Not family friendly, one waiter bad attitude.
Sadly will not be returning despite food being good. Attitude of one waiter to my daughter in law and young baby. Made us all feel very uncomfortable and spoilt our meal. We were being more than considerate by taking baby outside when she was a little unsettled . He was really unfriendly giving us dirty looks and rolling his eyes! Spoilt the entire lunch. Wont be back
Be the first to ReplyWe would definitely visit this pub again. Great food and service
We needed a dog friendly pub for a family birthday meeting. The staff were very welcoming and brought the dog a bowl of water on arrival. The food selection was diverse from venison to cheese soufflé without having an overload of choice. We opted for a sharing steak pie made with a suet crust which was delicious as were the veg accompaniments. There were plenty of unusual desert choices and a cheese board option. The drinks/ wine selection covered all needs. The rosé we chose was light and fresh. All in all a lovely meal.
Be the first to ReplyPlace looks like a little hole in the wall but food and service was just flat out excellent.
Excellent food and service that I would put up there with all the best restaurants we have even been to. Went for Sunday lunch. Staff was extremely attentive and fast. Place looks like a little hole in the wall and was a bit loud almost like an American diner but the staff and food makes you forget that quickly.

We arrived 5 minutes early to be led to the bar as our table wasn’t available yet. Fair enough but we were unable to get served at the bar so stood awkwardly for 15 minutes. My gut was telling me to leave but my partner insisted we stayed. We started with some bread which was fine, but it was £4 for some bread and butter. We sampled the house wine which was pretty terrible so we settled on the slightly more expensive Italian wine, we were warned it was slightly sparkling so not for everyone, but I love sparkling red so I was very excited. The wine (£35 a bottle) tasted like scrumpy cider, my partner deemed it undrinkable and ordered a carafe but I carried on. This wine became a light relief from the food we were served. We shared the soufflé, which was fine, but was served a top some sort of painfully garlicky courgette soup. We then shared the beef and the pheasant, the beef was a bowl of slop, fat and aggressive spice. On several occasions I found myself chewing a star anise and even had a whole vanilla pod in the bowl. The pheasant was about 75% salt. It was wrapped in some sort of awful gristle, served alongside some heavily mayo covered celeriac, this, whilst disgusting, did at least offer some respite from the salt. The bill came to £150 for two of us, which in this economy, I wish we’d spend on powering our own oven.

Haven’t been for years but even better than I remembered it…even more inventive food…terrine that was flavourful and moist, not in any way dry. Pork dish full of flavour. Delightful dessert. Great wine. Great value. Fun atmosphere. Nice servers (ok forgot things once or twice but didn’t really detract). Not many better places to go in London.
Be the first to ReplyFood hygiene issues
We visited for their Sunday lunch menu. It’s hard to imagine how you can get food hygiene wrong with a roast meal but the Anchor and Hope managed it. Two of our party of four went home with acute diarrhoea. I emailed them to give them the opportunity to acknowledge or respond but no reply. A double fail.
Be the first to ReplyGastropub for an occasion…
The 6 of us had dinner at The Anchor & Hope near Waterloo station. I was impressed by the decor, layout and customer service. We had two orders of the lamb neck for 2, a beef shank and an octopus. For desserts we had a couple of chocolate mousse’, a couple of plum & almond tarts and a lemon pot w/ shortbread. All the dishes were pretty good, modern British gastropub fare. The octopus is not grilled but in a stew/soup bowl which wasn’t what I’d preferred. The lamb neck was clearly the must order item. The desserts were pretty cool too. I think it came up to about £50/head. We ordered a few beers and a bottle of wine too.
Be the first to ReplyFabulous staff and excellent food
This is the first time I've been to the Anchor and Hope since COVID. I am so glad to say that it is just as marvellous as ever. The staff are unfailingly cheerful and attentive. The Bartender is great. João makes one of the best martinis in London. The food is excellent. The menu changes almost daily. We had a watermelon salad with feta and olives that was scrumptious along with a duck confit that compared favourably to what we eat in Paris. The confit was served with gem lettuce, figs, hazelnuts, and a creme fraiche dressing. It was typical of the chef's inventive cuisine, Many thanks to Gambi, Craig, João, and the whole team for a wonderful evening. If you are going to the Old Vic, this is the place for a pre-theatre meal.
Be the first to ReplyOnce a year business lunch
It's been since 2019 because of COVID, but I always come here on the 1st Saturday in September connected to a business trip. I always look forward to it; restaurant is usually pretty quiet, but I get my carafe of wine and a fish dish. I just LOVE this place. Reminds me of the best of British cooking that I've seen on TV (American from Atlanta who adores FINE pub food). Had the Dover sole--YUMMY!
Be the first to ReplyMean lack of customer care
The food was good and the service pleasant but the lunch was soured by one incident. The restaurant tried to charge us to replace clotted cream with ice cream . The kitchen staff then hid behind the waiter and refused to meet us to explain. I am not sure what the price difference is between the two toppings - I suspect a few pence, if that. I cannot understand why the restaurant chose to make this an issue. Silly and wrong headed cheese-paring is disastrous
Be the first to ReplyGreat daily refreshed menu
Great food, with a daily changing menu. We shared some peppers and bread to start before wild turbot. We had a table at 530 to give us time to make a theatre show at 730 just along the way at the Old Vic. Great food. Lovely service. Some tables outside where we had a drink before our meal.
Be the first to ReplyGreat food, somewhat spoilt by plonk
Food was excellent, served by knowledgeable and engaged waiter. However the wine was terrible. The bottle we drank afterwards was poor quality rather than corked - just cheap plonk at 55 quid a bottle. I researched after and wonder if they are being fobbed off with fake wine, the reviews dont match the contents.
Be the first to ReplyGreat choice.
My son and I opted for a lunch here after doing some research. The slow roast lamb neck was our meal of choice and it was an excellent one. A very good experience and one I would have no hesitation trying again.
Be the first to ReplyLovely food, shame about the rude barman
Our first visit to the Anchor and Hope. Delicious food and wine and really friendly waiting staff. I would have given 5 stars but for the fact that one of the bar staff was really patronising and off hand. I ordered a glass of Prosecco which was flat. I took it to the bar and the barman tried to say that the reason was because Prosecco did not have as many bubbles as Cava! I explained that I drank Prosecco a lot and it was definitely flat. In fact a lady sitting at the bar also commented there were no bubbles in the glass. He clearly didn’t like the fact that I disagreed with him. He insisted I went back to my table and he would bring a fresh glass over. When he did, I was talking to my friend and facing away. I just heard the glass being abruptly put on the table and marched off without a word. It was clear to us all that he was very cross! I have no idea why he took it so personally and it was SO unprofessional. Sadly his behaviour marred what was otherwise a lovely meal.

