First of all, you can find plenty of delicious food here
First of all, you can find plenty of delicious food here even if you eat only mild dishes. Plenty of non-spicy possibilities. The brussel sprouts and eggplant are delectable!! The potato dumplings are a very pleasant surprise if if you like dill and potatoes. We loved other dishes too (my vegan chef cousin on another visit greatly enjoyed the tofu bun and her Asian ice tea). We were very fortunate to have WILL as our server. Will was highly attentive, yet gave us plenty of space; he patiently described the food and answered all of our many questions to help us select the best dishes for our group-members' variety of tastes. NICE, CARING service. Actually, I've had other fantastic servers there too, so the training seems top-notch at Spicy Moon and/or they hire exceptional staff.

I'm not sure why it took me so long to eat here but I'm so glad I did. Chill ambiance. The Dan Dan noodles were spicy but not crazy. The portions are wonderful. The price is reasonable. It was all good energy. I'll be back!

Despite its favorable reviews, this vegetarian and vegan Chinese restaurant left me underwhelmed. The dishes, overly reliant on breading with scant filling, missed an opportunity to showcase the rich potential of plant-based cuisine. Expectations of a diverse and innovative menu were met with basic offerings, lacking in variety and culinary creativity. This establishment could benefit greatly from a refreshed approach to its menu, embracing the full spectrum of flavors and ingredients available in vegetarian and vegan cooking.

Waited like 30 mins for our table despite having a reservation, which isn't a huge deal but just something to note. I really did not like the food at all. I got the kung pao style and it was so bland. The 3 cup stir fry dish was actually so bad. I tried every dish my party of 7 got and thought it was all super average but that also could just be personal preference. Aesthetically the dishes are really pretty tho!
Be the first to ReplyEverything was delicious! General Tsos tofu was sooo good.
The noodles were also amazing. The veggie fried dumplings were okay, but it could've used more flavor. The restaurant is really dark, so bring your nocturnal friends. Service was very friendly, and they had fun music playing. It's a bit pricy, and also very filling, so definitely consider sharing.

Not a fan of the dumplings, the dan dan noodles were great though. Service was good too for a relatively busy night. It is a fun and bustling environment for sure though. It is an intimate space and also they are kinda strict on the time if they are busy.

Great vegan spot in east village! Ambience: I came here on a weekday night and it was bustling! They do have a decent amount of seating! We were seated by the bar which was nice Service: fast and attentive Food: we ordered a lot for two people. Mt recommendation would be to get a few items to share so you can try more! The crabless Rangoon was my favorite - it had a lot of flavor and was well made! We ordered three buns: tofu, shiitake, and gong chicken! I liked the gong chicken one, the others I felt lacked flavor. We also got a main, which was the tofu dry pot! It was filled with veggies and I really enjoyed it! Note: you have to buy rice separately! Solid options all around Price: for all that food- it was about $70! So not cheap but also good value and a good experience

The space is smaller than I thought it would be, so I definitely recommend a reservation if you can grab one! The tables are super close together and it can get loud, so it might not be the best place for a first date or something. BUT my friend and I were seated at the window side by side, and it was perfect for gossipping. I ordered the dan dan noodles and stringbeans, and both were simply so delicious. The noodles were perfectly bouncy, it was a HUGE bowl of noodles, and they were so peanut-y and sauce-y. They were spicy, but not too spicy-- just enough to feel a kick at the end. I was able to finish the whole bowl and I am still thinking about how they tasted right now. The stringbeans were equally as flavorful, and I cannot recommend both enough. My friend was also GF, and we were told the items with black stars on the menu were able to be made GF!

