Sushi 295 Mercer New York Reviews from The Last Year
Got the premium set, A5 wagyu, and miso soup.
The fish (especially salmon - absolute melt in your mouth), uni, and wagyu were delightful. They use real wasabi root which is really important for me and shows me that you care about the details. Got so lucky with the walk in (make a reso if you want to eat there) and the ambience was so intimate and pleasant because the service staff were so friendly. A true 10/10 restaurant for me and will easily become my go to solo dining spot for a pick-me-up or as a personal reward.
Amazing!!!!
It’s a Friday night and we’re coming into Toronto from a drive 3 hours away, however the traffic was unforgiving, so make that trip a little more than 4. Reservation was for 6pm, gps says 6:30 arrival. We called up Hey Lucy to explain we’d be late, and the gentleman was more than willing to hold our table until we arrived (on a Friday night)! We are seated right away (when we arrived at 6:40) and already knew what we wanted for dinner. Ohhh, and we’re a table of 6. The waitress was incredible, and we had our food in front of us by 7:10. Gone is the anxiety of not being able to eat before our 8pm show at the Royal Alex! Everything was on point from making the reservation to posting the bill, and I can’t thank Hey Lucy’s staff enough!! Certainly a hidden gem!! We will be back!!
Heads up to those with noise sensitivity
My husband and I reserved a table at Hey Lucy before our show at the Princess of Wales Theatre. The food was okay, as was the service. Just a warning to those with any kind of noise sensitivity. We sat at a table across from the end of the bar, where they stack plastic bins on shelves for dirty dishes. Every couple of minutes or so, a stack of dishes would be dropped into the bin, creating a very jarring sound of crashing glass. All I could focus on was watching out for every server coming by with plates, so that I could cover my ears to alleviate some of the noise. It didn't lend to great conversation with my husband over dinner, as I had to plug my ears much of the time. Surely there is a better way to clear dirty dishes than to drop stacks of them into bins where customers are trying to have a pleasant meal.
This is my favorite sushi spot in Manhattan.
It's intimate, only about 4 seats inside, with some space outside. Extremely well priced and fresh, their uni is amazing as well as the fatty toro special roll with pickled radish. There are no cocktails here, the focus is on the fish. It's a great spot to bring a friend or family member to show off what the N.Y.C. food scene has to offer and it's close enough to Washington Square that it's worth it to grab takeout if there's no seating.
My first impression: Decent, but not my favorite.
Sushi was slightly smaller compared to other sushi places that are selling similar sushi sets/prices. There was more rice than fish. I would give it another try but a different set (wasn't a fan of the toro taku roll).
Surly server - should leave her job! Spoiled the lunch
This should have been fabulous - a lively restaurant, packed with customers. We were going to a play and walking in the front door the smell of Italian cooking was wonderful. Our server (told us her name was Molly but the bill said Sam, 20 something, long dark pony tail, strapless top, attractive if she had once smiled) was inattentive and rude. When our coffee and tea order came we had to ask (had asked in our original order) 3 times for honey for the tea, then for sugar and cream. Almost slamming the cream and sugar down and cracking “you’re welcome!” Her attitude was so off that I asked if we had done something to annoy her. She did check to see if the “first taste” was good but I don’t think she even bothered to stay for our answer. The restaurant was busy and we had made reservations but it is very close to the theatre so busy must be pretty common. Her treatment of us was deplorable. The food was delicious: pizza and a beet salad. I thanked the chef especially afterwards. I might go back again but would be specific about no Molly / Sam. We did leave her a nice cash tip. She should find a different career behind scenes and not serving customers.
This was such an amazing experience, truly.
I have been to Nobu and I would choose Sushi 295 over it EVERY SINGLE TIME. The staff is amazing, the fish is amazing, I am so glad we stumbled upon it because it will be my husband and I's go to from here on out. Amazing staff, and amazing fish, WOW!!
Great little spot across from the theatre but make reservations.
Cute little spot across from Princess of Wales theatre. Seating is tight but it is a unique spot. Pizzas looked delicious but settled on salads. The pizza would easily feed 2 with side salad and there were some very appealing choices. steak salad was recommended and it was delicious. Steak cooked perfectly. Caesar was also very good. Wi e on Thursdays was $6 and it was very good. Service was prompt and pleasant
I thought the price of the food was fair.
