I had heard of this restaurant in other locations in the US. When Nobu came to Houston, I had avoided going because of the reputation of rather steep pricing. I’m not opposed to spending extravagantly on a dining experience. I’ve been known to spend stupid money in restaurants like Le Taillevent, Daniel, Enoteca Pinchiorri, Le Comptoir Robuchon, etc. However, although the post-covid world has left the whole restaurant industry reeling and inflation has skyrocketed the price of seafood, Nobu set a new bar for overpricing their dining experience. Their staff was extremely knowledgeable about the Menu du jour, but very mechanical in their presentation. We had a 7-top and chose the Feed-Me option and was served family style. The only alcohol we consumed were two bottles of Sake. We were served 8 courses consisting of very, very thin slices of wonderful fish, mollusk, crustaceans and wagu beef accompanied by outstanding sauces and marinades. The presentation on the plates were worthy of a Michelin Star. The staff’s level of training and enthusiasm was not. In my opinion (especially when hosting a dinner), $282.00 per head for ultra small, artistic portions is not a good value unless it is supported by a stellar performance by the staff. I gave this restaurant 4 stars on the quality of food and the kitchen’s imagination. This was as advertised in any word of mouth promotion that I’ve heard. Unfortunately, so was the reputation for being overpriced.
