good food but
The restaurant is very stylish and comfortable. We had the Chef's menu. The course I is good, love every dishes. SZECHUAN BRAISED LAMB SHOULDER in Course II has much more curry than Szechuan spicy, the name is misleading. The cabbage is surprisingly good, looks pretty and delicious. Course III is about curry.
Unfortunately, I am not a fan of curry, I feel too much curry.
Fun, relaxed, delicious
Wonderful. Delicious small plates for sharing. Great service. Nice decor. Fun time. Everything about it was precise but still relaxed and not pretentious.
Be the first to ReplyGreat food even better service
I was looking for a restaurant close to my hotel and happened to find Proxi. Initially I was cautious on the menu as I saw more spicy offerings with curry. I took a chance and am glad I did. The food was outside what I would normally order. The tempura elites were spot on. Hot and delicious. I ordered the black cod for my meal and found it not to hot and perfectly cooked.
But what really makes this place shine was the service. If an employee walked by my table and saw an empty plate or glass they asked if the could take or refill it. Great teamwork in action
Excellent meal; Excellent service. Attention to Covid protocols
I was in Chicago for a business trip, and was hesitant about dining in a restaurant. I took out food two nights in a row from Chipotle. The 3rd night I was here, I just did not want another fast food Mexican dinner (as much as I love Chipotle!)
Proxi is located around the corner from the hotel where I am staying, so I ventured in and was able to get a seat outside on the sidewalk. (There are no inside dining options right now.) I was leery about the Covid cleanliness, but I needn't have worried. They took my temperature before seating me; there were no menus - everything is electronic... looked at the menu on my phone. The waitstaff were all wearing masks, and the interaction was minimal. They took my order, brought my food, and allowed me the space to eat.
As for the meal, I ordered the burrata (delicious); had the scallops (2 perfectly seared scallops with some spciy chili sauce) and ordered the wagyu beef short ribs (what a taste treat that was!). The dishes at Proxi are on the small side, so if you go with a large group (and I think at the present time they are limiting the amount of people who can sit at one table), you can order many dishes and sample everything that is on the menu. There aren't all that many menu choices, but certainly enough to satisfy any diner.
I tried a Vietnamese coffee ice cream desert which was nothing special, but it was a sweet ending to my meal.
The only negative I have is the pour for the glass of wine was small.
All in all, it was not an inexpensive meal, and I typically avoid dining alone and spending $100 on dinner, but this was certainly worth the price. It says on the menu that they limit the dining experience to 2 hours (right now), so this is not a night-long dining extravaganza. I can certainly see how you could linger here for hours, though.
Funky Place
I love the layout and decor of this restaurant. It has a funky vibe to it which matches the creative food coming out of the kitchen. The highlight for me were the Mung Bean dumplings. I even ate them for dessert. We had six plates and 5 of the plates were outstanding. The other was ok, not bad, but not nearly as good as the others. The menu traverses the globe which is not an easy thing to do and execute well, but this restaurant does. We had a very nice evening.
Be the first to ReplyHow can a meal be so bad?
We ate here on November 2 and had one of the most miserable dining experiences in recent memory. Figuring it was the progeny of nearby Sepia (where we have enjoyed many excellent meals) and a current addition to Eater 38 Chicago, it seemed a no-brainer choice for a special dinner with out of town friends and family, all of whom are foodies, including a former restaurant manager. We were sadly mistaken.
From the awkward mistart in the reservations process (initially told nothing was available, then told later that something was available, giving us the wrong reservation phone number for the restaurant and an inability to provide an email confirmation for the booking) it only went down-hill after that.
First off, the menu is a bizarre, seemingly random hodge-podge of "small plates" from cuisines with little coherent relationships or taste profiles. It felt like the chef cruised the "international aisle" at the local grocery store for inspiration and menu planning. More annoyingly, almost every "small plate" is NOT meant for sharing which smacks of shameless check padding. The server advised we had to order multiples of practically each item so that everyone at our table could get a taste.
