I don't get the hype
Getting a reservation for this restaurant should be a competitive sport. I was finally able to score a reservation and was looking forward to the dining experience with friends. We did the wine pairing with our meal, and though the food was good, it wasn't memorable for any of us. Considering how difficult it is to obtain a reservation, I thought the food would be mind-blowing, but it wasn't. It definitely isn't worth the hype in my opinion.
Be the first to Replybest dining experience this trip
We were really lucky to get a reservation for 4 early this month. My wife and I had dined here 4 years ago. My memories of this restaurant was that it was fine and this time, yes it was excellent. Reasonable prices, very creative dishes, great wine, the dessert was divine, best we had this trip. Unassuming but the food speaks for itself, delish!
Be the first to ReplySpectacular. Go!
If you can grab a table, don't hesitate! The food was a surprise from course to course. There is no menu, but they ask about allergies and preferences at the start of a meal. My teen daughter requested no cheese (I know - this is France, right) and they prepared versions of some dishes for her that were every bit as delicious as our own. Capers instead of goat cheese? Genius! Anyway, it was BY FAR our favorite meal during a week of Michelin-starred meals in Paris. We brought home their cook book.
Be the first to ReplyAFFORDABLE HAUTE CUISINE
Local ingredients play into unfussy, well-priced tasting menus washed down with natural wines. Overall, everything is just perfect.
Be the first to ReplySommelier is the nicest guy!
Really incredible food, but the sommelier is so nice and clearly loves his job! Very knowledgeable and very very nice!
Be the first to ReplyExcellent Food and service by servers but snotty condescending self absorbed attitude of Sommelier ruined the experience
This is the second time I have eaten at Septime. The first was back in 2012 when it was not as sought after as it is now (high end parisians didn't go to the sketchy 11th but it was on the radar as an up and comer which is what I look for on my visits to major cities). Having not been able to get a reservation due to demand in the last 4 trips to Paris, some friends and I were able to snag one this time. Well, let me tell you first, that the women behind the bar at their holding bar or Cave across the street was a dream. She was pleasant and accommodating. The space is super, old parisian cool. We moved across the street to the restaurant and the servers were great, the food amazing ( we had the 7 course wine pairing menu). Here is where it goes down hill. While the food was excellent, diversified and tasty on so many levels and, frankly, the wine pairings were spot on ( I know a little about wine pairing by training), the self absorbed condescending attitude of the sommelier and the way he treated us by talking down to us when we asked the simplest of questions or tried to engage him in simple conversations such as "Where are you from?", "Where did you study wine?". Anything was met with a talking down, dismissive, attitude that didn't ruin the meal but made him having to come back 7 times an annoyance. Then of course, we knew we could afford to eat there and, short of being an employee, we knew he couldn't, so we could more easily dismiss him, than him us,. But for C sake, we are the customer. We weren't rude, we were inquisitive and a sommelier, like all servers in a restaurant, need to enhance the dinner's experience but I was totally put off and won't return
Be the first to Replynice lunch
Septime is among the most difficult places to book, not only in Paris but anywhere. I did not succeed in 2017 and 2019. This time we booked lunch, with three mobile phones and the help of a colleague all hitting the website at 9:59:59 am for a slot three weeks later. It was worth it. Lunch was extremely pleasant, with the surprise 5 course menu offering simply constructed but tasty dishes with harmonious flavours. The marinated raw scallops with yuzu, a dish with autumn mushrooms and a creamy almond flavoured broth and the dish main (merlan) were all very good. The winelist is almost entirely made up of organic and bio wines. The Greek wine as an apero was fine, the bottle of St-Aubin from H. Lamy very good... Service was efficient and fast but friendly. As was to be expected, the place was totally packed and many would-be lunchers turned away....
Be the first to ReplyZero cummunication
We tried to book a table at Septime. This is possible only 3 weeks in advance which, basically, is fine. There is an unsurmountable problem, however: No way to communicate via e-mail. Calling via phone is practically impossible (endless waiting until the connection breaks) and booking via website seems to be impossible, too. At 07:10 in the morning, 3 weeks before the anticipated date, no tables available. Too bad, could be bad luck. Underlying, however, is a major failure in communication. This is not the level of professionalism we would exptect from a restaurant that highly decorated.
Be the first to ReplyA lot to be desired
Went to the restaurant tonight with much anticipation. My husband and I were topping off our anniversary trip in Paris with Septime as the pièce de résistance. Honestly, this was so disappointing. We let them know that I didn’t eat fish, but would eat shellfish. I was thinking I would be getting meat or some other equivalent as a substitute for the fish inclusive items. I did not. I received pickled turnips and artichokes as the substitutes for tuna and another white fish that was served to my husband. I had maybe 3 oysters as my protein for the evening. The dishes were inventive and aromatic, but €110 is high for mostly vegetable items topped with sauces. I did enjoy the flavors with the wine pairings, but this is not the go to restaurant. We finished out dinner and was served dessert. After dinner our service basically ended. No one bothered to check in on us or even brought the check for about half an hour. Never even offered coffee. We were the first to arrive at the restaurant. We were treated much better at Frenchie and Mokonuts and their food was amazing.Feeling pretty upset over the whole “experience”.
Be the first to ReplyPaired Wines Need a Major Upgrade!
