We had a post Birthday dinner for the wife at St Jack.
It was a great meal. We made a late reservation and were able to land a table and when we got there, sat promptly. The service was excellent and the cocktail as well as the meal was on point. We'll definitely be back!

Overall a lovely evening - the entrees (duck and sole) were the stars, followed in close second by the warm petit madeleines (do not skip those!). Service was terrific. A little disappointed with some of the appetizers, however (hence the 4, not 5, stars). They are truly in the 3-4 bite category across the board (hamachi cru was 3 pieces; the veal tartar was maybe 4 small spoonfuls; the salsify was 3-4 pieces of veg, etc. etc.), but they are not proportionately priced. The entrees and desserts are far more generous, and worth every penny. If we come back we'll skip the appetizers and maybe order extra entrees (and frites!).
Be the first to ReplyWhat a disappointment on every level.
I've been visiting this establishment since opening and tonight I said "never again.". It started with reception that seemed unable to figure out seating at the bar, then a completely underwhelming bar service that were trying to find their way, totally subpar. Where's the fabulous bar staff once in place? Food not up to the St Jack standards that I've come to know. Butter lettuce salad lacking on every level, (where's the avocado, radish and lettuce, so sparse) tartare bouef full of bread crumbs, hum?? Guinea hen embarrassingly crap. I've had the Guinea hen here on numerous occasions and tonight's service a ridiculous shit amount (a wing and leg for $38 +) at a ridiculously exorbitant price. You are not a Michelin star establishment (not that this justifies crazy prices) , simply a "local's joint."I've been visiting St Jack over the years, no more. It's all about the almighty buck for these owners. Trying to recoup the Lake O misfires? You've blown it for this Alphabet District local.. Comments that extend beyond the pedestrian "supply chain, staffingshortages", guilty as charged? I await a reasonable response.

St. Jackassรฉ on Valentine's Day. Where to begin? Perhaps this dinner was doomed from the start. The hostess insisted we booked an outdoor table in the snow (we did not. We waited 90 minutes at the bar to be seated even though we had a prepaid reservation. The service was just ok. I learned from my partner that our reservation was booked with a traditional menu option, then cancelled and then rebooked by the restaurant with less than two weeks notice. The food was garish and uninspiring at best. and the cocktails were muddy. To top it off, a one way flight to Europe cost less than this dinner. This photo of the dessert (served with the same random piece of toast as the appetizer) says it all. This is the first bad review I've written for a restaurant, but we'll deserved.

It's a lot of fuss and fancy restaurant lingo but at the end of the day you get barely enough to feed a bird, it's average at best and only cost $50 an entrรฉe. What's not to like? Bad food. Big attitude.
Be the first to ReplyPretentious names for average food.
Expensive, small portions. Service was pretty good and it looks nice inside
Be the first to ReplyWonderful food with wonderful service and wonderful friends.
Nice wine list, five stars.
Be the first to ReplyDecent food.
Cocktails were good. Service made us feel like we were an inconvenience. At $125 a head we hoped to feel at ease and instead felt rushed to order and like an annoyance.

My partner and I had dinner here back in April 2021 and had a wonderful experience! We sat outdoors so I can't speak on the indoor dining experience, but the service was good and the food was great. We loved their French onion soup and steak frites! I also ordered the oysters and marinated olives as appetizers and they were delicious. The oysters were a good size, fresh, and served with a yummy mignonette. Cocktails were good as well (one I ordered was the St. Jack Daiquiri and it was quite strong). I'm definitely wanting to visit again and recommend trying them out!

What a fabulous meal! We'd never been here before but I brought my husband here for his birthday. We both loved it - nice atmosphere, the portions were more generous than I expected for a French restaurant, and our waiter (I think his name was Carter?) was patient and very helpful in guiding us to items he thought we'd enjoy. He was spot on. Everything was delicious and we had a great time. Can't wait to go back!
Be the first to ReplyI would give the food 4 stars and the service ~2 stars.
Everything we ordered was very good. As a transplant from a very foodie city, I would say that, while the food was very good, it's overpriced for what it actually is. As far the service goes, if you want complete apathy, this is the place for you. We had called ahead to say we were coming in for a really big celebration and anything special they could do would be greatly appreciated (and obv we would tip extra). When we walked in, the hostess said, "I see you're celebrating tonight." Then, she escorted us through the dining room to a table in the bar next to a family with a crying toddler. I would probably come here again to grab a quick bite after work because the food was tasty, but not to actually bring people for a special dinner. It was a disappointment and I wish I had picked someplace else for our celebration.

