Note: I originally sent this as an email to the restaurant hoping to get some kind of response. I never got one. I do not like to write reviews like this and very rarely have, but I'm sharing this here because the upcharge and food and service missteps were so egregious I had to.On Valentine's night, I ended up here with a date. They paid. Between the set menu at $140 per person, plus wine, tax and tip, the bill would have been close to (or possibly topped) $500. For that price, everything should be perfect. I don't care how busy the night is. I worked in high-end restaurants for over a decade, and what we experienced that night was honestly unforgivable. Here's what went right: The ambiance was lovely. It's a unique and beautiful space . The staff was pleasant (if not especially good at their jobs). Extra kudos to a man named Chris who constantly tried to go the extra mile for us. He's a keeper and should be promoted. At the end of our meal, a complimentary glass of bubbly was a nice touch, but at that point, we'd drunk about as much as we could trying to make up for the bad food and subpar service. Here's what went very wrong:While we were offered water almost immediately after being seated, it took a very, very long before anyone asked us if we'd like to order drinks. I'm going to estimate 12 minutes. That's a complete and utter fail on the first rule of service. We ordered from the set menu and waited. And waited. The scallop appetizer, when it finally arrived, was cold. And I don't even mean lukewarm. I did not want my date to know (he'd have felt bad), so I didn't alert our server at the table. I could tell that it was cooked, so I ate the scallop itself so my date wouldn't wonder what was wrong and left the rest of it. I excused myself to the restroom, and on my way there, I flagged one of the employees familiar with our table and quietly asked them to please make sure the rest of our food came out hot. He apologized and promised me it would.Next came the lobster bisque -- tasty, but barely warm. I started to lose hope.Third: the main course. I ordered the duck. The vegetable was delicious, but the duck itself was very poorly prepared. Rather than a crisp sear on the skin, it was rubbery, and the meat was so tough that I had to ask for a steak knife to cut it. When the steak knife finally came (several minutes later -- literally nothing happened quickly all night), it was dull and didn't cut the duck any better. Rather than fight with my plate, I gave up. I think I had three bites total. And finally, the desserts were just... so underwhelming. My date commented that the chocolate cake reminded him of a Hostess Ho-Ho. I'm writing this as someone who worked in the service industry at high-end restaurants for over ten years in both Chicago and Los Angeles, just to give you a sense of my reference for great food and top-notch service. I appreciate what it takes to handle Valentine's day with all the two-top madness, and I'm taking that into account. It's one of the toughest nights of the year. But that's no excuse mistake after mistake, ESPECIALLY AT THIS PRICE POINT. (I visited the regular menu, and on a normal night, what we ate would cost no more than $100 per person. So that's a 40% upcharge. Obscene.)If you are going to put that kind of price on a meal, there is no excuse for it to not be excellent.
