Food: Alright Service: Stellar Ambiance: Sophisticated This review is for their New Years Eve Special Dinner menu for $275pp (not including the 20% service charge). My partner took me here for my birthday and it was definitely a splurge so we had high hopes and unfortunately we weren't impressed. The service was exceptional and we were even able to order cocktails from their sister bar, Iris, next door to our table during our dinner. It was a nice touch that Chef David served some of the courses to us himself and spent time chatting with other customers. The restaurant was decorated with balloons for nye and we were seated at a table that allowed us to see the rest of the restaurant along with a peek into the kitchen. The special nye dinner menu was not posted online prior to the actual dinner and was advertised as being abundant in truffle, wagyu, king crab, and caviar. Despite having to pay up front and not knowing the exact menu, my partner was willing to take the risk and was excited to make the reservation based on his research and the accolades of the chef and staff. However, we were disappointed and found ourselves searching for something more that was missing. In fact, my partner was still hungry and was let down to hear from the server that we were moving onto the dessert courses already. My favorite dish was the pine nut miso soup which only ended up having 3 shaves of truffle on top. The ideas were promising, but just didn't deliver for us as some elements on the plate seemed disjointed as well as the dessert courses that missed the mark and didn't seem to make for a cohesive menu overall. So in the end, we definitely don't think it was worth the money as we weren't blown away by any of the dishes, but if you're really wanting to try Nisei, go for their regular tasting menu instead of one of their special menus.

This has been one of my favorite Michelin star restaurants by far - the service, ambiance, presentation and taste of food were all up to par & beyond. When I say the food was delicious, I mean DELICIOUS- each & every dish; so much so, I can't even pick a favorite. This is a special place that will leave an everlasting memory for sure - well worth the visit. Whether an anniversary, date night or bday, this should be very high on your list of places to choose.

Dined here at Nisei on 3/7/2024 - One of the best dining experiences I have had in recent memory. The food and presentation were excellent. The service from the staff especially Natalie and Sophia our servers were outstanding. I wish I could remember the name of the other amazing lady as well - all of them were attentive and caring. The sommelier Ian was knowledgeable and engaging, suggesting a delicious Riesling which I enjoyed so much. Last but not least, Chef David was gracious and super attentive - so talented and yet humble, relatable and kind (also so young to have a Michelin star in his impressive CV). The space was warm and inviting while providing comfortable and ample distances between tables. We will definitely return!!
Be the first to ReplyEvery creative, unexpected dish Nisei served surprised me.
Yet once I tasted them, I knew they were exactly how they should be. The dinner expanded what I understand can be done with food. It is clearly rooted in Japanese tradition, yet feels cutting edge and contemporary. 3,4 or 5 different flavors are perfectly balanced within different dishes on a sort of journey across the palate. You can tell the staff love the food by their passion when describing the dishes. It's clear they are treated well and are proud to be part of the restaurant's mission. I felt taken care of at a level I expect from the highest quality restaurants in the world. Get a reservation before they have 3 Michelin stars and it's impossible to get a table!!!
Be the first to ReplyLove our experience here.
Staff was so accommodating and warm whenever they came to our table. They were so knowledgeable about each dish and each question we had. Love that everything had a little story. The restaurant is small and dark but the tables were lit just right. I enjoyed this restaurant and want to try their menu during a different season.
Be the first to ReplyFirst time and wow! Stunning flavors and textures.
Warm, knowledgeable service. Cool and relaxed atmosphere. If you want to splurge for an amazing meal, this is the place to do it.

One of the best Japanese dishes I ever had! The staff the very friendly and knowledgeable. The chef came to introduced himself and I got the seat in front of the kitchen. I was amazed how small the kitchen was and how they efficiently attend to the customers. Every dish was amazing, the food speaks for itself..

We had the best culinary experience at Nisei! It was a special occasion celebrating my niece's birthday and she was treated to a perfect night. It was a complete dining adventure with exquisite food, delightful presentation, and warm and inviting hospitality. Some of the highlights of our meal were caviar with sourdough mochi, pine nut miso soup, tempura anago, smoked squab, and Hayashi abalone. We all had different favorites but agreed upon how delicious everything was. We were honored by two visits by Chef David which really adds a nice touch. It's great to meet the creator of this gastronomic entertainment. Lastly, I must commend the staff. I believe they are an integral part of the Michelin star and stars in the future. They are effortlessly professional without being stuffy. We don't always encounter that in fine dining and it is so much appreciated. Danielle, you're the best! Your communications and orchestrations makes me want to hug you and that's what we did :)
Be the first to ReplyAnother fantastic fine dining experience in San Francisco.
A set of small and beautiful, flavor-first dishes fusing Japan with California. However, subtlety was the key in each. My friend said the pine miso soup was the best soup he had anywhere. The scallops reminded me of a similar dish at Kiln. The fried eel tempura in eel bone broth (eels have bones?) with gooseberry and lime was my favorite. We ended with a citrus rich palette cleansing dessert, a cheese and aged fruit course, a "good fortune" digestive tea, rum flambéed pumpkin flan, and some traditional Japanese sweets that you could choose from a cart. The ambience is not my favorite but the servers were all excellent.

