4/5 by ๐Ÿ‘ป @Adrienne O. on 09/12/2025

We usually get our Dim Sum in San Fran, NYC or Los Angeles, but we had to try out a few places in Chicago. Shanghai Terrace was recommended so we gave it a shot. The ambiance was lovely, great views of the surrounding buildings, nice breeze and patio set up. All in all it was super solid though the selection was limited, we enjoyed what we did get. Steamed Pork Dumpling Shanghai Style, Lobster And Chicken Dumpling With Black Truffle, Spicy Beef Pot Sticker, Crab Siewmai With Fish Roe, & SteameVegetable Dumplingd Pork Dumpling Shanghai Style. All were very tasty and enjoyable. The one disappointing meal was the Wok Fried Scallop In Black Truffle Sauce-such delicious flavors with the most bland, oddly chewy (we are die hard Scallops lovers) and overall tasteless scallops. The drinks were solid and the service was good.

I love love love this place! The service is top tier and the menu is amazing. Located inside the Peninsula hotel, this is a beautiful restaurant for lunch or dinner. The outside seating is gorgeous and you feel like you are out of town. The inside is also very beautiful. I love the potstickers and the fried rice. They also have amazing mocktails! One of my favorites is the virgin ning sling!!

My boss and his significant other were staying here so we tagged along and enjoyed a tasty meal with them one evening! We tried every dessert on the menu and while I can't remember the name of any of them - they were all delicious haha - you really can't go wrong if you choose something that your palate will enjoy. I will say the cookie platter was fun and I liked the coffee tasting one the best. There's also another dessert with some sort of strawberry gelatin that I loved. One of my coworkers and I split the Shanghai Terrace Three Treasures Fried Rice along with the Spicy Crispy Beef and omg YUM, I highly recommend. I also enjoyed the lychee martini I had. Great ambiance, amazing service and food - if you're in the mood for some quality and delicious Chinese food, I'd definitely recommend trying them out.

Lovely food and service, in a great location

5/5 by ๐Ÿ‘ป @Gabriel H on 06/24/2025

This is one of the restaurants at the Peninsula hotel. Located several floors above street level, it offers indoor and outdoor seating. Service is careful, helpful and effective. The menu is based on Chinese culinary creations and everything it offers is perfectly done and beautifully presented. Our favorite selection was the Peking duck: done to perfection and served with the classical accoutrements. The wine selection is quite good, especially for an Asian restaurant.

The food here was SO good and the presentation was impressive. We weren't too hungry so we only ordered two dishes and sides of steamed rice. We had the bok choy and the tofu with lotus root. Prettiest veggies I've ever seen haha! These were light and delectable. The tofu dish was pretty gingery which we really appreciated. Our lunch felt healthy and yet tasty. At first I thought this was pricy for dim sum but this is an upscale restaurant and our meal definitely reflected that. Would love to come back and try some of the non vegetarian options. Wish I'd taken pictures! You'll have to trust me on this one.

Really enjoyed dining here - I was in Chicago for a work trip and decided to dine here since I wanted a warm comforting meal. Dumplings are my comfort food and the dumplings here did not disappoint! Service is quick and my server was so sweet. She had some great recommendations. Their ambiance is quite intriguing with a lot of antiques as carved walls. On the pricier side but recommend!

I am very happy to know that this restaurant continues to deliver with consistency - on all aspects of a good dining out experience such as service (excellent, both at hostess stand and at the table), to menu options (pretty good selection for vegetarians), to, of course, the actual flavors of all the dishes (absolutely wonderful), to the cocktails and - last but not the least - the ambiance (stylish, elegant, upscale). I continue to love this place!

Had a 7:30pm dinner reservation for 2 on a Thursday evening.

