Splurged here for an anniversary dinner.
At $270/pp without drinks, tip, and tax, it is pretty pricy but so worth it. Each pair gets their own omakase chef. The cuts of fish are amazing. Each one has special sauce and is absolutely spectacular. This is the best omakase in the city, hands down. Drinks are great too. Music is hip hop and fun to listen to.
Be the first to ReplyI was expecting the seating I requested to be accommodated.
It wasn't. When I asked for the manager, the girl who approached me was incredibly rude, and had a serious attitude. Tall girl, skinny, teeth like horse. Clearly no people skills. It was quite obvious she's either new, or had never done this type of work before. Food was overpriced, and nothing special. Music was loud and inconsistent. Poor taste, whoever chose it. Won't be back. Especially after how that manager conducted herself.

This is my favorite omakase sushi spot in NYC! Their toro tartare with caviar on milkbread is mouthwatering... seriously, I dream about this dish at night! The staff is always friendly and welcoming. Fish is super fresh and all their ingredients are top-of-the-line in quality. Their plum sake is also delicious!
Be the first to ReplyService was great.
Nice atmosphere. Food left something to be desired. Went with my husband and the bill for omakase with alcohol pairing came to $1200. I left feeling underwhelmed and overcharged. So many omakase are have the price and twice as good.
Be the first to ReplyI was a SHUKO raver when it first opened.
It was beautiful. The sushi was different and special. But Mr Kim now disappoints. The sushi is very underwhelming. For $270 omakase we should demand better. I'm going to have to look for a replacement. I'm sorry I used to regale them but this is my second mediocre omakase. I'm done.
Be the first to ReplyI think the place has lost a bit of its luster since it
I think the place has lost a bit of its luster since it opened 7-8 years ago. The hype and originality has passed and now it's a place for bankers and those that want to be seen. Having said that, the quality of the fish is still high, the portions are generous, and we thoroughly enjoyed the wine list and sake we ordered. For those looking for a more traditional omakase experience, I'd recommend elsewhere like Ginza Onodera or Kanoyama. The ordering of the nigiri was also unconventional as well: they served toro early on in the meal when heavier pieces are usually saved for last. This place is fun, the toro + caviar toast is delicious, and it's a more laid back place versus stuffy traditional edomae sushi places. Best to take your gringo friends who can't tell the difference . Multiple sushi chefs churning out nigiri, so there won't be too much pleasantries. The bill will set you back, but you'll leave having a great time. Music is on point.

But before I get to the review, who lets a dog sit at a sushi bar?Yes, an actual dog. Sitting on a customer's lap at the sushi bar. Next to the fish. Prime time Friday night. At a $270/head omakase. I honestly have no words. I saw the customers arrive with their pup and give the hostess a hard time, but I never imagined they'd let them in. Isn't that a serious health violation?Ok now the rest. The good: We really enjoyed our sushi courses. It was not so memorable as the last time we dined here, when it was half the price. But there were some standout bites. The bad: we really did not enjoy the first few courses - the sunomono, the sashimi, the toro tartare were forgettable. Service was mixed. The sushi chef and sommelier were wonderful but the waitress existed purely to upsell us.All in all a pleasant evening but not worth the price tag. And the dog thing really got to me - if no one blinked an eye at that, what else do they let slide?
Be the first to ReplyVery disappointing Omakase experience.
Chefs lack technical skill, presentation is basic, fish quality just ok, missing creativity. Shuko may be founded by Masa alums but tonight their talents were nowhere to be found. Sushi chefs struggled with the knife. Scraps of fish and skin were thrown back in the neta box (which they cover with a sport towel to hide the lack of care given to the fish). Several pieces of nigiri were cut too long. This was "remedied" by the chef cutting off the long ends and placing them on top of the nigiri - unacceptable and blasphemous at this price point. Other pieces of nigiri were cross cut so heavy handedly they broke apart. The 16 nigiri course started with Otoro. Why? The meal should build from lightest to fattiest. Ended with cucumber and shiso "nigiri" with nori to hold it together. Seriously? For $270?Many other great options in NY. Shuko gets a hard pass.
Be the first to ReplyHad an outstanding experience at Shuko.
The food was delicious (literally every course was great) and the service was attentive and polite. Nice ambiance with good music playing in the background. Love getting to watch the chefs at work. Losing a star because I do think it's a bit overpriced- could probably get a similar quality experience for much less elsewhere in NYC. However, no complaints about the overall experience. I recommend it if you're looking to splurge for an occasion!
Be the first to ReplyI took my family for omakase last year while I was in town
I took my family for omakase last year while I was in town after seeing Shuko featured on David Chang's Hulu special. Love the unassuming environment and overall it was a nice experience. My only grievance was that I noticed my neighboring patrons had a course with gold flakes, so I asked our chef if there were different levels of omakase and he replied "no". Do I pointed out discreetly and politely and told him I saw the gold flake course featured on the show like how the folks next to us was being served. So I found out he skipped the gold flakes for us and subbed it and I felt like it was assumed we wouldn't know the difference. He felt bad and "gave" us an extra course without gold flakes but for me it ruined my expectations. I didn't make it noticeable to my family because I didn't want to take away from their experience. I would still recommend this to try but personally I wouldn't come back because I felt mistreated in that moment. Otherwise host, wait staff, presentation was great.

