A must visit in San Francisco
Amazing, the ambiance, the food was amazing, and overall a high end affordable experience. We had 1 main course and about 4 of the side dishes. The staff was really nice, knowledgable and accommodating. 100/10

One of the highlights of visiting beautiful San Francisco! The culinary offerings here are a delightful blend of comfort and innovation, always tantalizing the palate with their high-quality ingredients and a clear commitment to culinary excellence. Their constantly evolving menu is a fountain of delightful surprises!
Be the first to ReplyCasual & interesting
Great concept, food was interesting and tasty. We enjoyed the casual vibe of the place. Service was fast although we had multiple wait staff during the night and they were a mixed bag - from good to bad. Nice & reasonable wine list. Overall very good value.
Be the first to ReplyExceeded Our Expectations
We went to SB based on a recommendation from a friend, and with very little detail. We were surprised to see a queue for dinner at 5.30 on a Thursday. Also, that the place was full a few minutes after that. The wait staff member valiantly tried to explain the concept, but we couldnโt hear anything above the excited voices on the (often) communal tables. At first the concept itself seemed odd - order from the menu, and/it order from the โdim sum styleโ, dishes that come around on trays or trolleys. We did a bit of both. It has to be said - the food was outstanding. Interesting options in different styles. We tried the duck liver parfait with mini sweet fanciers (great), the persimmon with sesame (very unusual and good), the signature state bird (California fried Quail), our fave - the little crumpet style pancakes with sauerkraut powder. We were too full to try the signature pork belly salad, but had the chocolate pecan pie. It was good but so what overwhelmed by the ginger cream with it. We loved the early 80s soundtrack - Blondie, Duran Duran, New Order, Howard Jones, etc. With wine we ran up a large bill in a short time. However, it was worth every cent. A must try when in SF.
Be the first to ReplyThe best San Francisco restaurant.
Wow wow and more wows. Was recommended by a local and was absolutely blown away by the style, the food quality, the tremendous service that was genuinely friendly and professional at the same time. The trolley and tray offer style of service is executed to perfection and every dish we tried was just brilliant. No wonder it was packed on a midweek evening and holds all the accolades it does.
Be the first to ReplyDinner in San Francisco
Me and my boyfriend had a lovely dinner here. The dim sum style was really fun and you got to see the food before choosing to order it or not. The staff was very friendly and the service was good. Prices were reasonable. Would definitely recommend!! Favourite meal I had while in San Francisco.
Be the first to ReplyNot Michelin-star quality - either for food or service
Our experience was relatively poor - and my wife wouldโve given it 2 stars rather than 3. Good things: the food is tasty, with a good range (of choice and price) and generally OK prices (but see below). There is also a decent, interesting wine list. Bad things: while the food is good, itโs not innovative or impressive enough to warrant a Michelin star. Further, the quail is marketed as โ2 piecesโ or โ4 piecesโ, but the reality is that the 2-piece portion is one breaded piece chopped into two. This struck us as a bit cheeky - particularly for ~ $25. We waited an hour for the mushroom toast, which only emerged after we asked a few different servers (it not being clear who was actually responsible for our covers, which was frustrating throughout the meal). When it emerged, the toast was tepid. They offered to remake the dish but we had finished our meal and wine by that stage and didnโt want to hang around for another indeterminate period of time. The alternative offer was to eat it as-is, which my wife accepted (as we were somewhat hungry) but then the plate was cleared awayโฆ More generally, the service was a bit smug - which didnโt come across well given the various flaws in the meal and service. We expressed our concerns, which were listened to - and the quail was removed from the bill and a dessert was brought instead of the toast. We appreciated this, but frankly weโd rather that they had provided what we had asked for (and were happy to pay for) - you shouldnโt have this many qualms with a Michelin-starred restaurant, so itโs hard to believe that the errors were particularly unusual given how many there were. They said a few times that they are normally โbetter than thisโ, but obviously that provides cold comfort when youโre out for a celebratory meal (or indeed any meal of this price and purported calibre).
Be the first to ReplyFun, Tasty Dining Experience
Our family of four, including two teens, really enjoyed the State Bird Provision experience. Almost everything we tasted was excellent but the standouts were consistently the vegetable dishes - crispy Brussel sprouts, beets with pistachios, silky black mushrooms served in a way we had never tasted before. Ironically, the only dish we really felt "meh" about was the state bird dish itself - which was over-breaded and a bit dry. We opted for very few ordering items, preferring to catch carts as they went by, adding to the fun. The teens loved it. Sure, the place is crowded and noisy - but that is largely because the food is excellent and people are excited about the food and to share in a manner we don't see in most restaurants. We would absolutely come again.
Be the first to ReplyJust average
The concept is neat but we found the food to be extremely sub par so I wouldnโt say it was a great place to eat. The service was also only so soโฆwe had to ask to see a menu to see what food had not been brought around
Be the first to ReplyGood, certainly not great
Duck liver mousse was outstanding and the brisket dumplings were also quite good. Smoked trout was good as well as lamb tartare. The commandables or larger plates fell apart a bit. The Quail - for which the place is named - was terrible. Breading was very thick and clumsy and the whole thing was tough as nails. I wish I had known yuba was tofu skin, my mistake, it tasted like tofu skin so there you go. The steak was the one bright spot of the larger plates. Wines were interesting and while perhaps a touch pricey for what they are, aren't unreasonable. Overall a bit meh.
