Opheem Birmingham Reviews from The Last Year
Top class in every way
Stunning evening - top class service / amazing food ! 2 stars well deserved , having visited a few times previously we could tell how it has grown ! Fab way to spend an evening ! Great to see Aktar leading the Team -who were excellent
Underwhelming
This would have been our 4th time, 1st since the second star. How underwhelming. Food was great but the service… I think the Michelin inspectors did not go on a Saturday afternoon. Main came out before starters and had to asked for drinks menu and more drinks over and over. We were not on a wine flight so this was just lost revenue for them. Having to ask twice for things we ordered… including the bill. This is NOT 2 star service. Just totally disappointed by the experience
Second time Second star!
Second time at Opheem for the 10 course tasting menu. Absolutely amazing experience. Food even better than first time, service spot on. Lovely people amazing food.
A Taste Explosion
This was a birthday treat. 10 course taster menu at this wonderful restaurant. Every mouthful a taste sensation. The service was outstanding from the warm welcome and snacks (5) in the lounge and then throughout. Each course delivered and explained by one of the army of chefs and supplemented by the wine pairing, numerous wines that we would not normally have had. Finally back to the lounge for petit fours and a drink to finish. Lived up to our expectations…fantastic.
An extraordinary experience
Just the most incredible dining experience from start to finish. I could write page after page about every single course but I'll try and keep it brief. Straight from the off I really enjoyed the relaxed, informal vibe of the place. I think there is a perception sometimes that high end dining can be a stuffy, slightly snobby affair but I did not get a whiff of that here. The service was friendly and attentive without being overbearing and it all felt very unrushed. A special mention to the mango tuille canape - the very definition of a flavour explosion. The main meal was truly special. The bread with curried butter, the delicious crab starter, the super refreshing sheep's milk yoghurt dessert. This is spectacular cooking. However my main mention is for the cod main. Good grief. I sometimes roll my eyes when watching a show like Masterchef or Great British Menu and how they talk about fish not being right because it's under/overcooked by a few seconds either way - can it really make THAT much of a difference? I get it now. I totally get it now. With my first bite of this cod I realised that up until this point in my life I had never truly eaten good fish before. An absolutely world class piece of cooking and that sauce - heavenly. The greatest meal of my life.
Simply the best!
we were warmly greeted and taken to a beautifully decorated contemporary lounge area. We had pre-dinner cocktails and the most beautiful hors d’oeuvres. We were then taken to the dining room and we chose the 10 course tasting menu with the wine pairing. Every course was beautifully presented, and tasted sensational. I have been very lucky to be able to enjoy many fabulous restaurants, but I can honestly say this is the best place I have ever visited. Opheem is now my number one in my top 3 restaurants of all time! The whole evening from start to finish was so special. A fabulous evening and can’t wait to return. Thank you to the team
Outstanding.
This was gastronomic brilliance. A truly stunning experience where we enjoyed every moment of the ten course tasting menu.
Beautiful food and place
A place to visit for a special occasion well worth the money . You get way more than 10 course taster. Very relaxed atmosphere
What an experience.
What an amazing time we had from start to finish . The service was impeccable and the food was amazing. I will definitely be returning and it’s well worth the money . The 10 course experience was one of the best I’ve had .
OhhhPheem: 6EQUJ5 - can you guess the nerdy reference?
