🤢 2/5 - Disappointing. OK food, sub-par service.

I love Thai food. We eat it all the time in Rockville and Wheaton. It's our go-to choice when travelling because it is consistently good. So imagine my disappointment to rate Thai X-ing a 2 overall. I really wanted it to be a 5.
Ate here on a Sunday evening with spouse and daughter who lives in Shaw. This restaurant has been written up positively many times, and is in daughter's neighborhood, so I've been wanting to eat here for over a year. We learned that Sunday evening was a vegetarian evening, and we are non-meat eaters, so this sounded perfect.
We entered, saw the sign saying to come upstairs. Thankfully none of us is elderly or disabled, so no problem, heaven help those who are.
No host to greet, we happened to catch the eye of one of the servers carrying food. She looked around, spotted a table, and directed us to go there, and she continued on with her tasks, quite informal.
We received water immediately, then sat for 10 minutes or so, no action. No menu. No asking if we wanted anything to drink. I flagged down a server, who asked us if we wanted to see a drink menu. We said yes, and a food menu too. She explained that Sunday evening is a fixed price vegetarian menu, ok this is good for us we thought. No sign showing that, no word from anyone as we were seated, it was just expected that if you come on a Sunday night, you know this. She brought a drink menu, I ordered a beer from a selection of two excellent local breweries and one international. Others ordered Thai iced tea.
The food arrived, starting with a spicy soup. My wife can't eat spicy food, it makes her choke. It was spicy, with some taste, and had some vegetables in it including kaffir leaves (inedible) and what seemed to be lemongrass (inedible), so I had to pick out the inedible elements and stack them on my plate.
Then other dishes came. A vinegary noodle dish that was too spicy for spouse. Fresh vegetable rolls in a delicious peanut sauce. Another vinegary noodle dish that was too spicy for spouse. A mushroom dish that was ok. A tofu dish in a curry sauce which was ok. A squash dish in a curry sauce (apparently this dish was rated by the Washington Post among 60 must-have dishes) which was ok.
Again, we are non-meat eaters, and Thai is among our favorite cuisines. This dining experience should have been a slam-dunk.
As a sign of how much we enjoyed the food, there was a lot of food left on the serving plates uneaten. In other words, nobody was going back for more. And amazingly, none of the servers or the host asked us if we enjoyed our meal!
We had enough, had been there awhile, didn't particularly enjoy the food, service was slow and not particularly charming. We felt full, yet unsatisfied. We were ready to go home. I informed a server that we were ready for our check and, if it comes as part of the meal, dessert. Then suddenly another dish appears: pad see euw. We have had pad see euw at many restaurants, and it's our daughter's go-to dish. It was ok. Spouse and daughter had a couple of bites and said enough. They said it was too sweet, I just thought it was pedestrian.
Dessert was sticky rice with mango, which the others loved. This dish they finished, I had none.
Bill came. $113 for 3 x $30 fixed price vegetarian meals, and $23 for the drinks and tax. I was shocked. I hadn't known the fixed price was $30. And we came away with not a single dish that we raved over, and experienced impersonal slow service with servers who didn't seem to know English.
Ratings: food 2, atmosphere 3, service 2, value 1, for an overall score of 2. Given the outstanding Thai restaurants in the area, I will not be returning here anytime soon.