5/5 by ๐Ÿ‘ป @Gina L. on 04/01/2025

A bit of a journey to find the restaurant, but we love an impromptu scavenger hunt. We saw many fellow Asian diners, so it has the seal of approval! Our waiter was very friendly and outgoing, as he gave us suggestions and dish descriptions. There was another lady who helped us out, very attentive and friendly. A couple times they stopped by to ask the same questions take orders, which is fine considering the alternative is under-attentiveness. Drinks: Started with a couple drinks ($24 each): Lost in Shanghai (vodka, lychee, grapefruit, Cassis drop) and Hello Sunshine (vodka, passionfruit, basil, lime) - liked the latter better. Meal: Ordered the $88pp duck experience 3-course prix fixe, as well as the stir-fried veggies. Prix fixe included: 1) duck spring roll + duck foie gras dumpling - both tasty, but the dumpling was amazing. Foie gras in a dumpling is seriously a crime because it's so good. 2) half portion of duck - was sliced in "more skin" vs "less skin" manner. Not exactly like Beijing/Peking duck where the skin and meat a separated. However, duck itself was good, quite lean, but flavorful. 3) duck fried rice - generous portions of fried rice. We ended up taking most of this home, but ample sprinkling of duck. Desserts: Rotating assortment of desserts (always with an Asian theme). We ordered the: Strawberry pudding (??) - forgot the actual name, but was a delicate strawberry putting atop a pastry crust. Mango coconut pudding - very tasty, a chilled pudding that soon liquifies as it comes to room temp. Fantastic mango flavor. Chocolate cake - complimentary as we were celebrating a birthday. Came with a cute chocolate plaque with "็”Ÿๆ—ฅๅฟซไน" and a candle. Enjoyed the other desserts more, but a nice touch. Finished with a couple pours of dessert wine. $300 pre-tip, but left with plenty of leftovers. Wish the duck had separate skin/meat, but overall, top-notch and upscale atmosphere for Chinese food.

Superb experience from beginning to end.

5/5 by ๐Ÿ‘ป @Susan S on 03/03/2025

We were 6 people and had a table with a beautiful view. The menu had a wide variety and it all sounded so good. We ordered a lot of different dishes. Highlights for me were the eggplant, the shredded beef, and the steamed halibut...but it was all very very good. The staff is very attentive and charming. It is expensive and has a bit of a party atmosphere but not too loud. The tables are well spaced apart from each other. Highly recommended for locals and out of town guests too. Delicious, well-prepared, interesting food....a far cry from a typical neighborhood Chinese restaurant.

Wonderul meal but was given back someone else's credit card! Huge inconvenience around the Holidays as I had to cancel card and get a new one from Amex. When contacted the restaurant, recieved a phone call apologizing but also contacted the hotel to discuss my HUGE inconvenience and received one attempt of a call back! You would think a hotel, restaurant of this caliber of the Penninsula would offer some gesture for my inconvenience. Lesson learned...always check your card when returned after being processed!

Shanghai terrace is an upscale restaurant in the Pennisula

5/5 by ๐Ÿ‘ป @Clarissa H. on 11/01/2024

Shanghai terrace is an upscale restaurant in the Pennisula hotel. It was too cold to sit on their patio, but it looks like it would be really pretty in the summer. The waiter was extremely attentive and even helped make sugggestions from the menu, since I was eating vegetarian and my friend was not, but we still wanted to share some dishes. I was really happy to see they had a lot of vegetarian options on the menu! My favorite thing we ordered was the crispy tofu with salt and pepper. They fried soft tofu, so the outside was light and crispy and the inside melted in your mouth. The dish was filled with chili, garlic, and puffed rice which I could have eaten an entire bowl of. I think this fried tofu dish is a contender for the best fried tofu in the city. We also ordered crab rangoons, the braised eggplant, the scallops, and a side of rice. I loved how tender the braised eggplant was! This is a great spot if you're looking for an upscale dinner. I want to come back in the summer to eat on their patio!

First night in Chicago and I heard this was the best place

5/5 by ๐Ÿ‘ป @Christopher H. on 10/18/2024

First night in Chicago and I heard this was the best place to eat Chinese food in the city. Once you get to The Peninsula it can be a bit difficult to find but staff are everywhere to help you find whatever restaurant you are looking for in the building and there are many. We were able to sit outside and with it being a beautiful 70 degree Chicago night, it could not have been more ideal. We started out with Rangoons and dumplings. The Rangoons are the best I have ever had. The menu is small and fairly uncomplicated but it all looked so good that I definitely had a tough time deciding. Wine selection is pretty decent here. The girls said this was the best desserts that they had the whole week so definitely save room for that as I wasn't anticipating anyone in our group wanting that and did not save any room. We were near the bar and our server/bartender was very attentive even though the bar was staying fairly active. Since we had been traveling the restaurant not only accommodated our luggage but also got us a table early. Just another great display of Chicago hospitality that we saw throughout the week.

