100% yes.

Do it. Get there early. Wait in line. We decided to get in line around 9:45 am for the 11am opening. We were the 2nd group in line. Very few people showed up between 9:45-10:15. I would still advise getting there earlier rather than later. Everyone on the line was really friendly and chatty- it was the enthusiasm of fellow travelers and foodies who wanted to experience something unique and delicious. Your beverage options are water, sweet tea, or unsweetened ice tea, this will be the easiest choice of the session. The table is set with over a dozen items when you arrive. The family does a little prayer, then it's holiday family style. Take an item, and pass to the left. Don't be slow, keep it moving, or the plates will pile up in your space. Everything is worth trying, and the seasoning is perfect. I didn't need or want any salt/pepper or condiments. Favorites include (but are not limited to): Fried chicken (it's a must), pasta and peas, the cornbread pudding (I forget what it's called, I just know I liked it), beef stew, cole slaw. Also, side note, I don't love pulled pork, but I tried a little bit, and the sauce on that pork was SO good. Make sure to leave room for dessert too! There was banana pudding and peach crumble with ice cream (I had the peach). $30 per person, cash only; ATM available on the premises. Life hack: there is a coffee shop caddy corner to Mrs. Wilkes, get there early, go there first, grab a little beverage, and then proceed to wait in line at Mrs. Wilkes.

If you leave Mrs.

5/5 by 👻 @Fran S. on 07/24/2024

Wilkes' Dining Room hungry then you just don't like food or you are a strict vegan. This is Southern cooking and hospitality at its finest. I would suggest you get in that long line early if you don't want to wait for the other guests to sit through their meal. It took about an hour before we were able to get seated, but during the wait, the red provided plenty outdoor seating that was strategically placed to blend in with the old architectural style of the surroundings. Also, they provided a delicious cooler of fresh cold water to drink in the humid Georgia sun. Once inside you sit at a long dinner sized table. If you are alone or with a few people then you get to sit with strangers at this family style dining which is a perfect way to meet new friends. We had a large party of ten, so we filled in our table very comfortably. Now the parade of food. If I miss something, it's because there were so many different dishes that I literally forgot I either ate or was placed on the table. There were two big trays of fried chicken, bowls of greens, okra and some tomatoes, creamed corn, black eyed peas, cabbage, sweet potato soufflé, corn, pulled pork, stewed beef with carrots and potatoes, dressing, potatoes, macaroni and cheese, pickled cucumbers, plates of biscuits and cornbread, and a few other bowls I just cannot remember. When you finished one bowl as a table, another one was promptly replaced. After the meal, there was either a choice of banana pudding or ice cream or both! Boy oh boy! Mrs. Wilkes has been a long Savannah staple since I was a child. One of the famous traditions held throughout the years is that you are required to bring your plate to the kitchen when you are done eating because there "ain't no maids in here." I'm telling you now, if you're in Savannah either through residency or visiting, please put this on your bingo card! Thanks.

We started this journey around 9am arrived at 10am to stand

5/5 by 👻 @Kea M. on 07/19/2024

We started this journey around 9am arrived at 10am to stand on the line for an hour. Once the clock struck 11am the staff hurried people to their tables. The room seemed like you were dining inside someone's warm and inviting home. The tables were filled with lots and lots of delicious smelling southern dishes. I took some pictures but it was after the feast. The friendly and attentive staff went around the room to see if you ate all of one of the dishes and then bring you another. The room was filled family style and you got to make new friends as you chowed down on fried chicken, roast beef and potatoes, cabbage, mashed potatoes, black eyed peas, cucumber salad, okra salad, macaroni salad, Mac and cheese and more!!! I will not eat again for the entire day . So glad we drove 5 hours to take a bite into the a grand meal that could feed a king and his kingdom!!

What a fun experience. I've been to a few family styled restaurants but never with bunch of strangers. We ended up having so much fun!! Food was very much southern comfort food and delicious fried chicken ahhhhh.... We left there so stuffed and happy. Only reason I couldn't give solid 5 was they only take cash. After I had to use a shady ATM machine my bank send me an alert. lol Next time I will take my whole family

Honestly, this is the best food my husband and I have eaten since being in Savannah. We got there around 10:30 and people were already hanging out outside. Doors open at 11, and thankfully we were able to be seated really quickly! There wasn't a single thing on the table that we didn't like. You can tell everything is homemade and it's all done so well. We sat with a family and it was cool being able to talk to different people and hear others stories. All of the employees were super nice and helpful. Absolutely would recommend coming here if you're in town. 5

Delicious Southern Cuisine

5/5 by 👻 @Compass29433210874 on 07/05/2024

This is a very unique southern dining experience. We had a 45 minute wait for lunch on a Wednesday, which I understand to be typical. It is family style dining at tables for 10 people. They offer a very large variety of southern cuisine. We enjoyed tasting most of the items they offered. The fried chicken was delicious! The staff were very friendly, and quick to bring more of any food item we requested. Mrs. Wilkes is a Savannah institution, and I think it is a fun way to experience southern cooking. They have been in business since 1943, and still have a 30 minute to an hour wait daily. That in itself is impressive to me. I highly recommend including this restaurant in your visit to Savannah.

