Shanghai 21 New York Reviews from The Last Year

This place is phenomenal!! We visited last month while in the area. The gyoza, soup dumplings and hot and sour soup were all 5 star. Great service - fast and responsive. Tables were all clean and set. Can't wait to go back!

Service was great! We came at 8pm on a Wednesday night and got seated at 8:20pm. Kitchen closes at 8:45pm. We weren't rushed to order or leave, we had time to talk and eat. The food was good, it satisfied our cravings.
USED to be a good restaurant
USED to be a good restaurant. Now, much smaller portions, oily food. I ordered eggplant with chicken in brown sauce. Hard to find the chicken. No brown rice. They charge extra for white rice. Almost double price since covid. Will never return.

Best pork soup dumplings in Chinatown! I also ordered the sautéed rice cakes with pickled vegetable, crispy shredded beef and Shanghai sautéed noodles with pork. All the food was very flavorful. Service was very good, attentive waiters. Ambiance is clean and modern. Get there at 11:00am when they open. The restaurant fills up very quickly.

I came here for a birthday dinner with my family on a Sunday night. I said everyone was running late but they still let me sit down at a table in the back. We ordered the pork soup dumplings, the fried pork buns, the braised whole yellowfish, the salt and pepper pork chops, the lion's head meatballs, the shrimp in ginger and scallion sauce, the pea shoots, and the string beans. The salt and pepper pork chops and the shrimp were the best dishes. We brought a cake and they allowed it. The staff were super friendly and very accommodating, I would definitely come back!
We went to this restaurant for a quick bite to eat in NYC
We went to this restaurant for a quick bite to eat in NYC Chinatown. It was busy. The restaurant was clean and bright and well kept. The food was on par with all Americanized versions of Chinese food but it was obvious that the restaurant was catering to the tourists who were not willing to try the more authentic restaurants located in the area. It was a mainstream and stereotypical menu and the food was nothing any more special than we have had in other parts of the country that are serving food that non Asian patrons are used to and expecting. For the price the value was not there.
The dishes are mostly good.
The best dish we had is the dan dan mian and Spicy wontons - too sweet. Fried whole fish - too saucy and sweet.
There was so much to choose from on the menu.
I ordered the shrimp and pork lo mein that was delicious. The sauce wasn't heavy but very rich. We were a party of 8 and the restaurant accommodated us rather quickly on a Tuesday afternoon for lunch. The servers were efficient but not very friendly which was fine with me. This was definitely a "New York" experience as the restaurant was simple with no atmosphere. I would go back in a heart beat, but I am here in the city for a short time and want to try everything!

On our return visit to NY absolutely needed to visit Chinatown. We decided on Shanghai 21 and we were thrilled we did. They had a table to service all 8 of us!!! We were thrilled. The food and everyone chose varied items and since I couldn't hear what each person ordered I apologize. But plates were cleaned and everyone raved about their choices. I had the squid unfortunately the veggies were missing because I asked for no rice??????. My husband shared the bok choy on his plate of chicken lo mein. I did get a small side of bean sprouts I had asked for. The tea was delicious! The waiter was our only issue. He was not a very happy camper. Have no idea. We tried NOT to annoy for example I never said a word about my lack of veggies. Nor did we ask for any items extra etc. yes he was busy but he never smiled at us. The customers were into conversation and enjoying their meals so what more can you want. We would return but ask for another wait staff member.

I ordered takeout for the (6) soup dumplings with crab and pork. It took less than 10 minutes to receive our order, and the dumplings were great! I will say, at $10.50 for 6, there are likely some cheaper options in the area. However, it was still very solid
Soup dumplings .
Mike drop. Place is small and cramped but such an authentic experience. Service is super fast and not friendly like a good Chinatown restaurant should be.
Food was amazing and so good! Service was great.
For sure a must try while visiting NYC.
Solid food.
Go a little before or after lunch hour to get seated fast. Their lunch specials are a great value for money. Their vegan dumplings are great as well. If I go with a carnivore, this is the place. If I go with fellow vegans I prefer Bodhi.

