insanely expensive and very poor products
We visited on February 9th, dinner was very long and terrible! They fed us delicious bread and that’s it, the rest is simple village food and not worth that kind of money... We took the set for 225 euros - it turned out to be a serving of tiny portions of potatoes, then a piece of beetroot, a little cabbage and onion, just trash The portions are very small and you would have left hungry, but here we had to eat bread, which we didn’t spare ( They even brought a calorie bun with cream for dessert... The wine list is large, but the wine turned out to be a simple Beaujolais for 190 euros. Apparently, they don’t understand at all what delicious food and presentation are! Hell, it’s definitely not worth the money, sausages taste better outside!
Be the first to ReplyExpectations were high, and so was disappointment....
A lot promised, price/performance ratio completely unacceptable, own microcosm, drink prices not transparent We travel a lot around the world and have rarely experienced something like this. You're happy to spend a little more money on good food, but our visit there will definitely not be repeated. We went to eat fatty schnitzel, the quality was certainly not bad. A glass of wine with it, 0.1 for 21.00 euros (without mentioning the price...). They're probably speculating that you won't ask. The drinks menu with around 180 pages is a tome, the prices there are completely confusing. For drinks, the quantity on offer must be stated, that's what the law says... Luckily we pulled the emergency brake and ended up with 190.00 euros. Somehow a tip was expected, and when I asked what "soup with meaning" meant, I got the answer that the 1.19 per person was for homeless assistance. To be honest, I would have preferred to donate everything there..... And then on the subject of signage at the entrance. Excluding people just because they have a different opinion is no longer appropriate. I also don't want to indicate the political opinion of the owners at the entrance door, it's just disgusting to me. We'll be back in Spain soon, enjoying the uncomplicated hospitality, the good regional food and the much better wine. What a pity

Rarely post. Feel the need to do so. Average food. Poor service. Grossly overpriced. Will never recommend. Not to mention go back (obviously).
Be the first to ReplyAmazing food relaxed environment
While tricky to find, once we had found the restaurant we were greeted by our host who was amazing throughout. Very friendly and approachable and went well and beyond to find a wine to my partners taste. The restaurant is split into two seating areas one watching the chefs and one on a side table which is where we were. Each course was introduced with an explanation by the chef responsible for it and the fact they could do this so well in English was great. There were 8 food courses although a welcome drink and “parting gift” are also included on the menu. Each course was amazing and made from “local local” ingredients. The duck course and apple dessert were highlights but the smoked potato was also amazing. I left very full and happy. Compared to some Michelin star places everything here was more relaxed and approachable but the food remained amazing!
Be the first to ReplyHigh price, low performance
Apart from the duck as the main course, everything was vegetarian. No fish, no meat, but expensive. You don't have to have it.
Be the first to ReplyIt's a gag but it's not funny
Completely agree with Murphy10000. It's a joke. The food is very ordinary but it is presented to you as if it were exceptional. The wine list is extensive and the sommelier is not bad. But the prices are totally overrated for poor quality food and wines that are not worth the price. Michelin really needs to wake up and remove this star which is not deserved, far from it. There are so many good cooks who deserve it much more
Be the first to ReplyDisappointing
Ridiculous = Aufgeblasen This restaurant has good food but has not grasped the concept of the customer being king. The wine list is bizarre. Organised by a madman it has no reference or stock to the great wines of the world and some of the wines it stocks are frankly awful. The height of the bizarre absurdity of this place was the coffee ritual complete with pseudo science resulting in mediocre coffee. As a caffeine addict - well versed in the coffee rituals of all continents - this was insulting
Be the first to ReplyWhat a disaster
This is an easy review: everything was bad and disappointing. I would call it a total rip-off. And you feel they know it, feel proud about it and ridicule you if you try to address whatever topic that is bothering you. Food. 200€ set menu per person. A small cup of standard onion broth, bread and rance butter, 2 leaves of kale with mustard seeds, 2 spoons of cabbage with glue-like bechamel and meat stock, 2 slices of marinated cucumber, 1 tiny slice of white chicken with sticky stock, a small pot of mashed potatoes with cheese to finish. That was it. Sticky caramel with a slice of pear and uncooked streusel as desert. A total sham presented as low footprint modern cuisine. Drinks. You want pairing? They cannot tell you the price. It depends on what you will drink. Difficult to drink a lot. A glass corresponds to 11mm of fluid in your wine glass. That's all. Not enough fluid to surpass the ugly smell of washing machine soap in the glass. Only cheap wines (but original ones, that would be the only positive note). I guess all in all there was 30-40 cl per person all over the evening. Price tag? 185€ per head. Unannounced. The summit of disaster: the staff. Arrogant and uninterested. And I still do not know if they are incompetent. If yes, they are good at hiding it. Good Con artists at best. That summarises the entire program of the restaurant: show people that they are cash providers not guests, that they are being despised whatever money they will pay. This is the SM dungeon of pseudo gastronomy: beat me, make me suffer while asking me to pay a fortune. I am amazed to read that some people love to be treated like this. Thanks to Michelin and San Pelegrino for your misguidance.
