Mastro's Steakhouse Washington Reviews from The Last Year

I dined here for restaurant week and thoroughly enjoyed my food. I had to request some changes because of dietary restrictions and the staff were able to accommodate them with no problem.
Went to Mastro's to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary
Went to Mastro's to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary and we are so glad we did! The food was excellent and the service fantastic. Our server J was especially helpful explaining menu options and even got the manager to give us a complimentary dessert plate with Happy 25th Anniversary written on it in chocolate. There was great live music in the bar. Nice atmosphere. Even though every table was taken, we didn't have to wait long for our food. Especially recommend adding a lobster tail to your steak if you like surf and turf. I am a Mac and cheese fan and Mastro's cheddar Mac and cheese is to die for. We tried several desserts, all good, and my favorite was the chocolate espresso mousse, which is served warm.
You can't go wrong with a dinner out at Mastro's.
Their signature dishes of the bone-in filet, butter cake and massive sides like garlic mashed potatoes, mac n' cheese and thick wedge salads topped with bacon and blue cheese dressing are all items not to missed. We lived in LA for over a decade, and Mastro's was always our go-to spot to celebrate a special occasion -- whether a landmark birthday, a beloved family member coming to town or a special anniversary. My partner and I just celebrated our 6th wedding anniversary and decided to continue our tradition from LA here in DC. It's a very different vibe than our go-to Mastro's in Beverly Hills. Not to be unexpected at all, but the vibe in DC is much stuffier. But the staff was all very friendly. I do prefer the Beverly Hills location better, with it's open-air balcony seating, lively atmosphere and over-the-top clientele and servers who are basically all wanna-be actors (or in some case those who made it big and didn't get another gig). Yeah, this is not the DC version! This dining room is much darker inside, with curtains drawn all around, and much quieter in the space. It's still an amazing meal, and the dishes were as high quality as the ones we ate in LA. It's a steakhouse so expect a very pricey meal. For us, it's a special splurge place so if you're like us and looking for a spot to celebrate in style for a special occasion, this is a great choice.
I could go on and on about how fabulous my experience was.
From them being willing to change my reservation time twice, and immediately seating us upon our arrival. The ambiance was very giving very much 'Grown & Sexy'! The lights were dimmed, white table cloths, and the servers had on white jackets. There was also live music playing as well. We ordered sautéed shrimps as an appetizer and they were cooked very nicely and the taste was on point!! I ordered a rib eye (bone-in) medium and it was juicy and cooked medium. My husband ordered lamp chops and lobster Mac & cheese and creamed spinach... and OMG, the Chec knew the assignment. The service was top tier and I'll definitely be visiting again!
Dinner and a dining experience done right.
It's often stated that first impressions are lasting impressions; if that adage is correct, Mastros made such a lasting impression on my dinner party last night! Of the eight people in attendance, six had never been to Mastro. By the end of the evening, indeed, every single one was blown away. It first started with the perfect ambiance on the main level with its rich decor and soulful sounds from the live entertainer at the piano in the bar area. The mix of contemporary tunes and timeless classics in a live performance sets this place apart. As we descended the grand staircase, we were led to a large room that easily accommodated our party. Edwin was the star of the evening as a server who was so knowledgeable about the menu that there was no question too hard to answer nor pairing suggestion too tricky to make to ensure our perfectly cooked steaks had the best tasting accouterments. Edwin was so observant that even during casual conversation, he heard me raving about the butter cake and made a mental note that was a surprise, sweet ending to the meal. The drinks were delicious and hand-crafted to provide the perfect balance to enhance the meal. What was most satisfying to see was the teamwork and responsiveness by Lobo, the server assistant who sprung into action when one of the guests accidentally spilled a cocktail; not only did he reset the table for our comfort. He also helped Edwin to ensure the guest had a fresh cocktail and kept our evening moving forward. There are many steak places in Washington, DC, and I have visited many top steak restaurants nationwide. And Mastros continually ranks at the top of the list. The steaks were fantastic. From the bone in 12-ounce fillet to the selection of Wagyu available, it is truly a stake lover's dream. I had both the 12-ounce fillet and Salmon before ordering. I was graced with the presence of Che', who stopped by to ensure that our party was enjoying the evening. I asked for a recommendation for the salmon. As I mentioned, I always have steak, and he suggested the Cajun salmon. The delicate nature blew me away that the fish was prepared and balanced seasoning for the salmon. Not only was my fish and steak cooked to perfection. I added garlic, mashed potatoes, and cream spinach to round out my meal. As I celebrated this evening with friends and family, the sweetest treat arrived: a decadent display of desserts ranging from crème brûlée cheesecake to key lime pie and the famed butter cake. It was indeed a euphoric moment. I wish I had taken more pictures of my food, but I will tell you I was so caught up in the moment that I did not want to miss out on being fully present to enjoy fantastic food, handcrafted drinks, and decadent desserts. If you are looking for a place to have a dining experience, look no further than Mastros.
