first of all, service was great.
our server was lovely, patient, and attentive. all of the staff were so friendly and helpful. it was the food that was incredibly disappointing. they state in their menu that their portions are "family style" yet these are some of the smallest portions ive ever been served considering the price points. we started with the $18 caeser salad which was okay! nothing exciting, very anchovy forward dressing (which i dont mind) but this was the biggest portion we received. then we ordered the $24 pesto ravioli. there were only 10 pieces of ravioli about the size of a quarter. also nothing special :/ finally we got the $28 chicken entree which ended up being one bone in chicken thigh... it was so bland :( and just not worth the price. im confused where the "family style" menu is ? i think it's a bit misleading. my boyfriend and i paid $140 with tip and somehow still left hungry and sad.

Excellent food, mostly Italian but they had a couple of things that seem vaguely French (Boudin Blanc?). Decor is eclectic, someone likes Italy, France and The Rolling Stones. We shared a Caesar salad, which was a bit heavy on the radicchio but was still very tasty, then ordered pizze, one each Margherita and Funghi. Both were very good but the Margherita was the best. Excellent pizza crust and sauce. Just the right chew on the crust, and a fresh red sauce on the Margherita, cooked in the oven, not before! So rare and very authentic. The desserts were absolutely divine. We had the fiori di latte (it's a vanilla gelato with lemon curd and pistachio) and the affogato which is an espresso poured over the vanilla gelato. Really surprised at how delicious these were. Only negative was the extremely loud music that had no theme at all, some background music would have been so much better, suggest mid century Italian, some Louis Prima wouldn't go amiss. Think Big Night soundtrack, fabulous!

This was my third or fourth time here, and overall, I was disappointed. The music at times was too loud, and distracting for me and my partner. Some of the food was excellent, like the white bean soup with chickpeas and farro, and the pesto cheese ravioli. I do wish the chickpeas had been a bit more tender. The fennel-citrus-pistachio salad was really disappointing. I've loved it in the past, but I was not a fan of the dressing, which was too strong, or the bitter radicchio (?) that was overpowering as well. This was one of my favorite dishes, and I'm not sure I'll order it again. I was really unhappy with my last two-three bites. I also didn't really taste any pistachio or pistachio texture. The pesto ravioli was good. Nothing mind-blowing, but solid. The negroni I ordered was disappointing as well-- the giant ice cube in the small glass, and the extreme bitterness (but I'll take the blame for that one-- I ordered it and didn't really realize just how bitter it would be-- I forgot which variation it was, but it was too much for me). We also weren't the biggest fans of the Caesar Salad. A little too salty, and I actually don't like the croutons-- they taste too crunchy/crispy. I feel like this place was really good at balancing sweet, creamy, and bitter, and it was amazing, but now it's veering too far into bitter. I understand-- the world is stressful, and mind-blowingly bad at times! But my food doesn't need to bring more unmitigated bitterness into my life. Maybe I'll try to come by in the summer and see if things have lightened up a bit. And see if they have the focaccia! I won't order that fennel salad for a while. p.s. You know what caught me off guard? The $20 IPA!

We needed a restaurant with a chef who has high standards! Quality of food is fantastic, delicious, always consistent . I love the atmosphere, fun and lively. Nice bar. Casual dress.
Be the first to ReplyOne of our favorite spots for food.
Upscale vibe, rotating seasonal menu, great drinks, and near perfect service. If you don't have a reservation, get there well before 5 to get a spot in line before they open

Pretty good We will miss our Aptos home away from home quick bites. Nice area & good people
Be the first to ReplyThe food was cold, the portions were small.
No bread to complement the meal. The food does taste good but the price is super high and the portions are small and it comes cold. Could be a great place if they get their act together.
Be the first to ReplyThis was a terrible experience.
Pizza was wet and inedible. Server did what she could but the cooks set her up cause this was bad.
Be the first to ReplyI visited Mentone recently and unfortunately, my experience
I visited Mentone recently and unfortunately, my experience was marred by the unprofessional behavior of Brian, the supervisor. Throughout my meal, Brian's demeanor was insulting, complete with eye rolls and unwarranted defenses of the kitchen staff. His zero hospitality was evident, and it felt like he provided as much value as a busboy, rather than a supervisor. It's a shame that such behavior overshadowed an otherwise enjoyable dining experience. Management should address this issue to ensure all guests feel welcome and respected.