Be the first to ReplyVery disappointing
Oh dear, where to start... Nice room, with a little over 20 covers all seated at a chef's table counter so you feel special already with your view straight into the kitchen. We were almost immediately told off for not reading the wine list in advance of our arrival and not knowing precisely which wines we wanted - who does that?? The wine list is an impenetrable thick tome with wines listed in a category system I could not fathom. Also there are no prices for wines by the glass - this is excused as a sort of 'it'll be 7 Euros or 40 Euros and we are happy to explain'. Here's a thing - why not just tell your clients the price? Also, what on earth value is there in listing wines which are 'not yet ready to drink'? Hilarious (not). Isn't the ethos on locally-sourced ingredients? Wines are from all over Europe - Spain, Italy etc.... It's a fixed menu so you get what you're given which is great but the results were patchy - some dishes (the shallot for instance) are outstanding, others less so. Bread + 3-year old butter was good. Dessert of Wheat beer and strawberries was absolutely divine. But the Bresse chicken dish with coriander seeds was a tiny portion, only just cooked and mediocre, not helped by the presentation staff advising that the taste was 'better than supermarket chicken' (sorry - at these prices, none of your diners are shopping at Lidl and you should know that). Service started well but the Head Chef went home before service was over, walking around with coat, hat and bag in an obvious show of departing - again, who does that? Does the Stage Manager leave the theatre before the curtain comes down? No they don't and as a result, service fell off a cliff. We sat with dirty plates, hoping our next course was on its way whilst staff either chatted or simply disappeared. Ambient music is vinyl - love that - and 80's albums - again love that and I sang along to Kate Bush, but the Communards (80s disco) at full volume?! Not for us. The fixed menu was 175Euro each and the biggest shock was learning that some of the wine we'd had by the glass was 27,50 Euro per glass. We have eaten in Michelin starred restaurants around the world - including our local at home which is 5mins walk from the house - but I've never seen such prices. As we left, we were handed our 'final course' - a palate-destroying sugar-coated freshly-made Berliner (jam doughnut) which we were entreated to eat on the way home but no serviette to help with the mess as 'we've run out'. Honestly you couldn't make it up. This was supposed to be a special meal for us on our last night in Berlin but we left angry and disappointed, not about the ludicrous price but the careless and pretentious attitude and the lack of professionalism.
Be the first to ReplyOver-rated, over-priced and overall bad experience
Ate at this place with some friends. Food is interesting but not exciting, and one wonders how the Michelin star was acquired. Quite pricey for the 90% vegetarian meal. Service was good at the start, but not consistent throughout and was abrupt. The policy of no photos could have been reinforced nicely. Instead, the manager was very rude about it and the pompous and racially-biased sommelier-owner talked down to us, citing our lack of understanding of German culture as the reason for our displeasure. Had dined in other Michelin-star restaurants which prioritise the diner experience genuinely. This place lacks the finesse for this, and instead comes across as a pretentious set-up. This was not only our worst Michelin meal, it was also our worst experience in Germany. Would not recommend this place to anyone.
Be the first to ReplyMassively disapointing.....
