Fabulous food and staff in lovely 1890’s Building
Our recent visit to York included dinner at Roots, a restaurant we’d wanted to visit for some time. My wife and I certainly weren’t disappointed, everything was amazing from the welcoming, informative staff to the mind blowing food served in forms only very creative minds could invent. We had the seasonal Tasting Menu including the supplemental scallop with black truffle and cheese course plus match wines. It’s impossible to come up with a favourite course as they were all highlights of the meal. We now know you can turn the humble potato and chicory root into one of the best deserts in the world. Serving bread and butter later in the meal so you can use it to soak up a fantastic sauce from the previous course was ideal and something other restaurants could learn from, bread doesn’t have to come first.

Unbelievable food, great staff, lovely ambience, cannot make fault at all, a truly superb experience from first course to last, my wife and myself chose the tasting menu which was stunning and outrageously good and i would recommend without hesitation.

Have to say, Roots didn't live up to the hype unfortunately. Food was good, but just not worth the price. Having bread as one of the taster courses and also a mouthful of broth (whilst tasty) felt a little tight. When asking what the difference was between two Gin options on the drinks menu, the waitress said she didn't know and didn't offer to find out either - wouldn't mind if this was a regular restaurant, but just not what you expect at a Michelin starred resultant from a very well respected Chef.

We have dined at Roots several times since it opened as we are lucky enough to live a short walk away. without fail the food has always been incredible. There is variation every time we dine which keeps things interesting. The wine pairings are always spot-on and the attention to detail and service are always exceptional. I’m sure we will continue to visit for special occasions in the future!
Be the first to ReplyGreat experience once you get past the booking process
We came here for lunch and had the lunch menu, one vegetarian and one regular. We were welcomed quickly and immediately taken to our table, this felt a little rushed and we couldn’t get there earlier because doors opened at our booking time. Waitress on our table was excellent, friendly, helpful and knowledgeable accommodating my request to swap in a particular dish from the tasting menu. Standard of food was excellent, of the 7 courses I had there wasn’t one which was just OK and a couple were really amazing. Stand outs for me were a cod course, the insertion, and a hogget course. Sweet courses were also special with a granita and rhubarb courses being a stand out. For the vegetarian those courses were also a very high standard. My seat had a view of the kitchen and both the management of the pass by the head chef and the attention to detail of the chef’s preparing the dishes were fascinating. It was lunch so we didn’t go mad on the wine but I would say we were sceptical of the idea wine could come in a tin however the two wines we tried were excellent and almost sensibly priced. Only other comment is that it’s not cheap, we shipped over £300 for two and you have to assess value in your own way but we were happy with the experience for that price. Overall a great meal to the standard you would expect for a star and a Black Swan derivative. Only reasons for dropping a point were the rush on entry and the booking process. When I tried to book through their website I was taken to a 3rd party website that tried very hard to get my details. The contact details of people who dine at this level are very valuable and I am extremely cautious who gets mine. My refusal to give them over meant I lost the booking originally and only got a booking after sending a sarcastic email complaining.

Exciting, tasty, delicious food at Roots. This was an incredibly special evening for my birthday at a restaurant in a really beautiful city. The food really was spectacular, it was so clever and so impressive. Nice touch when we arrived there was a birthday card at the table for me. The tasting menu paired with wine was really spectacular - all the courses were just sublime and we thoroughly enjoyed both of them! Including the supplements (scallops and cheese). The staff were really attentive and informative as well. It is pricey, so be prepared, but it’s totally worth it.
Be the first to ReplyA great Christmas present from my wonderful son!
Exceptional service from knowledgeable staff, who served both food and wine in a timely and professional manner. Roots lived up to its reputation, having eaten at The Abbey , Roots is up there with the best Tasting Menus we have experienced though it comes at a price. Our only disappointment was the extra charge for the scallops course which seems unnecessary given the cost, so we declined. The wine pairing which were complimentary for our visit were very good and we loved the British Fizz. We both felt the final dessert dish was very sweet and over loaded the menu and we would have preferred the scallops dish instead. However after almost 3 hours of superb fine dining we left feeling we would love to return if they offer the complimentary wine pairing in the future.

Set in what used to be a public house the set up was tastefully done and the service was exemplary (lots of staff). We opted for the tasting menu and the wine pairing. A split decision on the experience. I thought the food did not match up to the price tag or the sales hype. The food was nice (as were the wines) but for this sort of experience and price you want to be blown away (wasn't). This is now a well populated market in Yorkshire and there are better.

Well, what a fantastico visit to Roots we just had. The city was crazy busy on a Saturday night and the rain was bucketing down. Soaked, flooded but then well-fed in a luxury restaurant. The pescatarian tasting menu was top class. Stand out dishes were Cod/Razorclam/Dill (why always dill?) and also Monkfish/Beetroot/Cherry. One of the desserts was also straight from the Banks' playbook - Potato/Chicory Root. Yes, that was the dessert and one of the stickiest and most delicious imaginable. It was Michelin Starred brilliance. Thanks to everyone who works there for a terrific evening.
Be the first to Replybad fish
We had the tasting menu- exceptional at the time. However, of the party of 6 , 5 fell with very bad food poisoning later that evening. We identified the problem as the fish course of the menu which didnt smell that fresh when it was served. One of the group decided not to eat it- funny that they were the one that wasnt sick. S..t happens when you are eating good food, however Roots response was to deny all blame when we contacted them to let them know. In fact they asked us to provide them with a stool sample- pretty difficult to scrape it off our bathroom wall!! We werent looking for a refund, more of an apology and a sign that they'll keep a more careful eye out next time they serve the dish. Pretty poor going for a place that is reliant on its reputation. We wont be eating there again.

