Shokudou Ogawa Kyoto Reviews from The Last Year
Service is minimal unless you ask.
It's a remodeled place with a variety of options. The beef skewers at $12 for 2 were a bit too cooked & a bit tough to chew on the texture with lots of salt. The hamachi roll was ok, but nothing stood out about it. Overall, it's an average place if you're in the area if you want sake and beer with high savory intake.
This place is perfect for parties of any sizes.
The staff were able to rearrange tables and got us seated fast-- surprisingly, we all fit comfortably! Both the rainbow and double hamachi rolls tastes fresh and were refreshing to eat. However, they felt pretty small and didn't come with much flavor besides the raw fish. The rice also tasted unseasoned and dry. It was quite disappointing. Although the rolls lacked in some qualities, I would come back (for sashimi)! If you're looking for a place that serves good appetizers and quality fish, I would recommend Shokudou. Hope this was helpful!
I have eaten izakaya and sushi on four continents over 30
I have eaten izakaya and sushi on four continents over 30 years, and this is sooo good! My husband is not a fish fan, so I have only three experiences here, when I had the opportunity to go my own way for dinner. Each was stellar. Tonight I had tuna poke and miso for an appetizer, and the miso grilled butterfish with the Flame Toro roll (spicy tuna/seared fatty tuna with pickled wasabi) for my main. The fish is very fresh and the flavors are undeniable. I've had a couple of the izakaya options on previous occasions, and particularly enjoyed the wagyu wrapped enoki. Small quibble...the fatty tuna tonight wasn't really seared, or at least that flavor didn't come through, but the miso grilled butterfish took me right back to Roy's restaurants on Guam, Oahu and here in SF. I will be back on a regular basis. Excellent. And it's a five minute walk from our house!
Absolutely DELICIOUS.
Sean our server was so nice, attentive and knowledgeable. The layout was great, very open. We had the Bernal Roll, drum stick Katsu, Tori Karaage. Star of our order was the Tori Karaage, so good we ordered seconds. Can't wait to come back and try more of the menu.
Went here for lunch.
ambience reminds me of an average sushi place. I was hoping for Izakaya, but most of their grilled skewers are not available for lunch. What we ordered: Cucumber salad - I liked how they did thinly sliced edges so that the sauce went in. It was tasty! I love cucumber salad, so no complaints here. Hamachi kama - we got two small collarbones, and I would say it was not bad, but maybe a little bit overcooked. The sauce did overpower a little bit of the flavor. Decent, but nothing special. spider rainbow roll - I like this combination of a spider roll and sashimi on top. It was good, but I would say the fish is not that fresh. double Hamachi roll - decent, but again fish just isn't that fresh. Sashimi - the tuna was good, not to be redundant, but I just wish the fish was fresher. Black sesame cheesecake with coconut ice cream - I liked it! The cheesecake was a little bit on the thicker side, but the black sesame flavor came through and paired well with the coconut ice cream. overall, decent place. I just wish there was more Izakaya options during lunch as well because that's what I was curious about. Fish is not the freshest, but if you're looking for a quick sushi fix, this is not a bad place if you're in the area. I wouldn't come out of my way to check it out though. Staff was friendly and quick.

Amazing! The fish was SO fresh, we felt guilty adding soy sauce. We had the Tuna Poke appetizer, Daikon salad with sweet chili dressing, a roll with salmon on top, and bacon wrapped mushrooms. All were fantastic. The presentation of each plate was lovely. My apologies for not taking pictures until after we started eating. LOL. We had never been to the Bernal Heights neighborhood in San Francisco. (We live in San Jose.) We would definitely come back for Shokudou! Great service. Family friendly, locals vibe.

