Mission Chinese is a delicious hidden gem in the Mission
Mission Chinese is a delicious hidden gem in the Mission District of SF. Their menu has a lot of "classics" with intriguing twists, such as beef broccoli but with brisket or sour chili chicken with potato. The service was prompt, albeit slightly curt, and the food came out quickly. I really liked the two mains that we got but didn't love the smashed cucumber. The dragon hanging from the ceiling was a nice touch as well. Would certainly recommend to anymore wanting some interesting Chinese food in the Mission District in SF!
Be the first to ReplyRecently me and my uncle went out for a bite.
We were originally heading to Bissap Baobab where I just went to a stellar Elite Event. They didn't open until 5:30pm so instead we opted to go to Mission Chinese Food across the street. I knew about Mission Chinese for years and it was in my hood aka the Mission yet never went here until now. Danny Bowien aka chef/restauranteur is known for his creative self described weird Chinese cuisine and Danny even put out a Mission Chinese Vegan Cookbook which is awesome. Many vegan options on the menu that are vegan by default or can be customized vegan. Mission Chinese Food is both veg and non-veg. Danny also opened up a MCF in NYC where he is based and where I am from originally and so is my uncle. Coast to coast CA to NY. SF and NY are two great cities yet very different. Service was just fine and appreciate the recommendations from our waitress. Upon the suggestion of the waitress we went with two orders of Classic Chow Mein with mushrooms and Mongolian Longbeans done up with horseradish and Sichuan peppercorns. The food was quite alright. Ample portions. The longbeans were unique and flavorful with some heat aka spicy and the Chow Mein was good. We each enjoyed our Chow Mein and longbeans we shared family style. Feedback would have been nice to have the option to add tofu to the Chow Mein. Would have liked more veggies in the Chow Mein as here seems you order the veggies separate. Ambiance was spot on with dragon and Asian art/posters on the walls. Hip hop music played which was cool and unexpected. I liked the music. I have dined in places where the music took away from the meal yet here the music was cool so kudos and props to whoever was playing tunes here. Monday morning quarterback for the Sunday game would have shared a Chow Mein, Long Beans, and maybe ordered a tofu dish to get more variety. My uncle gives it three stars. He is a tough critic. I give it four stars. I can make a mean plant strong Chow Mein yet good to mix it up dining out in this lovely little city by the Bay with my uncle. I would return to scope out more of the menu.
Be the first to ReplyWell played, Lung Shan/ Mission Chinese! My budget
Well played, Lung Shan/ Mission Chinese! My budget doesn't allow for as much take-out as I'd like, but this is one of my special treat favorites. I went to pick up a bare bones order today and encountered a trivial snag with an online order submission I wouldn't even have remembered by tomorrow, but the restaurant "made it right" with some gratis apps I've never tried before. I'm not only grateful for this totally unnecessary gesture of service, but now I'm hooked on these apps I've never sprung for in the past and will not be able to resist in future. Food is flavorful, greens are available, peanuts are habit forming. Staff take their jobs seriously and cooks are lightening fast. Thank you!!! Xoxo

I've had this place on my list for awhile as people seem to love it. I found it to be just alright. I think it is interesting how creative their dishes are and a nice fusion that you don't typically get but the flavors weren't blowing me away. I think it's fun to try once but can't see myself needing to return.

Unique menu, delicious flavors, quality food and service, comfortable dining room. Homey and unpretentious.
Be the first to ReplyOne of my favorite spots in SF.
Mapo tofu is delicious as is their rice cake with butter melon dish. Ambiance is great, but price is right. When I have family in town, I always take them here or get takeout.
Be the first to ReplyMy favorite place to eat at or order takeout from.
For real I should earn commission from all the people I refer here! My go to's are: Thrice cooked bacon rice cakes Mapo tofu with mushroom Tiger Salad Chicken Wings Duck Lo Mein Vinegar Peanuts If it's a special day: Tiki pork belly Hamachi collar Honestly everything is so so so so tasty but I tend to get upset if I order things like rice as an entree or pay ~20 for vegetables.

Smashed Cucumbers, Chongqing chicken wings, Pork Mapo Tofu, Cumin Lamb Rib, Taiwanese Eggplant, Sichuan Carbonara, Fried Garlic Rice Dang this place is good!! It's a cute little Chinese fusion place with a huge lantern dragon overhead. Super packed and booked out, our group of almost 10 people were lucky to grab a reservation on a Saturday night. The food is all a very unique, incredibly tasty twist on traditional Chinese food. Highlights to me were the chongqing chicken wings (insanely flavorful) and sichuan carbonara. But everything was so tasty and everyone enjoyed all the dishes!!
Be the first to ReplyJust picked up the pork tofu mapo with rice for lunch.
It was so salty I couldn't eat it. I'm pretty disappointed.
Be the first to ReplyAll around great food.
Love thrice cooked bacon. Service is good. It can be noisy at times but the food makes up for it.