Exquisit and fantastic experience throughout: meal service, with the recommended wine.still room for slight improvement to match the dishes.. only recommendation is eat less and enjoy more...
Be the first to ReplyAbsolutely perfect
Myself and my husband had lunch here and we ordered the tasting menu, it was phenomenal! Everything was perfect. The staff were very pleasant and knowledgeable with regards to the menu. I honestly can’t speak highly enough for the standard achieved. It was all the small touches that made it for us. The restaurant emailed ahead for dietary requirements and these were remembered and clearly printed on the menu. We ordered a bottle of white wine and my husband ordered a glass of red wine for his meat course and this was brought straight out without having to prompt. I am vegetarian and quite often when I eat out this can be a dull affair however my food looked just as good as my husbands. We have done quite a few Michelin star restaurants but I think this was by far our favourite. Well done to everyone for making our lunch so special and memorable.
Be the first to ReplyOff the scale experience at Roots
I would love to describe in infinite detail how good this experience was, however even though English is my first language, I don’t possess enough adjectives to do it justice. It was just utterly amazingly sublime. We had the 12 course tasting menu and shared an optional cheese course, plus we both had the accompanying wine flight. The pace of the evening was perfect and the staff were so lovely. Service was efficient but ever so friendly and all took genuine pride in adding to our experience. Each course was an array of dancing flavours on the palate. The Charlotte potato, leek and old Winchester was one of all the stand out dishes as was the now famed potato and chicory dessert. Both an amazing example of design and craft, but all of the courses were amazing. The array of tastes, textures and temperatures causing the most mind blowing sensations in the mouth. The wine flight too was paired to perfection including the “Christmas pudding” sherry. This was our first “star” meal since the Black Swan pre-COVID and I had forgotten how amazing the food is. In 2020 COVID robbed me of my taste and smell, with the latter still not 100%, but tonight I realised there’s nothing wrong with my taste, which was quite a revelation! Thanks to everyone connected with Roots for a totally unforgettable magical experience.
Be the first to ReplyAmazing food, amazing service. Thankyou
This is the 5th time we have been to Roots and Tommy and Will didn’t let us down. The tasting menu was delicious, unbelievable flavours with surprising ingredients.. who knew that potato and chicory could make such a delicious dessert? The crab and the Charlotte potato, cheese and leek were amazing. The service was brilliant, such knowledgeable staff, with a big shout out to Anna only five weeks in and totally on point. We will be back

Wow. Amazing. Phenomenal. Mind and palate blowing. Delicious. Every superlative you can think of can be applied to Roots. My husband and I brought my 92 year old mum for her Christmas present treat and to celebrate our wedding anniversary. When you know you’re going to be spending such a large sum on food, you want it to be spectacular- and oh my it certainly was! Food and combinations I could never have imagined let alone tried were presented (dried and grated deer heart anyone?) so beautifully, and an absolute flavour explosion. Each dish’s creation and ingredients (mostly from ‘our farm’) described by the most delightful staff. I still can’t believe how phenomenal this meal - experience/ event - was. The 3 1/2 hours flew by. The matching wines were superb. I loved every single course. The potato and chicory dessert was - as James Martin described it - the best dessert ever. How do they come up with these?! Mind blowing. A perfect evening and I feel blessed to have been able to experience Roots and the exquisite food and service. Thank you Will Lockwood and all the team for a heavenly evening.
Be the first to ReplyTruly Terrific
Visited yesterday for lunch with family and selected the tasting menu. WOW... every course was a masterclass of visual beauty and amazing taste. The staff were all knowledgeable, enthusiastic and super helpful. Each course was terrific, making it difficult to pick a favourite.... but top 3 would say were a parsley and crab dish, a leek potatoe and cheese bowl of deliciousness and then a chicory and potatoe dessert...... So lovely to have the connection throughout to the farm and seasonal/preserved ingredients. And finally, a mention of wine in a can..... who knew that was such a good idea. Perfect if you want smaller serving or try several varieties I was tge designated trivet so had a thimble full..... Next time I am going to make a weekend visit to York to allow me to add the matched wines.

