The best sushi it's literally melt in your mouth.
If you love good sushi this is the place to go absolutely perfect
Be the first to ReplySugarfish is perfect for date nights and the ambience says
Sugarfish is perfect for date nights and the ambience says it all. From the dim lighting to the intimate layout, it's suitable for couples and family outings alike. The food on the other hand was at it's best, decent. Rolls and nigiri are served A-la-carte or via courses. I chose the Sushi Nozawa Trust Me, which included Sea Bream & Toro as well. The sushi was great, however the rice was a bit overpowering - but enjoyable nonetheless. I also ordered Nigiri on the side as an ending course and it was delicious. Our waiter Scott was attentive and provided us with recommendations, which I loved! All in all, Sugarfish is decent for what you pay for but there are better options out there.

Walking into Sugarfish, we were struck by two things: one, the server who greeted us was really nice and two, it was really dark inside the restaurant. How could anyone dining in see what they were eating? We ordered takeout and waited about 45 minutes. This location seems to have many orders via their online ordering system as the kitchen was constantly churning out orders for takeout. Incidentally our order also included a mandatory 16% gratuity that was added to the bill. The best part of this takeout experience has to be the guided instructions on how to enjoy each piece of nigiri. We had such a fun time trying to identify each fish to pair them with the correct sauces. It was tasty and educational! As far as quality, we were disappointed in the quality of the rice. Grains of rice stuck to the takeout box, our hands and fell apart when introduced to any of the sauces. On the upside, the fish was delicious and the portion size was filling.
Be the first to ReplyBest sushi I have ever had.
When it comes to sushi I am extremely picky and this place hands down has the most amazing fresh fish. I live in San Diego and when I go to the LA area I always go and have the "trust me." Run don't walk you will not regret it, trust me :)
Be the first to ReplyGood and consistent.
I know that some people think sugarfish is the best sushi in LA. I don't agree, but it's still good.

I am used to the smaller proprietor sushi restaurants where the fish is fresh cut and excellent. I was disappointed in Sugarfish as the pieces seemed like they were prepared in some central kitchen and trucked to the restaurant. The food tasted like a fast-food chain version of sushi -- which it is.
Be the first to ReplyThe price difference between the "Don't Think Just Eat"
The price difference between the "Don't Think Just Eat" ($59) vs. "The Nozawa Trust Me" ($46) is not worth it. The $13 difference is two pieces of anago, which is not fantastic enough for me to pay for it again. I will stick with "The Nozawa Trust Me" set moving forward. Nonetheless, Sugarfish is amazing. The nigiri is so fresh and melts in my mouth. It's one of those restaurants where I keep thinking about the next time I can dine there again. This thought occurs after the last item has been served. Really recommend this restaurant for date night :)

Very busy place,i was surprised to see a line at lunch waiting for it to open. Everything was very efficient, they had the starter plates already made up. The fist was very fresh and flavorful. My only complaint, was the balls of sushi rice served with the Nigiri were very loose, shouldn't fall apart being picked up with chopsticks. I want my fish to touch soy sauce, not my rice falling into it.

TL;DR: fish and rice temperature was off-putting/hard to eat; most of their fish is masked with some sauce or seasoning. This place is super popular, so maybe it just isn't a spot that caters to my and my husband's palates. Came here close to opening time, and was able to get seated very quickly. They don't take reservations, so expect a wait as this place filled up fast. SERVICE: was very friendly but seemed inexperienced. Forgot things, brought duplicates to various tables, spilled wasabi and ginger dish near my husband (thankfully, none of the juice got on his clothes though). But that did not affect our experience.I guess it is their thing to have warm sushi rice? For us, it was too warm/hot. With the high temperature of the rice, the fish temperature was affected, which made it lukewarm. Also the rice would not stick together under the nigiri, so made eating difficult.FOOD (did the Nozawa Trust Me and a couple a la carte): Nozawa Trust Me: ~Edamame (3/5): basic~Tuna Sashimi with ponzu and chives (4/5): different types of tuna in a tangy sweet sauce. Pretty good~Albacore with ponzu and chives (3.5/5)~Seabream with citrus salt (3/5)~Salmon with toasted sesame seeds (3/5)~Toro handroll (2/5): flavorless; this roll the rice was noticeably HOT~Otoro (3/5) ~Yellowtail with lemon (4/5)~Hirame with yuzu ponzu (3/5)~Blue and Dungeness crab hand roll (1/5): so much mayo in the crab mix. Couldn't taste any crab at all. Couldn't stomach more than one bite.A la carte:~Bay scallop (1/5): again, slathered in mayo; couldn't taste anything else~Hokkaido scallop (3/5): why so much sauce on it?~Lobster sushi (1/5): So slimy and not freshSo overall, maybe SUGARFISH just isn't for us. The warm/hot rice's affect on the fish temperature and the rice falling apart when trying to eat; all the items having some type of sauce or seasoning which masked the flavor of the fish; just not to our liking, personally.

