Highly touted Ohshima is on Tustin, just North of Taft in Orange.
We ordered the omakase (8 pieces inc seabream, cherry salmon, hotate, amberjack, seabass, bonito, black cod & big yellowtail belly). We also added uni, unagi and beef cheeks off the daily special. To wash it all down we had Rokkasen sake (a light, dry sake) and Asahi.
First of all, almost all the fish in the omakase was very fresh and expertly cut. Its what you would expect from this highly touted place. However, there was no creativity with the dishes. Most places offer a couple of items to showcase the sushi chef's artistic abilities. Lastly, the uni was rotten, and the unagi & beef cheeks were pretty pedestrian: 4 Stars.
Regarding the ambiance, its a small place with about 12 seats at the sushi bar. Getting a res is very difficult, so we opted to come @ 5:30 when it opened (I arrived early and was first in line for non-reservation customers). Nonetheless, we were seated right in front of our chef, who was nice, but didn't have much personality: 4 Stars.
I liked the service, esp when I had a party foul and broke my beer glass - LOL. However, my friend felt it was a little cold. Nonetheless, they comped my bday dessert: 4 Stars.
All in all, a very good experience. However, Ohshima has been touted as the best sushi in OC. I can think of at least two places I would prefer over Ohshima IMHO.