There was a 20 minute wait when we got here midday on a Thursday in June and it did seem like it flew by pretty fast. We came strictly for the dumplings and for the most part they were pretty good, but didn't change my life. Perhaps all the instagram reels built it up way too much. The vegetable spring rolls were pretty basic but were served hot and crispy. The only dumplings I didn't particularly care for were the tiny fried pork buns. It was just really doughy for me but the meat inside was seasoned nicely. The shrimp dumplings were an example of something really simple being really ethereal and delicious. Take a bite of those and drop in some of their soy ginger sauce inside and enjoy! But the real game changer was the Szechuan wontons. Pretty spicy but epically delicious. Big flavors and super punchy! You have to order this! That's all I got. Hope you like it!
Best Chinese food experience we had in Chinatown. Loved it. Good value with fair prices.
We only had a 20 min wait to be offered back in to sit down so that was good. My mum and I had chicken and black bean plate with rice. It was fantastic. All full of flavour and no chilli which we don't like, so yeah, very good flavour. The chicken, rice and peppers were so good. Best one I've had to be honest. My wife had a large plate of vegatables with noodles, but what took her by surprise was the fact that half of the noodles were in fact crispy and she didn't like those, when she prefers soft noodles. Disappointing as the menu didn't state this either so the crispy noodles were wasted. Overall my mum and I loved it and my wife would try something else and we'd come back here for sure. Very nice food and good people.
Walked in.
No reservations. 20-25 min wait time. Fast service. Nice employees. Clean bathrooms. Chairs not too comfy. Ordered Coke (only in cans), sesame chicken, hot and sour soup, scallion pancakes, and Dry Sauteed Shredded Beef. Food was amazing. Very large portions. Does not come with white rice to eat with entree. Must order separately.
I came here with a group of friends for lunch.
It was quite busy, and the space was a little tight, but we were seated in booth seating fairly quickly. My table decided to order family style. We shared Scallion Pancake, Crispy Fish in sweet and sour sauce, Pan Fried Noodles with shrimp and beef, as well as Crab Meat and Pork Soup Dumplings. Scallion Pancake was delightfully crispy and light, not too oily, with strong scallion taste. The Crispy Fish had pineapple, corn, peas, along with red and green peppers in the sauce. Traditionally, this dish would include roasted pine nuts and no pineapple. The fish was satisfyingly crunchy, flaky, and the sauce was well seasoned with a nice balance of sweet and savory. I also enjoyed the Pan Fried Noodles, which came a generous helping of beef, shrimp, chicken, as well as bok choy, mushroom, and baby corn. The noodles were cooked perfectly and the bottom of them were wonderfully crisp. Shrimp was succulent and juicy, while the beef and chicken were tender and flavorful. The veggies were fresh and everything was covered in a yummy brown sauce. Soup dumplings were not the best. There was barely any soup inside and the skin was way too thick. There was a decent amount of filling though and the combination of crab and pork was at least appetizing. For dessert, I had the Sesame Rice Ball in wine soup. In Chinese, this is known as Tang Yuan and it's one of my favorite sweet treats. The rice ball has a sticky exterior with black sesame inside. This was made well and oozed with delicious black sesame paste, making for mouthwatering bites. Service was pretty good. Our waitress was efficient and everything came out in a timely manner. Overall, everyone seemed to like the food and we had a lovely meal here. Also, the pricing was very reasonable and the portions were large. I would be open to returning to try the Crispy Duck, Shrimp entree, and Rice Cake.

