Best Italian in all of Maui hands down lovely staff and casual ambiance. Definitely coming back to this spot in my next visit to Maui
Be the first to ReplyI contemplated writing this review due to the recent
I contemplated writing this review due to the recent devastation, destruction and suffering on Maui and in this case specifically Lahaina due to the wildfires. However, I feel it is important to note how wonderful, inventive and friendly our experience was at Sale Pepe prior to this horrific wildfire. Our server Heidi was beyond helpful with a great attitude and super friendly (genuinely). The food was superb and the pizza would stand up against the greats of New Haven and New York. The unique and inventive toppings were glorious. It is very sad regarding the loss of life and property that Maui is experiencing. However I hope that someday I have the opportunity to support this community and specifically this local business in person. In the meantime, please take an opportunity to research ways to support this community and restaurant.
Be the first to ReplyThe place is simple and casual, but don't let that fool
The place is simple and casual, but don't let that fool you, this restaurant is real, on a whole different planet from most hyped tourist destinations. Service was good. They know the menu, they are very courteous (especially our waitress Heidi) and service was prompt. It's safe for kids but equally good for a simple romantic dinner for two, with very reasonable prices considering the quality. We were interested in trying their pizzas. We had just traveled to Italy and we've tried many of the best pizza places in SF, LA, NYC, Brooklyn and Chicago. Frankly we were prepared to be let down. However, our experience was just the opposite, our taste buds were set alight with joy. Literal joy. My wife got the Quattro Stagioni and asked for a side of arugula to go with it. She loved every bite. The stiff enough, but soft crust was worth eating on It's own merits, the sauce, the cheese and the veggies were all amazing. I had the Tomato, Fior di Latte, Salame Calabrese Piccante pizza. As with my wife's experience, the dough was amazing, the sauce perfect, fresh tasting and danced on the tongue. However, the star of the show was the Salame Calabrese Picante. Holy cow, this pizza was excellent to the last bite. I wish I could speak to the pasta, but if they put half the care into their pasta that they put into the pizza, I'm sure it with be terrific. A fantastic dinner that we will definitely repeat in the future.
Be the first to ReplyAwesome meal.
Everything was super fresh and scratch made. Awesome pizzas and awesome staff.
Be the first to ReplyJust Great.
My husbands favorite restaurant in all of Maui. Fresh & authentic flavors.
Be the first to ReplyOverrated and terrible service.
Come here if you want to wait for over 1 hour for 2 pastas. The servers are curt and unapologetic, and the food is basic. SKIP!!
Be the first to ReplyThis was an accidental find and so glad we came across it
This was an accidental find and so glad we came across it because it was our best meal of the trip. Recommend reservations, we saw people being turned away or a late sitting time. We ordered whipped ricotta - 10/10 get this Prosciutto pizza very good 9/10 (we added arugula) Pasta with speck - such a unique flavor but so good. 9/10 We were here for 2 weeks and needed a switch up from the Hawaiian flavors and fish. Definitely go here on your trip
Be the first to ReplyMy wife really enjoyed the shrimp and squid ink pasta dish.
I had the risotto and thought it was pretty good. The wood fired pizzas are nothing special. If you are a well versed in Neapolitan pizza - you will probably be disappointed. I can't give 3.5 stars so I gave it 3. I would give it another try.
Be the first to ReplyWe really enjoyed the meal and service.
The whipped ricotta with honey was fantastic and I wish I had ordered my own! It could have come with a bit more bread. My extremely selective eater older daughter went nuts for the pizza with Tomato, Fior di Latte. My rigatoni with Speck and saffron was delicious! Surprisingly the Nutella focaccia was the hit of the dessert course. My only minor complaint is that the lighting in the side room is a bit too dim for us old folks. I cannot speak enough about our server. She was so accommodating and had lots of suggestions for our grumpy sun-burned kid about all sorts of off-menu options. Ottima!
Be the first to ReplyFood was good, that whipped ricotta was great.
. you definitely need extra bread for it tho, staff was great too ONLY THING THAT WASN'T TOP NOTCH was the temperature. If I could change anything, the only thing I could say would be add AC. Not sure if it's bc I'm 7.5 months pregnant but I was uncomfortable the second half of our meal.

Awesome! I could write for pages about this place, but I'll keep it short. The interior and ambiance of the restaurant really makes your experience even better. The service was great! Our food came out very quick, and our waitress was very polite. I would have mentioned her name but I forgot. Before this ends I want to say how GREAT the food was. Each bite was more delicious than the last, I will definitely come back soon! I definitely recommend and I would give it six stars if I could!
Be the first to ReplyMy wife had made a reservation well in advance for a Friday
My wife had made a reservation well in advance for a Friday evening meal to celebrate her birthday. We had no issues being seated because of it--it was packed and there were still people waiting while we were eating. The restaurant had a home-like, rustic feel which we loved. Our server was so kind, professional and knowledgeable of everything on the menu. She was able to answer all of our questions, especially given so many Italian words on the menu. I ended up ordering the "Strozzapreti con Guanciale si Manzo." While it was good, I actually enjoyed eating my wife's pizza which had pancetta and poached egg on it--it was so delicious!! I personally wish I would have ordered a pizza that night, but the pasta was still good! It was a great way to celebrate a birthday, can't wait to come back!
Be the first to ReplyOutstanding pasta.
Service is great as well. We go as often as we can. We recommend the chocolate desert.