This is definitely awesome vegan food, but as a non-vegan, I didn't feel conscious that anything was missing or an "approximation." It was just really good Sichuan style food. We had the green onion pancakes, steamed eggplant in pepper sauce and Kung Pao tofu (side of brown rice). We saw another table having the Kung Pao and we just pointed and said, "we want that" because it looked so delicious. And it was! We were having a pretty chill dinner vibe wise, despite our spicy tongues thanks to the eggplant. Towards the end of the dinner my friend noticed the waiter seemed a bit stressed about getting us to settle up. I laughed and mentioned that I had read about the "GTFO" attitude another Yelper encountered after being given a heads up that their dining time would be limited to an hour during the weekend. This was a Tuesday and more folks were streaming in, but there was some space still in the tiny restaurant. No one said anything overt to us, but we paid the bill and made for the door. Knocked a star off my review for the rushed feeling, but the food is 5 star.
Be the first to ReplyThe food was delicious, service was quick which is good.
However, the attentiveness was heavily seasoned with eat your food and GTFO. My friends and I made a reservation for 6pm and upon arriving I was informed that it's their busy night and they're booked solid and they allot for 1 hour per table so be sure to finish our meal and GTFO by 7pm. A friend called before arriving and the 1 hour was reiterated over the phone. We all made it to spicy moon by the 6pm no lateness. When we were seated we were again reminded of the 1 hour time deadline. The restaurant is small so I get it. By 7 we were wrapping it up and the check was eagerly offered. I would steer clear of this location. The area has so many other vegan options so if you really want to sit, chat, and enjoy your meal either make a reservation at one of the other spicy moon locations OR find a different restaurant.

As a diehard meat lover who will generally not eat at vegan/vegetarian establishments, this vegan restaurant was legit. Spicy Moon captures the Szechuan cuisine perfectly using only vegan ingredients and I have to applaud them for that. It's super difficult to replicate the real dish especially if it has meat in it but this restaurant absolutely nails the exact taste of Szechuan cuisine. Ngl, this vegan place is better than some other Chinese Szechuan restaurants I have been to. Szechuan cuisine is normally greasy so I came into this restaurant with that expectation. Food: Dan Dan noodles with beyond beef: my favorite dish and was packed with flavor! Sesame taste does stick out and was a tad (barely) spicy. Vegetable wontons with chili oil: EXACTLY like pork wontons in chili oil. Greasy but expected since it's oil. Not too spicy but delicious and stuffed. Mapo tofu with beyond beef: EXACTLY like mapo tofu. No other words, just goodness. Char siu shiitake bun: They managed to make the texture like char siu meat and the sauce tasted exactly like char siu. I don't like mushrooms but I didn't even taste it. Excellent execution! Salt & Pepper Mixed Veggies: super crispy batter and I could barely taste the veggies but that's okay because the batter was perfectly fried and salted.

Cute and snug spot with quick service and overwhelmingly good food. The vegetable fried rice with Beyond beef crumbles was solid, as were the scallion pancakes. Ample portion sizes.
Be the first to ReplyAmazing food.
The veggie wontons in chili oil were the best! But the Dan Dan noodles, fried eggplant, and general tso tofu were all excellent too. You can skip the scallion pancakes.

Overall I think Id need to come back to try more things, but based on my order I'd give it more of a 3.5. If you don't like oily food, I wouldn't recommend it. I think it's great that everything is vegetarian though. For 2 ppl we got 3 apps and 1 main dish: - chili wontons: these were good! I esp like the sweet soy sauce that goes with it - tofu bun: also good! We shared one, the bun was soooo soft and fluffy, and the filling was flavorful - Brussels sprouts: this took a while to come (well after everything else, and I had to ask about it) and it's very crispy but oily - dry pepper pot with tofu and mixed veggies: when we ordered we said tofu, but the waiter asked if we also wanted to add mixed veggies, I thought why not. I didn't realize however that it would be ALL potato and barely any tofu T_T. There was also some eggplant. The worst part though was just how fried and oily everything was. I thought there would be a lot of dry peppers, but I saw mostly fried batter. It was a lot. What I really wanted to try was the honey walnut edamame, but they said they were out :( some other reccs I've gotten before are the Dan Dan noodles, but I probably won't be back any time soon. Service was great though, and the space is pretty small. You don't really need to make reservations but it can get packed

