Expensive but the art of tempura at its highest level
Wanted to try good tempura & this place delivered. The wallet def took a hit but it's refreshing to see a father & son operation carrying on the traditions. It's RSVP only, no walk ins. This is the equivalence of omakase/kaiseki but for tempura. Only 9 guests per seating for the 2 hr experience. Dinner menu ranged from JP¥20,000 to JP¥26,000. Few things that stood out: otoson & musuko worked in tandem, each item is prepped meticulously, the chef inspected each piece carefully before committing it to the deep, the batter was remixed each round, the temperature of the fryer is carefully controlled instead of left on constantly, everything is served burning hot, you use either salt or house sauce for dipping, 2 servers were very attentive & kept my drinks coming...perhaps too many drinks. Items we had included tiger shrimp (head then body), white fish twice, unago (eel), squid, shitake, chestnut, lotus root, ginkgo, the higher price tier includes uni & abalone. At the end they served miso soup (with clams) along with either tendon or tempura served over rice.

Third visist in 3 years. Quality is consistent as always. Chef was friendly towards tourist and even recommended yakiniku and sushi places he visited

I never saw the logic of paying for deep fried food until I saw how much tempura can really accentuate the freshness of the ingredients.
Have visited four times and it is consistently excellent - lunch is better value and they do not compromise on the quality. The amadai, uni wrapped in shiso and shirako are highlights.
Redefining the word Tempura
We thought we knew Tempura amd Fukamachi proved us wrong.
Sitting at the counter watching the father and son duo preparing the food for you is watching art in the making.
If you think that deep fried food is simple to make and thus supposed to be cheap, an experience here will change it.
Not only the ingredients are really of top quality, the chef make sure the temperature is always right, you don't really hear the sizzling sound as he maintains the oil temperature. He also maintains the balance of the tempura batter. All these attention to details result to an extraordinary tempura meal.
If we have to pick a favourite, the uni tempura is our pick. A generous portion of Hokkaido uni is wrapped in shiso leaf, fried just enough so the tempura batter is crispy and so that it's just hot enough but you can still enjoy it directly, resulting in an umami taste that's out of this world.
The baby squid deserves a mention as well, as it tastes unlike any squid we've ever tasted before.
What a great dining experience and definitely worth it's star!
Real tempura but expensive
Tempura is truly an art form here. The chefs frying the various pieces of vegetables and seafood really are performing works of art. We were seated for a late lunch, no reservations, so we were seated at a table not the bar. A server brought over our pieces after each round was fried to our cute set of small plates and dipping sauces/salt. There was an interesting assortment of Japanese vegetables, while the seafood was so fresh and delicious. The tempura batter is so light and airy, it's just enough without overdoing. You finish with clam miso soup, ice cream, and hojicha. Great experience, though quite pricey, especially for lunch; hence the -1 star. It came out to $85 a person, and we didn't even order drinks.