We met up with a friend who wanted to explore Manhattan's Chinatown. She picked Shanghai 21. She ordered and she ordered quite the spread. 2 orders of soup dumplings, 2 orders of shumai, squid in oyster sauce, I think, garlic snow peas, a fish, pork fried rice, a noodle dish, and a beef noodle soup. There was 5 of us! Lol, but I love that she ordered things that we wouldn't normally order with just the 4 of us like the snow peas. Soup dumplings were average. Shumai was average. I liked the squid. First time having snow peas like that. I loved them, although they were kinda sweet. I was thinking more of a oyster sauce and garlic deal like on chinese broccoli. The pork fried rice was so good. My favorite on the whole table besides the snow peas. The spicy beef noodle soup was good. Got it for my son, cuz he loves Taiwanese Beef Noodle soup, but I forgot we weren't at a Taiwanese restaurant. I just saw Beef noodle soup and my mind went there. Whoops. Anyway, I'm not sure if I would be back, but it was a decent place.
Amazing place to try some Shanghainese food.
Buns were extremely soft, dumplings tasted fresh and the spice level for general tso's chicken was perfect. Servers were friendly, and super quick.
A satisfied customer
Excellent! Everything was fresh and came piping hot. I would recommend the Shanghai hot and sour soup. Made to order, it was filled with lots of fresh vegetables. The staff was professional and friendly and very accommodating. They let you linger until you were ready to leave.
Give it a try!
What's with the negative comments about the food? We went here for dinner..had to wait in line, that is fine. Clientele was a mix of tourists and locals, I think. Ordered soup dumplings. SOOO good. Almost as good as what I remember from another local restaurant that has since gone downhill. Son ordered the duck, which came in some sort of plum sauce. This was delicious and VERY RICH, so it would have been hard for me to have as an entree. Husband and I chose the Shanghai style low mein. DELICIOUS. I was pretty nosy and kept looking at the other dishes going out of the kitchen. Everything looked amazing (and I appreciated the fact that there was plenty of shrimp in the low mein; it wasn't just weighed down with vegetables). Only glitch was that we had to ask another server for our check because our server disappeared and we sat with empty plates waiting to be cleared for over 20 minutes. I'd still come back.
Food not good. High prices, low quality
Food was poor do not recommend. One of the few restaurants that look ok from the outside but not a good choice. Full of tourists and service staff were unfriendly

Food was great and definitely worth the wait, which was half hour and I was told it would be.

Food was amazing, glad we found this restaurant, the wait was worth it. I forgot to take pictures of the rest of the food, but everything was delicious.

Food was on point, liked the salt and pepper calamari, pork fried rice, kung pow pork and low main. Would def recommend and will be back again, restaurant was small and at 1:30 on a Wednesday we got last table. Worked out great.
Stumbled upon this place while exploring China town.
The hot and sour soup hit the spot since it was so cold outside, it had plenty of bamboo shoots, mushrooms and tofu. It was delicious! The soup dumplings had lots of pork and crab meat and were very filling. The wrapper was on the harder side and the skin still ripped easily so you have to be very careful when picking it up. Service was very quick and the inside of the restaurant was clean and it was nice to sit and eat.
In the center of Chinatown
In the center of Chinatown, even though it was a Tuesday evening we had to wait about 20 minutes, so I imagine it is much busier on weekends or during tourist periods. I personally got the pork dumplings (D4 if I'm not mistaken) and the shrimp and pork noodles (T8). Either way they were good. Advised