Second, many of the dishes were not well prepared and several close to inedible. This was not a soft or recent opening - the place has been open for 2 years and has a great pedigree but it was clearly the D- team in the kitchen. The hummus was "meh," octopus substandard (chewy and incinerated), the pork shank tough and sinewy with a questionable odor (it seemed well past its prime, stale as if reheated or previously frozen), the whole deboned fish full of bones, and the sad lamb kabob dry and cardboard-like.
Third, we can't imagine how the server has managed to hold unto to his job...he flubbed every aspect of the meal from a messed up drink order, failure to timely provide a GF option for the hummus (lettuce leaves that came out 10 minutes after the dish arrived), not clearing plates between the larger proteins (our fish sat and got cool for over 5 minutes while we waited for fresh plates and new set ups) and completely forgetting the potato dish that he insisted we defer to have with the larger protein...and when it came it was so salty as to be inedible.
Lastly, the interface with management was less than optimal and not customer-oriented. After the server disappeared again (he was MIA most of the evening), we asked for the GM and instead got the cowering wine manager who stopped by and then promptly scurried off, hiding behind the service station. When Elmer Stunkel (the GM) finally appeared, he asked if he could "make it up to us" - we said we were not interested in dessert nor more courses and were ready to leave. He said he'd review the bill and came back with some selective bill reductions. In our view, he should have written off the bill and invited us to return another night and try it again...sadly they won't get a second chance with us.
There are many excellent places in the West Loop and no compelling reason to eat at Proxi. Give this a pass...it is the Emperor's New Clothes of trendy dining.
Nice Dinner!
We had 4 people in our party and loved sharing all of the small plates here. We shared 8 small plates for dinner and 2 for desert and loved everything we ate! We all got cocktails which were delicious as well. We can't wait to return!
Be the first to ReplyNothing special, food or service
My best friend and her husband who are naive Chicagoans have raved over this place. We joined them for dinner last night (on a Thursday). Our reservations were for 8PM and they told us that the people at the table were paying and we would be seated shortly. The restaurant was not crowded and there were many empty tables.
We went to the bar and had a drink. I had the take on the old fashioned and it was well balanced. The highlight was actually Keep it spicy which is a non alcoholic drink. The spice of the ginger is magical. We ended up waiting 20 minutes for our table.
We finally got to the table and started to look at the menu. Our friends gave us some recommendations, but our waiter did not say anything. He did not offer suggestions or tell us how large or small the portions were. For starters we had the cauliflower Indian special, the burrata, and the elote. These dishes were the highlight of the meal. The cauliflower was super crispy and the sauce was so rich and flavorful with a hint of spice. The elote was crispy with a creamy corn flavor in the middle. The burrata was creamy and I liked the addition of the squash. It needed acid to cut the fat. The bread was perfectly grilled and seasoned.
We ended up ordering more drinks after the first courses and we waited around 15 minutes to get them. Our waiter never refilled our water glasses.
For the rest of the meal, we had the mussels and coal oysters. The mussels were great. The broth was bold and flavorful and I like the addition of the saltines of the sausage. The oysters should not happen. They were torched, but had no flavor. The oysters were cooked and were very one note. It ended up being a weird texture.
We also had the lamb chops, which were cooked perfectly. The raita could have been seasoned more. The pork shank fell off the bone, but the sauce was too sweet. It had a great heat, but finished sweet. We could have done away with the pork. We had no idea how large the portions were and it ended up being a lot of food for us and our friends ordered more.
There were some dishes that were more successful than others. For the price of the meal, the service did not match it. I wouldnโt come back again because nothing really popped, the food or the service.
Great Meal
We dined here with friends in December 2019. What a great experience!
We started with a cocktail at the bar; the bartender was super-friendly and gave great advice. The drinks were all delicious; the bar staff has created some fun drinks.
We then took our seats in the dining room, which is a great space with slightly industrial feel. Our servers were relaxed and helpful. We shared several plates and were really impressed by the totality of the meal. Standout dishes included the mung bean dumplings, the mushroom and yuba noodles, and the crispy rice cakes. The wine list also had some cool options, and we enjoyed our selection.
Really fun evening and delicious food that makes me excited to return.