This has to be at the pinnacle of fine dinning in the UK. The dishes were imaginative, daring and innovative. Presentation immaculate with a definitive twist unique to Tommy Banks' style. Congratulations to a superb team at the restaurant in creating an experience that will be remembered by my partner and myself until we return. This was for a celebration for my 60th and I couldn't have wished for anything more.
Be the first to ReplyA Fitting Birthday Celebration
This was my fourth visit to Roots and it interesting to see the transformation and change to their concept. Shortly after it opened we enjoyed a beautiful Sunday lunch, then tasting menus for £85, £100 and now £135 per person. Unchanged, is the relaxed, charming decor, the exceptional service and the unparalleled sourdough! The prices have continued to increase, but so has the number of courses and the spectacular flavours. Looking back at my 188 reviews I haven't done one on Roots, so the time has come!... It was a visit for my 50th birthday, so a special occasion with my parents and husband. We had the beautiful table in the window alcove which lends itself to convivial conversation and a full view of the other guests. My only negative would be how chilly the room was, and after reading other contributors comments, I'm not the first to say it. From beginning to end, it lived up to expectations and despite the expense (£930 for four) it was a fitting celebration for my big day. Highlights were the raw deer, monkfish and the pear with pumpkin seeds. I really can't describe the flavours other than to say they were exquisite and showcased exceptional ingredients, lovingly created by a brilliant team. After witnessing Will Lockwood win the GBM Yorkshire and North East competition, I really can see the unprecedented skill and imagination needed to create such imaginative and delightful cuisine. I would say we will be returning (which we will), but it won't be too soon, as it's an experience for which one needs to save up! In the mean time, we'll be visiting 'Allium' at The Vices. It will be interesting to see the comparison, value for money, and contrasting experience.
Be the first to ReplyEnjoyable evening
We had originally booked for a birthday meal but had to postpone due to covid - Bridget was brilliant at helping to secure an alternative date. Eventually made it in August. A very enjoyable and chilled evening. The tasting menu was very well received including the vegetarian option. Service was on point and each course excited our tastebuds. The only marmite moment was the fruit pastilles, but we would not hesitate to return again for a special occasion.
Be the first to ReplyOverpriced and underwhelmed. The emperor’s new clothes springs to mind!!
We first went to Roots when it first opened in 2018, it was a fantastic experience. Amazing food, great service a lovely bar to have a pre dinner cocktail. The food now, just doesn’t compare to then. And at £424 for 2 taster menus a bottle of wine and one cocktail, outrageous. Don’t waste your money. Go to Skosh, where you’ll have true value for money and far better service. Final comment, the deserts were terrible
Be the first to ReplyOutstanding
Wow! From the moment we arrived, we knew we were going to enjoy a special meal. The staff gave us a very warm welcome and immediately mentioned that they knew about my nut allergy and that I was pescatarian. My dining partner had no such dietary requirements so they had provided us with two individual menus. A really nice touch. We can’t fault any part of the meal as everything was fantastic. The staff deserve a special mention for being so friendly and knowledgeable. The wine pairings were excellent and each was described with knowledgeable enthusiasm. Thank you for a lovely dining experience, Roots!
Be the first to ReplyFood was way below Michelin star quality!
We had the tasting (pre-prepared menu) menu which was not ideal but we were not given a choice. Often, the food would be very salty and too smoky. The venison was supposed to be rare but it was under cooked and chewy. The doughnut with the meat was under cooked, salty and sweet. Mixing often incompatible tastes, salty, sweet and smoky and making the portions minuscule in large plates does not necessarily make you a gourmet restaurant. We certainly felt that the one Michelin star award was way too overrated for this place. In all fairness, the staff were very friendly and professional. However, the service was slow - exceeding 2.5 hours. We definitely do not plan to come again in the near future.
Be the first to ReplyEpic.
10 courses, 4 hours. Amazing food, creativity out of this world. A little slow between some courses but everything else compensated. One of the best dining experiences I've had, ever.
Be the first to ReplyReally disappointing and at times downright unpleasant
My partner and I had the evening tasting menu as well as a cocktail to start with. The cocktails were ok, pleasant but no wow factor and we would say fair for the price. The dinner however was not good at all - most of the courses I found incredibly salty or we generally found very underwhelming, and some elements were even very unpleasant tasting. We had a couple of ok courses and some elements of some courses were really nice (if let down by other parts of the course). In another restaurant this would be fine but when you are spending so much on the tasting menu you expect much better. It was a real shame as they had some nice ingredients and concepts, but they just didn’t feel well executed at all for the type of restaurant it is. To add to this the portions were so tiny throughout that by the end we picked up some snacks from the supermarket to take home!
The staff were pleasant and friendly so can’t fault them at all.
If this were a cheaper restaurant I would have perhaps given it more stars and thought “that was ok but we’ll not revisit”. However, taking into account the cost and expectations for the restaurant I’ve given it 2 stars - there are many other lovely restaurants in York for a fraction of the price that are much nicer.
Not worth a star
We found the food was far too salty in every course, so where is the umami for a star resto? We both got very ill (throwing up) as soon as back to hotel, so definitely something wrong with the food. After experiencing with some other star restos around Europe, this is the worst ever and not worth a star at all. Sometimes i wonder how Michelin rates their restos?
So many staffs around but we have to walk to the reception ourselves to ask for our bill, so paying 12,5% mandatory service charge for what? After we have out bill, and still have to wait and call the staff where do we pay coz we just want to get out of there asap. We didnt even want to have the last course anymore.
The price is far too expensive for what you got, if you are lucky enough not to get ill with food poisoning.
