The place is very welcoming and the staff are very nice.
I visited on Sunday late afternoon. If you bring a car, it seems like there are plenty of street parking spaces. There is a bike lane connecting to the restaurant. Also, I saw an electric car charging station. The place isn't too big. Maybe 15-20 teams at a time. The interior is very warm and has some old scent to it. We ordered Saigon pho and beef tripe pho. The soup was so good. I love how it doesn't taste like those powder soup. Very ordinary pho without chemical taste. I loved it. Will definitely come back for another lunch or dinner.

Definitely the place to go to in the area, jammed with locals, students and tourists. Didn't venture inside which looked crowded and noisy but was lucky enough to snare an outside table to enjoy our delicious banh mi and egg rolls. Fast service and reasonable prices.

Saigon Shack is a small but busy little spot in the west village. I came in on a friday night during prime dinenr hour and it was a small wait for a table for two. I was pleasantly surprised by the taste and portions here though, no compaints on how anything tasted here. We had the summer rolls, papaya/mango salad, and grilled lemongrass chicken on rice. I would definitely come back again. Just know ahead of time that its a cash-only spot.

We came on a Tuesday around dinner time, there was no wait so we sat down immediately Food 10/10 Besides the usual pho, and sandwiches, they also have over the rice dish which I appreciate. As much as I like pho, I do wanna eat something else sometimes if I go to a viet restaurant Service 10/10 This is is a cash only place. You probably won't expect that this is cash only but it really is! If you don't have any cash, then you can scan the QR code and basically do a pickup by your table

Seating was very quick (~10 min at dinner) and service was friendly and efficient. I had the grilled lemongrass chicken pho. I thought the broth had a lot of flavor and I liked the sweetness of it. Didn't need any hoisin sauce or sriracha. I'll def come back for an easy, no fuss meal.

I know this place is all the rage and so I was very excited to come. Maybe I ordered the wrong thing, but I thought the food itself was just okay. Was able to get seated immediately upon arrival, but if I had even came 20 minutes later, the line would be out the door. I ordered the Classic Beef Pho and I feel like I've had better pho in NYC. The pho was fairly standard, nothing really stood out. The beef was a bit tough to chew on. I will say that it's pretty reasonably priced compared to other places in NYC but the taste was nothing rave about. I think next time I come, I'll get the Grilled Pork Chops or another vermicelli dish. Overall, not super impressed with Saigon Shack. By the way, it is cash only!

We stopped by here a Saturday night to satisfy our banh mi cravings. First off, their takeout ordering system could certainly use some work; you place your order, then stand outside with no indicator of when your food is ready. We ended up just going in multiple times to check on our order, and every time was shooed out when it turned out to not be ready. Felt like they didn't really want us there. The banh mi itself was just ok. I got the lemongrass chicken bahn mi, and the sandwich was quite dry. Really could use a lot more of the classic mayo that most banh mi have slathered on. The chicken also wasn't juicy or flavorful enough to make up for it. The sandwich could also use a lot more pickled veggies for balance. We also just got their classic banh mi, and this was significantly better. It had bacon bites in it, which added a really nice jammy and sweet flavor. Probably will be back if we're in the area craving sandwiches, but will definitely try to find another spot for our banh mis!

Saigon shack seems to always have a line, and to be honest I can't really understand why when there are better Vietnamese places around. Their pho is pretty standard and it's flavorful but there's just something in the broth that tasted off. The banh mi is just not it though; it seemed too bready and the amount of mayo or whatever creamy spread it was did not work. I was not a fan.
Be the first to ReplyThe beef pho was classic.
Good for a cold day. We went on a hot day and I should have ordered a pork rib bowl. Next time
Be the first to Replythere was a wait but only ~20 mins for 2 on a friday night.
we were seated at the bar. cash only but alternatively you can order and pay online. this means the service you're receiving is order being brought to you, refilling water, whatever other requests you have. we didnt have any other interactions with staff. my friend and i ordered separately and they pointed out how much she tipped before we left. its not that they had poor service but there wasnt much service. 4/5 saigon pho - not bad. flavorful broth, on the sweeter side. i was expecting the taste of the spices to be stronger but alas it was not. noodle texture was fine, decent amount of protein. they gave me all the usual toppings (bean sprouts, basil, lime wedge, oyster sauce and sriracha). decent bowl but l'm still looking for my fav place in the city. i'm from the bay though so i am a little picky when it comes to pho. 4/5 catfish banh mi - this thing was massive. she's so thiccc i couldn't get a proper bite with all the ingredients at once. the fish was cooked well but would have been better if it was crispy, a little asmr as you bite. overall it was good. i would try another one of their banh mi. my friend got their vermicelli bowl and she liked it! but we dont have much to comment on here. 4/5 thai iced tea - standard 3/5 coconut vietnamese coffee - coconut flavor was very light. only a hint of it at the end. would have been delicious with some coconut cream stirred in but it tasted like they just added some of the milk i smelled like food the entire rest of the night lmao. please plan accordingly. we did sit at the bar which is in front of the kitchen so if you're seated at a table maybe theres nothing to worry about.