Siblings with spouses travelled from Canada to surprise our sister who we hadn’t seen since pandemic Staff was excellent in accommodating and helping us arrange the surprise to take place AT the restaurant during a busy dinner service On top of that all the food was fantastic, the service was great, all making it an evening to remember
Be the first to ReplyFantastic meal!
I used to dine int his restaurant many many years ago. Last night did not disappoint and we enjoyed our delicious meal. We sat outside and used the available heater as it started to cool down. Staff we attentive and helped us with our choices. Looking forward to our return visit.

My favourite pub, even if it's more of a restaurant than a pub. Always great, really good ingredients, nice wines. Love it.
Be the first to ReplyExceptional
My wife and I booked for supper pre-theatre last Friday. Excellent food, and really exceptional service. Perfect combination.
When service is that good one realises why it's so important and makes such a difference.
Fantastic, hearty food with excellent service in a super convenient location for Waterloo
10-Feb-22 Anchor & Hope, The Cut, near Southwark / Waterloo East.
I'd been here years ago for a drink and had been advised by my friend at the time that the food was fantastic. Finally returned for a Thursday evening dinner with a different friend, as it's a very convenient location for trains from Waterloo / Waterloo East.
What used to be a pub with dining at the back (if my memory serves me correctly) is now a restaurant only, and is clearly thriving as such as it was packed when we arrived (6:15pm) and we were reminded that they needed the table back by 8:15pm.
I can now quite see why it's so popular! Staff are lovely: super friendly, well informed, and very helpful.
My taramasalata starter was excellent and an enormous amount. My beef stew main with parmesan polenta was also fantastic, with deep, rich flavours that very much suited the chilly time of year. A yummy creme caramel completed the meal.
Wines are available as small glass, 375 carafe or bottle. I really like the carafe serving as it's ideal when you don't want the same wine as your dining partner. Staff were helpful with wine selection too.
I will definitely return very soon.
The best eatery in London. Bar none.
Been here many times. The quality remains the same. Just incredible.
Potato gratin dauphinois and beef rump the best I’ve ever had.
Cannot recommend highly enough
One of our favourite places
We have been eating at the Anchor & Hope for several years now. Not often, as we were not in London often. It was always good with friendly & informative service, always delicious food, well sourced & simply cooked produce, which spoke for itself on the plate. We hadn't been there these last 18 months but had a terrific early evening meal there, pre a Southbank concert. Duck hearts on toast. Always good but very tender & delicious tonight. Cauliflower (steamed?) in a slight creamt anchovy dressing with slivers of sauteed almonds & a chickpea pancake with char-grilled? raddichio, spinach, blistered tomatoes & delicious goat's curd & a dressing of olive oil, capers etc. One of the best meals we have had in London these last few months, post lockdown, along with the Barbary, Barrafina & Brawn.
Be the first to ReplyLovely pre theatre dinner and drink!
A great bar and restaurant - we had lovely service and comforting food on a cold night. We enjoyed sharing some peppers to start, a carafe of wine and then the special beef of the day.
A great pre theatre spot and they asked if we were seeing the production at the Young Vic and prioritised service accordingly.
Delicious homemade wholesome food
Great atmosphere. Not a fine dining experience, but rustic clean, good service and amazing food.
My husband and I had the beef pie with suet pastry. It was tender, tasty, and big portion.
Disappointing and over-priced
We'd heard good things about this pub but for a central London venue the menu seemed woefully old-fashioned. As a vegetarian, there were no main courses from which I could choose so I settled for two very ordinary starter salads - a beetroot salad and a pear salad with limp, tired leaves. The only protein I spotted was half an egg! My companions had slow cooked lamb that was poorly presented. The staff were disorganised and seemed constantly distracted. I felt better after I got home and had some protein... but as we spent £40 a head it was not exactly value for money.
Be the first to Replysuch and great and welcoming place
We had a few drinks with my wife and my mum. The staff were so welcoming. Its wierd that the cut is still so quiet. We had a nice relaxed drinks and everything was amazing.
