Sunday lunch
I have always loved this pub , but this Sunday the service in the restaurant was absolutely terrible, four times while eating our roast we had to go and find the waitress to get drinks , horseradish etc ,. She was the most miserable person I had seen for a long , sadly I will not be going back.

Had a lovely meal here - great food and and even better atmosphere. Young helpful and freindly staff. Dogs were made a fuss of and it was a very jolly experience (even if the turnoff from the main road is a little hairy!). Will definitely be going back.

Nice atmosphere, beautiful building and very tasty food. HOWEVER unless you have unlimited funds, do ask for food price list beforehand. We were very unpleasantly surprised with the bill. We asked for a vegan menu, and they couldn't provide one as there wasn't one available - however they informed us they could have prepared a vegan mushroom risotto. We decided to order one and a side of chips as we weren't overly hungry. Food arrived and indeed the risotto was lovely. Chips were average skinny fries. When it was time to pay we were shocked to discover that one portion of risotto came to £21.95 !!! We live in London and we're used to food being pricey, but not THIS dear. A side bowl of fires came to £5.50 - I believe these were just regular frozen fries, nothing homemade. It's hard to say we enjoyed our visit as by the time we left we felt as if we'd just been robbed in broad daylight.

The old part of the pub is wonderfully characterful. The menu has limited vegetarian and vegan options. My roasted pineapple desert whilst tasty was rather a small portion, looked unappetising and was drowned in sauce.

Wow what a gorgeous pub .. and a delicious roast beef. What a way to spend a Saturday afternoon with friends .. even returning home with a doggy bag for tomorrow .. sadly our Yorkshire puddings will be Aunt Bessie’s. Recommended by our daughter - what a find. The views .. the gardens .. so many outside seating areas .. even the covered outside eating area looks pretty and tempting. Well done Duke of Cumberland - it was a pleasure to spend our afternoon with you .. and share our unused vegetables with another table .. sorry we weren’t prepared to share our lush beef 😉.

From the first second of speaking with Ali to organise a group booking for 12 right to the moment of departure we couldnt have been treated in a more professional manner. Thank you so much for a fantastic, highly memorable luncheon. Chef prepared exceptional culinary delight's, both a true delight to the eye and stunning on the palate. We were served by highly attentive staff who showed kindness and care. Thank you Ali for making the day so special for everyone. Simon Goodman deserves every accolade that he has received. Well done.

Lovely staff but this pub is wildly overpriced for the quality of food it offers. A £21 vegetarian tagine was stingy in quantity and pretty tasteless. I was offered more when I sent it back. My friend had ham, egg and chips for the same crazy price. I’ve just looked at the menu i they have on their website and it’s very misleading, showing much more choice and for cheaper prices than the actual menu. The following day I went to The Pig in Arundle and was surprised to find first class food for the same price. This is the 2nd time I’ve felt over charged at the pub.

We had been told about this pub and it was described as amazing ! On a rare Sunday off we booked up and visited, beautiful pub in amazing grounds with fantastic views , but sadly the food did not live anywhere near it ! We had pre ordered the roast and yes very novel to be brought to your table to carve ! BUT it came in stages , the meat and gravy, slowly followed by potatoes and then cauliflower cheese and then veg and about 10 minutes later Yorkshire puddings !! We were a party of 6 and with the slowness of bringing everything out all meals were warm not hot and the chicken yea was amazing, the pork and beef were lack lustre , veg was mainly stalks and no flavour, gravy, some flavour but so watery ! Potatoes ok and yorkshires burnt !!! Very under seasoned all of it, not flavour added to anything to lift the components and make them flavoursome , we were given the starter menu and nothing appealed and a very safe slection for a high price , desserts again were over priced and uninspiring, had coffee again cold , sugar on saucer no spoon and we did ask for one for it never to come ! Overall very disappointed , over priced and should up their game to keep a reputation !! Staff were ok, some friendly and helpful and others not so and unwelcoming , I do not usually write reviews but sadly for the money of which I don’t mind paying if superb it was underwhelming and expensive and sadly just not great !!!
Be the first to ReplyGastro Pub it is not
Having been disappointed with some of the food on our last visit (some time ago) we thought we would have another try, as the pub and grounds are quite stunning (and well maintained) I understand the chef/proprietor has won various awards (they are framed and on the wall) but the menu plays it very safe and is really pub food. No beef, pork or lamb on the menu, and no fish of the day. That being said my ham eggs and chips were really good (ham was excellent) but my wife had a rather dull Cajun chicken with salad. We arrived at 12.00 and were first to be seated in the restaurant area but our meals still took 45 mins to arrive (must have caught the kitchen by surprise?)
Be the first to ReplyA HIDDEN TREASURE
The Duke of Cumberland near Midhurst really is a hidden treasure, with stunning views across the valley looking towards Blackdown, My daughter had booked the restaurant for a Sunday lunch and asked for a Rib of Beef for three of us. We were very well received and although many were sitting at tables outside enjoying their Sunday Lunch, We sat in their restaurant and it wasn’t long before the magnificent platter arrived with a Rib of Beef, Roast Potatoes and Yorkshire puddings. Then additional dishes of Cauliflower Cheese with Leeks as well as generous portion of Brocolli and Carrots plus a very large jug of superb gravy. My son in law carved the meat and we enjoyed a generous portion of beautifully cooked beef ( nice & pink). We all chose various desserts and I had the best Crème Brûlée ever. The service was efficient and so friendly and although I did not pay, I know it was great value with great food and great service . As we left the waitress put the beef we couldn’t manage into two containers, that I enjoyed the next day. less