Have eaten at the restaurant on three earlier occasions; had been really impressed and rated it highly as a result. This time not so much. Previously the concept of extremely local sourcing of product was genuinely novel and the dishes l remember and reviewed were full of flavour and complexity. This visit we felt there was a real lack of technical input into many of the dishes and it's just no longer enough to coast along on the novelty value. That being said, the tomato broth starter was perfect, as was the house bread and butter. The shallot dish was also extremely well handled. This appears to be a go to dish at the moment Both Gagnaire and Arpege did a version of this recently and to its credit the N&S version compares favorably. However, the spaghetti squash was a little underdone, losing most of the stringiness the dish relies on. Further the Hollandaise accompaniment was flat and bland adding little except some liquid contrast. The black kale dish lacked any of the advertised caraway seed impact though the soft cheese component helped....a boring, lazy dish though. The following duck with spicy plum sauce dish was also below par. The duck was well cooked and a great product, but the spicy plum sauce a misnomer....flat and bland again. Also a problem with portion sizing as my wife received half as much again of the sauce that my plate exhibited. Presentation also an issue...irregular chunks of duck whacked on the plate next to a spoonful of sauce is just not good enough. The liver spatzle a lovely idea, but was one dimensional and forgettable. Pear dessert was very good while both the black current and mint and the babka were exemplary. The former exhibited an astonishing depth of flavour and was the highlight of the meal. Massive wine list but, and this is from someone that's had to deal with monster tomes regularly, it proved impossible to navigate and verged on being totally unusable. Idiosyncratic structuring of the list under imprecise categories made locating wines really difficult...took me a good five minutes just to find where the burgundies were hiding. Not just me....watched diners all around me take a look and give up,either defaulting to the pairing option or letting the sommelier choose. Neither option a disaster, but makes a mockery of such a list and, if one wanted to be cynical, allows the house to curate to their advantage. Would of course help if the list was posted on line so those with a serious interest could spend some time prior to arrival....many high end restaurants do just that. Service is fine if a little frenetic and the price asked would be more than fair if the delivery was up to scratch. In conclusion and especially if you present a predominantly vegetable based menu (only one protein on the night), more needs to be done and you really need to nail it. As indicated, an unexpected disappointment.
Be the first to ReplyMore show than substance
Three hours on hard, uncomfortable chairs, ten courses - and not feeling stuffed afterwards. First "course" was warm infused water, nice flavour, but a course?
For a star and 120€++ I personally expected more.
The food had interesting flavour combinations, the presentation was spotless, staff was friendly, the head honcho was loud.
They try to sell you add-on foods and drinks, additionally to the menue; the price you find out afterwards.
All in all, more show than substance.
A must do for fellow foodies - amazing food and wine pairings!
Wonderful meal and experience. This was a highlight of our vist to Berlin. The food and the staff were wonderful. I highly recommend for all fellow foodies!

A Michelin ! Placed 43 in the WORLD, and still deserves it! A must to visit. As always in Berlin you have to explore the entrance, just a few steps away from the known checkpoint Charlie, at the Friedrichstrasse, a not really inviting place, waits for you, to transport you to a world a simplicity but very studied form of high level performance and cuisine. A set menu, describes with very basic words like “Kollerabie”, “Haffer” , “Sellerie” , “Deer”, “Milk”, “Appel” and many others items what will be served. What rises the attention is the manner and dedication that every dish is prepared, set and decorated, but mind blowing is the parish to every dish. With either an excellent and selective wine or the absolute Non-Alcoholic drinks and preparation of drinks that perfectly feet with the dish served.
Wordless, and surprised, but it’s in fact the place to visit and enjoy. Definitively a place to go… but reserve in advance.
A must-do for folks into food and dining
Nobelhart & Schmutzig has received a lot of coverage in the media (certainly the British media) for its distinctive offering as well as its early role in the growing local food movement. Like all restaurants which had been established for a while, I wondered whether I'd be visiting what had become an institution rather than sharing the venture it started out as.
Absolutely not! Nobelhart & Schmutzig is an event, an education and a wonderfully fun night out. If you're in Berlin and are remotely interested in food and dining, it should be at the top of your list to do.
Adapting seasonal local produce to highlight otherwise humble ingredients to produce a predominately plant based menu, a lot of theatre in the delivery, some cleverness (almond extract out of cherry stones - WTF?) and some really varied drinks parings kept us laughing and talking throughout the night and boring folks with the story long after it.
A lot of the satisfaction came from the unknown and getting the hang of Nobelhart & Schmutzig's very distinctive format but, you know what? I'd have gone back later in the week...simply because the night was fun and enjoyable.
The final mention was regarding my girlfriend's gluten and dairy intolerance. They accommodated her with no problems through a multi-course tasting menu, which was frankly amazing given the region's historic focus on things like bread and butter. Very skilful indeed and very much appreciated.
Overall, a wonderful night out and if you're into your food and dining, a global bucket list entry.