This place was incredible! One of the best omakase I've ever had in my life! My friend surprised me and took me here for my birthday. We sat at the sushi bar and everything about this place was impeccable. The vibe is nice, cozy, intimate, and hip. I'd say the interior is very minimalist and they were playing really good 90s hip hop at the perfect volume. The chopstick holders had a lot of character, every seat had a s different design- super cute! Onto the chef and the omakase.. it was unbelievable in the best possible way. Every piece that our chef made for us was mouthwatering. Every single bite was delicious and very memorable. My favorite was the uni, ikura, hokkaido, toro, wagyu, and the caviar dish. Every piece tasted so fresh and bursted with flavor.Had the Albarino wine- wow! It paired so nicely with every dish and the wine tasted excellent. Let's talk service- one of the best service I've experienced. They were very attentive, but not overbearing in anyway. Always made sure everything was perfect and the best part was that they had a little birthday dessert for me with a handwritten card- I wanted to cry from happiness lol. Everything about this place exceeded beyond my expectations!Would I recommend? Absooolutely! 11 out of 10! I will definitely be back! Note: the door has no sign on it besides the address number on the side which is easy to miss. I walked passed it twice lol. And I'd recommend sitting at the sushi bar- it's cool to watch the chefs in their element.
Be the first to ReplyCompletely overpriced meh experience from a supposedly one
Completely overpriced meh experience from a supposedly one of the best omakase in NYC. It felt more like a casual local bar with some mediocre sushi. I wouldn't go again.
Be the first to ReplyGood lord, this is one the best Omakase I have ever had.
It's slightly on the pricey side at $270 a person, but every piece of fish was really outstanding. I sat at the sushi bar and the meal took 1:45 or so. I had a $12 Japanese lager with my meal. They have an excellent selection of Japanese whiskies, but those prices match the food price and I don't love paying $25 to $100 for an ounce of whiskey no matter how good it is.My favorite pieces were as follows:1. Chutoro2. Wagyu3. Barracuda4. Horse Mackerel5. Scallop6. Salmon RoeMany other good pieces but those were my favorites. Service was impeccable and they kept the fresh house made ginger coming (I ate 4 servings of this). The small bite of ice cream at the end was a nice palate cleanser. One other thing, there is no sign on the door and I walked past it twice trying to find it. That's just part of the adventure I guess.
Be the first to ReplyAbsolutely amazing experience.
I've been fortunate enough to go here twice now and it's a surreal food experience. Each dish is masterfully crafted into edible art that pleases the eyes and touches your soul via your taste buds.

Was here last evening for a Sushi/Saki/Wine pairing business dinner. Truly an amazing experience. Interacting with the sushi chefs who are working with you 3' away was amazing. I loved seeing the box of goodies that the check was workign with. No plastic wrapped fish in a freezer case here, some of the most beautiful fish I've ever seen, and eaten. Highly recommended, will be back.
Be the first to ReplyThe best sushi on the east coast.
Unbelievably good. Would give more stars if I could across the board: Food, service, environment. All 12/10.
Be the first to ReplyFirst time back at Shuko post pandemic and it's gone
First time back at Shuko post pandemic and it's gone downhill. Restaurant felt dingy and the floors were not clean. Our server greeted us in an aggressive way insisting we open the drink portion of the menu while she stood watching over our shoulder. But the real issue was watching a bar full of sushi chefs pre-slicing the fish!!! This is a $230 meal before gratuity, drinks and tax. Pre cutting the fish is unacceptable! Sushi is meant to be cut to order as fish starts degrading in quality from that point. Watching the chefs pile up stacks of precut fish was shocking. We ended up deciding to leave and the manager was very rude about it. She tried to lecture me as to how Shuko is a fine dining Omakase and that everything is made to order. She clearly does not have experience with high end sushi outside of her stint as Shuko. Save your money. There are better experiences in the city for that kind of money.

