This was the second time I visited.
The first time I went they had a special Korean themed menu because there were guest bar tenders from Korea visiting. This time around there was a menu inspired by Japan. I took my friend for their 21st birthday and they really enjoyed it. The interior of the space, and even the bathrooms, had really neat decor. They even gave us a free Thai tea dessert "clouds over Thailand" because we were celebrating a birthday.

Favorite speakeasy in San Diego! Pro tip: bring a couple friends so you can all order different drinks and sip-sip-pass to try the wide array of deliciousness they have to offer. Another plus: they offer food options. Absolutely love this place! 10/10 recommend.

Had the best time with my two sons trying the amazing drinks that were offered. We were lucky to get in one late Tuesday evening after putting our names on the wait list while at the Common Theory bar. Walking through the apothecary room was interesting....didn't know what to expect next. Then we walked into the actual speakeasy, and wow, were amidst a beautifully decorated tropical/jungle lounge with an inviting bar surrounded by booths and tables. We ordered the Lalisa, Shinigami Apple, Mitarashi Cafe and Black Ichijiku. All were delicious with their own little distinctive twists. The servers were attentive and friendly and the bartender spent some time giving us some the history and information about upcoming events. And then, on our way out, we received these tasty, chewy Miso butter cookies that I've been trying to replicate to no avail since then. Guess I'll just have to go back

Not our first time to RO52R, but every time we visit this place, it's an experience! We were taken cared of by their Lead Bartender "Brian", and boy does he know his craft! We've followed Brian over the years at his many stops throughout his career tending bar, and he's definitely one of the best! Thankfully, we came at a time when before the crowd filled the speakeasy. We tried five drinks, several of their signature creations, and several off-menu creations made on the fly. Sampled two appetizers to help offset the alcohol, and both were outstanding. RO52R's ambiance is one of the coolest speakeasies in town. For first timers, it'll blow you away. We absolutely love, love, love coming here! For those who are avid speakeasy enthusiasts, so you've tried the rest, if you want the BEST, this is THE spot! Food, drinks, service, atmosphere, music, and overall experience... It's hard to beat!

Found the time limit policy to be odd considering we were seated after our reservation time and had to wait an hour for our entrees. FYI, the timer does not start when you're seated, it starts at the time you made your reservation for. When they came to let us know we had 30 minutes left, we mentioned how we had been waiting on them all night and they explained that steak takes a long time to cook. I'm not saying that isn't true, but the steak is not a thick cut and we asked for it "medium", not "well done". Also, why not disclose that when people are ordering? A heads up would be nice. It's stressful to know you're under a time constraint when you have zero control of the situation because it's not up to you when the food comes out, only how fast you can eat it once it does come out. We were there to celebrate a special occasion and not once was it acknowledged, which I will give them the benefit of the doubt and say perhaps it wasn't their fault and maybe it's just the way the reservations come through. It just seemed unusual because it's always been acknowledged everywhere else where I've been asked when making the reservation if it is for a special occasion. I also didn't understand the "family style" term used throughout the menu and that the server also referred to. None of these dishes are large enough to be shared or considered "family style", besides maybe the tempura veggies, which are listed as a side, but are more of an appetizer. To enter the restaurant, you are first brought into a room where they tell you a little bit about the place, but because the entrance is also the exit, while we were in there, a group was exiting and they were talking loudly and laughing, so we missed what the hostess said. Not a big deal and I know a lot of places use the same entrance as an exit, but because the hidden entrance is usually a big part of a speakeasies' appeal, you would think they would try to streamline this process to avoid having all sorts of guests in one room at the same time. The food and drinks are good, but overall, for the price point, there is a lot left to be desired. I know to a lot of people spending $500 on a dinner for 4 isn't a lot, so if you have that type of disposable income and don't mind feeling rushed, you will probably enjoy yourself. But for those of us who reserve an outing like this only for special occasions, I recommend you save your hard-earned money for a place that is worth it and here in San Diego they aren't hard to find.
Be the first to ReplyThe Realm of the 52 Remedies is nothing short of phenomenal.
The highlight of my four day trip in San Diego. It actually took me and my friends a minute to find. No signs. GPS confused us for a second. Some legitimate speakeasy vibes for you. All I see is a normie sports bar. So we walked around the plaza for a second before I summed up the courage to curb my social anxiety and walk into the sports bar to ask, and there it was in all of its glory: the glowing white door of the Realm of the 52 Remedies. psa: your reservation deposit is actually a deposit which is quickly refunded. After a short wait, we were welcomed into a room. And what an experience that was. We were told a fun story about the birth of this speakeasy and how it developed its awesome vibe with inspiration from Chinese and Japanese culture and medicine. I won't say much more to avoid spoiling the fun. The interior design is on point. It just feels good to sit here to have a drink with your buddies. The bar played was soft, slow modern rnb. Not too on the nose with the Asian theme haha. The service is incredible. Our server gave brief, apt descriptions of the drinks we ordered. Even the bathrooms are epic. I ordered their ever popular Saigon Dreamer. Complex in flavor, nutty, sweet, silky and elegant. My friends had Lalisa, Earl Grey, Kikufuku, and Awayuki Royal Milk. The latter two being exclusive to their FW23 menu: Inspired by Japanese Culture. I'd not only come back a hundred times over, it'd be my first destination on my next visit to San Diego.