This review is way over-due, I have been very busy lately,

5/5 by ๐Ÿ‘ป @Kitty L. on 10/09/2024

This review is way over-due, I have been very busy lately, but writing a good review feels like an obligation to me. We celebrated our adult daughter's birthday for the third time at the Shanghai Terrace, it has been going so well that it has become a tradition! It was amazing that the manager Yushi and the staff took notice and remembered as well! They had said "Happy Birthday" to Daughter many times! The hospitality and impeccable service were just second to none! We love their beautiful outdoor dining area; however, it was a rainy night and we had to dine in their indoor restaurant instead. The interior was elegant and beautiful. Our table at the end of the semi-private room had added privacy. The room can be closed off as a private party room if needed. My only complaint was the straight wooden back of the chairs were not very comfortable. A thin cushion probably would be helpful. This time we still ordered our favorite dishes, namely Crab Siewmai with Fish Roe, Lobster and Chicken Dumpling with Black Truffle, Shrimp Spring Roll for dim sum appetizers, and half order of Peking Duck, Chilean Sea Bass in Traditional Szechwan Sauce, Kung Pao Chicken, Seafood Fried Rice in Abalone Sauce, and Shanghai Fried Noodle. Hubby and Daughter had ordered two glasses of Hubert Brochard white wine, while I ordered the non-alcoholic "Fre" white wine. Like last year, we did not order desserts as we had a birthday cake at home from our favorite bakery. Paula, our pleasant and friendly server, brought out a complimentary piece of birthday cake with a lit candle and chocolate plaque with the words "Happy Birthday" to our daughter. She also let each of the three of us order a dessert from their dessert menu on the house (all desserts were $15 each)! She recommended the Peninsula Mango Pudding and the Strawberry Passion Cake. Hubby and I got the mango pudding and Daughter go the strawberry passion cake. All the desserts were excellent, it was very generous of the restaurant to comp them! We had ordered a box of the Mini Egg Custard Mooncakes ($118 plus tax) to be picked up at the Shanghai Terrace. I emailed their manager Yushi about the pickup a week prior, he had such great memory and courtesy, and personally delivered the box of mooncakes to our table when we were finishing eating. We were happy that he had some time to chat with us. It turned out that Yushi came directly from the Peninsula Tokyo! He was very nice and friendly and we enjoyed talking with him. When we went downstairs to pick up our car from valet parking, since it was during the week of the national convention and many streets were closed, they had a female staff walking us to a garage close by. She went to pick up our car in the garage while we waited in the sidewalk. Like always, all levels of the Peninsula staff were very nice and polite. Each visit of the Shanghai Terrace was very enjoyable. Like I have said in my previous reviews, if Shanghai Terrace was located in the Northern suburbs, we would patronize very often for sure! (Just a note about the Peninsula mini mooncakes: they are excellent after reheating with the microwave for about 15 seconds!)

The Peninsula group is one of the top destinations in Asia.

2/5 by ๐Ÿ‘ป @Eddy T. on 04/21/2024

Its restaurants in most parts of the world have quality and exquisite standards. However, the ST in Peninsula Chicago is the brand's most disappointing restaurant. When I was there, the only dish that met the usual Peninsula standard was the Peking Duck. Other dishes such as dumplings, Chinese-style beef (ไธญๅผ็‰›ๆŸณ), and even fried rice were all sub-standards. Based on each dish's price, none of them were worth it. I used to frequent the restaurants in PH in Hong Kong before I moved here. I thought I would be treated to the taste of HK, but the experience was unsatisfactory, and I shall save my next visit to the real treat when I am back visiting HK.