The dining experience at Shuko was good customer service is horrible. My card was charged double, and the manager, Mary Luu treated me like her biggest inconvenience of the day when I asked for a refund on my card. Expected sincere apologies for the honest mistake but it must be the most impossible task for this management.
Be the first to ReplyFantastic sushi at Shuko.
There are high expectations when one walks through that unmarked door, but rest assured because every dish is executed very well. Started off with a milk bread, toro, caviar, and uni appetizer. Then came toro that was very soft and just melted in one's mouth. It was a good indicator of the quality of the nigiri that would be coming. The Hokkaido uni was one of the best I've ever had from that region. I also enjoyed the Japanese sea perch which I believe the chef referred to as akamutsu, though I've heard it called nodoguro at other places. Spanish mackerel was good, and even the horse mackerel (which I'm not usually that big of a fan of) was okay here. Scallop, soft shrimp, hirame, amberjack and others were all great. Some pieces are blow torched, some have little dollops of sauce added on top (yuzu pepper, for example). The meal ended with a soy ice cream that we all liked. No apple pie though. Our server Lua was very nice and knowledgeable. We appreciated her suggesting to us to not order the add-ons right at the beginning, but to wait a little bit to determine if we'll need them. It turned out that we were quite full with the standard set, and did not need the add-ons. We did order some Pappy Van Winkle 10-year and 12-year bourbons to finish off the meal. The restaurant carries a nice array of Japanese whiskies, American bourbons (I saw a lot of Michter's), and sakes. They called me to confirm my reservation twice - once on the day before (which I called back and spoke to someone) and then again on the day of (which when i called back got no response). This is confusing, as it made me wonder if my first confirm never went through. It made me question how effectively the service staff were communicating with each other. We were not able to get a corner section of the bar (which would've been nice as we were a party of three), but that's fine, others booked it first. Aside from those two minor things, everything else was terrific.I thought Shuko was as good as Ginza Onodera is food-wise, though the latter has a more impressive interior and higher price tag. This is a more intimate setting, similar to that of Kura.
Be the first to ReplyTypical omakase experience.
The place is a bit on the less of a zen experience and more of a bustling and loud experience. Still, the food is well presented and the sushi is good but not memorable. I remember this place having too much going on in the peripheral, making it harder to focus in the sushi.
Be the first to ReplyIf you're looking for a perfectly executed omakase
If you're looking for a perfectly executed omakase experience, look no further than Shuko. The vibes here are hip. It's a minimalist Japanese design on the inside with hip hop playing at a perfect volume in the background. It's a mix of traditional with classic NY street style. The food was unbelievable. It was probably the only omakase experience I've had where I actually left feeling full. Every single bite was delicious. Stand outs were everything uni, tuna, and a sea trout I'll never forget. Make your reservation early, get the uni tasting, be emotionally prepared for an unforgettable meal! Oh, and make sure to sit at the counter!

The best Omakase in NY - On this special day, I enjoy the heartbeat on the tip of my tongue. So beautiful environment. The quality of fish is amazing . The highlights tonight is uni toro caviar toasted , so amazing. My chef tonight was Jacky, he did wonderful job of explaining each of the dish and answering all of my questions. He was very professional. The service is very good. I hope I can go back in the near future.

Prior to our dinner we only heard great reviews about dining at Shuko so our expectations were high. I can easily say our expectations were beyond met. From the first course to the dessert every dish was INCREDIBLE. Each piece of sushi was an experience of its own. I've never had better uni and now I crave it every day. The service at Shuko was amazing as well. From our knowledgeable sushi chef to our waitress and the sommelier. All were great!
Be the first to ReplyWow one of the best omakase experiences ever.
