Monteverde is an acclaimed Italian restaurant from Top Chef
Monteverde is an acclaimed Italian restaurant from Top Chef season 9 runner up and James Beard award winner Sarah Grueneberg. Any foodie from Chicago is more than aware of this West Loop hot spot and it is definitely near the top of their "must eat at" list. However, the acclaim and popularity of this place makes it one of the harder reservations to snag in Chicago. While you can likely book something for lunch, dinner reservations are nearly impossible to come by. So, when a buddy of mine surprised me with one, I was absolutely ecstatic! I have heard that Monteverde is the best restaurant in the West Loop and given that its neighboring restaurants are heavy hitters of the Chicago food scene, I can definitely see why after dining here. The restaurant is spacious and has an upscale vibe without coming off as pretentious. All the pasta is cooked to order and you can actually see it being made from the reflection of an overhead mirror right above their pasta making station. It's a really nice touch that I've yet to see in other restaurants. There's a large mirror in the dining room that's unnoticeable at first. It's tricks you into thinking the restaurant is bigger than it is, but it adds depth to the dining area. It's actually quite clever. The first dish to come out was the nduja arancini. It was served over a delicious sauce which complimented the zest of the nduja. Very solid snack to start off the meal. The wagyu beef skewer was cooked to perfection and very tasty, but I imagine certain diners might not appreciate the portion size. I'm a quality over quantity guy, so I had no issues with it whatsoever. Our first shared plate was the burrata e ham with prosciutto butter, which is arguably their signature dish. Every food critic or influencer raves about it and with good reason. It was absolutely delicious and I honestly wish I could've kept the whole thing to myself. This is a must order. Next we were served the gnochetti con pesto and cacio whey pepe. Two pasta dishes I have never had before. They were fantastic and left me wanting to order another pasta off the menu. The rest of my party were starting to get full and decided to tap out. Since I knew that I might not get the opportunity to dine here anytime soon, I insisted we try at least one dessert. Everyone on Yelp and Instagram seems to love the tiramisu, so that seemed like the most logical choice. My buddy also said the forgotten cookie is also worth trying so we ordered one of those, as well. The cookie is made up of meringue, dark chocolate, and topped with toasted coconut. It's very light and airy, which is not what comes to mind when you think of a cookie, but it was awesome. The size of the tiramisu is generous and incredibly photogenic. I have actually not eaten that much tiramisu throughout the years, but this was by far the best I have had. The perfect way to cap off a meal of this caliber. This dinner was beyond satisfying and I am just itching to come back here, because this place definitely lives up to the hype. But like I mentioned before, it is very difficult to secure a dinner reservation here. God forbid this spot is featured on the newest season of The Bear. If you've been wanting to try this place out, then I implore you to keep your eye on Resy for anything that's available. Set a notification for any cancelled reservations if you have to. Or just book something for lunch because Monteverde is the real deal.

Monteverde is the one restaurant I was dying to try on our Chicago trip... it did not disappoint! We absolutely loved everything we ordered. Our group of four were not super hungry-- we filled up sharing the Artichoke & Sunchoke Cristiano (small but delicious), the CACIO WHEY PEPE (thick sauce and noodles- chef's kiss), Spaghetti Al Pomodoro (add a meatball, you won't regret it), and, the STAR OF THE SHOW: the GNOCCHETTI CON PESTO. The pesto is light, fresh, perfect in every way.

Food is amazing! The pasta is freshly made and the service is very good. Loved the black truffle pasta!
Be the first to ReplyA bit overrated if you ask me.

Made a same day reservation on a Wednesday afternoon and got seated immediately when my gf and I flew in. They have a check in for your luggages which was nice to have while we were waiting for our hotel room to be ready. It was still crowded but not super loud where you need to yell across the table to have a conversation. Our waitress, Racquel, was so fast and attentive as well as everyone else putting away empty dishes or refilling your water cups. The food was so good and oh my lord that birthday cake was even better. They really put their hard work into making their pasta (which you can see if you're sitting at the bar area) and it shows. Love this place! Glad I saw it after watching an episode on Feeding Phil. AND they have a lot of vegetarian options which was a plus. Although you should be mindful that you're going to pay a pretty penny and the portions will not be big because this place is on the Michelin guide and I think won a James Beard award.

It took me awhile to get into this place and I wasn't sure how I'd like the menu as nothing really grabbed me when I looked online. However once I tried it, I was hooked. Everything here is absolutely 5 stars. The chef puts together unexpected tastes and combinations that blow your mind, they use quality ingredients and have excellent service. It's tough to get a reservation so we'll go early or late and sit at the bar- which is one of my favorite things to do now.

i think about monteverde OFTENNN. this place lives in my mind rent freeeee!!! everything is good af, and i wouldn't lie. the service was great, food came out quick, my water cup was never empty. it's a lil crowded in there, but baby i don't even care!
Be the first to ReplyMonteverde offers an exquisite dining experience.
As you enter, the warm and inviting ambiance sets the stage for a memorable meal. I had the pleasure of trying their ragu Each bite was a burst of flavor that left me craving more. The service at Monteverde is impeccable, with attentive staff who are passionate about the food they serve. While Monteverde is on the pricier side, the quality of the food and the overall experience make it well worth it. Whether you're a pasta aficionado or simply looking for a fantastic meal, Monteverde is a must-visit destination.