Be the first to ReplyAuthentic Italian food, pasta house made, everything from
Authentic Italian food, pasta house made, everything from scratch with fresh local ingredients or imported from Italy to ensure real Italian flavors. Voted BEST ON MAUI for years and deservedly so. The meatballs in marinara starter was delicious. Followed by a REAL Italian pizza from a wood fired oven. Once again authentic flavors that danced on the tastebuds! Reservations a must, service was outstanding from Erin.
Be the first to ReplyRigatoni con Speck, Funghi e Zafferano was so good.
We shared and couldn't stop eating it. Definitely recommend that dish. We also split the romaine and lemon-parmigiano vinaigrette salad but next time would order one for each of us. Pizza Bianca was a good size for splitting and overall tasty but the sausage had a slightly off taste. They brought a candle in our tiramisu dessert (would try a diff dessert next time). Service was ok...we felt ignored for pockets of time but other than that had a great experience.
Be the first to Reply"Focaccia" more like underbaked pita.
Gnocchi is over boiled and tastes like mush. Learn how to slice your cheeses properly, it's not hard to divvy up your Costco purchases. This place sucks.
Be the first to ReplyWe had never tried Sale Pepe until this evening, even
We had never tried Sale Pepe until this evening, even though we knew they were in Lahaina several years ago. It's probably because it does not face the ocean and is located in a strip mall. We were in the mood for Italian food and were reminded of their existence when we read great reviews on Yelp. They make all of their own pasta and also specialize in thin crust pizza. We shared a Caprese salad (photo on the left) and one other appetizer. My entree was Gnocchi Quattro Formaggi (photo on the right below)--it was so yummy! Joe's entree was Squid Ink Spaghetti served with local shrimp and a spicy Calabrian salami paste. He loved it.We'll definitely return on our next visit to Maui.
Be the first to ReplyService: Our waitress was excellent.
She had good recommendations and in general was very pleasant to interact with. Appetizer: I tried the vegetarian crostini with ricotta, basil and fresh cherry tomatoes. All the ingredients are really fresh which is what elevates this dish from a fancy garlic bread. Main Course: Pappardelle in mushroom cream sauce. I substituted the parpardelle pasta with a hand twisted pasta. All their pastas are made in house and are delicious. I dont think you could ever go wrong with any pasta here. Dessert: Lemon Gelato. The most refreshing bite of the night. The presentation honestly wasn't up to par with the appetizer and main course but the taste was absolutely breathtaking. Highly recommend!!! My dad had the wedge salad with lemon dressing, meatball appetizer and shrimp appetizer for his main course and there wasn't one thing he disliked! Note to the restaurant:Ambience: You guys have fans, use them!! It gets really stuffy/ smoky inside and the stale air tends to give people headaches. The dessert presentation can be significantly improved. I believe in you guys! For the vegetarian crostini appetizer, swapping out the ricotta with burrata will pick up the sweetness of the tomatoes and freshness from the basil even more!
Be the first to ReplyThis place is totally overrated, and I cannot understand
This place is totally overrated, and I cannot understand why there is a line outside the door. I live in Chicago, where you can find incredible Neapolitan-style pizza for $14-16 a pie, so perhaps I am biased, but I didn't expect to pay $24+ for a totally average, overcooked (meaning dry and burned on the sides) pizza . In addition, our crostini was thick like garlic bread, making it impossible to eat with the shrimp topping, and the burrata appetizer did not come with bread--instead we had to pay for three small pieces of subpar pita. But the food was not the only disappointment, it was the general attitude of the place towards its customers. Let me elaborate. After we received our bottle of wine, the power in much of the town went out and we were told the kitchen was closed. Given that we literally had one sip of wine, the server could have said it was on the house, retained the bottle, and sent us on our way. Instead, we had to pay for the entire bottle, which we were told we could take home. At this point we didn't really want the wine, but we didn't have the choice. Despite this, we still wanted to see what all the hype was about so we asked if we could reschedule for the following evening. The hostess said the wifi was not working so she could not make a reservation, but our server promised to get in touch the following day and squeeze us in. She never did. Instead we had to make our own reservation, eating much later than we hoped (the only opening was at 8:15). We returned the following evening, and while the service was good we had hoped that, in light of the inconveniences the evening before, the restaurant might have given us a free appetizer, dessert, or even glass of wine (we did tell our server about the previous evening so she did know). However, we received nothing of the sort; that is, no kind gesture acknowledging that we mattered as guests (FYI: I have worked in food service for 30 years, including at the Four Seasons Hotel, so I know that these small gestures are not burdensome for restaurant owners, but really make a difference for guests). In short, this place seems, unfortunately, to be more concerned with the bottom line than their guests.

Go here for some Italian comfort food! Loved the refreshing lemon basil martini that transformed me to the Amalfi coast and truffle pesto pasta! Great portion and price point at $50 with goods imported from Italy!
Be the first to ReplyAmazing food and great staff.
We had dinner February 22, 2023. We started off with the Lemon Basil Martinis which were delicious. They were so good my husband had two.We then had a appetizer - It was a special. Cured salami I think. Flavors were superb. We shared a Salad; Romaine with fresh lemon, dijon, olive oil and Parmigiano. so much better that the usual Caesar Salad. For my main entree, I had the Chicken Picatta and my husband had a Pizza with tomato and Meatballs, which was from Maui Cattle Co. Everything we had was so delicious. I also enjoyed a glass of wine which was a med red; of course from Italy. If you are anywhere near Lahaina, HI, I would call and make a reservation. We were there on a Wednesday and there was a waiting line.Kudos to our waitress Michelle, the hostess Jamie, and the bartender who made a excellent drink. Grazie Mille!