Stopped by this place for lunch over the weekend and the food exceeded my expectations. I saw they had a lunch special so we went to check it out and I picked their lunch set that came with a mini chirashi and butterfish misoyaki. The star of this meal was the butter fish misoyaki, it was soooo good. Perfectly seasoned and cooked, the fish was so buttery and flaky, probably the best cooked fish I've ever had lol. The chirashi was also really yummy too. Definitely will come back just to get the butterfish misoyaki.

making frequent trips to sf to shop for furniture and lights in the area...stopping by shokudou for lunch on a friday...fairly empty, but some customers...seated and lunch menu provided...pleasantly surprised by the reasonable prices...most items were under $20...lunch for two and taking a lunch a combination for $18 and a nigiri set $20 to start...requesting to keep the menu to order a 3rd meal to share after we started on our first orders...both lunches served with miso soup to start...lunch a arriving with a mini-chirashi bowl and a sweet glazed butterfish...chirashi bowl came with 4 basic slices of standard sashimi..the fish was fresh and just lovely...melts in your mouth...the butterfish was a great contrast with bold sweet and strong flavors covering the smooth velvety fish...very delicious...the nigiri set was also very basic, but fresh and simple...knowing we had room for more, ordered the katsu-don $17...sweet and savory flavor bomb...ultra thick cut of pork battered and fried covered by egg to soften the batter...really filling and big...overall, the food quality was excellent and prices were great...
Ordered Uber Eats.
Restaurant took almost an hour to wrap up my order and the portions ended up being shockingly small. I've never had rolls so tiny and skinny before. We ordered two rolls and two nigiri sets and it was basically an appetizer. Had to make ramen to make up for it and spent over $100.

Homey place with delicious food! Loved the skewers - wonderful, smokey, grilled flavors. Also enjoyed the crunchy daikon salad.
Delicious, probably 4+.
We had nasu (eggplant), agedashi tofu, hamachi Kama, karaage chicken, sashimi, nigiri sushi combo, and a few maki sushi. Everything had great flavor and was executed really well with the exception of the maki sushi, which looked like it was bludgeoned by Khrushchev's shoe. It was almost comical. The pieces were all different lengths. The fish looked like it was torn apart. The proportions were inconsistent. Taste was fine, but I think sushi chefs are turning over in their graves. Oddly, the sashimi was cut fine. But, the food flavoring was really good. The nasu had a nice balance between sweet and umami. The chicken was fried really well, super juicy. The hamachi Kama had more flavoring than the typical shio (salt) and was nicely balanced. Overall, it was a really enjoyable meal.
The atmosphere inside, as the evening closes it's wonderful
The atmosphere inside, as the evening closes it's wonderful since the giant window gets a nice bit of sunlight, it's calm inside which is offset by three One Piece wall prints. One of them decided to splice one piece into "onep" "iece" which I found very avant garde. The takoyaki was great, hard to get it wrong but obvious when so Edamame was plentiful and garlicky, exactly what I expected from garlic butter edamame Our rolls were excellent, you can taste the quality is definitely above average Service was attentive, I enjoyed eating here and would be back if in the area, prices are a little up there but understandable
Delicious appetizers and great service, sadly accompanied
Delicious appetizers and great service, sadly accompanied by some truly mid nigiri. Small, flavorless pieces of fish on under seasoned rice.
Excellent food.
Excellent service. Truly a hidden gem. Everything is delicious, from appetizers, sushi, skewers, fried chicken, matcha cheese cake and more.

For the freshness of the fish, I would have expected higher prices. This spot was a great find for what it offered. Super fresh fish at decent prices especially for SF. We got the best deals from ordering sashimi platters and chirashi bowls. All the fish was fresh and not frozen. Also lots of different sake to try! Great spot
Just ok.
The service was just ok. The food prep and presentation was just ok We ordered a lot of food. The okra was excellent. The rest was randomly served with almost no interaction from the wait staff - like we were barely there - as no one checked on the table. Food was dropped with no explanation. It was weird.

When you sell a reservation that has a prepaid fee AT takes a commission on that fee. This doesn’t really make sense because it’s an expense the seller incurs not part of the profit that is shared.
For example:
Carbone NYC fee to book table for 2 is $108.88
If you sell it for $200 on AT you get $140 from them.
Your net profit is $31 and AT collects $60 in fees.
It would make more sense not to charge commission on the upfront fee as this creates a disincentive and results in higher costs for buyers.

Agreed. Ultimately not addressing this month after month is clearly resulting in a drop in certain venue’s rankings & sales.