I have only ever heard of Sugarfish and everyone I've talked to have different reviews of this place. Finally, we had a girls date night and we ended up here. They have set menus and a la carte as well. We went with a set menu and also ordered a few additional from a la carte. The flavors, freshness of the fish, hand rolls, even the rice was all so good!! My favorite was the toro hand roll and the salmon nigiri. Parking was easy, as I found meter parking, but there are also several lots around that you can park at. Overall, great sushi place and can't wait to go back!
Be the first to ReplyFirst time at sugarfish and it was so good.
Really enjoyed the customer service and we got our table quite fast. I enjoyed the sushi and everything came out all together at the same time. Would definitely come back again, good business lunch spot too
Be the first to ReplyExcellent food, excellent service and a lot for the price.
We ordered the Trust Me Course and it was amazing. Definitely worth a visit.

Parking: Always pretty difficult in downtown but if you can find the closest parking garage, just park there and save yourself the stress. Food: Believe it or not, I had never eaten sushi until I entered college. And I feel so blessed to say that Sugarfish was my first ever sushi! I fell in love with the flavor and texture of raw fish and have grown to appreciate the famous warm rice of this place. No other sushi spot, that I know of, serves their cold sushi with warm rice. Really elevated the experience and makes Sugarfish much more unique. Price is pretty steep but I think the dining experience makes it worth it. Ambiance: As always, the interior ambiance never disappoints. I enjoyed dining here during an afternoon because we were seated near a window. However it does get super dark later in the evening time.
Be the first to Replyvisiting from the san jose and this was my first time
visiting from the san jose and this was my first time trying sugarfish and "omakase" in general. at first i was skeptical about it after looking at the yelp pictures, i felt like i wouldn't be full after eating. i came into the restaurant with the mindset of not liking it because of how basic it all seemed. oh how i was wrong, the meal completely changed my mind and i left stuffed. *Experience*came on a sunday night about 45 minutes before closing, we put our names in the list and was told it would be about 50 minutes. realized we left our IDs at home for alcohol, we came back late about 20 minutes before closing and they still sat us surprisingly. i kind of felt rush eating since i was served the next plate before i even finished the present one, at one point i had 4 different plates on table at once. i understand though because we arrived near closing time :) my boyfriend and i got the "nozawa trust me" set and the daily special that night was the toro which was the main reason i got it over the regular "trust me". if the daily special was something else, i would've ordered the regular "trust me".all the fish tasted fresh and the rice was served warm. i love the way they season the rice, it really compliments the fish. i think for $45 i got about a total of 12 pieces of nigiri, two hand rolls, tuna sashimi, and a side of edamame.*The Nozawa Trust Me*-Edamame: it's edamame, you can't really go wrong with it-Tuna Sashimi: the sauce was really good and they gave me really nice pieces of tuna with great marbling(i'll talk about the nigiri that were memorable for me because i honestly forgot how the others tasted)-Salmon: great texture and soft, tasted really fresh-Yellowtail: loved the citrus aftertaste from it, it made it taste really refreshing -Bay Scallop: super fresh and juicy-Toro Handroll and Dungeness crab handroll: both pretty good, i don't remember a lot about the toro but the crab handroll flavor and texture was great -Daily Special (Bluefin Toro): my favorite from the night, melted in your mouth, great texture*A la Carte*-sweet shrimp: really good and fresh, didn't really wow me, i wouldn't order it again-uni: super creamy and rich, i've had bad experiences with uni before where it was super fishy but it was so fresh here, i loved it! *NOTE*- Bill: This place has a 16% service charge and also doesn't take tip. I'm guessing the 16% includes the tip which was fine by me :) -Parking: I was advised from the website to park at the Laz parking garage about a block away. it was about $7 for parking
Be the first to ReplyLove love love this place, always consistent and delicious.
I usually order the trust me and that is more than enough food. The salmon melts in your mouth. Wait time is always different but entire party must be there to get seated.
Be the first to ReplyMy first time actually sitting inside the restaurant (vs.
taking to go) and I was a bit disappointed in the staff. I'm not sure if we didn't meet the restaurant's standards via looks, but our money works just the same as everyone else's. Immediately felt the animosity from the host to our server. I think it's a huge turn off when you're treated as less than for not "looking the part". The tip is also included in the bill so there is little to no incentive to be kind/polite. Once they realized we were ordering 300$ worth of food, they began to lighten up. Needless to say, the food is still amazing and the only thing worth the 3/5 star review. To go will probably be our choice moving forward.
Be the first to ReplyMy favorite location is in DTLA.
I usually order "Don't Think, Just Eat" Delicious sushi. Amazing service. What else can you ask for?
Be the first to ReplyThis was my first time ever getting sushi.
(Crazy thought coming from a person who grew up in Hawaii!) For my first experience, the food was all good. I realized that scallops are not my thing, so I will ask for a different fish to substitute for that next time. I also realized that I really liked the rolls. The restaurant had a nice atmosphere, but the waiters didn't come around too often, so I was left waiting quite a while for my water to be re-filled multiple times and had to finally try to flag someone down.

avg. food for a $70/ppl. Only noticeable course is the Toro but it is still sub-par for a $14 price tag.

Probably one of the best sushi restaurants I've been to in the states. I came here on a Saturday night thinking there was going to be a long wait, but my partner and I got seated the moment we arrived. We ordered the Don't Think. Just Eat. trust me combo and it was to die for. The fish is so fresh and practically melts in your mouth. I would come back again and again.
