Fun, friendly, with one big drawback…
We loved the space and classy interior. The food was good and service friendly and professional. The only negative was the compulsory 20% tip added to our bill. I found this presumptuous for a party of three.
Be the first to ReplyTasty food; service fine but not great; ambience so-so
We really enjoyed our food. My husband ordered the sausages appetizer and liked it. For our main dishes we had the beef stew (nyama mchuzi), which had a little spiciness to it, and the grilled goat (mbuzi kaanga), which was not spicy at all. For side dishes we had jolly rice (tasty with a tiny bit of kick); ugali (completely bland; inoffensive); mokimo (tasty); and collard greens (pretty good). The chocolate cake was very good (not particularly African, but that's okay). The ambience was strange. The music playing was disco music. It made me want to dance, but did not go well with dinner. Fortunately, it was not too loud. They also had a slow strobe light circulating the dining room. Kind of odd. The strange thing was that the overall ambience was sort of lacking, despite all this efforts. I think it was mostly because the main lighting was a bit bright. We didn't really care about all that, but it was a bit strange. The service was just so-so. I think the staff were a bit inexperienced and overly busy; trying hard, but did not have it all quite under control. We got our appetizers and main dishes quickly but then our server got busy upstairs and it took forever for us to get dessert, another drink, and our bill. Fortunately, we were not in a hurry.

Be the first to ReplyRed Beans + Ambiance = Perfection!!!
First off, there are only 2 Vegetarian dishes available: Lentils & Red Beans (both done in a coconut stew) which I choose along w/ the Jollof Rice & friend sweet plantains...this was the best meal during my DMV trip. From flavor, spice level, warm & friendly service to a cozy, relaxing and music filled atmosphere...this was the highlight of my trip. My Mocktail: a Pineapple Mojito was the cherry on top. Can't wait to revisit & looking forward to the new location coming in Manhattan, NY.

We wanted a good and unusual place to celebrate my son's masters graduation from Georgetown and his friend told us about the restaurant and how their interface with the restaurant came through the event they had in their ungrad days. The Taste of Africa. We were not disappointed. The food was great.. especially the barbecued chicken, goat and beef. The vegetables were also okay though bit oily. Overall great place to eat and great vibes.

For a fine dining restaurant with automatic 20% gratuity included on their bill, i was expecting service to be exceptional but it wasn't. We came in after lunch rush on a weekday, only 5 parties in their dining room but it took forever for our order. The food was definitely not worth the price -- a thin portion of chicken breast with 2 sides for $30 and 3 small pieces of lambchops for $45 was just not reasonable especially for a lunch menu. My husband ordered beer and was told both options they have were not available and it was still included on our bill. We had to ask them to take it out. We paid more than $100 for 2 plates and 1 appetizer plus the 20% gratuity. I've tried it once but I won't be back to dine here again.

We lunched here recently with a friend. We were greeted and seated immediately, as we arrived just as they opened. Our server was friendly and kind, recommending various combinations of sides with what we chose to order. A relaxing meal that was delicious. Warmly greeted by various members of the staff. Very clean and comfortable. Highly recommend.

