Lomein, Orange Chicken, Chicken Fried Rice and Vegetable Spring Roll.
Everything we ordered seem to have been reheated. The orange chicken was hard and cold even though the coating was piping hot. The rice had cold spots throughout, the Lomein seem to have either been mixed after because it tasted hard and had cold spots as well.
This was a total disappointment as weโve been here a couple times before and it was always amazing. Maybe itโs the pandemic but this meal was not even with our drive from Ashburn. Either make the food fresh or donโt sell it. Itโs never appetizing to eat a meal thatโs insidiously old and previously frozen. Guess this is our last visit.
GANGHOOD FRIED CHICKEN - Szechuan style
We all had "fried chicken" and I sure we all have our "favorites". But this "Ganghood Fried Chicken" is different - cooked to a golden brown - crispy, full of flavors with szechuan spices - Mouth Watering :) Other items on the menu that my wife and I tried and worth mentioning - Cumin Lamb Skewers ( not the typical lamb kabob) - Dry Fried Cauliflower and Hot and Sour Soup. Definitely returning soon to try out the other tempting menu offerings. Bon Appetite
Be the first to ReplyDistinctive and delicious.
Mama Chang, which describes itself as an upscale casual restaurant, features a spacious interior with clean sight-lines and lots of natural light. Itโs a classy yet comfortable, low-key setting, with menu items that are both distinctive and delicious.
Arriving for lunch, we both had the Amish chicken wonton soup, easily the best wonton soup weโve ever enjoyed. Next, we shared two small plates (which were not that small): salt and pepper shrimp โ distinctive and outstanding โ and the lychee black pepper chicken (yummy!).
In my experience, โupscaleโ also translates into higher prices, and so it is with Mama Chang. Two points, to consider, though: Mama Chang is the creation of celebrated chef/restaurateur Peter Chang, and its higher prices are not exorbitant prices.
If youโre looking for a moo goo gai pan palace, Mama Chang is not for you. But if youโd like to sample higher quality fare without breaking the bank, you owe it to yourself to check it out.
Very authentic Chinese food
We did takeout from here. I ordered online and the food was ready when I got there at the time they said it would be ready. Totally no contact with anyone. They had 4 or 5 orders sitting on a table in the lobby area, my phone number was on the bag with my order, so I knew which one was mine. So easy. We got three different dishes which all came with white rice. Everything was cooked to perfection. The portions were very generous and the price was very reasonable. This is excellent Chinese food. We will be back.
Be the first to ReplyStill the best Chinese restaurant in the DMV
All I can say about Mama Chang is - wish there is an outlet in my neighborhood! Then I won't ever have to cook again. As it is it's 10 miles away from where I live so not the easiest place to get to. So it's always a special treat whenever I get a chance to go there. This time we were able to stop there for lunch on the way back from Skyline Drive - our original plan of hiking was dashed by non stop heavy rain. But it's absolutely a worthwhile tradeoff.
The dining room here even pre-pandemic is one of my favorites with bright decor and lots of natural light, and well spaced tables, which are now even more distanced for safety. Food is fabulous as expected - extensive menu with interesting dishes and every dish has a distinct look and taste (which wouldn't be the case in ordinary Chinese restaurants). We had the sweet and sour ribs, Kung pao chicken, shrimp with cucumbers, BBQ pork pastry, shrimp dumplings and the sweet fermented rice cake. Portions were generous considering the very reasonable prices - as a result we seemed to have ordered too much food so had to pack up half for takeaway, a real bonus and almost another meal back home. There are not many restaurants in the DMV area I'd like to visit regularly but this one will always be at the top of my list.
Great with many unique dishes
I like Mama Chang's. Lots of interesting dishes not found elsewhere. Nice airy, high ceilings and good social distancing. It is popular. Even in these sad times for restaurants, there was a long line for takeout and I was glad I made a reservation.
This is not the first time I had visited. This time I had an out of town cousin to entertain so this was perfect. Since I was pretty certain that she couldn't get anything similar in her hometown.
I always get the scallion pancake for $4. It is a signature dish at all of Peter Chang's restaurants. Also got a lamb with chili peppers and a General Tso chicken dish. All good with plenty of chili peppers.
Refined - Spicy - Yummy
First outing to a restaurant since March. Felt very safe. Our temperatures wwere taken and we were seated in far corner... far away from the other 2 diners. Customer service was impeccable. We ordered far too much food for 2 people. Dim sum and small plates are generous portions. "Home style" dishes are large. Will definitely return.
Be the first to ReplyIn my view, this is the best Chinese restaurant in the U.S.
I discovered Mama Chang mid-April, 2020, in the midst of the pandemic. Because of the lockdown, the restaurant was not open for dining on premise.
I ordered three take-out dishes to share with my wife. The food was exquisite, delicious and yet uncompromising in its authenticity and flavor. We both felt as though we were transported back to Hong Kong or Thailand, the region of our origin. (In passing, let me note that most of the reviews on this site are written by people who are not familiar with high-quality Chinese food which is rare in America. Thus, the rating does not reflect its true merits. Between you and me, let's keep it that way so that the place is not too crowded.)
I am looking forward to dining here after the restaurant has re-opened. I'll do a follow-up review to cover the service, drink menu and ambience. Stay safe.