Stopped by Mentone for the first time yesterday for an early dinner, and loved it! One of the best restaurants in the area. The Caesar salad was one of the best I've ever had-- wish I could get the dressing recipe!:) The croutons in the salad were also spectacular and perfectly crunchy. We had the Margherita pizza which was sooo fresh and light-- simple, but delicious. We also tried the beef ravioli which was amazing. The portion size is small, as some have mentioned, but it was perfect as part of our shared dishes. I love getting a bunch of small things to share, so this was perfect for that. The restaurant is beautifully decorated and not pretentious at all, which I love. It's a vibrant and cozy spot. Also, the service was impeccable. We didn't have to wait long for anything-- the food came out quickly and the servers constantly checked in to make sure we were enjoying our meal and had everything we needed. I didn't have any drinks this time around but I was eyeing the cocktail menu for next time!
Be the first to ReplyThis is about my experience with takeout.
First they don't take orders online, they don't take orders over the phone, if you want takeout, you must go in to place the order. Also they don't service the full menu. They have a limited menu that you can order at the bar. There are no pastas or mains on the menu. The bar was packed with dinners so you have to find a way to order. The bar is reserved for walk-ins, so it is normal packed I assume. I ordered the Ceasar, Focaccia and the Soppressa Pizza. The pizza (5 Stars) was awesome! Great smokey slightly charged flavor crust, perfectly cooked. The dough was thin, perfectly chew. The toppings and cheese were very good quality, not too much of each, great balance. The Caesar salad (4 Stars) was non-traditional, they added radicchio and frisee. Good quality shaved Parmesan. The croutons didn't have much seasoning, but we're very crunchy. The dressing was more on the anchove side but still good. The salad should be served with a lemon wedge, for those who like more lemon. The Focaccia (4 Stars) was very good, nice crust on top with salt and light but with a good chew inside. Until next time...
Be the first to ReplyDear David Kinch, You really need to know how your manager
Dear David Kinch, You really need to know how your manager treats customers. We had a reservation last night at 7:30pm 3/24 and were greeted by a lovely hostess, who directed us to the bar for a drink, as our table was not completely ready. My husband needed to sit down so I asked the hostess if our table was ready and she pointed out our table and said to go ahead and have seat, it is just being set. We sat down and a man came over and asked me if we had a reservation. I said yes, we do have one and also gave him our last name. Instead of saying, ok and checking with the hostess, he stood there and asked me again if we had a reservation, because you need a reservation to get a table. I said yes, and why don't you check with the hostess? He didn't move and looked at me again and asked if I had a reservation (3 times he asked) at that point. I said yes again, annoyed, and asked to speak with the manager, and he said HE WAS THE MANAGER So I called him an asshole, which he was being, and then he kicked us out. Never tasted any food and had to put up with his abusive treatment in a restaurant that is 40$ a dish? Seriously, WTF?He never even bothered to ask the hostess if we had a reservation. Complete dickhead managing your restaurant, shame on you, you can do better than that. I had been trying to get a reservation at Mentone for weeks and finally got one only to be subjected to unbelievably rude manger.Warning to everyone, even with a reservation you may be treated like shit!Had to give 1 star to post this review. Zero Stars is what Mentone deserves.

Delicious food, yummy drinks, great service! Our only caveat is that the serving sizes are so small. Server said they could be shared family style for 2 people, but that was a stretch. Short ribs was 1 rib, scallops and pork belly was 2 small scallops and a 1.5in square pork belly. Pizza could definitely be shared between 2-3, they are 6 small slices total. Other than the meal size though, everything was fantastic.
Be the first to ReplyFor an impromptu date night, we decided to check this place
For an impromptu date night, we decided to check this place out. We got there early, and I hoped they kept a few tables open for walk ins. There was a line 30+ minutes before opening! I've never seen that in Santa Cruz. So we stand in line, and when it opens, we get the last two seats at the bar. The wait was a bit long for service at times, but aside from that, I loved loved loved the food I had, the drinks, and the atmosphere. The music was not loud, and it was a pretty casual place. Ok food: I had this amazing salad that hit so many things-- crunchy, sweet, salty, citrusy, and umami flavor. What was the name? I can't remember. But I remember the taste. I think it had grapefruit in it. And pistachios. Then I had the crab gnocchi. The crab gave the dish a slightly cheesy (like good parmigiana) flavor, and the texture was perfect. I think it was crunchy breadcrumbs on top, a perfect complement to the pillowy creaminess of the sauce and pasta. I also had a slice of their mushroom pizza. I am not a huge mushroom fan, but this pizza was Ah-mazing. The mushrooms had this amazing texture and flavor. Like they had been slightly roasted before being out on the pizza. We shared sorbets for dessert and they were also good. I had the lemon and dark chocolate together.
Be the first to ReplyFirst thing you notice when you walk in is the smell.
It's like marinara spilled on the floor and they never cleaned it up, it also smells a little bit like throw up. Seated at a corner table and didn't get service for a long time while we watched the waitress attend to other tables around us. I've also read from other reviewers that service is a hit or miss so we definitely got the miss this time around.Pizza was pretty good, it had a fluffy crust so the dough was pretty chewy. Not the best pizza we've had but it's solid. Totally would have expected a little more food quality and better service from a Michelin starred chef owned restaurant but maybe he doesn't pay much attention to them so they run it however they want.