Could the food be any more flavorful? Could the service be any more fun and entertaining. Love spicy moon. I crave and must come back to the village to get my fix.
Be the first to ReplyThe food, ambiance and service were all 10/10.
Some of the best vegan Asian food that I've had- all the dishes that I got (which was many) were delicious!
Be the first to ReplyAbsolutely wonderful experience here! I wasn't expecting
Absolutely wonderful experience here! I wasn't expecting much from vegan Sichuan food, considering that so much of Chinese cuisine is based in non-vegan ingredients, but this really blew my expectations away. The kung-pao tofu is a must get. The tofu is fried, so it develops a super crispy exterior (probably the crispiest tofu I've ever had), while still maintaining an amazingly tender inside. The sauce is pretty classically sweet and savory. The eggplant sticks (forgot what they're called) were also great. They're long sticks of thick cut eggplant, battered and fried. A super crispy exterior, and the eggplant is cooked just right, so it has some chew to it, but is still tender enough to easily bite through. They also throw a ton of MSG on top, so it's reallllly umami, which I loved. The mapo tofu was also great. Tasted very authentic, actually quite spicy, and overall didn't feel the "veganess" of it at all. The spicy wontons and the zhajiang noodles weren't as good. The wontons were too sweet for my taste, and the zhajiang noodles weren't super authentic (more just like slightly spicy noodles, not black bean). Will definitely be back to try other dishes here! Wonderful experience.

Fast service and huge portions! It's a small space so I recommend a reservation. I have a low spice tolerance but the kung pao tofu had the perfect small kick and the tofu was nice and crispy.

I came here for the first time last summer, and been at least once a month since. Spicy Moon is amazing, you don't want to pass this up! It's not just my favorite vegan chinese food, it's probably just my favorite chinese food in general. I've tried half the menu, all phenomenal. 10/10 food, service, and atmosphere. I've also been to the Spicy Moon in West Village, and while it was a nice experience the food was a definitive step down from what I usually get in East Village. Go to the Spicy Moon in East Village, make a reservation in advance, and don't look back. A+!
Be the first to ReplyCan't go wrong with anything on Spicy Moon's menu.
Hot toddy was the day's special and warmed up my insides, but not as much as the numbing and delightful fried rice. The rice came packed with many healthy veggies like purple cabbage and broccoli, I'm going to try make that at home. The dan dan noodles are on the nuttier side with the sesame paste, and pack no Sichuan numb (they said they keep it that way to have it be accessible to everyone), but they served as the perfect compliment to the rice, and their simple spice and texture was really well done. I'm finding myself thinking of slurping on those a few days later. The insides are dimly lit though, I didn't care for that, especially on a rare sunny NYC day.

I LOVE spicy moon! I have been to the west village location but this was my first time at the east village location. We were really excited to try the Honey Walnut Edamame but they don't have it on the menu on Mondays. Our waiter, David, was so nice and asked the kitchen to make it for us anyway! We also had the Dan Dan Noodles and the Dry Pot Tofu. All of it was so so yummy, coming from someone who loves meat! Didn't miss it here at all!

Whenever someone says "let's do vegan," my eyes roll to the other side of my face, but dining at Spicy Moon changed my heart towards vegan food. We ordered the mapo tofu, peppercorn brussel sprouts, dan dan noodles, and general tso's mushroom. Everything was great, albeit oily. Beware, however: mapo tofu can be numbingly hot. Some people are into the numbing spiciness - like me - but this was almost to the point of unable to taste much else. The brussel sprouts were satisfyingly crispy and a modest dosage of the peppercorn numbness. General tso's mushroom hit the spot because I was in the mood for something meaty. The establishment is small and at the time I was there, there was only one server helping a full house.I'd recommend trying this place out - especially for my fellow carnivores who have their doubts on vegan food.
Be the first to ReplyI never thought I could be a full vegan until I came here.
.. if I could eat this everyday I would be vegan without a doubt!! The spicy Mapo tofu was to die for, and their noodle dishes were also great!! Their spicy fries were also on point! Reasonable prices and interesting decor inside!