First meal in SF, and I'm so happy and thankful it was at Nisei! I opted for the prix fixe tasting menu. I was amazed by the creativity, presentation, and thought behind every course. Every flavor combo was intricate and carefully crafted. And just when I thought a bite couldn't be topped, I was blown away by the next. Like the rarity of perfect pitch to a musician, Chef David is actually a genius with flavor and presentation. I was lucky enough to be one of the first to try his latest revisions/enhancements of a dish which turned out to be one of my favorites of the night - scallops over brown butter butternut squash. I also anticipate myself dreaming about the pine nut miso soup. I have no words but simply amazing. Everything was exquisite. Also, service was impeccable. Solo dining can be nerve wrecking but not at Nisei! From the moment I stepped through the doors, I was greeted as if I were family. Ngl I was lowkey shocked Ian knew my name but I quickly gathered myself when I remembered my name was on the reservation. Throughout the night, Ian, Ruben, and Chef David (the man, the myth, the legend) shared little anecdotes of the stories behind the decor, the dishes, and the inspiration - I loved listening to the stories. They were so engaging and so fun to talk to! I don't know if my next meals could ever top this experience. And sorry, no photos because I wanted to play it cool like I fine dine all the time and wasn't a noob.

Fantastic creative tasting menu restaurant with dynamic ingredients and super professional service. They have a Michelin star for a reason. The dishes are Japanese-centric, but with an American and European twist. Definitely get the sake pairing with your tasting - incredible opportunity to try a variety of unique sake styles. Hip, modern decor and a young crew taking care of you. Highly recommended!

I went here for my 30th birthday and can't imagine a better location to celebrate it. Amazing food (taste and presentation), service staff is so warm and welcoming. We sat at the chef's counter and it was so fun to see the action in the kitchen.
Be the first to ReplyUnique atmosphere, unique food, and great staff.
We went for an anniversary and had a wonderful time. Drinks were fantastic and a work of art. I will say some ingredients on the dinner menu, if you are a picky eater, will not be for you. But I'd encourage you to keep an open mind. There is no better spot to push the envelope and try something new. There were things I didn't think I would like on the prefix multi course menu and was pleasantly surprised. Highlights were the crab, the cute little Japanese pancakes, and grilled eel. Separately as a gift, my spouse shadowed in the kitchen. He loves cooking and this was a great chance to learn from some talented, friendly people. Everyone on staff made him feel welcomed. He got to go from kitchen station to station. He watched them prepare the eel, he got to help chop or mix things, and asked a lot of questions. Overall A+ Neisi team, we can tell you love food. Thanks for sharing a great day with us.

Nisei has been on my list since opening its brick and mortar location, after reading reviews regarding its concept, creative and delicious dishes, and the inspiring story behind Nisei and Chef David Yoshimura. I finally had the opportunity and privelege to experience Nisei, and it did not disappoint. A five star experience from beginning to end. We arrived few minutes early, and was greeted immediately with a friendly smile, checked-in right away, and escorted to our beautifully arranged corner table. We were one of the first diners to arrive, so we were able to observe and take photos of the gorgeous dining area. It's simple, clean, modern, classy, and more importantly, comfortable. The lighting is soft and gently calming. The artwork is beautiful and not overwhelming. The kitchen is not overly exposed, where diners have a glimpse of the kitchen if they desire, and the kitchen has full view of the dining area for observing diners. The layout and design is perfect. The intention and attention to detail is quite apparent. The service was impeccable. After being seated, we were attended to promptly, and provided a beverage menu, and water of our choice. Drinks were ordered, and served. Our tasting service followed without delay. As each dish arrived at our table, we were explained clearly and in detail what each was and contained.Every dish of the 12 courses was delicious!Standouts:Datemaki with scallop and topped with Uni - So fresh, soft and tender, with a subtle sweetness.Suppon turtle soup with negi and mochi - This soup appears simple, but it's anything but. Sipping this soup, and biting into the mochi immediately took me back to my childhood, when my grandma used to make a Chinese version of this. This dish was so nostalgic, and comforting. Definitely can relate to this dish being second generation AA myself. Amazing!Milk bread topped with Ankimo pate and cranberry jam - I could eat 10 of these badboys! Warm, buttery and creamy goodness!Dungeness crab with winter melon, and king trumpet mushrooms - OMG! So fantastically delicious! I was tempted to pick up the shell and lick it, however that would not have been the best practice or behavior given the setting.Black cod wrapped with seaweed served with a Sturgeon caviar sauce, and pan seared satsuma imo - Light, refreshing, with a hint of oceanic brininess perfectly paired with the crispy and chewy texture of the potatoes.Braised and smoked beef cheek with drizzled with beef jus - Tender, and smoky with a touch of sweetness.Ribeye and tongue seared on a hot stone at the table, served with accompaniments (crispy rice cakes, lettuce, and black bean sauce) - Build your own hand-roll type of dish. The ribeye perfectly marbled, seared to perfection along with the tongue, both are melt in your mouth deliciousness.Thank you Chefs and service team for your amazing work and service.Thank you Chef Yoshimura for your determination and tenacity.See y'all again soon!