This was our 3 time trying Mentone, based on David Kinch we had high expectations only to be disappointed in a big way. First 2 times was during Covid so we gave them a pass. This time we had asked for our pizza to be well done ( last 2 times was severely under cooked & once again it was a soup in the middle. Menu choices were very slim and dish portions were so small we questions if they were entrees? Wine choices were also lacking. The drinks were good, only issue is the glass was filled with a giant ice cube that took up 50% or more of the glass. Last time we for us! Sad as Aptos and Santa Cruz needs quality restaurants and this one is a giant miss!
Be the first to ReplyHad my first meal there last nite.
Oh my God this was super bad. This was my first & last time there...imagine your worse pizza ... well, this is far worse & to top it all more expensive. The chef/cooks need to go back to cooking school to learn the basics. Drinks & food portions are small & 25%-30% more then similar places And let's not talk about the prices of those wines... ridiculous !!!! $150 to $500 a bottle... seriously maybe in a classy restaurant but not a 2 bit pizzeria Did David Kinch have a brain fart when he conceived & opened Mentone. Clearly is has NO business flair what so ever and needs to close this place & start over If you are thinking about eating there.... Turn around and go anywhere... it's going to be fat better
Be the first to ReplyI heard great things about this restaurant.
My husband and I were really disappointed. The service was slow, impersonal, and inattentive. Prices were high and portions small. We ordered bolognese pasta ($28) that was tiny. The pizza was at least 35% crust for the same price. Food was tasty but nothing exceptional and not a good value. Not to be repeated. The emperor does not have new clothing. Ambiance was attractive.
Be the first to ReplyI ordered one entree and my girlfriend got two appetizers
I ordered one entree and my girlfriend got two appetizers and one drink. My entree was the smallest of the three dishes. Smallest pasta entree I've ever seen, arrived basically lukewarm, and they charge $28 for this. My girlfriends eggplant appetizer was $16 and had more food. I did not eat it, told them to take it away. The service was fine, they offered to bring me a pizza or something else instead, but I declined, and just asked them to take it off the bill. The wait staff was fine, and I was not rude at all. But I'm sorry but this place is ridiculous. Won't come back.

Be the first to ReplyWe've been in the Capitola/Aptos area for a year and a half
We've been in the Capitola/Aptos area for a year and a half now, and I was looking forward to trying Mentone. I can't say I was overly impressed, but neither was I overly dissapointed. The outrageous price for their Salumi plate, with the additional cost of a single slice of bread, cut in half. Should have had me ready to leave. There was nothing outstanding about it, it was two different cuts of thinly sliced cure meats...on a plate. No presentation, no extras. It was laughable in its simplicity, but also pretty tasty. Though still not the best I've had even this week. We then shared a Sopresseta pizza. Very well done, traditional Italian style. Tasted great, has a little zing spice to it. Overall a great pizza. The Bellini I order before the meal, tasted great. Was very small, but made up for it in quality ingredients. I would have loved to have a second one, unfortunately no one ever asked. Instead staffers flew around our table cleaning up after us, clearing plates and being efficient, but without any qualms about asking us if we needed anything or wanted anything. Would I go again? Meh. Maybe. But it's when I have a hankering for a great traditional Italian pizza and I'm not looking for anything else.
Be the first to ReplyThis is my 4th time here.
Food is fantastic!I would say the service is great. It was... for all others around me. A slightly racist vibe here. Again, x 4. I keep trying to give this restaurant a break. But, no. X4. Disappointed... x4!If you are Caucasian, 5 stars. If not, no stars.
Be the first to ReplyBest Caesar salad and Pizza in town.
Drinks are always good and nice wine list. Been many times and the food is always great.
Be the first to ReplyFantastic food in a casual setting.
Varied and creative menu selection- all high-end, quality ingredients offered on small plates. Efficient service. The ravioli bolognese was a little salty. We loved the pork belly and scallops. The eggplant was also excellent. Gnocchi with crab was to-die-for. The star of the show was the capellini with truffle.
Be the first to ReplyHostess needs more training.
So many open seats at 12:00 but refused to let my family with a infant child to sit at any of the tables other than a high top table . She said it was an hour wait for any other table. A good hostess would figure it out instead of being happy to turn away patrons.
