We had a dinner here. Stirrups is the upscale restaurant in the main hotel, the Equestrian Hotel. Service was very good. Our only complaints? The hostess couldn't lift her head off the computer screen at check-in to acknowledge us with eye contact nor did she pull out the chair from the table when seating us. The waitress and her assistant were equally very good. A couple minor things they didn't do. We had to refill our own wine glasses from the bottle that was ordered. We were also never offered dessert or coffee after dinner. The food was also very good. From quality to preparation to portion size to presentation. One minor issue was the shrimp cocktail. It had some sort of spice seasoning on it. That was not listed on the menu. I think it ruined the shrimp cocktail. I would also consider changing the presentation of the shrimp cocktail. The bowl it is served in takes up a lot of table space, especially if there are multiple appetizers/first courses. I also would have liked for the shrimp cocktail to be served on dry ice, creating a little bit of a "wow" like Truluck's. The wine list has to be one of the largest wine lists in central Florida outside Orlando and Tampa. With that said, the list was very heavy on red wine and a little light on white wine. In terms of white wine, the list was almost exclusively California whites and European whites. Nothing else. We thought there might be some more New World whites. Virginia chardonnay and viognier, New York riesling, South African chenin blanc, Australian riesling, etc. All of that was missing. We thought the wine list could be better presented than in plastic sleeves. That felt a little cheap. But our big issue was the pricing. Yes, it's a 5-star hotel. Yes, it's a high-end restaurant. But the prices on the wine list were overpriced. The hotel is in Ocala. $38 for a glass of non-vintage Veuve Clicquot is outrageous even by Miami or New York standards. Same for Decoy chardonnay at $18. A bottle of Decoy is $13-$17 at most stores. Most restaurants would price a glass of Decoy at $9-$12. A bottle of G.H. Mumm for $140. That's about $20 overpriced. We thought the atmosphere could be improved. The lights could be turned down a little, the music could be improved (ideally a live piano player), and there should be white tablecloths. At the price point of the restaurant, you expect tablecloths. On the whole, all things considered, Stirrups was very good. We would consider returning.