There's going to be a wait, but it's worth it.

5/5 by 👻 @W W. on 07/05/2024

They only accept cash or check, but there is an ATM on site. Showed up at the 11 o'clock opening time and were seated at 12:30. They do have water, restrooms, and some bench seating available during the wait. The best way I can describe it is that it's like a Thanksgiving dinner without turkey or cranberry sauce! Fried Chicken, Roast Beef, and Pulled Pork, along with (seriously) at least 20 sides, all served family style at table for 10, along with biscuits, corn bread, sweet tea, and banana pudding or cobbler for dessert. If you leave here hungry, it's your own fault!

Don't forget your stretch pants!

4/5 by 👻 @thetravelorganizer on 06/30/2024

You’ll find Mrs. Wilkes’ Dining Room on virtually every list of Savannah dining recommendations: #6 on TripAdvisor, Conde Nast Traveler (which advises readers to “(b)reak out the stretchy pants”), top listing on the Food Network’s list of “Best Restaurants in Savannah,” etc. You can’t make a reservation and there is always a line on Savannah’s most picturesque street when Mrs. Wilkes’ doors open at 11:00am weekdays (closed weekends). Inside, eight tables seating 8-12 each are spread across 2 rooms. Tables are filled, one at a time, so that the first group seated is getting ready for dessert when the chairs at the last table are being filled. We joined the line at 10:30am on a Wednesday and were at the last table filled in the first seating. When you sit down, the table is already overflowing with dishes of every Southern side imaginable: collard greens, black-eyed peas, sweet potato souffle, macaroni and cheese, okra gumbo, cornbread, biscuits, etc. The star entree is Southern fried chicken, but you can also expect to find platters of smoked sausage, stewed beef, and meat loaf on your table. This all-you-can-eat meal costs $30 (ages 13+) or $15 (12 and under), cash only. Save room for dessert; there’s always banana pudding and often peach cobbler – and don’t forget the stretchy pants.

Mrs. Wilkes's Dining Room is a great experience if you're

5/5 by 👻 @Tekia H. on 06/28/2024

Mrs. Wilkes's Dining Room is a great experience if you're in Savannah. The food is really a great reflection of Southern cooking, and I should know because I was raised on this type of food. The food is served family style, so depending on your party size, you may be sharing your meal with strangers. Honestly, it's actually a fun way to meet new people. Pros: The food was excellent and plenty enough to eat. Cons: The restaurant hours are Monday through Friday from 11am-2pm and there general is a line to wait for eating. Please also note that you have to pay cash, but if you don't have cash, they do have an ATM in the building thank goodness. If you are in Savannah for a trip, I would hands down recommend trying the experience. The food was delicious, and the experience is so unique.

We went for the food but it ended up being much more than that. We went on a weekday and got in line at 10:45. Our wait was a little over an hour, but once inside we ate immediately. The food was amazing and abundant. The people we met at our table were delightful and from all over. The highlight was chatting with Mrs Wilkes granddaughter Marsha. What a treasure. Between the great niece who gives you some history before you enter to the amazing staff, you will fully experience southern hospitality. This food is mouth watering and obviously made with care and love. I didn’t think a meal would be my favorite part of Savannah, but it was!

Amazing food and singular experience. Don’t miss it!

5/5 by 👻 @Ann T on 06/20/2024

Fabulous! It was my first time to Mrs. Wilkes’. Wasn’t quite sure it would be my thing - and was a little concerned that the food wouldn’t live up to the hype. I needn’t have worried. The entire experience knocked my socks off in the best possible way. Although the wait in line outside was long, Mrs. Wilkes’ granddaughter, who came out to greet folks waiting in line and to offer cold water on a very warm, sunny afternoon, was a kind, gracious dear. The food was amazing! Completely exceeded expectations and justified the wait in line. If you are on the fence about trying this place, listen up: DO IT. Make use of your time in line to meet your fellow diners. You will be rewarded with piping hot, delicious southern food. And a chance to meet interesting folks at your table that you wouldn’t otherwise have had the opportunity to share a delicious meal with. (One tip: bring hand-sanitizer in your purse or pocket; meals are served family-style and you might want to have clean hands before passing around platters of delicious food and/or picking up that piece of amazing fried chicken.)