Worth Every Penny
This experience far exceeds a 5 . A perfect 10. Special birthday treat for my daughter. Started with drinks both amazing, toasted almond and strawberry lemon drop martini that comes out with dry ice… so cool! Our waiter Michael I can’t say enough good things about. Every recommendation he gave was point on. Appetizer of two tiered chilled seafood tower, again comes out on dry ice. First tier lobster, second tier shrimp cocktail. Main course 18oz bone in fillet with mashed potatoes, Chilean Sea Bass with scalloped potatoes— both meals a perfect 10. Had to save room for a delicious…dessert crème brûlée. Michael our waiter brings out a slice of cheesecake with berries , a candle and Happy Birthday written in chocolate around the plate.Such a special touch. This is fine dining at its best definitely a place to splurge. Well worth the money
If I could give Mastro's zero stars, I would.
We should have left when we walked in and it smelled like a septic backup. That's on us. But it was my husband's 50th and he wanted a good steak, and he wanted to give it a shot. It was gorgeous outside but you wouldn't know it. Heavy curtains pulled, minimal lighting. I had to use my phone flashlight to read the menu and I'm 46. The waitress didn't seem pleasant/happy/nice, but we all have bad days-I get it. Bread service--FYI, they charge you for that (note you aren't charged at Ocean Prime, Grill 23...). My guy ordered sirloin, and it was good. Huge order of fries, and broccolini was good but too heavy on pepper for my kid. I ordered chopped salad (not to be confused with the chopped iceberg wedge). I asked for Caesar dressing on the side---"no, it comes with creamy Italian." Fine, on the side please. What I got was the iceberg chopped, as indicated by all the blue cheese crumbles, and the blue cheese dressing. Nope--I don't eat blue cheese. This was delivered by a food runner. She came to check on us quite a bit later and I said no thank you to the salad---did I want the other salad? No thanks, I'll eat my potato. My husband is just about finished. Got the bill--salad was taken off because "didn't like"--printed on the bill! It was the wrong f-ing salad!!! Pretentious, smelly place. Will never go to a Mastro's again.
The food was good, but the service was horrendous.
At first I thought maybe it was just one person (hostess) having a bad night, but the overall demeanor of the hostess, server, etc was very cold and mean. They give off a demeanor that they're barely just tolerating you. We did not feel welcome and did not enjoy our experience at all. The manager was the only person who was accommodating and friendly. The food was good but not good enough to go back.
Took my girlfriend here for a date night.
Great spot, live singer, friendly and knowledgeable service. Even met a few great people at the bar. It is a high ticket restaurant. The food is great and what I expected.
Best steak I've ever had - my waiter's recommendation of
Best steak I've ever had - my waiter's recommendation of the bone in was great! The sides are monstrous so make sure you get one for every two people at least. Live music was great but she was tucked away in a corner, let her be center stage it was great to hear!
I am beyond upset with a place I recommended to everyone.
