Went with a friend last night and this place was empty (it was pouring out), but don't let that fool you - the food was great!Szechuan chicken, salt & pepper shrimp, and dan dan noodles were excellent. The noodles came in a massive dish, almost in a broth - diff way then either of us had seen before, but really good. And a perfect companion for the other dishes. They also give you daikon to help cool your palate :-)Go here before others find out about this spot!
Be the first to ReplyAuthentic and delicious.
It can be very spicy but you can ask them to tone it down. The staff is very accommodating. Atmosphere is pleasant, calm (tables reasonably far apart), not hectic like a lot of the other East Village places.

So good and so authentic! Did I mention the portions were huge? A nice thing to see in these times of inflation. Would definitely come back.

Relatively new restaurant - found out about it through a review in the New Yorker so had give it a try on our latest trip to NY. On a weekend night it wasn't too busy which was actually a good thing (reservations can be made on Yelp). Mid size dining room with nice modern decor, warmly lit with lights in red shades, well spaced tables. Laminated bilingual menu with pix for some of the dishes. We had kung pao shrimp (very good), fried string beans (excellent), twice cooked pork (not bad but a bit bland, being a less spicy dish), appetizers - fungus (black wood ears - very tasty) and chili bean jelly (ok), pork buns (in Chinese it's easily mistaken as soup dumplings which they are not). For dessert, jelly in brown sugar syrup (could be a bit more flavorful but quite refreshing). Overall a great addition to the neighborhood. Online reservation accepted which is convenient.

I fancy myself someone who will try most foods, but my first glance at So Do Fun's menu, with its ox tongue in chili sauce and bullfrog dishes, had me thinking my adventurous palate card should be revoked. It wasn't until a group of my more intrepid eater friends gathered us to dine here that I realized there's not only plenty of things I'd like at this restaurant, but my predilection for spicy food would make this a perfect match for me.If I see mapo tofu on a menu I will order it, and thankfully their interpretation was quite good. It came in a deceptively small looking but deep pot that almost felt like it was refilling itself because the pot was way less shallow than it seemed. This dish, like all the dishes on our table, paired really well with plenty of white rice. The salt n pepper shrimp was nice and crispy though note that they keep the shell on, which is a more traditional way of serving it. My group also loved the boiled fish in chili sauce, which seems to be their specialty. It came in an enormous bowl that we could basically swim in, with loads of peppercorns, chilis, pickled relish and fresh pieces of fish. My favorite dish had to be the century egg. For the uninitiated, century egg is a Chinese dish that preserves duck or chicken egg in of clay, ash, salt, quicklime, and rice hulls for several weeks to several months. It creates this earthy, umami-rich egg that is really nice in savory cold dishes like the one served here. I think it's probably an acquired taste for most western palates, but I love it. The sauteed and diced green peppers were saucy and delicious too. They have a huge dining room that is sadly mostly half empty when I've passed by it, but I enjoyed my meal here and hope they come to serve many more intrepid diners to come.

Chinese restaurants are ubiquitous in the city, but really good ones are rare. Most of the time you can almost predict what will be on a menu when you open it, but not so here. While there is plenty of familiar, there were also dishes that were new to me. So Do Fun checks off a lot of boxes... Authenticity, presentation, decent portions, good service, cleanliness and an interesting interior. That it is near where my son lives is an added plus.We tried a variety of dishes on our recent visit and all of them were good. The Steamed Eggs with Shrimp was a Chinese custard with a splash of soy sauce on top. A great warming dish on a cold day and an effective counterpoint to the other spicy dishes we ordered.Dry Fried Green Beans were spicy and delicious. Heavily flavored with chili, Szechuan peppercorns, garlic and preserved vegetable, we found ourselves picking up little fragments of the salty preserved vegetable throughout our meal. Shredded Potato with Green Pepper was a little less spicy, but a nice light preparation of the dish. Slightly oily to my taste, but there was still a freshness to the dish. Crunchy potato balanced by what I think are long hot peppers. My son commented on the oil and said that the dishes here had a cleaner taste than at other Chinese restaurants. Our last dish was Steam Pork in Rice Meal. I expected a steamed pork loaf, but this was steamed pork belly that had been dipped in rice meal over chunks of taro. As expected, it was very rich, but great for a small bite.Keep in mind that So Do Fun is not afraid to put chilis in dishes. They'll tell you if a dish is spicy, but nothing was too spicy to be enjoyed. So Do Fun has not been open for that long and perhaps that is why it was not that crowded. We actually chose it for that reason. Don't be deterred. Try it before it gets crowded.

Will definitely be going back here.