Outstanding cocktails, appetizers, ambiance and customer service. Located by convoy, this is a pleasant place to end the night. The outside of the speakeasy has a great ambiance and a good selection of beer. Upon arrival to the speakeasy we were promptly greeted and started our experience. My cocktail was light, refreshing and tasty! Our server (lead manager) was also kind enough to walk us through the menu and lets us know a little history behind the crafting of our cocktails ordered. This place is a must check out!

Realm of the 52 Remedies stands out as one of the top speakeasy bars in San Diego. Overall, I was really impressed with my experience. You will definitely need reservations to visit. The reservations book up relatively quickly so recommend booking as fast as you can. We didn't order food on this visit but order a couple of rounds of cocktails. The cocktails were great. The standout was their Awayuki Royal Milk which was essentially spiked strawberry milk. It came topped with a strawberry wafer. Inside of the place looked great too! Before you will into the lounge, the host will provide you a backstory on the history and how the cocktails are crafted.

We had an 11pm reservation, but we still had to wait 15 minutes for our table to be ready. I didn't have an issue with it, and the hostess was very apologetic. The hostess lead us into a bright white room and explained a little about the inspiration behind this speakeasy. The entrance, the path leading inside and the decorations inside were cool and theatrical. This experience and its drinks sets this bar apart from others. The drinks itself are pieces of art because they are carefully curated by passionate artisans. The ingredients that make up the drink do not sound like they would go well with each other, but it does!! For example, the Shinigami Apple is shaken with Fontina cheese to create a more velvety finish. I also like that the menu explains the inspiration behind each drink (I did enjoy the anime references). My favorite drink was the Kasato Maru. The combination of ingredients made the drink taste like lychee, but there was no lychee used. Anyways I would totally go back to try every drink. This is a place for people who are adventurous and like to try new things. Just to note, the kitchen closes at 11pm on weekends. So we did not get to try any of the food, though I've heard very good things about it. Also, parking is limited. The parking lot is small compared to all the businesses that use it for their customers.

Everyone who has been here knows that this place is absolute perfection. I've been here twice and I love how they change their menu for drinks and food, it makes it so much more interesting and exciting. The bartenders are so nice to talk to and overall just love the music, vibe, decor!

The bartenders are all wearing SUSPENDERS!!This should tell you everything.Super pretentious. After making us wait 30 minutes to get in and telling us we "were lucky" to get a table.... the place was EMPTY.The drinks were decent, but after all the hassle we left after 30 min.I'll never understand why places give hostess jobs to the young and dumb.Maybe I'm getting old. I used to think places wanted me to spend lots of money....Silly me.

This is my favorite speakeasy ever! I love their Chinese-medicine/apothecary concept and how their drinks revolve around Asian- inspired movies. When we entered the speakeasy from the sports bar, it really did feel like I got transported into another dimension LOL. This is one of the most beautiful & chic bars I've ever stepped foot into! I love how our host encouraged us to be present & to put away our phones. I felt like this "house rule" helped my bf & I enjoy the ambience and spend quality time together. I ordered the Bees Knees, Saigon dreamer, & Earl grey drinks -- each drink was so unique! They really put a lot of thought into crafting each drink. I think my favorite would either be Saigon Dreamer (tastes like Viet coffee) or Earl grey (tastes like an Earl grey milk tea). But, they're pretty strong so beware!