I will always love this place! The vegan thrice cooked bacon is unlike anything else. In fact, you should consider advertising it to pregnant women. I ordered it at 38.5 weeks in an attempt to induce labor by eating spicy food and my water broke 1 hour later! I want to think I'm on to something here.

Mission Chinese is easily one of my favorite restaurants in SF. Note that it is not classic or traditional Chinese food, so if you're looking for that you can find it in the Richmond district or in Chinatown. Mission Chinese delivers a creative take on Chinese food, and specializes in dishes I've never experienced elsewhere (cabbage with pistachio milk! YUM) and the chef puts their own spin on more familiar dishes. The ambiance is cozy and casual, some soft R&B is playing in the background, and you'll dine with a dragon swirling overhead. I'm always excited to come back to Mission Chinese!!
Be the first to ReplyA new take on Chinese food.
I've had a looot of Chinese food, so I have the traditional variation of each of these dishes in mind - and each dish certainly took those traditional flavors and twisted them into unexpected ways. In a good way, of course, albeit *pretty* pricy. We ordered:-Classic Duck Chow Mein ($24)Pretty good. Maybe my least favorite of what we ordered, but perhaps because it is quite "classic" and didn't really stand out/surprise me like the other dishes did.-Thrice Cooked Bacon and Rice Cakes ($21)I can guarantee you that you haven't had something like this before. The bacon adds HUGE flavor. Between the bacon and the spice mix, this sent me to flavortown.-Broccoli Beef Brisket ($22)Like the bacon in the rice cake dish, the brisket brings a lot of flavor. This dish is perfect over rice as the sauce it sits in is delightful.Okay, so the food was great. But you look at the photo and tell me if this three-item spread was worth almost $80 after tax and the delivery fee (I mean, WAY better than if I ordered through Doordash, but hmmm.) I probably won't order again for a weeknight meal, but for a special occasion, sure.
Be the first to ReplyBEST BROCCOLI BEEF IVE EVER HAD?! Used actual Chinese
BEST BROCCOLI BEEF IVE EVER HAD?! Used actual Chinese broccoli instead of regular and that's life changing. Meat was also ridiculously tender. I will say my fav item on the menu was the eggplant. Phenomenal. Sensational. I could eat it every day for the rest of my life. Also, their one singular cocktail on the menu is so good. Can't go wrong here (unless it's the sichuan carbonara, then you can go wrong)
Be the first to ReplyI live by Chinatown so I thought that I had ventured
I live by Chinatown so I thought that I had ventured through the best Chinese food SF had to offer. But I was very impressed by Mission Chinese Food. The menu offers dishes I've never seen before and well worth the try. Honestly, it may be some of the best I've ever had. You may be concerned about the price at first, but be aware that they give you 2-3 meals worth of food. Therefore it is great for takeout or delivery.
Be the first to ReplyThe raddest hidden gem.
I am obsessed with every dish (fav might be the salt cod fried rice) and how cozy the interior is. I recommend this place to everyone who visits SF!
Be the first to ReplyFood is flavorful but way too salty.
I personally think its a little over priced. I also noticed some CO2neutral surcharge on the food bill. They say diners may opt out but come on, they are not given the option of opting out . Please don't push another surcharge on top of the health tax. Let people make their independent choices about caring for the climate. Speaking of climate, there is human poop and trash right outside the restaurant. Perhaps you can begin by cleaning that?

YUM! Came here with my family on a Thursday night (no reservations) and we were seated right away. We ordered the Thrice cooked bacon and rice cakes, General Tso's Baby Back Pork Rib, Sichuan Carbonara, Ginger scallion and chicken fat fried rice, and Mongolian long beans for the five of us which was the perfect amount of food without us being stuffed. Thrice cooked bacon and rice cakesI think this was personally my favorite dish. I loved all the different flavors and textures in this dish from chewy rice cakes to crunchy bacon with small black beans that added great flavor. I also loved the sweet tofu skin.General Tso's Baby Back Pork RibDEF. get this! The glaze and sauce was so amazing and the meat was so tender that it just fell off the bone. I never had General Tso prepared this way and it's not your typical General Tso sauce. Also be careful of the red peppers in the sauce! They're spicy!Sichuan CarbonaraThis was a very mild dish in terms of flavor but I think it actually paired really well with all the other food we ordered since the other dishes we ordered were very flavorful. The noodles were also super chewy which I love.Ginger scallion and chicken fat fried riceThis dish was my family's favorite. They loved the green sauce that the rice came with and how gingery the dish was.Mongolian long beansIf you're looking for a veggie dish, I recommend this! It's a flavorful way to add some green to your plate.
Be the first to ReplyDecent modern Chinese food .
.. but a little over priced for what it is . I had the twice cooked bacon .. it's usually very spicy. Watch out
