Unbelievable Views but mediocre service
Overall, I loved the resort. However, I had really bad service experiences with valet, the pool areas, and was really disappointed in the value of the drinks and food pricing. At a resort like this, I expected fresh fruit juices to be used at some of the higher end restaurant bars but instead we got to see the bartenders pouring juices straight from the Ocean Spray bottles. The pool areas were understandably understaffed given the weather forecast was to be rainy and cloudy but the outcome of the weather turned out to be a beautiful sunny day. However, it would've been nice to see some more management support for the youthful staff that I saw dealing with some difficult situations with dissatisfied guests. As well, it would've been great to offer hotel guests a discounted Spa Pool Day purchase given the other two pools, including the adults only pool, were all closed. Again, understandably so but the make good might be a discounted opportunity for adult only hotel guests looking to get away from the families. Overall, the service was hit or miss throughout the resort. However, some standouts are the bartenders at the catalina Kitchen, I believe Daniel, David and Dustin all were great with suggestions on what to do and where to go. Some things others like to do as well as their own preferences. The internet connection on the wifi throughout the resort and entertainment system in the room were terrible. Thankfully I didn't plan to work from the room and booked a leisure trip as I won't recommend anyone that plans to work from a resort from there. The Entertainment system in the room didn't work all day on Saturday which was disappointing as I wanted to watch the NCAA tournament from the large screen in the room which I ended up connecting my own firestick to the monitor so I could. I utilized the text to valet and it texted me my car would be ready in 5 minutes, so I went down to valet and proceeded to wait another 45 minutes before my car was ready to bring to the front. The unacceptable service is the lack of respect for people's time, the reason a guest utilizes the text to get their car is so they can do other things or be updated about the status of their car being ready at valet. I would've been fine with the experience if the valet SMS text back was "car will be ready in appx 30 minutes". This was a big miss and a large issue for many guests. One highlight has to be the cleanliness of the room and the staff working in housekeeping. My room was always perfect when I got back from going out for the day. Loved the water and turndown service as well. The views on a gorgeous day are unbelievable, it’s almost like you’re in Hawaii or Mexico. The walking trails are really well done and easy for anyone to walk a good 3-5 miles. Being able to hike the walking trails from the beach to the lighthouse. Amazing cliff side views! The spa is something I’d recommend checking out for sure, the best part is the pool access otherwise it’s $60/day for pool only access, so mind as well get a pedicure and enjoy the pool! Services at the pool were great and very attentive. Overall, I would love to give this place another shot! Lots of areas of improvement but the resort is gorgeous
Be the first to ReplyNot the resort it used to be - understaffed, sub-par experience for a premium price
I have frequented this resort for years as we live just 20 minutes away and often come to this resort for "staycations" (even hosted our company's partner retreat there last year and booked 17 rooms). The hotel and service has gone down in quality substantially over the past few years. The trip this past weekend was the breaking point for me. I booked this hotel through FHR Amex - first, the check in line was enormous and they only had 3 people at front desk so we waited over 20 minutes to check in. Then, we headed to the spa for our 90 minute massages (at a cost of nearly $900 for the 2 of us, after tip) and after our massage, the showers hot water was not working and we had to take COLD showers (an an already rainy & cold day). I told the front desk and they advised other guests told the same and they were working on it. But no other accommodations, discounts or anything were offered. At dinner that evening (for my husband's birthday) they were short staffed and my drink (which i ordered the minute i sat down) finally arrived at the END of my meal 40 minutes after being sat. This was after flagging down our waiter multiple times (who was doing his best but overloaded with too many tables). Was still charged for drink. Last, the entire resort's "room charge" system was being upgraded (which they didn't tell us about) so we couldn't charge anything to the room. Normally, this wouldn't be an issue, but since we booked through Amex FHR we get a perk of $100 credit + $60 breakfast credit. We couldn't charge our room so when i asked how they would apply my credit, i was informed I had to pay for everything on my Credit card then call the resort the day after check out to have them reverse the charges and apply a credit. WHAT A HASSLE. Another point to mention is the adult pool is rarely open these days. It was closed the days we were there (Sunday and Monday) and when we asked the resort, they said they were short staffed and didn't have the ability to open the pool. Crazy when you pay for a premium resort of more than $600/nt! A very very sub par experience. Extremely disappointing as we were planning to spend a weekend there this summer with our young kids - rethinking that choice after this last stay.

Our time at Terranea Resort was amazing. We went hiking and the trails were easy to get too with several place for amazing views of the ocean. The food choices onsite were plentiful, we ate at Nelson, Catalina Kitchen, Sea Beans, and The Grill at the Resort Pool. The staff was very helpful and ready to assist.