They require a $10 deposit for a reservation. When you go into Common Theory, you speak to the hosts who would walk you into the bar which is an immediate left when you walk in Drinks were good, but food was even better. We only had the yellowtail collar, but that was spectacular. The seasoning was so good and the yellowtail itself was soft on the inside and crisp on the outside Would definitely recommend coming here to try more of their seasonal drinks.
Be the first to ReplyI came here on recommendation of a friend after having seen
I came here on recommendation of a friend after having seen it when visiting the attached establishment (Common Theory). The reservation process via tock was easy although it took several weeks to actually get a spot. That alone increased my expectations of the experience given how many people were willing to sign-up and pay a possible cancellation fee.The foyer before entering was a cool concept and the inside was the dark, intimate vibe that would make it great for a date. The drink selection came with stories for each drink, highlighting the different flavors, receipe, and theme. Food: I often like to get a few items to grab at while drinking. For this I chose the zatar chips, KFQ, and a vegetarian dish. All 3 were tasty albeit a bit pricey for portions and what they were. Drinks: Tried a variety of drinks, one that was seasonale using creme de menthe, another the Early Grey, the Saigon Dreamer, Parasite, and one other seasonal tropical drink. The first which I tried using creme de menthe was so overpowering I could not taste anything else. I don't often send back drinks but had to on this one, the server was happy to give the bar the feedback and change it out. All other drinks of the night were fine though I was not impressed with all the flavor profiles and certainly left expecting more given the hype and thoughtfulness of every other aspect of the bar. Overall - I left a bit underwhelmed. I can appreciate the novelty but had wished the drinks could back the hype especially given its price points.
Be the first to ReplyWow this place is a trip.
Decoration is amazing. You walk into a pocket of a different world. Drinks were delicious. Some were strong. The Lao Sing was sweet and delicious. Parasite was herbal and a little strong. 13 assassins was a gentleman's drink. You'll definitely taste the alcohol.
Be the first to ReplyThis is a must try for everyone visiting the Convoy area!
This is a must try for everyone visiting the Convoy area! This is a speakeasy inside Common Theory and trust me when I say, it is straight fire. Every drink that I tried was both delicious and innovative. Every food item that I tried was delicious as well! I can't stop thinking about this place and am already dying to go back! When you enter, you go through this mini tea room where the host/hostess will give you a mini briefing on the theme of the speakeasy, then you have to wave your hand at the silver character on the door where it'll automatically open up and you walk down a mini hall full of art and characters. Inside is a mirrored wall and the tables and seats add a very nice decorative vibe to the place.A few notable drinks included;Softly spoken- contains rum, cream sherry, coconut, 5 spice and several other ingredients. This drink was so smooth and creamy, but pretty strong if I must say! You can really taste the 5 spice and nutmeg in this drink! So delicious!Early Grey- early grey infused scotch and rum, with honey, and cinnamon cream- I think I just like creamy drinks in general and this one was it! Strong yet subtle at the same time and the earl grey was very aromatic! I felt as if I was drinking an alcohol infused cream tea. Charred broccolini - sweet, nice char flavor, the chili peanut sauce really highlighted how well it pairs with the natural sweetness of broccolini itself. I almost wanted to ask for the recipe for this dish! Clouds over Thailand- Thai tea cheesecake with banana caramel, marshmallow and almonds. The cheesecake and the banana caramel works so well together I still think about it to this day. The marshmallow adds an extra element to the cheesecake that sort of fluffs up the dessert and it works so well! I'm drooling!

Talk about one hell of a speakeasy!! Typically I go to speakeasy's expecting spectacular drinks and if there's food we'll it's typically nothing special. This was definitely not the case here. We were told by friends the apps were small, so we opted to order three and quickly learned they're actually nice size portions, with flavor that exceeded our expectations! We had two servers throughout our experience who were both very knowledgeable and attentive to our needs. My friends went with the Softly Spoken and Spiritual State, while I opted for the Earl Grey. They were all quite different so it's hard for me to pick a favorite, aka you can't go wrong with whatever you choose. As an added bonus they give you these house made cookies with your bill - also soo good! The ambiance and decor alone would have brought me back time and time again, but it's safe to say this place will definitely be one we frequent.
Be the first to ReplyThe speak-easy concept was nice.
Well decorated dining and bar area. We had reservations for 6 and all went well. Limited menu and pricey. Food nothing to brag about, just okay. Drinks too expensive. On top of it all, there is an up-front cover charge of $10 per person when you make the reservation. It is not refundable and is not applied to your bill. What is applied to your bill however is an involuntary 20% tip regardless of the service. All 6 of us agreed with the above and will never return.