5/5 by ๐Ÿ‘ป @Raju L. on 02/20/2024

Of course, Shanghai Terrace has gotta be top notch as it's part of the Peninsula Group right? I gotta say though this go round, top notch feels like an understatement. Been here several times before and have been wanting to go again several times in the past year and a half but kept having to cancel our reservations till one day we didn't. The service aspect was exceptional. I've never had any problems with service here but this time, they made what has already been fantastic service into exceptional. See, in the past while the service has always been top notch, there has always been this very slight robotic character to it; not this time. This time, their service did not feel robotic at all. They were very engaged, made fantastic recommendations and took care of us really well. The food I mean; there's nothing not to like about it. We had some vegetable dumplings which were simply out of this world. We had a salad which was terrific. We ordered the happy rice (God I need to find out which region of China that comes from and get a recipe. It is GOOOOOOOD) and the noodles with all the meats which too was just amazing. The only thing that was not on mark was the crispy tofu. The first round that came was a little undercooked so we had to send it back. While the second time was cooked right, the outer layer seemed very different than what they have done in the past. The seasoning was a bit off and the outer layer was just thicker and crispier. Other than that though, this place rocks.

Located in the terrace area of The Peninsula, they look out to the mag mile at a distance that mutes the noise level Indoor seating also available, but their furnishing feels a bit worn (dinnerware too). Food is solid. My fav part is that you can order Peking duck in half portions. Dimsum is fine - wouldn't say it's life changing. Is it the best Chines food you'll find? Located in the Peninsula hotel on Superior, Shanghai

5/5 by ๐Ÿ‘ป @Claire L. on 11/12/2023

Located in the Peninsula hotel on Superior, Shanghai Terrace is an upscale Chinese restaurant that features a variety of Chinese dishes on the menu, set in a dining room with a classy, vintage 20th century atmosphere. The service is impeccable and the staff were super attentive to anything our party needed. We started off with the golden shrimp appetizer, which was perfectly crispy and came with a delicious walnut sauce. The main course I selected was the dong po pork belly, which was meticulously prepared in a pyramidal/pagoda-like structure. The pork belly slices were razor thin and melted in your mouth (I would have preferred the pork belly to be a little less fatty, but the flavor was good regardless). And finally for dessert, I had the yuzu mousse, which was a refreshing, citrusy way to cut the heaviness from all the pork belly I had earlier. The mojitos were also excellent and accompanied the dishes well. Would highly recommend and definitely looking forward to my next visit!

I really liked this place. We were hoping for some late night outdoor dining but the night we were there the weather was rough. But inside was pretty elegant. Understand this restaurant is part of a hotel building which was very elegant and we spent time actually exploring some of the public areas which you can see in my pictures. One important point. I felt way underdressed in shorts and a tee. This place is pretty dressy which makes it a good spot for a special date and not ideal for kids but I'm sure they are welcome. Over-rated, Underperformed

1/5 by ๐Ÿ‘ป @Quest00231254021 on 03/27/2023

Read many good reviews about the food and services of this exclusive restaurant. Here is my totally disappointed review. My family of five arrived on time for our 5 pm reservation. The hostess greeted us warmly and led us to our table immediately. Impressed with the first service encounter until later I saw she offered other guests to take their overcoats to be hung in the coat check-in closet. Maybe she was preoccupied and forgot about her task. After we were seated the waiter came and warmly greeted us and provided the essentials to begin our meal experience. We ordered four dim sum plates and the food was excellently prepared and tasted above expectations. The Peking Duck (full portion) presented well but the slices of meat were cut much too thick from what I've expected from my over hundred previous experiences around the world. Otherwise, the duck tasted about as expected. Of the four other dishes weโ€™ve ordered, two (Monk Jumps Over the Wall and Chili Prawn) were prepared and tasted wonderful. However, the other two dishes, Dongpo Pork Belly, and Braised Eggplant Szechwan Style were speechlessly disappointing. Dongpo Pork is an iconic traditional Chinese braised pork belly dish. The pork belly, if itโ€™s done correctly, is so tender it will just melt in your mouth. It should be a truly mouth-watering experience dish. However, the Shanghai Terrace Dongpo pork is nothing like the iconic Chinese Dongpo braised pork belly Iโ€™ve tasted hundreds of times in the past. It is more or less wrapped bacon braised in a salty sauce. I believe the person who prepared this dish should have learned how to make this dish just by doing a quick search on the YouTube topic โ€œHow to Cook Dongpo Pork.โ€ The second disappointment was the Braised Eggplant Szechwan Style. Again, this is a simple Chinese dish you could order from any mom-and-pop Chinese restaurant and be happy with the dish. Somehow, the person who prepared this dish failed miserably. The dish was very salty and sweet and too much starch was used in the sauce to make it pasty instead saucy. The eggplant, instead of a buttery tender taste was gooey and mushy.