I've had a love/hate relationship with Terranea. I live locally and have come to expect very poor service when I go. 2 servers at any given place when they really need 4 type of issues. I am staying here now and was looking forward given the hiring of a new manager running the place, who I was told came from Pelican Hills. I'm giving Terranea 2 stars. It probably deserves 1 star but the location is great, and there was improvement in the check-in procedure. Aside from that, it was pretty poor. BASHI said it closes at 9:00 to eat. I got there at 8:40 just to grab a quick bite. "Sorry sir. The kitchen is closed". Well then say you close at 8:30! I called the operator to see what time Mar'Sel closed which was 9:00. That's fine and the operator told me to go to Nelson's saying the kitchen closes at 10:00. So I walked across the campus and got there by 9:10. "Sorry sir. The kitchen is closed." It's has to be some sort of joke. The vehicle valet system made no sense to me either. It's a texting system which can be efficient. But we have two cars for one room. We needed to get both at the same time to get to an appointment. The system would only allow us to request one car at a time which was not helpful when needing to go anywhere on time. Oh, and my daughter slightly cut her foot on some broken glass that was left behind by whomever stayed in the room previously. I really am more irritated with myself hoping that things would be different, but they basically are not. The resort really is a beautiful place and I've been rooting for Terranea to succeed for a long time, but the overall service is just not near what it should be. Was the service a little better than it used to be, probably a little, which is why I am giving two stars as opposed to one, but still, there is a ton of improvement that needs to be done. Go to Pelican Hill or Montage. At least there you get the service that is deserving of the price point.

Came to meet friends who were staying there. The valets were so nice and helped me get to their Casita. Beautiful view, friendly staff and great service. Had dinner at Mar’sel and it could not have been better! Fun night ending in the lounge. Love this place!
Be the first to ReplyIncredible & Inspirational Destination!
Terranea Resort is an incredible property. The resort is a destination that provides renewed inspiration. The sea and setting are so powerful, and it humbly reminds me of this massive world we live in and how grateful we should be for every opportunity to pause and appreciate the beauty for which we are surrounded.
Be the first to ReplyWent in not sure, and absolutely had the most wonderful time
We had concert tickets at Sofi and decided to build our anniversary weekend around and so my husband booked Terranea. I wasn't sure if it was a great idea - I studied the reviews carefully, paying careful attention to the bad ones to see the responses and what to be prepared for. So we came with a little trepidation and had decided to keep our expectations low. And now I am among the majority of people who LOVED Terranea. We had such a wonderful anniversary weekend. The customer service was outstanding. Every staff person who we interacted with fwas friendly. Felix, Horacio, Sarah, Mario, Mota, Angel, all the hostesses.. We tried so hard to remember everyone's name. Our anniversary felt so special. Angel took great care of us at the front desk and made our stay extra special for our anniversary. The restaurant staff at every place made a deal about our anniversary, and were all friendly and helpful and so nice and attentive. We had great views at all our meals (I had booked ahead on open table) . The weather was not great but we were content with a day to do nothing and were able to enjoy the beautiful trails around on the other days. Regarding some of the issues that people faced, we went into knowing to be patient and we were on vacation and felt that way anyway. We had to wait a little at check out, we sometimes waited a little for our car (especially at check out), i left a voicemail once at the resort dining number hoping to change the time on a reservation and no one got back to me - and I say this only to suggest you take care of your reservations ahead of time just in case. We were so happy the whole weekend none of that mattered. They were busy with a wedding and conferences, and that just lended to the festive atmosphere in some areas, and we enjoyed the solitude in others. We plan to come back with our grown kids. Thanks so much to everyone for an amazing weekend. You made it special.

Terranea Resort was so beautiful yesterday! Went to the Lobby Bar for wine and a bite to eat. Ian took great care of us. Rebecca is always so wonderful and provides a great smile and wonderful customer service. Ambience is so good too! Always enjoy our experience there. 5 gold stars to Rebecca and her team. Cheers, Michele B

Our family of 4 celebrated the holiday season at the Terreanea Resort and couldn’t have been more pleased! The room and amenities were amazing, the grounds are stunning and the restaurants on property are delicious. With a plethora of on-site activities there is no reason to leave the property. Highly recommend lunch at Nelson’s and the weekend brunch at Catalina Kitchen (my absolute fav!). Head on over you won’t be disappointed!
Be the first to ReplyNo Longer Among the Elite Southern California Resorts
We stayed the last week of July and were returning guests...unfortunately this will be our last time we stay at this property. Let's start with the Good. The Grounds are and have always been amazing..two thumbs up to the team in charge of Landscaping. It stops there thou with the compliments. We spent $2,500 per night for one of the Casitas. The condition of the room was worn and dirty. The furniture had stains and the patio chairs had multiple missing cushions. The Main Lobby Patio is also in need of a refresh...stains on all the Patio Furniture, Black Soot Stains above the outdoor fireplaces and non working fire pits. We ate at 2 of the 3 restaurants...both which ran out of multiple items on the already reduced offering menu. When questioning multiple staff members about the deteriorating conditions and service of the property, they all responded the same way..they were hurt hard by Covid. This place sadly is no longer among the Elite Southern California Resorts. If youre gonna spend 2K+ a night on a room, do yourself and favor and head further south down to Pelican Hill or The Montage.