My wife and I went to an Italian restaurant last night and shared a green salad, cheese ravioli and spaghetti with tomato sauce. But the restaurant was Monteverde and the three dishes--Oma's salad, egg yolk raviolo and spaghetti al pomodoro--were all fabulous. Flavors popped. The cheese in the ravioli was exquisitely creamy. The salad dressing was perfect. I've lived in Chicago for nearly 40 years and can't remember a better meal in the city. I tried to think of when I'd eaten food of this quality and could only come up with two meals at Michelin-starred restaurants in France. Monteverde is that good. The ambience is very nice, contemporary but not pretentious. Our server Brett was informative and friendly. The place was packed and a bit noisy, but my wife and I (both in our 70s) were able to converse (mainly about how we were loving every bite.) The two wines we had were both very good. It's pricey, and getting a reservation requires almost military precision, but, if you can afford it, it's well worth it. Monteverde's kitchen is world class.
Be the first to ReplyI'll keep this short.
This is hands down, without argument or debate, the best Italian restaurant in Chicago. It in fact is always a talking point when discussing the best Italian restaurants in the country. The menu is ever changing, but the food never disappoints. Amazing flavors, fresh pasta (they literally make it in front of you), and creative dishes. A classic Chicago corner restaurant with a great vibe and pride in what they do. Everyone who works there knows exactly what they are doing and is focused on giving you the best dining experience possible. 6/5 stars!!!

Zero photos because I was too busy enjoying every single bite! Such a cozy atmosphere and the sweetest staff. Literally every dish we ordered - and we ordered A LOT - was delicious. Highlights were the artichoke crostino, gnocchetti con pesto and spaghetti al pomodoro.

Great spot but tough to get a reservation! We started with the burrata e ham, which claimed the show. The 2 pastas we tried were both good but the cacio e Pepe was veryyyyyy Al dente (some pieces were legit CRUNCHY). The pesto gnocchi was really good with the pine nuts. Overall, quite satisfied and lived up to expectations.

Absolutely phenomenal! The burrata e ham is the best thing on the menu! The bread was so warm and soft, with a perfect balance of prosciutto and burrata, top it all off with the prosciutto butter, literal perfection! All of the pastas were amazing, and definitely try the chicken Milanese! It's hard to get tables but if you set Resy alerts they often have tables the week of. The service is wonderful and they always have good recommendations. Highly recommend for a special occasion, team dinner, or just another Friday night!
Be the first to ReplySnagging a reservation even on a Wednesday night can be
Snagging a reservation even on a Wednesday night can be tough at Monteverde. Secret tip: They take walk ins! I went by myself, and even though the place was jam packed by 6pm, I was able to snag a prime spot at the bar. One of the best seats imo, because you get to see the pasta being made. VIBE: Moody, a little loud, but still a good spot for getting dinner with a girlfriend, significant other, or just by yourself. SERVICE: Even in a packed room, I never felt forgotten here. The service was attentive, and orderly. DRINKS: I ordered the "La Ora" cocktail. It's described as citrusy, delicate, pleasing, but the ingredients didn't feel blended enough. The first sip had too much "alcohol", and only until the ice started melting did the flavours feel less "intense". It wasn't delicate at all, but rather like breathing in alcohol. Wine would have been a better call here as they have an extensive list of great wines.APP: Lilian's Stuffed Cabbage: This is the dish worth waiting for. One of the best dishes i've ever had, and completely vegetarian. The richness and umami flavours from the mushrooms was incredible. Perfectly seasoned, the tomato sauce is not heavily acidic, but sweet. The only element that could have been improved on was the polenta. It was too salty compared to the cabbage, and a little over fried. Next time, i'll add-on the egg for a little runny yolk action. PASTA: Gnocchetti Con Pesto: Let me start off by saying, "I love pesto". I love how refreshing it can be, and that's what I was looking for, but eating this dish after the amazing stuffed cabbage was a mistake. I was under the assumption that pestos are normally very "light" dishes, but this one was extremely rich, and overly salty. Visually, this dish was stunning, and it was fun to watch the ricotta melt and turn into a thick sauce that coated the pasta. But it was too much sauce, i would have preferred half of the ricotta served. The texture of the Gnocchetti was phenomenal though, and had just enough bite. Next time I'll try their Chitarra Alla Norcina or Cacio Whey Pepe instead. DESSERT: Chocolate Dipped Forgotten Cookie: An elevated macaroon brought to new heights by the meringue. I heard that their Tiramisu was incredible, but it's also massive, so I decided on something smaller. Unlike a lot of restaurants where dessert isn't given a second thoughts, every item on the dessert list seemed like a hit at Monteverde, and this "humble" cookie was no exception. I should have asked for more of these.

