My wife and I went to Sol de Mexico for Valentine's Day and it was great! The service staff was very attentive and the owner, Carlos, came out to check on several tables. The food was delicious and who doesn't love hand made tortillas! My wife ordered the carne asada and said it was like butter and I ordered the lomo al pastor and it was seasoned perfectly. Definitely recommend for a date night, the ambiance was intimate enough.

The appearance was off at first glance and the taste confirmed that the guava flan was rotten.

The best, fine dining, Mexican food in the city! Everything made with the love of the art of food, sophistication, and elegance. While it is a nice restaurant, we have gone early and brought our toddler, so it def can accommodate a variety of ages. If you don't go, you are missing a city gem.

A hidden gem of creative cocktails and great Mexican food -- the staff was friendly and helpful, the interior warm, welcoming and beautiful -- it's a little slice of heaven. One of the best places I've been for Mexican food and that is saying a LOT in Chicago.
Be the first to ReplyGreat spot! The food is authentic Mexican.
They change the menu items often and keep things new and fresh from appetizers to desserts. The place is very colorful and the service is great! They also have really good tequila and mescal drinks! A few of my favorites are the guayaba tamarindo and jalapeño margaritas! Definitely recommend!

Spent over an hour freezing waiting for trains and buses to try this place. Got here a half hour before closing time to get a brusque "we're closed." and a shrug.

This is a completely fantastic restaurant, which I can't wait to return to!! Food is intensely delicious, servers are amazing- friendly, professional and fast, bathrooms are perfectly clean, the restaurant is beautiful! Wow! Came with a party of 4 and had a perfect meal. I was here years ago pre-pandemic and remember the same great experience. This place is a gem.

Come for the margaritas, but don't necessarily stay for the food.Based on this restaurant's place on the Bib Gourmand list for 2022, I thought I should check this out. Average food, OK space, service is a little slow but service is slow everywhere right now so I won't hammer Sol de Mexico too hard on that one.I thought the queso fundido was good, and those tortillas were maybe the highlight of the meal. Things didn't snowball from there, but it is fair to say that the remaining two dishes (the enchiladas gratinadas, and the lomo de res carne asada) didn't knock my socks off. Well prepared, and a beautiful presentation for each dish, but the flavors were somewhat bland. We did get a lot of food--too much food, maybe?--for these price points, and for two margaritas, the queso fundido, and the two entrees, we dropped $120 (all in, including tax and tip). Those tortillas and the margaritas are why I might come back. As is, though, I'm saddened to say that Sol de Mexico was only OK.

Sol de Mexico was one of the featured Chicago restaurants serving the dish. I just got back from trying to have a lunch there. The restaurant was closed. There was no sign in the window to explain the closure. This was their chance to shine. Closed and no sign was a very bad indication of the establishment.

The food was amazing! We had mole negro with lamb, guacamole, a cilantro margarita, shrimp dulce and flan. Everything was unbelievably delicious. The service was gracious and thoughtful. Chef came out to say hello. This isn't a run-in-and-grab-a-taco place. Plan to spend some time, relax and enjoy. Ah! And the homemade tortillas. How could I forget? The whole thing was a delight. It was a bit more expensive than I expected, so plan accordingly. It's also a bit out of the way, and not a terribly picturesque street, but absolutely worth the trip for the great food and kind service.
Be the first to ReplyI've been coming here since 2012.
I've been to almost every new and old Mexican restaurant in the city. Sol de Mexico is the best Mexican restaurant in Chicago and it's one of the best value restaurants in the country. I love the ceviche and the borrego en mole negro. It's an excellent establishment that actually deserves a Michelin star. If anyone remembers mexique (same great chef runs tzuco now) then you know sol de Mexico should be Michelin starred... because quite frankly it's been the best Mexican in Chicago for the past decade