This was our first time here. We couldn't believe something like this existed such a short drive from LA. From the views to the pools to the oceanside meals at Nelsons, we felt transported to a far away vacation spot. The highlight was the Ocean Kayaking trip, where we saw dolphins, sea lions and whales. We will definitely be back!
Be the first to ReplyWonderful weekend Getaway at Terranea!
Spent our one year anniversary at the magical Terranea Resort and it did not disappoint!!!! Relaxed by the pool, met some great people, and danced to some great tracks supplied by the pool DJ. Checked into our amazing ocean front room were simply stunned by the incredible views. Dinner at mar'sel was out of this world. The service and the food were off the charts delicious! Just when we thought we couldn't eat any more, the waiter brought out a "Happy Anniversary" dessert on the house. We ended the night watching the moon light up waves. Such a fun experience! Slept great in the huge coma bed and woke up ready for more of those views! Had lunch at Nelson's. The seafood Cobb salad was tremendous! Overall, Terranea Resort is a wonderful place and we will most definitely be visiting again. The personnel are very friendly and helpful, and you simply can't beat the amenities this place has to offer. 10 out of 10!!!!!!!

We live in California and this is one of the best resorts to travel to. We flew in a few of our family members for a few days and had the most amazing time.Three things that really stuck out were the incredible staff, the many food options and the number of activities the resort has to offer. The archery and kids club were two of our favorite.

We were expecting a 5 star hotel. What a shock! It is very overpriced for the quality and service it provides. The food was mediocre and expensive. No one answers the front desk phone. The setting is beautiful but doesn't make up for all the negatives.

I celebrated my last two birthdays at Terranea. Last year I celebrated my milestone bday in the 3 bedroom villa and this yr I stayed in a one-bedroom suite. The villa is a little dated, but nice and spacious, w/ 3.5 bathrooms, attached parking garage , private hot tub, washer/dryer, full kitchen, fire place, lots of seating areas inside & outside. This year my experience didn't start off that great. I showed up a little before check-in started, but I had to wait over an hour to check-in. The suite was a little dated. The view of the pool at night and the ocean was incredible. The one-bedroom suite, has a separate living room area w/ a pull-out sofa, balconies, and 1.5 bathrooms. On my first night there, we went to Nelsons. The food was just okay. I was more impressed by the sunset ocean view. My last morning there was very memorable. I went for a nice long morning walk and was mesmerized by 3 dolphins. Before I checked out, I went to the gym. It was modern with an ocean view. Both of the times I stayed here, I had a really good time. I feel like I paid more for the view and experiences then the rooms. The room can use some updating. I'm disappointed at my check-in experience, considering I was there for my birthday and all the time I had to wait to check-in. Most hotels will give you at least something small for your birthday or the long wait to check-in. As much as the rooms cost, I should feel more welcomed and valued when checking in.

Spent July 4th at this property and had a wonderful stay. We were traveling with family and so we ended up reserving a 2 bedroom Casita. There was some mishap with the check in but the staff went out of their way to make things right. Overall, the resort was super crowded but the staff was extremely friendly and went out of their way to make our stay comfortable and fun. The staff at the ocean activity center was great and we really enjoyed our private Kayak tour. The pools do get filled up really quickly and so finding any chairs was a challenge but I think that was mostly because it was a long weekend. Also, the restaurants can provide more vegetarian options but overall, being in LA, we went out a few times for dinner and so did not have too many issues.
Be the first to ReplyBad service and disappointing amenities
1 out of 5 Sink in bathroom was clogged. We called and service person came during dinner time and left his tool but it was not repaired. We called again the Morning after and no one came when we were having breakfast. We had to call a third time and it was done. It is very disgusting to have clogged sink when you have to wash your hand and brush your teeth at night. We just came back from the pool however our Room service did not come and it’s already 6h00PM and we have to take our showers to get ready for dinner but we don’t have clean towels!!!! Beds were not done. This is not acceptable for a high end hotel as advertised. This hotel is at best a 3 star hotel and it’s almost a scam compared to many hotels that we have been too in Europe and Canada and USA. Overpriced for quality and service. The view is great but that’s it. If you want to pay for that view then book this hotel , if you want luxury then go somewhere else.

This used to be my favorite hotel! It was gone way downhill since the pandemic. Nobody picks up the front desk phone. If you need anything, you need to walk down to the desk yourself. I spent 20+ minutes on hold waiting to talk to someone on several occasions, nobody ever answered. One morning, I called room service to order breakfast. And nobody answered. 45 minutes on hold, still no answer. I was there for a conference and had a day full of meetings. Room service breakfast was my only chance to eat all day. I finally called the operator and she patched me through. I told them they must have an issue with their phones because I hadn’t been able to get through. They told me they’d just been busy. So…I guess if they’re busy, the guests just go hungry? It’s a shame. I’ve stayed at this hotel at least 5 times in the last 10 years and used to rank it amongst the best hotels in the country. Now it is way under-staffed. Hopefully they can staff up again and get back to being great because it is a beautiful property.

They seemed to have over booked for the weekend, the check in line was very crowded. We booked 2 rooms for parent’s stay. Both rooms were not ready until 5 pm, way passed check in time. Golf was good. Service at the pool was good too.
