The Matheson Healdsburg Reviews from The Last Year
My second time having Mothers Day dinner at Matheson in
My second time having Mothers Day dinner at Matheson in Healdsburg dinner was a six course exquisite meal each dish was served to perfection each dish was an experience of a life time for example the soup first taste I began to wonder how they got this perfect taste ,how did they make this soup each spoon full woke up your pallet too delicious it's hard to find the right words to describe it, scallops melt in your mouth with flavor, wague beef, dessert will always be a memorable experience and a great Mothers Day celebration at Matheson Restaurant .our server was a delightful girl with a beautiful smile also knowledgeable to answers our questions. Thank you to all the staff at Math
Food was okay.
We celebrated at friends birthday and the server didn't offer desert just gave us the bill. After an evening of drinks and fun, it didn't register until after we already paid. Food was good. Nothing to write home about however.

Food amazing Service OUT OF THIS WORLD the restaurant is gorgeous! If you want a fine dining experience The Matheson is the place. And the roof top restaurant I hear is great too. Their wine sommelier is very knowledgeable and made our dining experience even better. Treat yourself you won't be disappointed.

I'm giving it 4 stars because out of the 3 plates we ordered one was not as good. The service was excellent, since the minute we showed up without a reservation they were able to accommodate us and the attention we received from Zaide, our waitress, was superb. In regards our plates, we enjoyed the pork chop and the steelhead and would not recommend the sardine. For dessert I had the affogato with Baileys ice cream, which I highly recommend if you need a pick me up at the end of the day, because it comes with an espresso shot. This is our second time at the restaurant and will definitely come back to try more of their plates and to enjoy the cool ambiance of the rooftop and wine selection.
We went for happy hour at the bar downstairs.
The wine was (unfortunately) rather disappointing (may be just the happy hour selection)...but the pizza was another story and saved the day! On the happy hour menu only is an amazing cheese pizza (we don't eat meat), but the other vegetarian option was insanely amazing! Broccolini, soft Italian cheese and lemon zest, to simplify the description. I've never actually said "wow" or "wtf" as a reaction to something being so incredibly good before. Well done and PLEASE NEVER stop making it!
Great Happy Hour! Excellent cocktails! Great service! Loved
Great Happy Hour! Excellent cocktails! Great service! Loved the vibe! We didn't even know this place was here. Definitely coming back'
We arrived a couple of minutes before our reservation but
We arrived a couple of minutes before our reservation but we were seated immediately. Water was poured and we received menus and a tablet. The tablet had hundreds of bottles of wine, wine by the glass, an extensive spirits list and specialty cocktails. They also have quite a few zero proof cocktails. We ordered a bottle of Rafanelli Zin. I was shocked at the price, it was way lower than I expected it to be. We started with bread and butter and the kaluga caviar. The bread had great texture. The caviar was served with toast triangles, crème fresh, and an onion cream. The caviar was rich and buttery. The 2 appetizers were enough for the four of us. Next we split the mushroom risotto and a salmon roulette. The mushroom risotto was creamy but not watery. The flavor was great. The salmon dish reminded us of lox on a bagel. It was super rich but the potato latkes helped and the bit of greens on the side was a nice reset. The entrees my dad had the salmon with lobster. He was happy with his choice, I had the mariscos, it was a head on prawn, with sole, on top of bell peppers and onions with a few clams all this came with a wonderful broth. Every single item was cooked perfectly. The sole was perfect, the shrimp head was crunchy and the peppers still had some texture. We finished with an apple for dessert and another dish unfortunately I forgot the name of it. The apple was a cross between a slice of apple pie and strudel. Both were good. It was a great meal and service was exceptional.
We absolutely love the Matheson.
our extended family of six went to their happy hour on both Friday and Saturday. they really do have an epic happy hour and it's got to be the best happy hour in Healdsuburb! McKenzie, who works as a hostess, is just phenomenal. She's smart she's super nice and she really made sure we got our reservations. thanks so much McKenzie. We love the wine wall" where you can sample and try a lot of different wines using a magnetic card of some kind. That was super fun and the wine was 30% off for happy hour which was even better. Dinner was pretty good as well and the SOM was fantastic. We particularly liked the excellent risotto and the seafood they served. we can't wait to get back to the Matheson next time we are in Healdsburg
Such a fun place to go for drinks or to try their amazing
Such a fun place to go for drinks or to try their amazing wine tasting pavilion or dine upstairs and enjoy the views of Healdsburg
Excellent.
We went during restaurant week and had the $55 fixed menu. Great value. Started with a very tasty carbonara, followed by a wonderful pork chop and then desert. My wife had s'mores and I had a panecota - all very nice. The staff were great. John the Som was very helpful and we enjoyed our evening at The Matheson.