I entered the place a few minutes past my reservation and instead of greeting me I was told immediately in the rudest way that I am late and where is the rest of the party - we were a party if 6 and 2 of us walked in first. I am appalled that they ruined the surprise for the birthday boy who was with me when I called multiple times earlier telling them it is a surprise and set everything up. After 2 more members of our party arrived momentarily I asked to be seated since we were ready to order for everyone, and only 2 guests were missing (parking at the time) out of the party of 6. the man at the host desk was rude and said yeah it's our policy we can't seat you - rudely and continued to remind me we are late and that we should not be allowed to be seated anymore and he's doing us a favor. He asked if the other members who entered were part of our party and we said yes but he said he cannot seat us until all our party arrived although they were parking and we knew their orders and made it clear. After he repeated this - there was a tone in his voice that made me uncomfortable upset and the birthday boy upset we cancelled our reservation since my friends became upset with how we were being stared at and made uncomfortable. We ended up cancelling it all together after valeting our cards. We walked out upset and hungry and will not be returning. I am sad to say we will not be returning to my favorite spot and the experience has made us all super upset. We weren't welcome and Mastros being a high end restaurant should really reevaluate its customer service due to the lack of respect and customer service shown.
Underwhelmed and Disappointed
We gathered here to celebrate a 50th birthday. The staff was super pleasant and friendly. We had a great time here, however, because it was so pricey we had high expectations and we were underwhelmed and disappointed. I love a Caesar Salad and I expected that salad to knock my socks off. Not only did my sock not come off, it was the worst brown lettuce salad that l've ever had. It was chopped No dish had a presentation or looked appetizing. After adding a little salt the mashed potatoes were delicious. The Chilean Sea Bass was fresh and very good though underseasoned! The side dishes were large enough to share. The twin lobsters were cooked to perfection and very good. My son had a large steak I don't remember which cut but it was $74 no presentation just a big piece of meat on a plate, which he said was delicious. Oh, one last thing you will pay for the water and the bread. The water was so good though. All and all we had a great time, but the food wasn't worth a return visit. I like for my food to be delicious and plated with a wow factor.
Not Great
Reserved a table here based on the positive online reviews and proximity to home. Unfortunately, we did not have a great experience. We are seasoned business travelers who's been to hundreds of fine steakhouses across the country, and this place simply fell flat. Starting from the welcome reception where we were bum rushed by the establishment "body guard" making his priority clear to "please remove your hats" the second we walked through their door with barely a second to shake off the cold (it was 22 degrees outside), to the mediocre steak quality, the cold sides, the undercooked shrimp, the overcooked rubbery lobster, and the pretentious vibe just added up to a ridiculous experience from start to finish. We chose from their Restaurant Week menu and added around a $60 bottle of wine, and ended up spending around $250/person, which seemed pretty expensive, considering. Can't say I'll ever go back nor recommend, as we have too many far better options around this area where service and quality matter more than winter hats.
Great food, but the awful service ruined it
I pass this place all the time and always wanted to go. But the great food couldn't make up for the poor service. The place was half empty but they refused to seat two of the people from our party that arrived 10 mins. early. "We only seat complete parties." It wasn't like there were people waiting for tables. Once there we asked for a quiet table and pointed to an empty section. They said the section was closed. Really? Customer satisfaction isn't one of their priorities. Once seated the cutlery was placed wrong. Then the waiter handed the menus to the men first. There was a party close to us, every time the waiter served them he bumped the back of my wife's chair. (wouldn't be a problem if you seated us where we requested.) The complete cluelessness of the staff and the poorly trained waiter made this a place that I won't see again.
Great option for group meal in DC
Wonderful group dinner experience from the welcome cocktail through the reception appetizers, the shared sides, entrees, and dessert (recommend either chocolate sin cake or the butter cake). Hosting large groups can be challenging, so the multiple entree choices were appreciated on the prix fixe menu. Great location for those staying at the Willard in DC.
Bad piece of meat
Everything was great, except the specialty…. The steak. Up until receiving my 12 ounce, $68 bone in filet, all was well… the service, music, cocktails, salad, and service. But my meat was a strange looking and tasting piece of something. When I told my waitress I was muscling it down she really Didn’t say much. She ended up comping isa desert, but it was too little and too late. Very disappointed in the dinner and how they handled it.😩
Excellent!
Excellent delicious meal and excellent service. LK, our waiter, provided a wonderful dinning experience! Can’t wait to come again.

Great Service - amazing dinner!!
Read about the site in NYT and bought a reservation at Mother Wolf in LA 2 days later. Worked great and the food was amazing!!!
