With so many good food places in the neighborhood, I expected better from Obba BBQ. What I should have done was checking Yelp first and not be bamboozled by the high Google reviews (1300+ with 4.5 rating) because food here was absolute mid. Quality of the meat was just okay and the banchan was average at best. Felt like we should have just ate at a hawker center for a more satisfying experience. Also it wasn't exactly cheap - if you go with a combo and a drink, expect to pay about $100+ with the meal after service and tax. Service was attentive and decent but not going to make up for the food experience.
Be the first to ReplyI always saw long lines when walking past O.
BBa's three stores along Tanjong Pagar Rd, so I put this on my to-go list. The wait was reasonable, ~30 min, although it was exacerbated by the hot and humid weather & constant stream of pedestrians navigating the crowd. We got set C (marinated beef, sliced pork belly, marinated pork rib, side dishes) + soju. The food was very filling for three people, but it seemed like the set menus skimped on the amount of meat, and the meat did not taste very marinated. Service was fine, and the free melona popsicle at the end was a nice touch.
Be the first to ReplyGot takeaway and they packaged the banchan for us too.
Steamed egg with flying fish roe - 3.5 starsGood! Tasted rich, like they add butter maybe.Bulgogi - 3 starsThe meat came with lots of sweet potato noodles, which were delicious but were too salty and too sweet so it was hard to eat much. The meat was a bit overseasoned (too sweet) as well.Seafood pancake - 3.5 starsCame with quite a lot of seafood. Pretty standard. BanchanHard boiled eggSausage - 2 stars, my least favoriteKimchi - 3.5 starsEgg roll - 3 starsGreen beans with shrimp - 3.5 starsMashed potato

- first thing: there is added sugar almost everywhere, to almost disturbing levels: in the marinade, in the ssamjang sauce, in the kimchi (!) And all the other banchan (side dishes). I could not eat the ssamjang sauce because it was too sweet.- banchan: for korean food connoisseurs, the real richness in korean cuisine resides in the side dishes (banchan). They came in a good variety, but were all too sugary. Even the kimchi.- I liked that they gave us the 'puchu' which is the leak with kochukalu and sesame oil. Lot of places in Singapore do not provide this and for me this one item is the taste of korean bbq.- the meat was perfectly grilled by our waiter(s), as the restaurant uses charcoal bbq. Meat quality is good, even though from the US (and we all know how beef is raised in the US).- the daenjang jjigae was very good in my opinion, rich and full of flavours.- the staff was dedicated, efficient and friendly - very positive experience with them.- ambiance and vibe is good, there is kpop streaming, noise level is a bit loud but ok (this is during covid time)- ventilation and air extractors working very well; we did not smell too much bbq after that.Total bill for 2: 95sgd. In line with expectations.3 stars: even though an overall ok experience, the amount of added sugar in all the dishes ruined the entire thing. Would be 5 stars without the sugar.
Be the first to ReplyWait WHAT?! How does this place only have 2.
5 stars? I guess some of the bad reviews are from a few years ago. They must be COMPLETELY DIFFERENT NOW because this place is one of the superb fun places I've been to anywhere. My wife and I were at a bar enjoying a drink for her birthday a few months ago and we got hungry. We asked the waitress at the bar we were at if she knew of any good Korean BBQ places and she told us about this place. In fact, she sold us on it so well that maybe she should be writing this instead of me?! Who knows. We went. And OH BOY!This place reminded being at Cold Stones Creamery. That's how much fun it was to eat here. Everyone yells at you when you come in (in a nice way!) and when you order stuff they yell at each other and the like. It's really a lot of fun. They also take your photo and put it up on the wall when you eat there. It's just a legit super fun environment to be in. Which is why i found it so strange that people were complaining about the service. Oh and the food. My god! We got whatever the $100 set up was. We were hungry, but you'd be surprised at how much food you can get at a Korean BBQ place for $100. Actually maybe you wouldn't be surprised, because you can probably read, and the amount of food is actually in the menu! That being said, this place gives you legit large portions. And I'm not even talking about all the delicious meat (of which there is a lot) I'm talking about sides dishes and such, which were all really good, but also very filling. We ALMOST didn't have enough room to finish our pounds of meat, but because we're pros at this eating game we took it all down! I would TOTALLY go back to the place, and absolutely recommend it to anyone visiting Singapore. So good!
Be the first to ReplyI was actually surprised by the portion size for the galbi
I was actually surprised by the portion size for the galbi here. Since I was thinking that portion was going to be smaller, I actually ordered 2 orders of non marinated galbi, plus a soup. Then this huge platter of meat arrived at the table and I was in fat kid heaven. The quality of the short rib was decent. It was fresh and fairly tender with a nice buttery flavor. I have had better and worse elsewhere. I think the butchering could use a little more work though. The butterfly cut on the meat had uneven thickness pretty much all over...It's unfortunate that they cannot substitute non marinated galbi instead of the marinated version, even though the pricing is exactly the same. Side dishes were honestly all meh... The Yukgaejang was quite disappointing. The meat wasn't shredded but was chunked instead. It had spice, but was really missing that deep beefy flavor along with the taste and texture of good bracken.Service was stretched really thin for some reason. They didn't even help cook the meat for me, which is what I generally expect at most KBBQ joints. I saw the two servers running all over, and they barely had time to really check on the table or clean up tables to turn them around. Perhaps another pair of hands would provide useful.
Be the first to ReplyI have no complaints about my experience at Obba.
The barbecue is pretty much on par with what I'm used to back home. The meat is good quality and the service was good. The waiters came to cook our meat and checked on it frequently so it wouldn't burn. Also we asked for more garlic and it came right away! As garlic addicts, me and my friends were extremely pleased with how quick the service was. The price was good for three people in my opinion since I'm used to paying a lot more for the same amount of food at KBBQ back home.
Be the first to ReplyAwful service.
Quality of the food subpar. You don't get what you pay for. I won't be returning to this restaurant.
Be the first to ReplyI like coming here! You have places that have shitty BBQ
I like coming here! You have places that have shitty BBQ but good soup, and you have places that have shitty soup but good BBQ. This place has both! Umm, that would be good soup and good BBQ (in case you're wondering)! The meat is good and the soup is even better! Panchans are quite tasty as well. Price-wise comparable to the region. We usually get Set C when we're here which is about $80 total, and enough to feed 2-3 pax.
Be the first to ReplyFood - ok, but not exceptional.
Service - attentive, Ambience - cosyThe failure point in my experience is also shared by others here -- they wont refill some of the side dishes, and lied about it ("sold out" -- come on, bean sprouts sold out when we were among the first ones there (At 645pm for dinner?). Other later diners were served the side dishes we asked for (but i suspect only one round of dishes). If i am wrong about Korean dining etiquette in this manner, pls correct me. My korean friends tell me what they did is not right. With no exceptional food, a diner has to decide if this matter matters.Paid $100 for two - beef platter. Rice costs $2 per bowl