Amazing happy hour.
Really great food and strong drinks. We came in a Thursday and were so impressed with the beef tartar and the monster burger
This may have taken over as the best happy hour in
This may have taken over as the best happy hour in Healdsburg. $8 insanely good cocktails including my favorites negroni, manhattan, and red wine. 30% off the wine wall gas juice. The Wagyu burger is omg. All the food is great really. If you work there and are reading these please add a couple vegetarian options like the hummus plate from rooftop cuz it is so good. Every day they are open this happy hour is on :)
The Matheson is proof that I need to spend more time in
The Matheson is proof that I need to spend more time in Healdsburg. It's a fun spot for dinner and drinks. They offer an extensive wine list (on an iPad because there's so many choices), as well as some fun cocktails. I opted for the Foolish Behavior and Chai of the Tiger. Both look identical, by the way. They were both very nice and strong. I expected the Chai of the Tiger to taste more like a sweet chai, but it was subtler. For my starter, I got the scallop crudo. It was tasty, light and came with some sort of berry sauce. I liked it a lot. I got the king salmon for my main, which our server said is one of the most popular menu items. I was originally going to pick the mariscos, but when I saw that the salmon comes with lobster bits, I was sold. The fish was moist and flavorful with a pleasant sear. I'm glad I saved room for dessert because the affogato was amazing. You get a tiny bowl of ice cream, a tiny pitcher of espresso to pour on top of the ice cream and a small peanut butter cookie sandwich with peanut butter in the middle. It was a great mix of salty and sweet, hot and cold. My husband ordered the apple pie for dessert, which came with a small scoop of ice cream. It was also tasty.
Great experience for non - special occasions. Avoid special occasions such as prefix Valentines Day Meals...
The Matheson is typically a 5 star rating on normal dining times. I do not recommend them for special occasions such as Valentines Day... One out of the six small plate offerings were quite good. None of the other offerings met the requirements of fine or gourmet dining at $150.00 plus service charge, plus tip, plus tax. The servers were great as always. The sommelier we had in September was outstanding - he is no longer there. The replacements do not actually do much except ask you what wine you want but cannot tell you what they recommend based on the notes or other things you tell them you want in a wine. So I am not sure why they are called sommeliers. No offense intended, because they tried, but it was evident that they did not know their wines. The food was heavy on cream and meat. The truffle shavings did not taste authentic like when we visited Italy several times. Subpar truffles I suppose. I do highly recommend them for open menu items like their halibut etc. I do not recommend them for special occasions. Mr. Vallete's dad went to visit tables of local or VIP's. Mr. Vallete did the the same. Of course it was noticed by others dining that we were not good enough to have a visit. We were not necessarily offended, but if you only visit certain customers you know, how are you going to find out if what you are doing is mostly universal to other diners? Well, this is all I want to say. I really do not like giving negative reports and anyone who sees what I post on Tripadvisor or other know that I typically praise places for doing a great job. Please dine there for non-special occasions, you will be blown away. Servers and service is great. Ambience is phenomenal. Sommeliers need more training. Stay away from special occasions. Enough said from a couple that used to visit at least once a month.
Great food and staff ruined by the loud music
This is the second time we have been to this restaurant. It is Michelin recommended. The food was excellent as was the staff. Obviously this is a fine dining restaurant and has a very interesting wine dispensing system. My complaint is that the music was so loud I could not hear my daughter beside me and actually had a headache by the time I left. I did mention that to our waiter. She stated she hears that a lot, but the boss likes loud music. There are other good restaurants here, and under the circumstances, we will not return.
Eat before you go
Each of us ordered an appetizer and an entree; we shared an order of milk bread and root vegetables. Three of us ordered drinks as well. When all four of us were still hungry after we ate, that seems wrong. (BTW, we're all petite women who weigh under 120 pounds.) Furthermore, our total bill came to $398 without tip. The bill suggested an 18% tip but included the bar bill and the 2% tip they already imposed on us. In my experience, the bar bill shouldn't be included within the amount to tip against, as the alcohol is already marked up enormously. I dislike the presumption that the minimum tip should be 18% and that they already charged a 2% tip as a default (Back of the house tip?). I'll tip whatever I deem appropriate. So there.
Magnificent
I went Friday, about 5:30PM. No waiting with reservations. I had the Tomato Salad which came with some wonderful soft cheese. Then, I had the Halibut served on top of sauteed veggies. Delicious. I finished with a tasty Strawberry Rhubarb Cheese Cake. I can't remember ever having a better meal. My companions enjoyed the Marscos, Melon Salad and Galette with basil ice cream as much as I enjoyed my meal. Malisa was a delightful server.