Sol de Mexico is a restaurant that had not grabbed my attention until a friend recommended and booked it for a small group dinner. My wife and I went in not knowing what to expect and left surprised this place had not blown up; it was impressive! When we first walked in, a bright assortment of blues, oranges, reds, greens, and yellows met us at the door. Charming and intricate paper-lantern-like stars hung and illuminated the tables and splashed more color throughout the space. I could not stop looking up in admiration throughout dinner. Our kind waitress brought us water, explained the menu, and took our drink and food order. I ordered a Jamaica Margarita and Tamarindo Margarita for my wife. We got the ceviche and sopesitos with a side of salsa habanera as appetizers. For entrees, we did a family-style meal where we each ordered a different plate for the table to share. The three entrees we chose were the borrego en mole negro (mole being a house specialty), the birria, and cerdo en mole manchamanteles. As for desserts, we ordered another trio consisting of a tamal de chocolate, pay de coco, and flan de cafe. Vivid colors continued as a theme with our drinks and food, with light greens, dark reds and blacks, pinks, whites, and everything in between appearing in the plating or ingredients themselves. The first of these was our ceviche and margaritas. My Jamaica Margarita was slightly sour and refreshing, and the Tamarindo Margarita was much sweeter but as refreshing. Due to my soft spot for sweet drinks in my old age, I enjoyed the Tamarindo more. A tangy salsa verde accompanied the ceviche and accentuated the freshness of the fish, tomatoes, and cilantro. The crispy, curved tostadita the ceviche laid on broke the monotony of chewiness with a crunchy bite. It was a very well-balanced and good opening to the meal. The four sopesitos came varied, with each one individualized by the filling. Though all four were unique and flavorful, my personal favorite of the four was the black bean and chorizo. This sopesito packed the most punch despite its miniaturized stature. After scarfing down the apps, the entrees came, each with a basket of hand-made, fresh tortillas; a true mark of an authentic Mexican meal. Instinctively, I grabbed a warm tortilla, ripped a piece off, and scooped it into the beautiful, dark brown pool of mole goodness my borrego sat in. The bold, rich, sweet, spicy, and earthy flavors tap-danced in my mouth. Simply put, it was excellent. The borrego itself did not quite reach that height, as it was tough, but that could have been my fault as I asked it for medium. Medium rare would have been the perfect cook, and I may try it again at that temperature next time. I took a bite of the cerdo, and it was good too. The cerdo was soft and moist, the chorizo on top gave it an extra salty kick, and the mole enhanced and added more flavor. Finally, I tried the birria, and of the three entrees, this stole the show. It was tender and succulent, and I could imagine it falling off the bone when it was cooked and plated. Also, unlike other birria I have tried where the gamey nature of the meat takes center stage, this one did not taste gamey. The bath of consome was hearty and tasted like home, in the best way. For me, the birria was the dish of the night and worthy of a return trip. For the finale, our desserts came with an air of swankiness you would find at a restaurant in River North. With my first bite, I went with the tamal de chocolate. As soon as my spoon hit the tamal, it glided into it with its own weight. It was eye-opening, with the tamal having the consistency of a warm chocolate brownie and a pronounced dark chocolate flavor. The vanilla ice cream served with it was a match made in heaven. While the flan de cafe was good, the texture was gelatin-like instead of custard-like. Last, the pay de coco. I am not a fan of artificial coco and had low expectations for this dessert, but it made me a fan! It took the silver medal, with the tamal taking home the gold and flan the bronze.Sol de Mexico gave us a great dinner. They are the lone upscale Mexican restaurant in a sea of taquerias on the Northwest side of Chicago. It fills a gap in the food scene desperately needed in the neighborhood and does so very well! Stop by, order the birria with a Tamarindo Margarita, and indulge in this microcosm of Mexico. I recommend it.
Be the first to ReplyMother's Day 2022; restaurants need to be ready for action.
This restaurant has great food but lacks in service. It started out very good with a mixture of appetizers that were on point. Then, the soup: was delicious too. Main meal it all fell apart. It was four of us and 3 of us had to send our main dishes back to the kitchen. The steak was completely raw, it didn't matter how you asked for it cooked all 3 were cooked improperly. Our first drinks came on time, the 2nd margarita took 30 minutes and 3 requests. I guess it's a hit or miss, it should be better for the price tag. We could have gone anywhere, we also got charged for an extra drink and one meal that was never touched. Eventually, the bill was corrected.
Be the first to ReplyI cannot say enough about this gem.
Have been numerous times and service is prompt and food is delicious. There is a huge selection on the menu. Chips and salsa served when you are seated. The adult beverages are huge. Very large portions and all reasonably priced. Highly recommend.
Be the first to ReplyWowza! Hidden gem.
This restaurant should have a Michelin star! Perfection in a very unexpected place. Great date night place with incredibly delicious authentic Mexican cuisine and excellent service.
Be the first to ReplyBest delicious homemade Mexican in forever.
It's not a taco joint. This is fine dining simple food, with outstanding flavors.
Be the first to ReplyThe food here was amazing and authentic.
I'm so glad we were able to make it in before our flight. Everything we had was phenomenal - cocktails, tamales, taquitos, sopesitas, moles (chicken, pork, and seafood). What a gem to find and can't wait to come back next time we are in Chicago. The service was excellent and very warm and inviting.
Be the first to ReplyI call to place an order for pickup.
She says let me put you on a brief hold. I then go and say not a problem. 10 minutes later she take me off of hold and says we're not taking orders for pick up. So why would you make me wait 10 minutes. Worst place ever so unprofessional.

Sol de Mexico is a ray of sunshine along a stretch of smog and traffic along busy Cicero Ave. This tiny place is actually 2 rooms of deliciousness Their cocktail menu is creative and delicious. We loved the guacamole, and the mole. The only hiccup in this gem is the lack of staff. Our wait time for food was pretty long. We may have to go mid week when it isn't as crowded.

The food is good, the service is extremely slow, which is fine if it's food that takes time to cook but it takes at least 30min for them to make your drink after taking 15min to even place your order. The rack of lamb was delicious minus the cold mashed potatoes, and the mole on the enchiladas is amazing but there was no cheese and the wait is just waaaaaaaay too long.

Im so glad I finally had a chance to stop by and have dinner. We had the Sopesitos for the appetizer and those were so delicious. Then we opted for the pineapple and pomegranate margaritas which were perfectly made. Our dinner was camaróns con mole verde and salmon con salsa poblana. My mouth is watering just remembering the meal to write this review! We will definitely be back! Oh yeah and we added dessert, the pay de coco with strawberry ice cream and strawberry drizzle was the bomb! Of course everything was clean and covid ready.
Be the first to ReplyAbsolutely delicious.
Get the sopecitos as an appetizer. Chicken mole is so tender a flavorful. Creative drink menu. Everything was top notch.
