Good food extortionate service charge added to bar food
The food is good, however be careful when ordering food to eat at the bar as a 12.5% service charge has just been introduced, which is a little steep to pay over £5.00 on top of the price to have then delivered to you. Shame for a pub serving locals.

This used to be a great place but now my advice is dont bother. Uncommunicative and poorly trained staff. Would love to review food but but didnt want to stay due to staff incompetence .Great shame
Be the first to ReplyExpensive
Attractive pub, friendly and good staff. However food expensive for standard quality and dislike additional fixed service charge which also added to expensive drinks if they are not paid in cash separately. Yes this is ‘voluntary’ but embarrassing to remove.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent Sunday Lunch
Just been for Easter Sunday lunch with my mother. She had the skate for Main course, and I had the pork roast. In addition I had ice cream for dessert. Firstly the food was superb, well presented, generous portions and delicious. The venue itself has great decor and surroundings with a nice atmosphere to dine in. The staff were welcoming, friendly and attentive. Overall I would recommend this for value for money, high quality dining. It also makes a great destination for a drink in the bar.
Be the first to ReplyAverage Lunch menu bit expensive
Disappointed with our burgers over cooked and overpriced. The beer was well kept the Maldon ale always excellent. The sweet was nice and unusual.
Be the first to ReplyGreat lunch - thank you!
Excellent lunch today, thank you. My mother and I had the ragout from your pasta selection: best pasta dish I have had, perfection! My wife had the roast squash- again excellent. She was particularly pleased with your thoughtful attention to her gluten free requirements. All in all a fantastic lunch. Dedham is lucky to have you!

I have stayed many times at the Sun Inn : the selection of beers, ales and wines is fabulous, the menu is varied and cooked with flair and dedication, the lounge is warm and inviting, and the rooms utterly charming. The staff are thoughtful and considerate. I can't recommend it highly enough. 10 out of 5 stars.

Great pre Christmas family lunch ! The Sun Inn always delivers. Seafood , traditional pies were great and as ever the pasta (Ziti ,sausage and mushroom) was spot on,could have been in Italy!! Lovely ambience and and attentive staff ensured the 5 * experience! Bravo

Very spacious and clean room with all the essentials you need. Both dinner and breakfast were exceptional. Staff are very friendly and helpful.
Be the first to ReplyGood food, nice decor
Visited for dinner with friends, been meaning to visit here for years as heard it was good. I would say I was slightly disappointed, the staff don’t really acknowledge you at all and we would probably have drunk more if they had checked wether we needed anything else. The area we were seated in was dimly lit so for the older eye reading the small print menu was a challenge 😃 The food was lovely and sufficient, it’s top end of pub grub prices I would say and has a lovely sized and varied menu. The food was beautifully presented and very flavoursome. They do lite bites and coffee for dessert which I always love to see. One of our party had the local East Bergholt ice cream for dessert and said it was lovely - she had chocolate and peanut butter - it came out as two scoops of ice cream, no wafer, no presentation I would come again and would love to try lunch here next
Be the first to ReplyGreat value 2 or 3 course lunch
Very busy/popular Sunday lunch. Eating one of narrow range of roasts opens up an excellent range of starters and puddings. Cheery bustling service. Lots of different shaped tables suiting all sorts of combinations of groups in several different rooms. Excellent wine list including several odd bottle bin ends. We'll be back.
Be the first to ReplyDisappointing breakfast experience
Went for breakfast. Didn’t appear to have my booking (although I was phoned at 21.40?! the night before to confirm). Was placed on a table which was not made up (asked to move to a table that was made up but was told no… then were not given glasses or cutlery that were on the made up tables?! so we had to take them ourselves) Food quality was good but we had to ask for the buffet to be refilled with water, juice and some other items, as it had run out when we got there. Based on service and experience will not be back. Very disappointing :0( …

