My wife and I recently decided to book Sunday lunch at The Pig on the Beach for the return trip home from a weekend in nearby Swanage, and to celebrate her birthday* It's a fantastic location in a beautiful building. Our table was in the centre of a large conservatory, which forms the main part of the restaurant. We opted for still water, which was served in a plain bottle and therefore assumed to be from the tap, until it later appeared on the bill as 'Belu' - maybe, but why would any restaurant go to the trouble of removing branding that would validate the charge? We ordered a glass of red wine and a carafe of white. A glass of each then arrived, so we asked again for the carafe, only to be brought yet another glass of white. The increasingly irritated waiter finally produced the carafe, from which he poured two glasses in addition to the glass of red already on the table, thereby serving three glasses of wine to the two of us. I don't know who was the most confused. The starters: the cured meats were a nice texture and flavour but needed a side order of bread to be palatable; the 'marinated' beetroot was under seasoned, chunky and bland. For mains, the pollock was good although a couple of the minimal potatoes were well overdone. Then there was the rack of roast pork. The waiter had mentioned the pork would be cooked a certain way when taking my order, and would I be happy with that. I naively agreed without properly listening, in the belief it couldn't be anything other than perfect; however, whilst the crackling was very good, none of the remaining fat (and there was a lot of it) was anywhere near rendered. Perhaps other Pig clientele would be able to recognise some elitist form of preparation - for me, it fell short of ordinary. Nothing was so obviously bad it had to be sent back, it was all just consistently disappointing - gastropub with fine dining pomposity. I didn't query anything and paid up in full, including service charge. We were there to enjoy ourselves first and foremost, and having to tolerate mediocrity at all is disruptive enough without running a list of complaints. Of course, that's the typical English reserve such pretentiousness thrives upon, enabling 'name' restaurants to charge excessively for style while delivering little of substance to those who quietly pay every time. £80 a head for a barely average lunch is a painful reminder that pricey menus are as likely to be a guarantee of straightforward overcharging as any kind of quality, often accompanied by impersonal service desperately trying to appear formal and 'high end'. Give it a name: the Pig Principle. There were clearly some happy customers who would most likely view that as unfair, and that we just got unlucky. I consider it an expensive lesson and won't be getting burned a second time. *a fact that was wheedled out of me whilst confirming the booking. My wife was wished a perfunctory 'happy birthday' as we were shown to the table - end of. Why bother asking?