I’m really torn about this review. First, my wife stayed up until 1am on the U.S. west coast three weeks prior to make the reservation. But that’s the procedure and she was excited about dining at Septime for her birthday.
It was a 7-course dinner with paired wines and 6 of the 7 dishes were really quite good, creative and well-presented; there was only one dish that I didn’t care for.
But where the dinner really fell down was with the wine pairings. As noted in at least one other review, the wine selections were outright disappointing. Two of the seven wines came from Georgia (the country) and were practically undrinkable and another from some other country that I didn’t catch (or know of) and was similarly terrible. A fourth “wine” was actually a sour beer that had been fermented (or aged?) in wine barrels so I guess that qualified as a wine? The final wine, an Italian Passito, was served with a chocolate ganache dessert. An interesting pairing. The Passito was actually the only enjoyable wine of the night. My wife yearned for a glass of Port with that chocolate but no such luck. I guess that maybe I was expecting French wines? But silly me.
Anyway, I guess the lesson from tonight is don’t go with the wine pairing. The wines really detracted from my enjoyment of the food. (Fortunately my wife decided not to have the wines.) And because I trusted the quality of the paired wines, I didn’t peruse the wine list so I can’t comment on what’s there. They really need to upgrade the paired wine program (big time). I think that it’s a disservice to an otherwise fine (and pricey) restaurant.
Oh, and no need to dress up, it’s not a fancy place by any means.
Inventive Delicious and Worth the Effort
Wonderful experience - lunch. Inventive, fresh, delicious. The staff was on point, the dishes were super creative, and a pairing of mocktails was every bit as complementary as a traditional wine pairing. The staff knows their stuff. Tough table to get, but worth the work to procure the ressie.
Be the first to ReplyA bit uneven, but the hits are spectacular
Great restaurants in my opinion are about risk-taking. When you dare to do something different, sometimes it doesn't;t work, but when it does, the results can be quite magical. This is what I found at Septime.
After setting my alarm for 1:00AM in Los Angeles to call the restaurant precisely at 10AM, precisely three weeks before the day I wanted the reservation (yes, it's that difficult to get a table), of course expectations were high. When we got to the restaurant, we were actually pleasantly surprised by how laid back and informal the atmosphere was. This is not "Arpege-Fancy." This place reads more like a local neighborhood haunt that just happens to serve up some world-class cuisine.
We were sat at a nice table near the window, and immediately noticed that everyone in the open kitchen looked like they were just out of culinary school - in their early 20's. I had never seen such a young cook-staff. And the sommelier was also quite youthful, an American I think or Canadian based on his accent whose approach to wine was cleary as a disruptor. Nothing safe or predictable about his pairings AT ALL, which I found so refreshing
It's said that each of the senses can create an emotional reaction, including the sense of taste. I experienced this very thing. One course was so incredibly delicious it made me cry. The emotional experience, triggered by my taste buds, made for an unforgettable evening.
Beautiful
The experience was amazing from start to finish. The waiting staff were truly excellent, the food was next level and the restaurant felt stylish and relaxed. Really enjoyed the wine pairing and would definitely recommend opting for it. Would love to visit again someday.
Be the first to ReplyOverrated, underwhelming restaurant with terrible service
Really an underwhelming experience. The effort you have to go through to even eat here is obnoxious, with the precise opening of the reservation window 21 days in advance. It's not necessary, but it creates the idea of intense demand that the restaurant's hype is based on. I would have probably passed on it altogether because of the hefty deposit in case of no shows, but my wife insisted. There are far better restaurants in Paris that don't have this much fanfare and self-importance.
Nonetheless, on the day of the reservation, we were excited. The space looked amazing and cozy, and not stuffy like one might expect from this kind of restaurant. We tried their house champagne which was stellar, though not in and of itself, a reason to eat here (you can buy it at their wine shop down the street). It was cool that we didn't know what to expect from the meal. As the courses came, it became evident that it's because no one is dying to share pictures of their seaweed salad and an endive that is so bitter that even the server said she hated it. The piece de resistance was pigeon, which after our meager first few courses was kind of a slap in the face. There are restaurants in town serving up lobster, Wagyu beef, veal... So the markup on two salads and pigeon is kind of egregious. The dessert, which was olive oil ice cream, ricotta and citrus fruits was also bitter because of the blood orange. So overall the flavors weren't really doing it for me.
And while I can forgive something not exactly being my taste, the real reason for the 2 star review is that the service was unacceptable for what Michelin considers deserving of one star. If I'm going to a one-star restaurant, I expect the service to be consistently top tier. Instead, we had uneven pacing throughout the meal, with some delays between courses. And when we were done, having declined coffee or another glass of champagne, we waited 30 minutes before we were able to flag someone down for the bill. And then a further 10 minutes for them to come by with the card reader. By the end of the experience, I was pissed about the wait and realizing that I could have better spent my last meal in Paris at a host of other incredible restaurants in the same price range where I could have had high-end cuisine without the lackluster service.
Pass on this. If the people with backpacks eating here are any indication, this is just a tourist trap that draws people in because it's featured on the best whatever list. Not a single French person was dining there in the dozen or so tables in the restaurant. That's a big red flag!
Affordable and Comfortable for an Excellent Meal
Excellent meal and service for Americans in Paris. Went for lunch and did the tasting menu and wine pairing. Everything was great, especially the tuna dish. Really enjoyed the casual atmosphere for such a high end restaurant.