Ordered takeout through DD. The presentation could have been better but that might the nature of delivery. Got the sushi premium and the spicy tuna avocado roll. enjoyed the rolls but the sushi piece were only okay. Wouldn't call it affordable omakase quality but should say it's above the average sushi place. Probably would recommend more of the rolls. The sushi piece didn't feel that great quality
HEY LUCY! for GREAT FOOD AND SERVICE and LOCATION LOCATION LOCATION
Five of us had reservations at Hey Lucy for lunch before we headed off to see Book of Mormon at Mirvish Theatre which is an extremely short walk across the street which was the main reason we chose it. It's also a 10-12 minute walk from Union Station. Since we took the GO Train in, that was another bonus reason to give Hey Lucy a try. Checking out the menu their wood fired pizza's looked great. Tasty starters with great choices and tons of Pasta's. Starters to the table were Wood Fired Garlic Bread with Cheese, Mac & Cheese Balls and the Grilled Calamari. For our mains I ordered the Sausage Supreme others had the Margherita and the Chicken and Brie and the Pancetta Gorgonzola Rigatoni. We ordered drinks and a bottle of wine was shared but I had the Spicey Caesar which was deliciously well named. The starters came and all were good especially my Grilled Calamari. Garlic Bread very tasty and the Mac & Cheese Balls were ok. A couple of folks shared the tasty Pear and Goat Cheese salad. The pizzas started to come out and we all realized we had underestimated the size of pizza and each one easily could have shared between two people. But each had a great thick border crust but thin main. Focus was on freshness and flavour, everyone agreeing they were gourmet quality. The Pancetta Gorgonzola Rigatoni was perfectly cooked and was gobbled up in a flash. Perfect big serving. Somehow a couple of the group shared a delicious slice of cheese cake. Our service was first rate. We let her know on arrival that we were going to the theatre to avoid any issues. They were courteous and efficient. Our seat was at the back with a great view of the wood oven at work. The place was full so make reservations! A classic narrow style restaurant with unique decor that has nothing to do with the "Lucy" I thought it was going to have. But that made no difference to our experience. Just a heads up, it is close quarters and pretty loud and fun when full. Priced right! Five Stars across the board for "HEY LUCY!"
4.5 stars rounded up to 5. Good quality and I'll say good
4.5 stars rounded up to 5. Good quality and I'll say good value by Manhattan standards though not inexpensive. I enjoyed the 36.95 sushi regular lunch special which was delivered on time.
Amazingly good.
Tiny seating area (bar that seats 4 max)....so not the most ideal but once seated, everyone is super nice. Sushi was really good. Clearly the word is out because their takeout and delivery business seemed non stop.
Most intimate omakase experiences i have had! Only seats 3
Most intimate omakase experiences i have had! Only seats 3 but they do tons of take out orders all night. Got varieties of sashimi and rolls. The fish tasted very fresh. Perfect for a low key night but reservations are super limited!
Amazing food and service sushi es really fresh and
Amazing food and service sushi es really fresh and delicious. It's pretty small but that's not a problem u definitely need a reservation.
Hands down some of the best sushi we have had in the city!
Hands down some of the best sushi we have had in the city! This is a small and quaint spot, there are only 4 seats so you absolutely must make a reservation if you plan to eat in. I saw a ton of takeout orders coming out while we were eating. The chefs were phenomenal. We got the sushi for two, and every single piece of sushi was excellent. The uni was some of the best I have had- so fresh and creamy, no bitter after taste. The eel was phenomenal, you can tell they use quality ingredients. The toro was melt in your mouth buttery! I cannot wait to come back. The scallop also melted on your palate. Chefs were so friendly too.
Super fresh and melts in your mouth sushi! Good value for
Super fresh and melts in your mouth sushi! Good value for $38. Ordered to-go and it was finished pretty fast. They still make your order on the omakase counter in front of you even for takeout, so you can see them make every piece fresh.
Placed an order in advance for take out.
Ordered the sushi regular. It was already ready by the time I got there. The place is very small so I'm glad I ordered for takeout. The fish was very fresh and juicy. I'd def stop by again and order other boxes or even dine in. Washington square Park is nearby if you're looking for public seating.
This place is great, it's almost a sushi speakeasy.
They have a counter for 4 if you want to go in but be mindful it's BYOB and has no bathroom onsite but it's an hour so you should be able to make it through. The sushi is fantastic, the quality of the fish is awesome and the chef has worked at Nobu and Masa previously. Definitely make a reservation if you plan to go but ordering to go / or delivery it's also fantastic and the pricing is also great.