Amazing pub set in remote location with the most amazing gardens. The selection of beers, wine, gin, rum etc was outstanding. The food was delicious and service first class, definitely one if not the best pub I have ever visited . Highly recommended 5*

Another fab lunch at The Duke of Cumberland. We were able to take our puppy and sit out on the terrace overlooking the countryside. Staff were friendly, food excellent, a good time was had by all.
Be the first to ReplyA gastronmic experience
I would find it difficult to fault this restaurant. It is a bit off the beaten track, just South of the Devil's Punch Bowl; but, having been Gastropub of the Year, among other honours, it has been well and truly discovered. The pub dates from 1525, but its character and ambience, and the stunning views over woodland, and the exceedingly-pleasant and helpful staff combined to create a simply exquisite , busy but unhurried atmosphere. My friend is pescatarian, and I went along with that. We started with a dozen oysters and a glass of champagne, before I moved on to Moules Marinière, following with Kedgeree, which I know is usually served as a breakfast dish, but it was beautifully spiced with lovely haddock and fluffy rice, and was just right for the day. By the time we got to dessert (our booking was for 2:15pm) we were able to move out to a table on the balcony, where we were able to offer a direct but unobtrusive Santé to proprietor and Head Chef Simon Goodman, and his Brigade Make no mistake - we will be back!
Be the first to ReplyLovely pub, however..
This is truly unique pub. Fantastic location with lovely views of the surrounding countryside. A great food and drink selection served by friendly hospitable staff. A lovely pint (or 3) of Harveys ale is particularly worth a mention. However, my otherwise splendid visit was slightly ruined by the presence of several incidents of dog excrement that were present within the splendid garden. Which I would expect most people would find unacceptable.I am led to believe that this was not an isolated incident of this sort. I certainly intend to visit again and I would hope that this problem can be rectified.