Great drinks and vegetarian friendly bites
This is a great spot to have drinks and appetizers in the open area upstairs. I went with my girlfriends for a weekend getaway. We loved the drinks and vegetarian friendly food options. The spot was modern and chic.
Don’t miss!
Loved everything we ordered. Each dish was truly fresh and multifaceted. The components perfectly complemented the main item. We shared the beets, bread, halibut, mariscos, and chocolate dessert. I’d order each one again, except that I’d love to try some other items! Service was impeccable.
Come here to see and be seen drinking wine but eat elsewhere.
We were excited to come for dinner after reading the reviews but were disappointed with so many things. First off, one of us is on a low to no sodium diet and we indicated this twice when making the reservation and again when they sent an email to confirm the reservation. The front desk and the waiter were still totally unaware of our dietary restrictions. Our waiter (Axxxxxxxx) seemed fine at first but an adjacent table had a different waiter (Kevin) and he was excellent. As soon as that table sat down Kevin was very solicitous and helpful and he went through the whole menu explaining all the offerings in just the right amount of detail. Our waiter asked if we needed help with the menu, we explained our dietary issues and then he went silent. We asked him for advice and he seemed either to not be familiar with the menu or not forthcoming with any information. He was a bit clueless as what was in the dishes and had no idea what was salty or not. We ordered the Halibut and asked for no salt. We started with the crudo which is raw fish with some peaches. A bit bland but okay but nothing to rave about. The Halibut with spring peas, the later was hard and undercooked, the fish was bordering on well done so it lost any tenderness that you would expect from fish. All the other elements were definitely salted so either the waiter didn't understand the concept of a diet or the kitchen didn't bother to follow instructions even though the sauces were fortunately served on the side as requested. I had the duck which was over cooked and chewy (I like it like most people, pinkish red, this was greyish pink) and it was to be served with the cracklings. Instead it was served with a compressed square chunk of soft duck skin which tasted mostly of salt. We ordered a dessert but it was so unremarkable, I won't remark on it. The space was quite beautiful which is the main focus of this large airy restaurant it seems. A huge wall of wines, large crowded noisy bar, a very trendy happening place right on the square, it reverberates with people drinking and laughing, perhaps too tipsy to notice the food falls short of the promise.
Very disappointed
While the service and ambience is great the food is a major disappointment. First the menu a wierd assortment of things that don’t go together. We ordered the fish entree and were amassed to see a piece of fish the size of a silver dollar accompanied by thee clams and one shrimp. Lots of tomatoes The desert menu takes the prise for wierd combinations We are world travelers and have enjoyed good restaurants all over the world. This is NOT one of them!
Unfortunately, not as good as we had hoped
We booked a reservation here for 8pm for four for my wife's birthday. Unfortunately, this restaurant experience was not what we had hoped. I'll try and summarize. The dinning room downstairs was beautiful, but was a bit loud. The food was very good, but we felt was not a good value for the price. If you're going to pay $45 to $50+ for just an entree, please include a small amount of bread. Do not "nickel and dime" us with an extra charge. The wine list was awesome and our sommelier was excellent! Our server was not very good. Maybe just an off night, I don't know. She just went through the motions and was not very friendly or informative. That was the worst part of our evening. The restaurant did recognize my wife's birthday with a nice card when we sat down, but then that was it. Nobody, including our server, ever mentioned it again the whole evening, or even wished her a happy birthday. Bummer, as it was my wife's 65th. We would never recommend this place for a special occasion. There are so many good restaurants in Healdsburg, so we will not be going back to this one or recommending it to any of our friends. Too bad, with just a few small adjustments, it could have been very nice.
Innovative food
We ate at the bar and watched the very busy, diligent and dedicated staff prepare amazing food -- it was fun and fascinating, a new perspective on fine dining. My husband had "the best steak of his life," but as someone who prefers vegetarian cuisine the offerings were very limited for me. The staff and the chef went out of their way to accommodate me once they learned my preferences -- no bacon in the (excellent) corn soup, and a special appetizer prepared just for me. The bar upstairs is supposed to be wonderful, but we didn't check it out -- next time!

I have a notice stating that my bid has been accepted and is awaiting transfer. The reservation is for the 18th, but the “moderator” said he will confirm booking by the 28th. Is this an indicator that I may not have a reservation?

Hey @EvocativeFold67, welcome to appointmenttrader! Once the reservation is in your portfolio, you definitely own the timeslot, the review team would not have approved the trade if the reservation wasn't confirmed - so you are going :-) Judging from your post you bid today and are going tomorrow - don't worry as long as you initiated the name transfer, you are good - the transfer service has to work with the opening hours of the reservation team of the respective venue. You will likely see the transfer confirmation a couple hours before your reservation time.