You can never go wrong with any of their food - everything tastes fresh and the flavors all balance so well together. Their rotating special and seasonal menu also keep things exciting. Great cocktails in addition to an impressive wine selection. Getting a reservation can be nearly impossible but the staff is very friendly and accommodating.

No complaints. I definitely would come back and try other menu items.
Be the first to ReplyIf you're a fan of Italian food, you will love Monteverde.
It's great for all occasions - date night, a nice dinner with friends or family, you name it. I truly don't think you could go wrong here with anything you order (including cocktails) but:- Burrata e ham: Obviously the burrata is amazing, but this was also the best prosciutto I've ever had. It was soft and flavorful and rich without being too salty. And the sweet and spicy mostarda was the perfect complement to savory ham and creamy cheese. Do yourself a favor and start your meal with this.- Pasta: We tried a pasta special that had coin-shaped pasta and rock shrimp. (This was like 6 months ago so it may not be around anymore!) Really tasty, perfectly cooked pasta, and I had never had that pasta shape before so it was fun to try something new.- Cherry pepper chicken a la plancha: I was disappointed that the chicken parm wasn't on the menu when I visited but this did not disappoint. The chicken was perfectly crispy on the outside, moist and flavorful on the inside, plus the sauce had a delicious acidity. Truly there is no way you can have a bad meal here. Just remember to make a reservation because it fills up!

I was so excited to try Monteverde after finally getting a reservation. The ambiance is beautiful and the staff was friendly but the food didn't live up to the hype. We got the burrata appetizer which was probably my favorite dish, but wasn't the best I've ever had. The pasta was okay. We heard so much about this place we came in with high expectations but I personally think there's better Italian food in the city.
Be the first to ReplyThis deserves atleast 2 Michelin stars.
The pasta is phenomenal. The cocktails were great. Service was second to none.
Be the first to ReplyMonteverde is my #1 Chicago Italian restaurant.
Why I love this place is because of how fresh their ingredients are, and how they put a modern spin on authentic Italian. There are days where I crave the burrata and ham appetizer. The dish is truly one of a kind and magical... order it and you will be so thankful you did! I also love the seasonal menu items, and how their menu is constantly fluctuating to accommodate the freshest ingredients and seasonal tastes.

Service: 5/5 We had multiple people waiting on us yet it was unobtrusive. Took us as a walk-in and squeezed us in on a busy Friday night.Atmosphere: 4/5 Dark, loud and seats are not super comfortable. Tables are spacious and not crowded. Tuscan/ Industrial look.Food quality: 5/5Everything is fresh and flavorful. Braised lamb ravioli was tasty and well presented. Meatball (side) sold as each. Very tasty. Pappardelle was flavorful, fresh and presented well. Wine (Sangiovese Chianti) was excellent.Value: 4/5You want get higher quality Italian fair anywhere else but you wont pay more anywhere else either. Portions are on the small side and no sides are included. They add a 4% surcharge onto every check to augment employee Healtchare & benefits.Recommendation: Small groups. Families. Not a romantic, quiet, comfortable place with rat pack lounge music. Not "old school" but very good. Dust off your wallet.
Be the first to ReplyMonteverde is worth the hype!! I tried making a reservation
Monteverde is worth the hype!! I tried making a reservation here for weeks and it never worked. Finally, I decided to try walking in on a Thursday night & there was only a 20 minute wait! It was also very affordable for an upscale, italian restaurant in West Loop, Chicago. I think I spent around $40 with tip for an appetizer and entree. Worth every penny, I would've been willing to pay more - it was that good. This is one of those places you want to go with a group, so you can order a bunch of things and share all of it. A must have from here is the Burrata E Ham (make sure to add the prosciutto butter). It looks confusing when it comes out, but you're supposed to take the little breads it comes with and make mini sandwiches with the prosciutto, burrata and other toppings it comes with. The prosciutto butter was to die for. One of the best things I've ever had. Another favorite from this meal was the Gnocchetti Con Pesto. It has fresh pine nuts and giant flakes of parmesan on top, which was my favorite part about the dish. The gnocchi and pesto sauce melted in my mouth - truly amazing. I've never had a better pesto dish. They start you off with long, skinny, crunchy bread sticks. They are very light which is perfect because trust me - you do not want to be filling up on bread or anything else for that matter before your food comes out. Our food came out pretty quickly & the service was amazing. Our serve gave us a run down of the whole menu and told us what he recommend the most. Highly recommend going here, everything was so delicious.