First time at Swahili Village in DC. Reception and service were excellent. Met by host and given choice of table or booth. Service was quick and attentive without being hurrying. Ambiance is pleasant with a lot of wood accents, neutral colors, and large paintings with African motif. Noise level was moderate, could talk with table mates, but still some buzz. Now for the food. We ordered the Swahili Basket as an appetizer as it came with coated and fried potato slices, a samosa, and a Kenyan sausage. For entrees, my wife had the Nyama Kaanga (cubes of beef sauteed with onion, tomatoes, cilantro and spices), Chapati (Kenyan flatbread) and Kabeji (shredded cabbage with carrots, lightly sauteed. I had Kuku Curry (chicken curry), Spinach sauteed with coconut milk and Jollof (rice with tomatoes, onions, vegetables and spices. And for dessert we shared a dish of Mango Mousse. Overall, everything was gently spiced, and well prepared. The Samosa was crunchy and the beef filling was very good, but it could have used a dipping sauce. The Kenyan sausage reminded of Germany, very light flavor and practically no fat. Potato slices were good as well, with a light batter coating that tasted a little of cumin. The curry chicken was again relatively mild, reminding of Indian (American) butter chicken and the spinach was delightful with just a hint of sweetness from the coconut milk. The Jollof was formed into a cake and rather dryer than I expected it to be, and as with some of the other dishes, it was a very mild flavor, with the tomatoes and onions predominating. My wife's cabbage was very good, with the cabbage and carrots plainly sauteed, but still al dente. Which brings us to the beef. The flavor of the beef, with the tomatoes and onions, we very good, but, only about a quarter of the cubes were edible. The amount of gristle on the pieces was unconscionable. I asked our waiter what the cut of meat was, and he said it was skirt steak. When I asked the host, he said it was round. What it chewed like was the gristle side of a strip steak, with perhaps a 1/2 inch of meat. Very unfortunate, because the dish itself, with the smokiness of the meat and the sauce had an excellent flavor. I don't know if it would be wise or a possibility to ask before ordering whether you can get cubes of the beef that don't have gristle on them, but it would certainly be worth the effort to get the dish because of the flavor. Finally, for the food, the mango mousse was delicious. Now for the bill, the bill is presented with the food and beverage cost, the tax, and a 20% tip (on the food and beverage cost) all added together. Then when the receipt from the credit card is presented, it has just the final cost, and a line for gratuity, and a total. If a patron was not in the habit of checking the bill before giving a credit card, he or she might not know that there was already a 20% charge on the total, and could then give an extra gratuity. All in all we enjoyed the meal, and it was good to be able to compare the East with West African approaches to some of the same types of dishes.

This place should be more celebrated. Great African food in a lively setting with fantastic service. The grilled goat is a favorite of mine, but there are so many tasty things on the menu. Also great cocktails.
Be the first to ReplyGreat Kenyan food and hospitality
This is a very popular restaurant and I can see why. I was warmly welcomed with Kenyan hospitality. Both my server and the manager checked on me throughout the meal. My food was delicious and the portions were quite big. I will be back on my next visit to DC. (They are opening a branch in NYC later this year which I will be eager to try.)

Wanted to try something I've never tried before, so I decided upon this restaurant after looking at the reviews. Once I got to the restaurant to pick up my order, I noticed how nice it was inside. The vibe was really chill yet professional. The hostesses were kind and professional as they looked for my meal, but I gave them my real name not the name I use online, so it took a few minutes; though no fault on them at all.
I ordered the Samaki Wa Mchuzi (fried Tilapia) and Bhajia (fried potatoes). It was okay. I didn't know if came with all the tomatoes on top; I dislike tomatoes. But the fish was good. Couldn't tell it was fried because of the sauce on it that made it soft.
I did not eat the plantains because I'm used to salty ones and these were too sweet for me. The collards were okay; again, a different style of cooking them than what I was used to.
Overall, it was okay. It wasn't nasty and it wasn't amazing. I'm glad I tried it though.
Delicious!
We had visited the Maryland location last year and were delighted to find this location by accident while in DC. We love Kenyan food. This location did not disappoint. The food is amazing, but the restaurant was packed with people and loud. (If you are COVID sensitive, this is not for you.) That aside, the food was amazing! Mango Lassi, chicken curry, ugali, collard greens, mango cake...everything was delicious. If you suffer from sticker shock, beware! The great food will cost you a pretty penny. 4 bottles of water cost us $18. A 20% gratuity is automatically calculated and added to the tab. We spent about $260 on a meal for 4 which did not include any alcohol. We considered this a treat and would return. We just wouldn't do this more than once a year....

From start to finish this place gets an A+. I made a reservation through OpenTable at 4:30 p.m. As soon as I walked in and down to the basement I was pleasantly surprised. The place is immaculate with wonderful lighting and decor to match. And they are playing afrobeats while you eat. At least one person at each table was dancing in their seat. I was greeted immediately by several hostesses and managers. The waitress took her time to explain the menu to us as this was our first time at this restaurant. The goat is a popular dish so they ran out and wouldn't have any prepared until dinner. The manager informed us that it would be about a 45-minute wait so we chose to wait since we came so far to try it. It was definitely worth the wait. Two managers came by our table again to make sure everything was to our liking and apologize about the wait. The customer service is like no other. I will definitely be back as well as bringing a couple of friends and family. Please try this place out for an authentic Kenyan East African meal. You won't be disappointed.

Fun, sexy, hip restaurant. They have a nice selection of unique and delicious dishes, that you don't typically see elsewhere. The overall vibe of the restaurant is also very chic and fun.