The food was just mediocre, I ordered summer rolls with shrimp. The shrimp in the summer rolls are rotten, it tastes really bad. And they take cash only. But on the website they said they take credit cards as well. I would not come back for the food. Kinda disappointed

Great Vietnamese food near Washington Square Park! Saigon Shack is a cozy Vietnamese restaurant on Macdougal street. I stopped by with a friend for lunch after spending a day at the park, and we were seating after a ~ 10 minute wait. The smell of pork chops on the grill hits you right when you walk in. Their menu is full of Vietnamese staples like Banh Mi and Pho. Here's what we ordered: Spring rolls: The pork filling was seasoned well and the roll was super crispy. Pork Chop Banh Mi: Juicy Pork, fresh carrots and daikon. Big fan. Pork Rice Bowl: Super filling and came with a delicious tangy sauce. Service was fast and friendly, and the prices are very reasonable for the neighborhood. Only downside is that it's a bit cramped inside. Will definitely be stopping by again!

I've often enjoyed delicious meals here over the years, and good service, too. I've enjoyed all the items on their menu and kept discovering new delights and returning to old favorites. I'm due for another visit soon. I love the ambience and the food and hope it hasn't changed too much since my last visit before the pandemic.

The banh mi! Ok so cash only unless you order off the app, first of all. Second if you're a single, sit at the bar if you can, or a two top. If you're a two top don't try to rude your way into a larger table, it's an ugly look. Service is great, I ordered vegetarian beef banh mi and I'm glad I did! Perfectly crunchy bread with tons of fillings: succulent marinated 'meat', crunchy veggies -carrots and daikon pickled perfectly and cucumbers sliced thin, cilantro not too much! And a soft spread of mayo. Perfection! Banh mi of my dreams! Small place so again, don't be rude!

You might have to wait in a line , but I'd say it's pretty worth it . I usually get the SS pho , and I really enjoy it . Try to go in group of 2 or 3 anything more than that you'll be waiting for a while
Be the first to ReplyFantastic pho and sandwiches.
Have been here 4 times and will definitely be coming back. I've never had to wait more than 15 mins. A great pick for vegetarians since the vegetarian options have fake meat as well. The iced coffee is also good.

Flavorsome Vietnamese food with one of the better pho broths in the city (spicy shaigon shack special) + large portions that give you bang for the buck. Only drawback is that the rest of the food/menu is subpar. $15 a dish. 4.5/5 stars as a lunch spot.
Be the first to ReplyI order from this place 3-5 times a week.
They give you no option in Uber eats to add sauces to your meal. When we order vermicelli we like it with peanut sauce so I wind up calling and asking them to add it to my order on Uber eats manually (since I can't add it myself)Today I called after I placed my order and asked them to add 2 sides of peanut sauce to my order (with charge) and they said they couldn't. I've had them do this for me in the past and not only did they refuse but they refused to send me any or add it onto Uber eats so I could just add it to my cart, like Ive been asking them to do forever! You just pissed off and treated the wrong regular customer badly. It blows my mind when places do this stuff to their regulars. BYE SAIGON!!!

Food felt very authentic. There was healthy portions for the area it was in.

My party of 2 arrived at 5:30pm on a holiday and were seated immediately before the dinner rush hit, which was perfect timing. The ambiance is fast casual with many smaller tables, the bar counter and some larger benches for groups. The stars of the show were definitely the Spicy Shortrib Vermicelli and house-made Passionfruit Soda. - The slow-braised short rib was unbelievably juicy and easy to rip off the bone. Loved the fish sauce flavor and pickled radish! The portion of this bowl was also HUGE and definitely worth the $19.95!- The passionfruit soda was perfect - it didn't taste too sweet and felt light with the bubbles. I would come back just for the soda! - We also enjoyed the Summer Pork Rolls and Spicy Brisket Banh Mi, with its soft baguette and tender brisket! What we ordered (total w/ tax: $52.10):*Appetizer*:Summer Roll - 2 rolls, pork ($8.95)*Entrees*:- Spicy Brisket Banh Mi ($12.95)- Spicy Shortrib Vermicelli ($19.95)*Drinks*:- Passionfruit Soda ($6)- High Tide Sparkling Yuzu ($4)Overall, the dishes we tried are worth the price for their flavors and size! The service was also quick and friendly. I would definitely come back to this spot.