Well, what can I say? We have been fans of Aktar's cooking from his early days at Lasan & have been around 4 or 5 times since opening. Each time, I have been more impressed than the last, it's been our favourite restaurant ever since. Well last night, we returned for our 10 year anniversary and can say that this time it blew any idea of local competition, so far out of the water that I think they're still in orbit The first thing we noticed on arrival, was that the entrance has been separated from was the bar. The bar area is now a separate informal dining area, and where you are seated for the start of your culinary experience. Expecting a couple of Amuse Bouche, we were left stunned as they just kept coming. First out was a palate cleanser which was sweet, tart, with a hint of chilli (??) but enjoyable (I will admit my wife didn't enjoy this, so I finished hers!!), along with a sesame seed ring which looks a lot like the one you used to start with but different texture and flavours. I'll admit we both much preferred the original one as this one felt dry and crumbly, which it hadn't previously. That the was the lowest point of the night & I'm in no way saying there was anything unpleasant. We ordered some drinks expecting to go through to the main restaurant, but then the next small bites came, then the next. This continued for 5 separate mini courses, some with 2 items each on the same board. Stunning crispbread & tuiles topped with different gels and herbs. The tuile with the vinegar gel was stunning. There was a duck liver parfait - I'm not a fan of liver in any form, but this was beautiful. My favourite was the puffed rice in the spiced broth. There was so much going on and so many courses that it's hard to remember the individuals of each dish, but I could have sat with a whole painful of this and finished the lot We then moved to the dining room for the first of the 10 courses. There was a spiced BBQ corn (only gripe coming from the wife (yes her again, sorry!! Hehe), that as it comes without cutlery, it could potentially be messy, as she attested with a kernel down her top!!!. This was served alongside a corn ice cream cone. I wasn't expecting this, but was pleasantly surprised how it all came together. What followed was a wealth of veggie and fish dishes (barring a mutton dish), each explained professionally by the staff, along with advice on how they would 'tackle' them. I will admit, prior to coming, I was worried about the lack of meat dishes in place of veggie, but honestly, it couldn't have been nicer. There was a barbecued asparagus and pea dish accompanied by a korma sauce (we still never got an answer to how you manage to barbecue a pea??), scallops with apple balls & moolie, followed by a dish described as Achari pink fir potato w/tamarind. This didn't excite me at all, I expected something a little bland with tamarind being the dominant driver. However I was pleasantly surprised and this was actually one of my favourite dishes. As you break through the layers and bring the different elements together, it takes on a different flavour profile, well balanced and surprising bigger than expected from a tasting menu Next up was my wife's favourite dish, delicately cooked plaice, wrapped in fine shavings of baby courgettes, topped with tiny shrimp, amongst curry leaves (??) accompanied by a light but flavoursome fish bhuna sauce. After this, came the 'lentil porridge', but it's so much more - crisp but light mini loaves to use to mop up your porridge, which was topped with herbs and nasturtiums. It also came with what looked like a pouring sauce, but we were advised to sip it between bites of the rest. It was amazing, punchy & flavoursome. You could taste the toasted spices coming through. The final main dish before moving onto the sweet courses was a mutton dish with kale and sorrel. We were told this is a favourite for many who visit - it wasn't my number 1 but that is because all the dishes compete so well with each other Moving onto desserts, we were first given another palate cleanser (which I can't remember now for the life of me) followed by 2 courses. We were told the final course would be served in the pre-dining area. Both were delicious, the apple samosa dish was potentially my favourite. I can say that the browned butter ice cream was one of the nicest new foodie experiences of my life. So much so that we had to be a little cheeky and ask if we could have a little more. Being the great team that they are, they brought us the ice cream as a separate dish, sitting on a crumb, with 2 different gels and topped with...actually I can't remember now, so I'll have to go with the attached picture and say, meringue or white chocolate (??) or was it coconut? We had a discussion if it would be going too far to ask for some more, even a recipe for home, but we didn't. I'd love to try to recreate this, it was a clever use of ingredients to balance out the flavours. My wife was also brought a complimentary drink during these courses. It was very very VERY lightly carbonated dessert wine, low alcohol, it tasted like a Perry. Definitely something we will search for, for home. For the final 'course', we were taken back to the old bar area. I write this hyphenated because again, it was split over 3 separate courses. First up, a mango ice lolly, dipped in white chocolate (stunning). We finished with a selection of sweet treats (3 in total). There was a fruity, Turkish delight-esque cub, a chocolate shell with a smooth creamy filling and another little cube, this one a soft caramel/toffee bite. All round I cannot fault the dining experience. To call this a 10 course tasting menu is almost underselling it, but I guess the surprise is the appeal. All the staff were attentive, drinks topped up before you finished, new linen napkins replacing your old one if you ever left the table for a rest break. The Maitre D was such a lovely person, I hope he gets the recognition he deserves. We didn't get his name, but he made so much effort to assist in our dining experience, happy to share a few jokes and laughs, definitely made everything more complete (not like it wasn't complete on food and drinks alone) I was hoping for Aktar to visit our table as he did a few others around us. It would have been nice even if just to thank him for what he has created. Opheem was Birmingham's most recent Michelin Star, I know others will soon join it, but in my opinion this could easily go down as our first 2 star restaurant in the city. We have tried many of the city's top restaurants & can safely say that if you have tried and enjoyed the others, you will be more than surprised by Opheem. A fantastic owner who still acts as Executive Chef, a great team of chefs around him, knowledgeable and attentive waiting staff. As a team they have the whole hospitality experience nailed down, there is nothing really to critique...ok, maybe bring back the sesame rings of old - but that's me trying to find fault where there really is none Thank you for another memorable evening, it's been a few years since the previous as we have moved out of Birmingham, but we will no doubt find reason to return for a special occasion My advice, as it has always been: Do not go out, even semi-regularly to average to good restaurants. Pool that money if you must & have the dining experience of a lifetime. You may only get the opportunity once, you may end up a regular, but you can at least say that you have had that experience. I can promise you, you would be in a significant tiny percentage if you do not find the experience something special See you again some time