I arrived in the bar on time and was kept waiting for almost 10 minutes to be seated, despite me being the only person there. A woman was talking on the phone ignoring me and eventually I was seated. It was obvious there was insufficient staff to run the restaurant and bar (3 people) and again I was not asked if I wanted a drink for almost 10 minutes and then it was not brought to the table for over 15mins! The food order was eventually taken 40 minutes after I sat down…The plate of bread and oil, given when people are having a drink while waiting for their meal arrived just after the starter was placed on the table…I was dining with a friend and her starter arrived on a bed of small rocks, with the tuilles almost has hard as them! My starter was as it should be. Then the main courses arrived…We had both chosen pasta as the other main courses were around £25 each (outrageous for a country pub) and regretted our decision. My gnoccheti was very undercooked and swimming in thin liquid with lumps of ragu. It needed to be cooked further so that the it absorbed the sauce- there was nothing glossy and wonderful here, I would have expected better at a Wetherspoons! My friend’s pasta, puttanesca, was similarly in a thin brown sauce full of olives with exactly two capers. Neither of us had had ever had such awful pasta dishes and we eat out at least twice a week. As we had been told the table had to be returned by 2 pm (the parking outside was only available for 2 hours) and it was already 1.30pm we ate the food but I left a lot of pasta and told the waitress( when she finally appeared) that is was badly undercooked. She said sorry. No time for desserts and frankly didn’t want to risk it, so I paid at the bar and when asked if everything was ok, I replied no it had not been and we had both chosen badly. No apology. This used to be a wonderful pub with extremely good pub food- it’s now serves pretentious, overpriced food without sufficient staff to make sure one can return the table in the one hour 30 minute slot one is given to eat!

Dined there yesterday but service was very disappointing. Waited more than an hour for our main course, staff failed to clear the plates after starters and when questioned about delay, glibly stated it would be a few minutes without even checking with the kitchen. I am sorry to say but service left a lot to be desired. It looked as if bar snacks were being given preference over restaurant orders.

The Sun is a lovely old building. Very comfortable. The staff are very efficient and friendly. However, my partner found his vegetarian dish ‘Orzotto, Roast Squash, Girolle Mushroom, Cote Hill Blue Cheese, Pickled Shallot’ lacking in vegetables (one piece of squash) and taste and he couldn’t finish it. I thought the wine at £21 a bottle expensive, and the pudding ‘Warm Tosier Chocolate & Hazelnut Tart, Salted Caramel Ice Cream’ very odd and actually unpleasant. There is a fairly concise menu so the choices really need to be good.
Be the first to ReplyUnwelcoming
Only popped into the sun inn for a drink, the barmaid was so very unwelcoming we went back to the Marlborough which is so much more welcoming and friendly!
Be the first to ReplyWonderful lunch
Took my mum here today for the first time and we enjoyed the most wonderful lunch. Charming staff, lovely cosy surroundings and really great food. The mushroom pate was a delight as was the pasta dish. We will be back!
Be the first to ReplyOverpriced for underwhelming
The food was ok, totally overpriced for what it was. The roast beef wasn’t a good cut and cost way too much. The orange and lemonade was £6! When you pay nearly £20 for a roast it should be spot on but it was underwhelming.

We were camping locally with friends and this had been recommended to us. We had a lovely table in a buzzing pub restaurant which was doing on a roaring trade on a warm Friday night. Fab service, delicious starters and mains. The pasta dishes were very impressive as was the lamb koftas. We had no room for pudding! Only slight negative was that the children’s menu was a bit basic and the burger when it arrived defeated both children as it was enormous.
Be the first to ReplyNice pub
Lovely old fashioned pub. Very clean. Friendly service. Food was a bit overpriced, but I suppose that's because of the location.
Be the first to ReplyBeautiful place shame food couldn’t compare
Lovely surroundings, lots of thought gone into the design. You would never guess from the outside of the pub you would go into a vintage oasis. Staff very polite and helpful. The let down was the quality of the food. The menu sounds posh but what was put in front of me was bland, cheap meat, watery and worst of all I found a number of bones! Shame as it could of been 5 stars
Be the first to ReplyNice menu and great service in lovely pub
We popped in here on the way home from a long journey and initially we were just going to have a drink but ended up staying to eat. The service and welcome were very friendly, the pub also has an outside terrace and then a nicely lit garden right at the back, behind the car park. Food was very good, with plenty of options from casual to more formal, and Dedham is a lovely little village. The pub is directly opposite the impressive looking church and there are rooms above.