I always love a bowl of pho, and @saigonshack is one of the hottest spot for Vietnamese food in Manhattan these days. If you're looking for pho with lots of toppings and ingredients, and also a place to have a nice casual meal with friends, then this might be the place for you to visit! Personally, the star of this meal for me was actually the crab cake!

This place is always so busy but they also always find a table for us. I don't like pho or Vietnamese cuisine in general to be honest with you but this place is just something else. The pho is the BEST pho in the city in my opinion and I always get their Banh Mi which is also sooooo delicious. I've been here several times and will def come back again and bring my friends.
Be the first to Replythere's much better vietnamese food in NYC.
i don't get the hype?tl;dr if you come here, be ready to wait in a long line. i would NOT recommend the pho at all, but the fried crab cake appetizer and the grilled pork chops are actually good and worth trying. compared to the rest of the hype that this spot gets from other locals, i really don't get itsaigon shack is one of the main spots for viet food in the city, solely because there are few. its proximity to NYU makes it a very popular spot for college students. saigon shack is always crowded outside with long lines, so either get there early or be ready to wait upwards of 30 minutes for a table. you'll be waiting outside since there's no space inside. keep this in mind if you're trying to dine here during the winter!i had medium-high expectations for saigon shack going in due to the hype around it, but one of my viet friends told me that their food wasn't worth it so i was a bit skeptical the whole way through. turns out my friend was correct, it's not worth it. i have had much better food at other viet spots that are down the street from saigon shack, unfortunately.what we ordered:- sweet potato fries ($6) - honestly pretty good and comes with a mayo dip- fresh summer rolls with shrimp ($8.95) - the peanut dip was delicious but the summer rolls were very standard? idk how to describe it- fried crab cake ($12.95) - the most expensive appetizer on the menu but the most delicious one. comes with a tartar sauce to drip the crab cake in as well as some pickled veggies on the side. i'd order this again!- saigon shack pho ($15.95) - comes with fresh thinly sliced beef, beef balls, house brisket - broth was good but everything else was so unbelievably average- spicy s.s. special pho ($19.95) - comes with fresh thinly sliced raw beef, beef balls, house brisket, vietnamese ham - this was not spicy at all so the name was misleading, also very average... nothing really stood out or made it "special"- oxtail pho ($19.95) - the oxtail was fall-off-the-bone tender but didn't really have much flavor other than the pho broth.- grilled pork chops, shrimps, and fried spring rolls with rice ($18.95) - served with cucumbers, lettuce, carrots, daikon, and viet chili sauce. topped with scallions and fried shallots. this was my favorite dish of them all and i would actually rate the grilled pork chops very highly. so flavorful and delicious

Growing up in LA, I was spoiled with so much amazing Vietnamese food around me. Having lived in NYC for over a year, I'm still trying to find the best spots to get a nice bowl of Pho or a Bahn Mi. I visited @saigonshack in Greenwich Village and I was met with long lines when I arrived. They do not take reservations and they are always packed but, they do move fast! We got there at 6pm on a Monday night and waited about 20 minutes for a table. The staff was incredibly kind and welcoming! The decor inside the restaurant was rustic, cozy and cute! What we ordered:Fried Crab CakesShrimp Summer RollsSweet Potato FriesSpicy SS Special PhoSaigon Shack PhoOxtail PhoGrilled Lemongrass Pork Chop, Shrimp, and Fried Spring Rolls over RicePassionfruit SodaCucumber LemonadeThai Iced TeaCoconut Vietnamese Iced CoffeeMy first impression of the pho was solid! I thoroughly enjoyed the broth of the oxtail pho and the Spicy SS Special Pho, which was flavorful and not spicy at all! The lemongrass pork chops were very well made, not dry, and packed full of flavor! The shrimp summer roll was good but they used pickled vegetables instead of fresh herbs and julienned veggies, which wasn't what I expected. The sweet potato fries were tasty but nothing special. The crab cakes were delicious and I would highly recommend ordering those. Overall, I have incredibly high expectations growing up with very good Vietnamese options around me so I set the bar high with new restaurants I try. Saigon Shack is a solid option to get Vietnamese food nearby and I would recommend you checking them out if you're in the mood for it.Rating: 8.2/10
