We still cannot explain the accolades The Clove Club receives, at least based on the experience we had. Celebrating my wife's birthday we went with great expectations based on the Michelin star and the reviews but were ultimately, sadly disappointed. The place is odd, cute and quite charming walking in. We were led to our table which is a large room with an open kitchen that is perfect to watch the action as the chef's prepare the food. There was, however, a horrible stench from something that was being prepared and it took about ten minutes to either dissipate or for us to get used to. It certainly didn't do anything to set the mood. The waitress asked if we had any food allergies or aversions, which we'd already gone over in the reservation process, but better safe than sorry, right? We both mentioned that we did not like or want olives in/on our dishes if that could be avoided. (Don't hate us, we just are not olive fans!) No worries, she told us. She the offered us cocktails and made a few suggestions and we settled on a rum drink that sounded interesting. When they arrived, they were garnished with olives. Seriously. We mentioned it and that it was awfully odd to have olives in a rum drink, to which she replied they were JUST a garnish. I chocked mine down and my wife could not. Waitress did replace it but how to you mess that up when we told her in the same conversation that we did not like olives!?Dinner started and many dishes were interesting to beautifully prepared, but many were just pedestrian and boring. Not a single dish was memorable and the most infuriating part was the food runner that dropped our plates did not have a command of English and was impossible to understand. We had to rely on the food runners at tables near us to describe dishes to those diners in order to fully understand and appreciate what we were eating. My real issue with that is the feeling that we didn't get anywhere near the same experience that others got, but we got to pay the same prices. The next issue was the wine selection and service. We opted to purchase a bottle and then a couple of glasses instead of the pairing offered. The sommelier and his staff were attentive with the bottle and knowledgeable about the nice wine list. However, we were miffed by the super light pour on the glasses that we ordered. I guess it's how they pour in England, but watching the tables that opted for the tasting, it was obviously a bad decision to order by the glass as the pours were generous for the pairing. So, Pro Tip: Opt for the pairing or bottles rather than by the glass as it's not worth it. We did complain about it and the manager was awfully nice about it. I just wish it hadn't come to that. The final blow was the birthday acknowledgement. Or, should I say, the lack of one. They completely forgot until after the bill came. It wasn't a big deal, and we wouldn't have even noticed except two others had birthdays near us and we did see how and when in their meals they were "celebrated." It was just tacky and would have been better at that point to just pretend they didn't remember at all.