Second time, 14 years apart. Just as good as the first visit. A few things to be aware of as of our visit yesterday… 1) Exactly $30 per person plus tip. Cash only. There is an zATZm on site. 2) Be ready to wait in line. We went at about 1:00-they are open 11-2 only. It was HOT and sunny. They do provide cold water. Yes, they let you use the restroom. Be prepared to wait. Take the time to enjoy chatting with the people around you and keep smiling. EVERY SINGLE PERSON we saw come out, plus us, said it was worth the wait. IF you like good country cooking. Likes and scalloped potatoes were my favorites and my husband liked the okra and the banana pudding best. 3) Keep your fingers crossed that everyone at your table understands to pass all of the bowls😂😂. 4) They are very efficient and friendly st getting your table served and keeping the bowls and glasses of water or tea full. All this said, enjoy the event. If you get irritated you won’t enjoy it!!! I will go back if we’re back in Savannah!

After many years of going to Savannah we finally ate at Mrs. Wilkes. We went on a Monday. Arrived just before 11am and waited in line for 1 hour 15 minutes for a table. The food is fantastic. The only thing is that there are so many items (that all taste great) it's a bit food overdose. Too many options to have room to try and we felt guilty not finishing everything. Wish they served fewer items (and reflected price in that). And, they ONLY ACCEPT CASH. $30 per person.

We were a bunch of friends visiting in Feb, so it was off season, we still waiting on a line to get in but it wasn't terrible. We know the line is known to wrap the block in season. So worth it. They just keep bringing food to the table. You sit with strangers which is fun! We were overwhelmed by the deliciousness. Service is amazing. We met Mrs. Wilkes granddaughter. As so many other visitors have commented - Mrs Wilkes is such a worthwhile experience. The line is long but organised. They take in 4 x 10 people in the first sitting then after about 29 mins a second set of 4x 10 people. As great niece says in her welcome - once you are in there are no more waits as the tables are set with so many southern comfort dishes including the infamous fried chicken. Every dish is yummy. Eating with at least 8 other strangers is only temporarily uncomfortable as the ice is easily broken by discussing the delicious food. You pay your $30 per head on leaving - no cards accepted just cash or cheque. Highly recommend.

Mrs. Wilkes is the Southern Comfort Food Grandma Everyone Needs!

A true southern comfort food experience. Start your day by skipping breakfast...trust me, if you don't, you will wish you had! Mrs. Wilkes Dining Room is a scenic walk from the river front. We arrived at 10:45 am and were the second couple in line. When we left the line wrapped around the corner! I can appreciate there's a long wait if you are not in the first or second group to eat. You will be guided in to sit at a table with about 10 other people. Don't be shy, you may be amazed at who you meet! We had such a great time eating and conversing with our tablemates, one of which was Mr. Wilkes, I completely forgot to take photos...a first for me! But a true testament to how delicious the food and amazing the company was! Food is served family style. It is all you can eat. Bring a second stomach, you will need it! We never felt rushed. It is well worth the $30 per person charge. 🛑 They only accept cash or check. But don't fear, there is an ATM on site for those who forget. As has been previously stated bring cash and get there early. We got there at 10:20 on a Friday and didn't get seated til 12. Not much to do in line except for people watching. Other than the line to the restaurant was a pretty quiet street. It was encouraging to see that people could barely walk when they left the restaurant. Easy to find, just look for the long line. Served family style with the food already at the table when you are seated. Over 20 side dishes, fried chicken, pulled pork. I was so excited I forgot to take pictures. Best fried chicken I can remember. The sides were okay, perhaps I didn't pay too much attention to the sides after eating so much chicken. Skip the desserts, stick to the chicken. Would get there before 10:20

This was our first time here, even though I had lived in Savannah for several years, for some reason I never made the time to check this place out even though I heard fantastic reviews. Well, it did not disappoint. Make sure you come hungry! We arrived about 1115 and we're in the second seating, only had to wait about 20 minutes. Hostess outside gives a great history of the place while you wait. Once we were seated at a large table with another small group, the spread was laid out before us. As a kid growing up in rural Louisiana, this reminded me of Sunday dinner at my grandmother's house. From the piping hot fried chicken to every delicious southern side dish you could imagine, everything was phenomenal. A few of my favorites were the cabbage, turnip, greens, black-eyed peas, and fried okra. The fried chicken, was some of the best I've ever had. Totally Worth the Wait