Hit the spot!
Charming little place. Good food with great service and decent prices. We always stop here when visiting Toronto and we recommend to all.
Quick bite, quality everything.
The grilled calamari appetizer was excellent. Nicely mixed drinks as well. Wish we had time to try the woodfired pizza, but we were waiting on the reservation elsewhere. Will go back!
Great find in the Entertainment District near the theater too!
We were here Friday night and Sunday night. When we returned on Sunday night, George, the bartender, remembered our drink selection from Friday night! Impressive! We returned because the drinks at the bar were great on Friday night and Sunday night was the best too. George is a great bartender and we will return to enjoy the food selection as well. Great find in the Entertainment District, close to the theatre too!
Passive Agressive Waitress
My review is based on a recent visit to Hey Lucy’s on the evening of Wednesday, July 26th. Our waitress, Shelby was initially very pleasant and attentive to our party of 4. We had some additional friends who wanted to meet up with us around 8 and we shared with Shelby that we would have 2 additional people join our party and if we can sit them at the bar or be moved to a larger table. Shelby advised that they were packed and how the area by the bar was the hostess stand but once the party of 2 that was sitting next to us departed, we could bring the tables together to accommodate the larger party. Our guests arrived and Shelby did a complete 180, being rude to our party and additional guests by yelling at them to get out of the walkway, making passive aggressive comments to the party of 2 about how they were not being pushed out of the establishment. I politely spoke with the party of 2 and reassured them that we were NOT trying to push them to finish quicker – they advised that they were done and were awaiting their bill. Ultimately, Shelby seemed very disturbed, and I again asked if there was an issue as her demeanor towards our table had shifted. She noted that since we were a party of six there was an automatic tip of 20%, and we could speak to her manager - mind you our two guests had just sat down and did not order water before she made that proclamation. Of note, a party arrived and sat in the same area we were advised was the hostess stand approximately 5 minutes before our guests arrived. I noted that she was the one who offered the table next to us and was made aware of the guests arrived well ahead of their arrival, she proceeded to tell me and our party that she was deescalating the situation and would have her manager speak with us. My friend and supervisor proceeded to speak with the manager at the bar and reiterated the fact that we communicated the request for additional room and how initially our reservation experienced no issues but as soon as our party arrived, Shelby began to be passive aggressive and made our entire party uncomfortable with her inability to have a discussion like adults if there was an issue with any of the requests we made. The manager offered gift certificates and everything else BUT addressing the issue of her employee being rude and flippant with our party and automatically proclaiming her tip when she didn’t earn it. My point and reason for this review is the entire group was taken aback of her tone and failed attempt in deescalating a situation that she could have addressed by not offering a table or simply saying NO to our request to add additional folks to our party. We will NOT patron this location again and hope that no one ELSE gets to experience the same disrespect that we experienced yesterday.
Nice Bar Near The Princess of Wales Theatre
Nice bar on the south side of King St. W., west of John St. They have a nice bar with the front opened to the street for fresh air. We went on July 14th around 10:00 p.m., so not too busy as the theatre crowd (this is kitty corner from the Princess of Wales Theatre) had not let out. We opted for the rooftop bar, which was nicely set up and decorated, but zero views other than skyscrapers around you. Very nice place though and very comfortable. Beers (large Moretti $9.75 and large Creemore $9) were good and typical of downtown pricing. Very friendly and efficient staff, so we had a good time. Use the bathroom before you go upstairs though - it's a bit of a climb and the bathrooms are in the basement! LOL!!
HOT
Waitress was fabulous. Tried to make the best of a bad situation but that restaurant was close to 100 degrees. I can’t remember the last time I was that hot and uncomfortable outside let alone inside, in Toronto, eating dinner.
Good service and quickly delivered
Quick service, friendly staff. We sat in the roof top terrace which was a new experience although there is no view there is a nice mural on the wall and the spaghetti carbonara was really tasty

Your bid has been “matched” with a reservation. From the time a reservation has been located, the seller of the reservation must connect with moderator to give transfer information for reservation. If the seller;however, does NOT respond to reservation transfer, then your bid is reprocessed and returns to the first step, which is connecting your request to a reservation.

When it says working on bid, it means there are people looking to fill it.
