The chef is so nice and his food is great
This is definitely one of the better sushi restaurants in Tokyo. Definitely ranks high up.
The chef is very skilled and his wife's family is a market operator in Toyosu fish market. This means that chef Tatsuya has access to the best possible fish and seafood.
This really shows when you sit down. Some of the ingredients are truly A++++ prime the type of quality you may only find at Jiro and a couple of others.
To top it off, the chef is very nice, happy, understanding and helpful. If you have some special requests he will be very glad to do his best to accommodate you.
For example, less rice on the sushi, or sashimi alltogether. No wasabi or no radish etc. He is very cool!
Also he happens to speak a little english which is nice for communication. You can ask some questions and he is able to answer (for example about the cooking method or the fish origin etc).
It is basically run by him and his wife and they do an amazing job. Congratulations.
I highly recommend it!
Amazing experience
We stumbled across this restaurant while researching sushi. It was an amazing experience. The restaurant only seats 8 - it’s extremely cozy. It was hard to find, but we were able to find it after we googled specific instructions (on 3rd floor 3F behind wooden door)
Chef Kuwano speaks a little English and was able to explain to us what we were eating and a few facts about traditional Japanese sushi. We used our hotel concierge to book us reservations ahead of time - highly recommend this!)
The fish was so fresh, his wife was so friendly and polite while serving us, and it was awesome watching him make the sushi. Well worth the price.
Authentic Sushi Experience
Chef Kuwano and his wife made our sushi experience a night to remember. All 8 seats in his establishment were filled and we were the only tourists, which we loved. Despite the language barrier Chef Kuwano will make you feel comfortable and explains each course beautifully. The food was amazing. It was our most expensive night in Tokyo but we would do it again in a heartbeat. Chef and his wife were the most gracious hosts even giving us gifts upon our departure.
Be the first to ReplyA visit to remember
It was a totally over the moon sushi experience for me. Located on the third floor of a building, Sushi Kuwano is hard to find as the restaurant signage is in Japanese.
In a small setting accommodate just enough for 8, or may be 9 diners, Chef Kuwano performs the simple art of making sushi right in front of you.
As you go through your meal personally prepared by the chef, you’ll be surprised everytime a new dish comes because of it freshness, and names of fish you’ve never heard of before. Sometimes, they are very rare and you’re lucky to come in at a right time!
I especially like the sake pairing which comes with different sake for different dish every single time.
Last but not least, Chef Kuwano and his wife are super friendly despite of their English limitation.
I’m super happy to know this place and will definitely come here again if I’m back to Tokyo.
Best meal of Tokyo visit
This is a special sushi restaurant. A third floor dining circle in what looks to be an apartment building (think speakeasy with a better reward). Chef kuwano (who speaks English) stands in the middle of the 9 seat table and serves each guest individually based on the menu selected... which should always be the omekase or set menu. Sake is a soft recommendation - again some of the best I’ve tried (a fellow diner who lived in North America confirmed this). Yeah it’s not inexpensive about $700 usd for two but it earned its Michelin star and sits within the most expensive dining district in Tokyo.
P.s. don’t let a banker named Matsui-San talk you into the soju!!