Be the first to ReplyDisappointing
Itโs all hype. For a restaurant that is always booked and almost impossible to secure a reservation, we had really high expectations. As you walk in, the open kitchen looks great but after you are seated at your table, the place has no atmosphere (felt like a cafeteria). The food was hit or miss. We had 8 items and only liked 2 of them (the duck liver mousse and lamb dumplings were very good). Rest of it was blah - felt like trying too hard by mixing ingredients that really didnโt do it for us. And there are much better places in San Francisco where you can spend $150 p/p and have a much better meal and experience.
Be the first to ReplyDelicious food.
The food was delicious. The starters were excellent. We ordered albacore, squid and cauliflower, all was delicious. The star dish was the fried quail and the steak. We enjoyed the evening The noise level is high
Be the first to ReplyDisappointed, food is so-so and bad service
It was October 1st and we had a 5:30pm reservation at the patio. The food was actually so-so, our friend who took us there was also disappointed, you can hardly find any squid in a "charred squid salad" (see photo)! And the service? Our server claimed he's the assistant general manager, he totally forgot about my husband's second glass of wine; when asked, NOT apologizing! Assistant General Manager? When he took off for his break without telling us, the person who took over briefly told us he's the manager. I guess there's no real server working here? In any case, not impressed at all with the food and the service.
Be the first to ReplyDisappointed, really small proportions
Disappointed, I went to this place with huge expectations based on the good reviews it has, the reality is that the proportions are minimum, example: bird provisions (one of the best dishes) are just 2 tiny little chicken wings the price above 22 dollars and this are not the best wings in my life for sure, ordered another dumpling with one 2 really small dumplings for another 20 bucks, total it was $50 bucks and I was not gonna be ordering more little proportions to get to a $200 check, went to another restaurant instead.
Be the first to ReplyNot as good as we had hoped
We booked this ahead figuring that you can't go wrong with a Michelin noted restaurant. The food was good and well blended flavors but definitely not the experience we had hoped. Our favorite of the night was the sauerkraut pancakes. Sound weird, right? I assure you, this is s a must try. This starter for us though was the highlight of the meal. Duck dumpling and the whole game bird were well prepared but were not seasoned as well as anticipated and the sides were average. We had several better meals on this trip from far less expectations and price.
Be the first to ReplyAmazing Food, Beer and Wine only
The restaurant itself is very casual and plain. They are not currently doing the dim sum presentation, but the food on the menu is out of this world. We had quail eggs, trout and chips, lamb meatballs, and the signature quail dish. They were all done in a unique fashion, with scrumptious flavors. Every thing is to share.
Be the first to ReplyGreat Food in a relaxed atmosphere
We like to hit a Michelin star restaurant on our travels and State Bird Provisions came across our attention in an article titled something like the most affordable Michelin star restaurant in America. Lucky for us it is located in San Francisco - where we were headed in a month's time. Then the question became, were they open? They WERE in fact open and taking reservations. FYI, as of this writing, early May, there seem to be two San Franciscos right now...the tourist one and the resident one. In the tourist one you can hear the grass grow! Not even the cable cars are running. In the resident one, like on a weeknight at State Bird Provisions, the place was full with locals having a great night out.
OK, to the details: The buzz was casual while the service was smart and attentive by the staff. Our server was great and gave good advice on questions we asked. The food was mostly delicious! My one reservation was the overwhelming use of poppy seeds on the buckwheat pancakes! It spoiled the dish as all you could taste was the strong poppy seed flavor and the actual seeds interfered with the subtlety of the other elements. Don't let that dissuade you - the meal was worth it. Rely on your server as well help in your selections. My favorite dish? I'd have to say the brown butter cake for dessert.
accompanying photos: the menu, the garlic fry bread, black sesame duck dumplings, the REMAINS of the April cover bird & the quail (sorry, forget a before picture as they were too good to wait to tuck into) and the brown butter cake with chocolate cinnamon mousse, strawberry and buckwheat ginger. Right?
waves of creativity are carted
waves of creativity are carted to our table, as food scientists guide us through the chemistry which is happening before us. I couldnโt find fault in the food, staff was spot. It is a bit tight in space or others would say comfy.
Be the first to ReplyStunning food, great value
Stunning food, great value if you are careful.
This is a real gem. The use of โfood traysโ with delicacies to delight and inspire means you can manage the cost. Every tantalising morsel can be eaten or you can be selective. The main menu also excites. Delicious!
State Bird Provisions never fails
My husband and I have been here several times and it is the place we keep returning to. The food is consistently delicious, familiar with a twist of creativity and there is an obsession with quality ingredients and delivering excellence. We enjoy all their signature fare and their new offerings. The service is fantastic and unlike many restaurants where there is an attitude from staff they could not be more helpful, thoughtful and clearly enjoy their roles. We go every few months and keep coming back. We had our wedding dinner at Progress next door as well in 2018 and again they delivered on all levels from menu, food and service. I applaud the founders of State Bird and all the people who work there for all their creativity, culinary expertise and service. Thank you.
Be the first to ReplySo good, so much fun!
State bird is Good, really good. 1 Michelin Star.
Dim sum-appetizers-tapas-small plates...However you describe it. Iโll simply call it DAPS.
Trays of DAPS rotating thru the restaurant as well as an menu. Foodie style and creative choices.
We had the DAPS. Tables are close enough to talk with neighbors about the choices. Not cheap, but not bad for SF.
Locals and tourists.
So good. So much fun.