Worked perfectly!
Got the reservation (that I couldn't get anywhere else) and was able to entertain a group of friends at the infamous Bern's Steakhouse.
Got into Nobu Malibu
Wonderful! My parents are visiting and we have wanted to go to Nobu Malibu for years. I tried getting a reservation myself but it was next to impossible. So glad I was able to buy a reservation on appointment trader for a decent price!
Very easy
Was very hesitant going into this experience but am glad to say that it worked out very well ! will definitely use appointment trader in the future
Fabulous Lunch
I was veeeeeerry skeptical that this would work, particularly at a restaurant as hard to get into as Nobu Malibu, and it was perfect! We had lunch outside on the patio and it was fabulous!
Great reviewer team
Just wanted to take a second to shout out the reviewer team. Even though they probably review hundreds of listings and bids a day, they still take the time to leave great comments and respond relatively quickly. Thanks!
Incredible
I got a reservation to Don Angie, which I've been trying to book for weeks! I am very happy with this service.
Best platform out there!

Last minute reservation for Delilah Las Vegas
Got a last minute reservation, dinner for 2 at Delilah Las Vegas: super impressed! The process was simple, transaction seamless. We had an amazing time! Couldn’t be happier! 😍
It works!
Ok at this point I've attended a reservation purchased on AT by a friend and sold a reservation personally. Both worked pretty smoothly, nothing sketchy about it. A few areas for improvement including a way to more directly communicate between buyers and sellers, but the app always seems to be in development. AT customer support is really(!) responsive and helpful too if you have questions!
Money transfer
As a seller, I like the fact i have the ability now to transfer money out of my AT account and into a bank account. Makes getting the money much easier then the process before.
Love this app
Got to go to places otherwise unreachable
Easy Access
Very easy to get into one of the hardest restaurants to reserve in New York.
Whose name will my reservation be under when I arrive at the venue?
It can be under your name or a name you choose! Some reservation offers already include the AppointmentTrader Transfer Service which will transfer the reservation in to your name. If its not included you can add it on after buying the reservation for a small fee. One thing on that though: As many reservations become available at last minute, taking a reservation in someone else name is quick and great for privacy. Most reservations on AT are listed with a virtual phone number, so all you need to do is present the phone number at the hostess stand and you are good to go!

LOL. Thank you The New Yorker.

Transferring reservations is not supported in AT. Why not just use the name in the AT screenshot?

Same goes for 4 Charles and I Sodi
Prepaid Reservation Fee
Agreed. Ultimately not addressing this month after month is clearly resulting in a drop in certain venue’s rankings & sales.
Congrats on 3 mil
🍾🍾🍾🍾🍾🍾🧨🧨🧨 now on to 30 mill!
Need to cancel a bid, not getting a response… how do I do it?
Click on "Take off the Market Option" in your portfolio
Working on your bid?
Your bid has been “matched” with a reservation. From the time a reservation has been located, the seller of the reservation must connect with moderator to give transfer information for reservation. If the seller;however, does NOT respond to reservation transfer, then your bid is reprocessed and returns to the first step, which is connecting your request to a reservation.
Process after bid is accepted.
Hey @EvocativeFold67, welcome to appointmenttrader! Once the reservation is in your portfolio, you definitely own the timeslot, the review team would not have approved the trade if the reservation wasn't confirmed - so you are going :-) Judging from your post you bid today and are going tomorrow - don't worry as long as you initiated the name transfer, you are good - the transfer service has to work with the opening hours of the reservation team of the respective venue. You will likely see the transfer confirmation a couple hours before your reservation time.
Where do the Reservations on AppointmentTrader come from?
Mostly from people who don't need their reservations or appointments any longer. AT has no relationship with places listed and acts as a platform connecting buyers and sellers making sure that listed reservations are real and that privacy is not compromised when transacting.
What happens if my bid expires unanswered?
Hey @FluffyStar64, thanks for the question! When you place your bid the amount gets transferred in a deposit account, the second you either cancel your bid or a few minutes after the bid expires the funds are moved back into your main account from where you can refund it to your payment method or use for other transactions.