I have been to shanghai many times. I have ordered the fried rice , the hot and spicy soup and the shaomai and the fried egg plant. It costed me about $110 with tips. The fried rice is worth it. The rest is just normal. I may have ordered the wrong dish at the restaurant as well. Hot and spicy soup and the fried eggplant are both sichuanese food and shaomai is more like Cantonese. So may be can't blame them. Don't see a lot of choices of old style Shanghainese food.

No. Definitely a special occasion spot. The beef and scallops were so tender and out of this world. If you're looking for a beautiful date night, this is your place.

The terrace was so beautiful and fancy! The color red is everywhere and I felt like the space was evenly spread out so that people weren't sitting too close to one another. I sat at the bar while waiting for my table and the bartender was so nice. I got the mapo tofu which was so good but spicy, the duck dimsum, and bulgogi fried rice. Would def go back.Oh and they even gave us blankets bc we were shivering!!

The soup dumplings are a must. The vegetarian dumplings were great. I loved the fried rice. Had a great crunch to it. The service was great and the ambiance is great for a special occasion or date night.

The space is beautiful. The service is impeccable and we were seated right away. We got the Peking duck and really enjoyed it. The flavors were rich but not over powering or heavy. The experience was fantastic.

The noodles, the rice, the vegetable sides will all blow your mind. This place is a bit overly expensive. Service can be a tiny bit slow sometimes. You've got to come here!!!!

Connect with users posting reservations for Shanghai Terrace Chicago

AppointmentTrader is a community-driven platform where users can exchange their reservations or leverage their personal relationships with Shanghai Terrace Chicago. Buyers can make informed decisions using automated seller ratings, which reflect past transactions and reliability.

Each posting on AppointmentTrader shows you which user submitted it and along with that provides a trackrecord of that user which indicates how much experience the user has and how many percent of their transactions resulted in them issuing a refund.

If there is no user posting that fits your schedule, you can bid on your preferred time.

Let's say Peter has a great morning and decides to take his three friends to Shanghai Terrace Chicago at 6 PM the same day.

He checks the restaurant's website and sees that no reservations are available. He then looks at the Shanghai Terrace Chicago page on AppointmentTrader, but finds that there are no user postings either.

That's where the community-driven bid process comes in.

Peter can place a bid on AppointmentTrader, which serves as a reward for any community member who chooses to work on securing the reservation. AT then notifies experienced users who may be able to help.

Step-by-Step Process
1.) Setting a Reward (Bid)
* AppointmentTrader uses historical data to recommend a reasonable reward amount for securing a reservation - let's say $100.
* Peter really wants to go, so he increases the bid (or reward) to $200.
* At this stage, the reservation does not exist yet.

2.) A Community User Picks Up the Bid
* FulfilledThread16, an experienced AT user, has a strong track record of successfully securing reservations and low refund requests, they receive a notification about Peter's bid.
* FulfilledThread16 picks up the bid, meaning they will now work on securing the reservation.
* Peter can now talk to FulfilledThread16 for any questions Peter may have as FulfilledThread16 user fills the bid.

3.) Finding the Reservation
* FulfilledThread16 now uses their connections at Shanghai Terrace Chicago to secure the table.
* If they successfully get the 6 PM table for four, Peter receives a confirmation that the reservation has been secured.
* If FulfilledThread16 fails to secure the reservation, the bid is returned to the pool so another user can try.

4.) Payment & Protection
* Once the reservation is secured, FulfilledThread16 receives the $200 reward which is credited to FulfilledThread16's AT balance, where users manage their own funds and can withdraw via available payout options such as bank transfer, PayPal, or Zelle.
* Peter can now enjoy the dinner with his friends at Shanghai Terrace Chicago!
* As with all transactions on AT, disputes and no-show fees are handled through the platform's community-driven resolution system. Users with a strong track record are incentivized to fulfill bids successfully, and community members can report issues to maintain trust in the marketplace.