This restaurant is fantastic! My party came in on a rainy Saturday afternoon and our server was able to accommodate us, even though we had no reservations. As we looked at the menu, we started off with the Garlic Pork Belly and some Wanglaoji iced tea. The pork belly was savory and had a hint of spice which gave it a nice kick of flavor. For the main dishes, we ordered Mapo Tofu, Sichuan Style Spicy Fried Chicken and Kung Pao Chicken- all of this with some sides of white rice. I am a big fan of Sichuan restaurants and this one did not disappoint. Not only was the food amazing but our server was very nice and made sure to check in on us regularly. There were a few other dishes we wanted to order in addition, however, towards the end we were satiated decided to hold off. Will have to come back here to try more dishes. If you are in the area and are looking for delicious sichuan food, definitely try this restaurant. PS. The Sichuan Spicy Fried Chicken can be quite spicy-- so have some water close by just in case.

Ordered takeout for Sichuan Style Spicy Fried Chicken and it is the best I've ever had in NYC.
Be the first to ReplyTLDR: "Authentic" Szechuan food.
Not for the faint of heart. There were mixed reviews from the group. I enjoyed the restaurant, La Portena found it acceptable, and the feinschmecker did not like it.We arrived for a Sunday lunch about 1 p.m. The Grand Opening banner was still up and two or three other tables were occupied during our time there. You begin with a small dish of pickled cucumber and daikon on the house. We ordered the soy sauce cucumber and the beef and ox tongue appetizer. The cucumbers were sweet and a good palliative if you are overcome by ma la. I thought the beef and ox tongue was pretty much perfect, La Portena protested the amount of ma la. For main courses we tried the whole fish (bass) , the salt and pepper shrimp, and the double cooked pork. the whole fish was the winner - it came in a fragrant bath of pickled vegetables, and the sauce was nice over rice. ($1 supplement). Our server tried to steer us to fillets, thinking we Westerners couldn't handle the bones but there were not so many and we like taking the meat off the bones. The pork was a nice dish but not a killer. I have a feeling it was toned down because we indicated that La Portena likes her vittles mild. The salt and pepper shrimp was my least favorite main. I have memories of much better versions, the best being at the now long departed Phoenix Garden. This one was a bit oily, could have been crunchier, and it needed some chilies in there for aesthetics. The shrimp themselves were fine. I'll skip that one next time.Had a Modelo to wash it down.Overall, service was quite good, friendly and prompt, and the decor is what I imagine an upscale restaurant on the mainland would look like. If I come again, I will come with folks who want to eat the heat.

We tried the noodles and cauliflower dishes this time and were very impressed! Super flavorful and great portions. A tad salty but still super delicious! The fish dish was super popular (every table had a bowl of the fish in oil) and it's super huge! Definitely shareable size. It was tender and super photogenic

Had the fish in chili oil and green beans and eggplant and everything was great to have a Szechuan place this good and this close to where we live is going to be a game changer! Watch out Han dynasty!

It's definitely the best and most authentic Chinese food in the area. Order the chili fish or the shredded pork with garlic sauce. Delicious!

We got the tomatoes sliced beef soup and spicy wontons for take out. I would not return for either dish. Both dishes were cooked way too sweet for some reason. There are much better ones in NYC. Though, the slogan advertises for the spicy poached fish, so we may return for that.

Finally some authentic Chinese food in Gramercy!!!! We had the MOST delicious dinner made from fresh ingredients and the perfect blend of spices: Pork Buns, Green Beans and Eggplant, and Crispy Fried Chicken - all cooked to perfection! The staff was super attentive and friendly (shoutout to Kat!) and the atmosphere had the perfect blend of clean and bright without feeling cold. So happy to welcome So Do Fun to the neighborhood!
Be the first to ReplyI'm sorry we ate the food too fast to take any photos.
It was extremely great food. Yeah, I said extremely great. Service was amazing. Kat was so nice! Can't say enough high praise. Will be coming back for sure.

Szechuan mountain house is way better so idk why you would pick this place instead of walking a few extra minutes for better food
Be the first to ReplyMediocre to meh--not a drop better.
Disorganized kitchen took over an hour to push out our food, with a half empty restaurant and an over worked waitress. There is much better authentic Szechuan in the neighborhood. (Han Dynasty, Szechuan Mountain House). The wontons in chili oil, were clunky & tasteless. The fungus (mushroom appetizer) was boring/unflavorful. The highly touted mapo tofu was inedible. (Impossibly salty, sent back). The lo mein tasted like it came out of a chicken flavored instant ramen noodle package. The bullfrog in Szechuan peppercorn sauce was the only standout dish. Mind that there's no liquor license and the restaurant had limited soft drinks. Our table was apparently served the last can of Diet Coke? Our dishes only magically appeared after asking the waitress to cancel our order as it was 65 minutes after we placed our order. We asked for the manager twice, however no one visited our table to explain or apologize. If you live in the neighborhood, go elsewhere. If you live elsewhere, don't waste your time here.