5/5 by 👻 @Kristen W on 02/16/2024

The food is as delicious as you hope it’ll be! Here’s how it works (posting these details because I couldn’t find this info when I searched prior to going): We arrived at 10:15 on a Friday and the line was already about 80ish people long. We were finally seated a few minutes after noon. There are eight tables that each sit eight. So, if you’re further back in line than 64, you won’t get seated when they first open. Once they seat all of them, no one else will be seated until a full table leaves. All of the food and sweet tea is already on the table when you sit down. Don’t worry about not getting to each bowl of food, they’ll be refilled if you need more. I read some advice to take one spoonful of each thing - that’s great advice. There’s a TON of different dishes. And definitely save room for dessert, both options are absolutely delicious. The staff are all super sweet, we didn’t feel at all rushed. But, knowing there was still a line of folks waiting, the kind thing to do is finish up, get up, pay and go. You’ll need a bit of walking around to work that meal off! No credit cards accepted, by the way, so make sure you remember to bring cash.

It's all true; the food is that good and it is cash only

5/5 by 👻 @Nic B. on 02/08/2024

It's all true; the food is that good and it is cash only just as The Good Lord intended (taxation is theft). More importantly, let's talk about the rain or shine WAIT and how to appropriately do so: Get in line an hour before they open OR don't bother coming. Seriously. Assuming you do, have coffee, bottled water, an umbrella, some deodorant, sun visor, face wipes, dry shampoo and maybe a banana or an apple with you: It is a LONG wait on a sidewalk with absolutely nothing comfortable nearby. Electing someone to stand in line for your party will result in your party not getting seated. Furthermore, the waiting in line is part of the process: This is when all of the socializing and mingling takes place as once you are inside, it's all business (more about that later). Did I mention a long wait? In a line? On a sidewalk, elbow to bum hole? Good. With that in mind, this is not a place for kids under 12. There are marrywanna seegars, beer funnels and the occasional debauchery one may associate with a frat house. The neighborhood itself is an AirBNB hot spot for sex, drugs and rock n roll. If the thought of your grandma reliving the first time she saw Mick Jagger frightens you, it's possible this Waffle House patrons after a bar night line isn't for you. Most people are dressed in a "come as you are" outfit; Some ran out of their hotel with wet heads and in stretchy pants while others clearly partied all night and this is the final stop before retiring to sleep off their espresso Martinis turned Jager Bombs: Just congratulate the bride-to-be and hand her maid of honor $10 to cover the flamboyant male stripper who is still clearly working but is now well into OT. Mingle in the line. No one is dressing up to come here. There are people from all 4 corners of the globe of a wide demographic and you all share the common trait of FOOD being your love language. Otherwise you wouldn't wait 2 hours. We had front row seats of a man busting his wife coming out of one of the AirBNB's across the street. I don't partake in the devil's lettuce however it was plentiful and peacefully offered and passed around. A lady with a Shitti insulated backpack on had everything from Jello Shots to Jameson Picklebacks for $2 cash. Some older guy had a baby doll in a stroller and offered the booger sugar for $20. Cash only. There were tobacco smokers and sweed smokers and then *bam* a toddler appeared. I cannot stress this enough: The line the neighborhood and the wait is not kid friendly. Get a sitter! When the line does move, it does so in increments of 10 every 3 minutes. One thing about Mrs Wilkes is they know how to pack the house and turnover tables which are, again, 10 tops. You will be herded inside like cattle, table set with food already placed and instructed to eat. And eat you will: This is not the time for talking, we already did that outside. For 2 hours. You're given 20 minutes, 25 at most, to pass dishes, funnel the greatness into your face and after one opportunity for any food or drink refills, your wait staff appears with dessert selections. Grab two. Inhale those. Take your dishes to the window, leave a $60 cash with the cashier and get on back to wherever you will be sleeping the experience off. HECK YES I recommend this place. If you do nothing else in Savannah this is wholly worth the travel to experience.

This is a legendary place when coming to Savannah.

5/5 by 👻 @Nick P. on 01/19/2024

You'll know you're in the right place when you see a ridiculous long line for lunch. I recommend coming early before they open which is 11 am. It's normal to stand in line for over an hour or more. It depends on when you got there. It's $30 with tax included for all you can eat southern food. Cash or check only. Once it's your turn, you and your group sit at a table and share with another group of strangers. If you're a social person then you'll have no problem starting up a conversation. Food portions are generous since you're sharing and passing it around. Just to clarify, they do not rush you. You simply just eat until you're full then they bring you dessert at the end. I loved the tea, it was not too sugary. I would say they had the best fried chicken I've ever tasted. Very succulent and moist inside. Skin is full of flavor from the seasonings. I loved the food overall and wished I could come here often.