Portland does not have any great restaurant, although it has many good ones. St Jack is not one of the good ones.Four of us ate there and were disappointed. Let's start with the food. The waiter, who had no personality, told us that we had to order the entire dinner at once, no starting with appetizers while we contemplated the entrees. We ordered foie gras tart and poached prawns. They came promptly and were OK. A long, long wait ensued between the appetizers and the entrees. The halibut was properly prepared. That was pretty much all that went right in regard to food. The lamb saddle was absurd. My wife and I normally split an entree as, after appetizers, a full entrรฉe can often be too much food. Not as St Jack. $48 for the lamb and it yielded 6 small bites (yes, we counted) of meat and one big bone. We were shocked. With a standard tip, that would be $10 for each small bite.We do appreciate small servings, if the serving size is commensurate with price and quality. The lamb was more like an appetizer, not an entrรฉe. Desserts were ordered. The madeleines looked fine. The cherries jubilee looked anemic (Rainier cherries, not Bing) with the pale cherries tossed on a dab of vanilla ice cream. We ordered two Brandy Alexanders, having drunk them here before when they had been excellent. 10 minutes later, the waiter returned and said they could not make them as they had no cream. A French style restaurant with no cream? A full bar with no cream? Out of cream by 8 pm on a warm, summer Saturday night!? What would Julia Child say? What was really absurd is they had two hosts hanging around the front desk and New Seasons Market is only one block away. When they noticed they were low on cream, could not someone have walked over to New Seasons to buy a few quarts of cream, or is it better to disappoint a customer? Then there was the service. The waiter did not appear to want to be there, and mumbled out his words. No explanations on food. He never returned to see if we had everything we needed. There was the wait in-between appetizers and entrรฉes, so the kitchens timing was off. One couple had a bottle of Champagne. We each had a glass of wine. We were not asked if we would like another glass. When someone asked a different server what champagne was offered by the glass, she did not know. That kind of service may be okay at a Denny's but, not a high priced French establishment. This used to be a good restaurant. We are not sure what happened to them, although we have some theories. We live in Portland and have dined at most of the better restaurants. This was by far the worst experience. We don't plan to return.
Be the first to ReplyIf you are ready for some fancy food then this is the spot.
Never disappoints and always something interesting. Definitely a romantic spot with your cutie or a super celebration. Or if you just wanted to be a lil bougie.
Be the first to ReplyFantastic throughout.
Chicken liver mousse, butter lettuce, sauerkraut bacon pork sausage, halibut collar (special). Reasonably priced, cute interior and great service.

This was one of the bigger culinary disappointments I have ever experienced. We went for our anniversary and after waiting 20mins for anyone to approach us, we received fishy scallops and the most disgusting version of tartare I have ever had (my favorite French dish). I don't normally call people out but this was bad in both service and food. 1star

A wonderful place to have a romantic date night with excellent cocktails and a flavorful meal! The dining room is dimly lit with soft French music playing in the background. Also, the staff is very friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. Our favorite dish was the escargot which was rich and delicious. On the other hand, skip the Pate en Croute which had an unusual texture. Overall, we had a good time here and would recommend this to anyone who enjoys French cuisine!

Steak frites was underwhelming, but the gourgeres, service and ambiance were great. I would definitely recommend having a drink and trying a different entree.

Wonderful food. Waiter had great recommendations. Will definitely good again. Very clean
Be the first to ReplyI liked the atmosphere and service.
There was a fair amount of outdoor seating. The menu had lots of appetizing items and they were plated well (visually appealing). For the price, the flavors didn't wow me enough. Everything was solid, just not amazing.
Be the first to ReplyWow wow wow! Food was amazing.
It's a culinary experience that should not be missed. Order as much as you can because everything is unique and different. Such a wonderful meal. Service was great.

We waited and waited and waited and hour and a forty minutes later we left without desert. It makes me so sad to write this but the service has recently taken a nose dive here. Tonight was the last strike. Not only was it slow but our server K was rude and gave a million excuses of why they didn't come by to check in and let us know they were having issues. I know bigger things are going on in the world, but this meal was a lot of money for a really bad experience. Sadly I won't return for at least a year.

We came here to celebrate my birthday and the service was spectacular. Our server checked in often and was great to provide suggestions for our first time being in. We ordered:Steak and pomme frites: my partner ordered and loved his dish and the steak was tenderChicken liver mousse: so creamy and fantastic paired with the mustard. The bread was also quality with a great crust. Good for sharing Scallop crudo: very light and fresh. Good flavor and was a great compliment to some of the heavier French buttery dishes we ordered. Mussels: the broth for this was delicious!!!! Bigger portion than I anticipated for traditional French dining. Escargot: tasty buttery sauce accompanied the escargot. What's not to love? Good for sharing Pavlova: get this for dessert! You won't regret it. Definitely for someone with a sweet tooth. Ambiance: romantic and cozy
Be the first to ReplyElegant, inviting - passionate food.
Prepare yourself for a sublime experience. Can't wait to come back here many, many more times.

Decided to go the small plate route for dinner to give the best variety. A quick rundown -- was a perfect amount for the two of us:- Gougeres (3) -- Great start. Light on the inside while tasty on the outside- Mortadella Barbajuan -- Was different. Nice amount of mortadella and cheese on top of a crispy cracker-like thing- Scallops En Coquille (3) -- Scallops served on the shell. With a healthy amount of garlic. Tasty. Few more of ย these and that could be an entree.- Escargot -- Different serving than we have had in the past. But tasty.- Foie gras terrine -- always great- Beef tartare au poivre -- also quite goodThat was the positive. Now the one negative. For dessert, we went with the orange 'suzette' -- maybe we should have asked more questions about it. But it was very very underwhelming. Was an orange that was hollowed out and filled mainly with orange sherbet and some cream below that. But the cream was minimal. We didn't taste the grand marnier at well. Overall was one of the most disappointing dishes we have had in a long time. Will we be back? Probably. Will we do dessert again? Not so sure.

Have been here a few other times but had a really great dining experience here last night. We came to celebrate a birthday and everything we ordered was divine - we started with raw oysters and poached prawns (come with the most delicious curry sauce), we also had these cheese/butternut squash balls, and for the main course had baby lettuce salad and monkfish (so well cooked). We ended dinner with a wine pairing and Madeleine dessert (with a side of fresh cream and fruit jelly). The cocktails are also very well made and such great presentation and service.