The owner is an accomplished chef. Food, ambience and particularly service were excellent. The waitresses were charming, discreetly efficient, and informative, and really welcoming. From the amuse-bouches to the starters, then leading to a superb pea, mint and crayfish risotto, the food was to die for. Well done, chef!!
Be the first to ReplyFab food. Great staff. We will be back soon 😉
The marquee was so pretty and perfect for the unreliable English weather. The food was great, the staff were attentive. We were looked after by Maria, Maddie and Anna.
Be the first to ReplyAmazing Beer Garden
Purposefully stopped off here on the way to Goodwood after reading favourable reviews online. Tricky place to find, but what a beautiful pub with stunning views from the beer garden. We visited on a lovely sunny lunchtime so the beer garden was perfect. Score reduced to 4/5 as the blonde haired lady who served us at the bar treated us like an inconvenience - didn’t say hello, didn’t smile. In fact she didn’t utter a word apart from saying how much the drinks were. We had planned to eat lunch here but moved on as we didn’t feel particularly welcome.
Be the first to ReplyDuke of Cumberland Pub ... Not as expected. !!
The Duke of Cumberland has a good reputation BUT our experience was not great. Lets start with the good points .... The food and the setting were good. The service was very poor .... We waited thirty minutes before being acknowledged having already retrieved our own drinks from the bar. This continued throughout the night whilst other staff were far from busy. The main selections on the menu were all £20+ with no other option ... which is ok for those that have more money than sense but in my opinion not the best way to attract a wider consumer base (maybe the intention!). What improved our night was the fact that a nice family sitting near us provided home made Norweigan birthday cake (The Worlds Best). Most certainly an unexpected plus on what was an average experience at most. There are many pubs in the area which are certainly better value for money .. but if money is not an issue ... Knock yourself out 😉
Be the first to ReplyWhat a find!
What a superb find! We were travelling to Wiltshire and wanted to stop for a pub lunch - we couldn't have chosen a better location. The pub is idyllic - quintessentially English - as is the little village it's set in. We had a late lunch booking and a couple of the dishes were sold out, but, thankfully for us, we wouldn't have chosen them anyway. What we did have was absolutely delicious - good quality ingredients, cooked extremely well and presented beautifully. The staff were courteous and friendly. We sat in the garden room and the view was stunning. All in all a great start to our weekend away.
Be the first to ReplyVery Disappointed
I phoned the pub about a month ago asking if we booked an evening meal would them, would it be ok if we parked our small camper van in their cork and stay the night , this was agreed by the member of staff and a table was booked for 7pm . We arrived at around 4pm and parked discreetly in the corner of the cork (Which i will say wasn't the best position for a camper being on such a hill) . I went in and confirmed the table booking and where we had parked. I was then told that we shouldn't of been given permission to stay over night. I asked the bar man if he could confirm weather it was ok before we started drinking and relaxing. After an hour of waiting, he said he was waiting from a text message from the owner. We felt very disappointed at the way we had been treated , the staff didn't seem bothered. I went in a couple of times to the bar but still no answer from the owner. I kind local farmer had offered us a spot in his field if they said no. Very kind of him. So after about an hour and half we decided to leave and called the next pub where we were going to stay the following day and asked if it would be ok if we stayed an extra night and ofcourse book a table. Not a problem he said. Then we received a voice message at 8.17pm from The Duke of cucumberland asking if we were coming for our resivation at 7pm. ! Not once did they apologise for letting us down and I felt that the staff were very unhelpful . It was a shame we where really looking forward to spending the evening there and sampling the delicious food . I'm sorry for leaving before cancling our resivation but it goes both ways.

Absolutely wonderful!! We could not fault our lunch. The setting is amazing , I haven’t been there for years. Beautiful old building in an idyllic setting . Loads of outside seating to enjoy the views.
We ate in the restaurant which is light a spacious. The bar looked cosy.
The menu, for me, it was difficult to choose, so many delicious meals.
After much deliberation…
I have the mac and cheese bits followed by the pork belly, which I loved.
The squid had some nice twists.
The ham egg and chips looked fantastic.
Staff great.
Best pub grub we have had in ages .
Superb Sunday lunch quintessential English pub
Should have been 4 of us today but 2 had Covid so we enjoyed a beef roast for 4 just the 2 of us. Never mind we got the big doggy bag to take home. We took our puppy and sat in the marquis with heaters. Very nice well spaced tables and effective heaters. Superb roast delivered on time with all the trimmings. The best roast potatoes I’ve had in years!!! Just the perfect country pub with stunning views and lovely friendly helpful staff. Yes it is expensive but wow is it worth it. Highly recommended.

Great service, very good Sunday lunch
Great service and another memorable and generous Sunday lunch. Thanks.
Beef served very rare (as described) veg and accompaniments were great. Seasonal pud a
must even though I was hard to make room!
Would have liked to have left a tip, no cash and apparently not possible with Apple Pay.
Will be back 😜
The most tasteful pub in England.
I cannot conceive of a more appealing aspect, setting, ambiance, menu, wine-list, proprietorship or patronage than that of the Duke of Cumberland.
Under the stewardship of Award Winning Chef, Simon Goodman, the pub perfectly marries fine dining sensibility with true character and genuine charm. It’s regulars are among the finest of any drinking establishment on the planet and over multiple meals I have never failed to be astonished at the level of food and service.
Emphatically this is the finest pub in England and therefore the world.