Be the first to ReplyService is for sure undefeated.
Natalie was amazing. Such a kind and attentive waitress. The food was yummy. 11 courses to power through. An impressive place to take your date to!
Be the first to ReplyMake time for the experience.
With 11 courses in the standard prix fixe dinner and plenty of add-ons like caviar and wagyu, the experience is a delightful blend of artistic creativity, presentation and tastes. The overall theme is seafood ranging from a scallop themed course to separate Dungeness crab, unagi and black cod courses. A monkfish liver dish and squab curry course balanced out the seafood flavors. Highly recommend for a very special and unique SF experience. Interior is elegant and austere. Servers were attentive and knowledgeable.
Be the first to ReplyThe food was extremely lackluster to us.
There were ideas, but nothing stood out for anyone of us in the group. We felt that while service was good, it couldn't make up for the many misses we had for our dishes. I even made a comment that one of the dishes wasn't bad -- it turned out to be the palette cleanser that i liked. Oops.

Our parents are Nisei, and so this inventive homage to the delicious simplicity of Japanese American cooking was something we wanted to experience. We were not disappointed! Everything was wonderful from the impeccable service, to the exquisite dinner (the wagyu add on is a must!) with beautiful plating, and then getting to meet and chat with chef David about what influences his cooking.... Such a wonderful evening, from beginning to end!
Be the first to ReplyOne of my favorite ever Michelin dinners.
I have been here twice, once before it received its star and once after. Both times I was very happy with the service and food. This place has a great seasonal tasting menu and a delicious wine pairing. Maybe I'm biased because I prefer whites and this menu is heavily seafood-skewed. Usually I joke about needing to eat before these types of restaurant but come hungry. Most of the 11 or 12 courses are not only beautiful but also substantial . The only note I had with the pacing is that the add-on wagyu course came as one of the final rounds. I had given up by then but I still had to eat those melt-in-your-mouth pieces. It is served with accompaniments but after the delicious unagi rice box I was too full. Oftentimes I scoff at the portions in fine dining, but this is DEFINITELY going to leave you full and satisfied! Looking forward to next visit already. P.s. the ambience is very modern and sleek, I went with work colleagues but it would be a great date spot!
Be the first to ReplyIncredible experience from start to finish! When we made
Incredible experience from start to finish! When we made the reservation, Nisei reached out to ensure they understood our allergies and to ask if we were celebrating a special occasion. Our group had many allergies and they were one of the most thoughtful restaurants I have been to in terms of substitutions. We went to Single Thread (3 Michelin) and they did not pay close to as much attention as Nisei. Definitely dine here before it is awarded a Michelin star. The service struck the perfect balance of being warm, observant, descriptive but not pompous. I'm glad I didn't try to study up menus ahead of time because everything was a wonderful surprise. I normally do not eat lamb but their lamb course was unbelievable. Each of us had different favorite courses and thoroughly enjoyed each one. For the ingredients sourced, technique, and portion size, the tasting menu is a great deal. We all left very full, in the best way. Often at tasting menus there are a few misses but Nisei's level of execution was bar none. Only tiiiiny recommendation would be to add some greenery to the decor to break up the black.

Took my husband for his birthday here and this place did not disappoint! We didn't know what to expect and was pleasantly surprised that Nisei is essentially Japanese home comfort food meets fine dining. We were seated in front of the kitchen which was fun to see all the action. Service was exceptional. The art on the wall was very colorful and vibey. Would definitely recommend as a special occasion spot.
Be the first to ReplyStaff is great and food is great.
Parking can be a little difficult and price can be a little difficult to bear.
Be the first to ReplyA disappointing, expensive dinner.
First bad started out poorly - the mochi crisp was not good. Texture was much too hard for the soft hamachi inside.Oyster with pea sauce was very good.Pickled watermelon rind was not exciting.Salmon was very good, uni course was solid.Milk bread was not milk bread - it was some really, really dense poorly textured bread. Desserts were attractive, but didn't hit the spot.Went home hungry because the main course was lamb, and neither of us eat lamb.We had a fun night out, but not from the food.
Be the first to ReplyI don't Yelp but I was shook by this meal.
It was unbelievable. Our Server(I wish I could remember her name) was friendly, knowledgeable and witty. The food was creative, delicious and curated. Service was beautifully attentive but not stuffy. The wine pairings were on point. FOR THE LOVE OF GOD GET THE CAVIAR COURSE! ITS WORTH IT! Thanks team Nisei.