Semi southern. Good gives a bad name for southern cooking

The food is out of a can or box. The banana pudding is jello with a few banana and wafers out of box. It is cooked southern style. Not worth the time or money.

Best southern food in Georgia!

5/5 by 👻 @Miles M on 12/15/2023

This was the best food I've had in Georgia! Fun experience eating with strangers. There was a wait but it was so worth it. Recommend to arrive 45 min before opening. Food was fantastic! Everything I imagined southern food to be. All the side dishes were incredible and loved the fried chicken. Staff was very pleasant. Highly recommend!

Got in line around 10:30 and waited about an hour and a half to be seated, but there is a full table of food waiting for you once you sit down. There were so many yummy things to try and I had so much fun enjoying the meal with other diners, I was actually there solo as my friend had to leave Savannah early, and I'd say it's the perfect place for a solo meal since you're seated with others anyway! The fried chicken was obviously great, other favorites were the cole slaw, the collard greens, and the pickled cucumbers! Make sure you're ready for a wait (I don't understand the people who get in line not knowing what they signed up for and then complain the whole time), but it will be so worth it in the end!

Best food and fried chicken I ever had. They gave us enough food we had to give away most of it to homeless people. The whole thing costed $25.00. The most amazing restaurant for southern food I've ever visited them. If you go to Savannah and don't eat there. Shame on you

This place was awesome.

5/5 by 👻 @Joey F. on 03/06/2023

Everything was delicious. There was so much delicious food that no one could finish what we had in front of us. We also ate family style with 8 other strangers. It was a great experience. The fried chicken was some of the best I have ever had. My wife's two favorite things were the squash and creamed corn. She normally does not like these. I am glad we went. I am sorry we did not go earlier as we would have eaten here twice this week. It is well worth the 1.5 hour wait.

Food was good but not AMAZING.

5/5 by 👻 @Jen Z. on 03/04/2023

Reason why I still gave it 5 stars is because of the entire experience. It gave me feeling of warmth and comfort. As someone who is extremely antisocial/introvert, I thought I would hate sharing a table with strangers but I enjoyed it. I loved the candied yam, fried chicken, biscuits, mac n cheese, beef stew and iced sweet tea. Also loved the banana pudding. Some may find the sweet tea to be bland but there's a tray of sugar on the table, so feel free to add another 2 packs of sugar. NOTE: Party of 3 - arrived around 10:30AM before opening and had to wait another 30min after opening. *Make sure to get there before opening!!* BRING CASH!!! $30pp I will definitely stop by whenever I'm in Savannah again :)

An incredible meal and fabulous fried chicken! We got there early (10:30AM) and waited for them to open at 11. Everything was delicious! All the sides and even the iced tea was great. We ate with 6 others, 4 of whom had been there several times. Overall a wonderful meal! I was too busy to take any pictures of the beginning, sorry!

3/5 by 👻 @Steven K. on 02/27/2023

I definitely feel like the minority with this review but other then at ambiance and atmosphere I really wasn't super impressed with the food. I thought the concept was super unique and fun. I loved the family style component with all of the dishes just waiting for you at the table and being able to try a bunch of different sides. Waited in line for just a little under 2 hours and we got there at about 10:30am. The chicken was good but nothing to write home about. The far majority of the sides in my opinion were lacking seasoning and flavor. My favorite sides were the stuffing, sausage and rice, and coleslaw. The other sides were very mediocre. The sweet tea was delicious though. I think it's definitely a cool place to experience if you find yourself in Savannah but I probably wouldn't wait in line again.

Really wish I'd read the reviews more in depth before going

5/5 by 👻 @Lauren M. on 02/25/2023

Really wish I'd read the reviews more in depth before going so I knew we had to get in line early. Arrived around 11:45 and were SHOCKED to see a line down the block. We did end up waiting about an hour and 10 minutes, but took turns standing in line and going to shops within the 2 block area. One of the owners came out to talk to everyone a few times while we waited and offered free biscuits while telling the back story of the real Mrs. Wilkes. We met some great people in line and ended up at the same table with them. I thought I'd hate the family style dining with complete strangers but it wasn't bad at all. Once the food was on the table (immediately) everyone just passed bowls and plates and got to eating.

Food was good, but too many choices. Unfortunately, we did not happen to get congenial tablemates, but not the fault of the restaurant. Service was great and the managers were helpful. Would go again and hope for nicer people at our table.