One of the best spots in the city! Great service, fresh and amazing tasting food! The shengjian bao and the Szechuan shredded beef are a MUST TRY!!!
Absolutely delicious Shanghai noodles, saucy and loaded
Absolutely delicious Shanghai noodles, saucy and loaded with unctuous umami! The salt and pepper shrimp were served literally seconds from the deep frier, crisp, fresh, hot and not greasy! The sautéed greens in garlic were some of the best I've ever tasted with a marvelous sauce of garlic and soy. Service was fabulous- the host over delivered by telling us wait time about 30 minutes was actually only 20. Our order arrived to our table nicely timed with each dish seconds from the wok! Fun green colors on the photo screens made the vibe energized and fun! Judging from the smiles on the diners, Shanghai 21 is a top dining spot for Chinese Cuisine!
Great food and consistent.
Know what you're going to get and the price point is okay.
Can't go wrong when you eat here.
Everytime I'm in Chinatown I stop here for string beans and soup dumplings. Very straight and to the point if it's not packed, but if it's packed I know it's gonna be a 15 minute wait which is fine, I just get a moon cake from the bakery around the corner or grab a bubble tea from the next street over. Food is always tasty and the service is always fast and they don't harass you to get out once you're done like some spots. Always take ppl here if they are visiting me and want to see Chinatown. Only thing I'll say is that over the years the skin on the soup dumplings are getting a bit thin and can sometimes be a bit overcooked to the point where when you lift the soup dumpling from the steamer basket they stick and once pulled fall apart. Other than that, again you can't go wrong here.
Good food.
Service a bit surly. Ambiance is harried and super busy. Come here for the food.
Not sure how or why I haven't left this place a review.
I've been going here for years, even before their now name of Shanghai 21. I've always had a good experience while here, with the staff being great consistently and enjoying what we have ordered off the menu. It's gotten busier and busier, solely based on my last few visits to this establishment. If you come in during a prime eating hour, definitely expect to wait for at least a little but. They serve water on the table, and you're ready to roll once you're sat at the table. Take a look at the menu, and there are plenty of options to choose from. Over the years, I've tried quote a few items and can't remember having a poor experience. I'll continue to keep coming here in the future. Unless the quality goes completely downhill, I'll continue to patronize their business. Do note: there is now a service charge automatically put on the bill.
Good, clean, accepts debit cards
Restaurant with oriental cuisine located in the Chinatown neighborhood of Manhattan. Given the positive reviews we decided to try it and we did well. It is very clean, which is important if you decide to eat in Chinatown. One of the few restaurants in Chinatown that accepts electronic payments. Very importantly, it is advisable to book. We waited 1 hour to be seated. Good food. Correct prices.
Great choice
Great kitchen. Fast service, clean and very tasty. A large selection of dishes on the menu. Definitely recommend further. 👍
To do
You have to be patient and ignore the color of the walls but the food is very good and the service is fast. The establishment is very successful so there is a bit of a wait.
Just great 2nd visit
We tried for lunch and the wait was very short and the service and food was just as great. Truly a gem amongst a ton of average Chinese.
In the heart of Chinatown
Delicious Chinese specialties in the heart of Chinatown. Be careful of the portions which are very large :-)
Endless Chinese cuisine!!
Great place serving authentic Chinese cuisine. The options were endless. It looked like many patrons were paying with cash, and I regret not finding out if we could’ve saved some money by paying cash instead of credit card. But either way, great food, I’ll come back again.
Great fight in Chinatown
By chance we came to this site after receiving a recommendation. It is actually very good with a mix of oriental flavors. I recommend it
Nothing special
Nothing special. Good pork ravioli in soup. Spring rolls a little oily. The beef fried rice however was disappointing. The rice was not crunchy and the beef was soggy. Very generous portion but not exciting.
Ave food cheap prices
Read the reviews and tried it out. Short 10 minute wait on a Thurs At 4p. Ordered a variety of appetizers (4 total): soups, dumplings, egg rolls. They were average at best. Same ole can be found at any restaurant. The best thing was it was cheap for NYC standards. $30. No alcohol is available. They do take credit cards on a $20 minimum.

This app is a catfish and overrun by people programming “bots” and algorithms. It makes it frustrating for someone not well versed in this to have any movement. I thought this would be a fun side hustle, but unfortunately it’s become like any other “side hustle”. Don’t waste your time with this crap. Not a question, just a suggestion. Also don’t pay these fake “gurus” hundreds of dollars to teach you. Might as well sign up for a software class. 😕

Might depend on what market you're in? Some have not been developed yet and some are still growing. Make some reservations ahead of time and post them for sale and get ahead of the bot bids? IDK.

I totally agree with you. I’ve had the same thought and issues. But there’s no way to stop it as far as I know, unfortunately. I was worried this was going to happen and apparently it has😞
