The Royal Washington Reviews from The Last Year

I was in town for a few days and staying in the area so I walked over here to do some work on a Friday morning. The inside and outside are both cute and aesthetically pleasing. I was pleasantly greeted at the door and had my choice of seating. I started with a latte and house biscuit with house jams- delicious! Towards lunch I ordered the Brussels sprouts & the pork belly dishes - both amazing!! After lunch I transitioned to a cocktail, the Aguardiente y Limon, which I also liked, it was refreshing. I will definitely be back when I'm in town. Highly recommend!
This spot is on an unassuming block of Florida Ave.
It isn't in an area of the Shaw neighborhood that tends to house a lot of DC's nightlife or usual rambunctious activity, but that doesn't take away from the charm of this spot. I experienced my first time dining here earlier today. When I walked in, I was a little out of sorts but the server who greeted me did so with a smile and hospitality. I didn't have a reservation but she reassured me that one wasn't necessarily needed. I chose this spot because I hadn't been and I was meeting a friend for the first time in a while. We sat inside because today's weather seemed unpredictable. I ordered an Arepa that turned out to be a bit bigger than I thought it would've been and a chicken sandwich that came with fries. The Arepa was enough so if you end up ordering one, know that you might not need to order a full meal after. I also had an Old Fashioned as a drink and the one they made was good. I've been to places where the bitters that are added can taste overwhelming but not so with this one. The ambiance was good for a Sunday and in an area where brunch is like a festival. If you'd like to go out on a Sunday in DC but want to avoid the typically large brunch crowds, this low key spot will be satisfying. Good food, good service, and a good atmosphere!

The food was absolutely amazing, however, the service, or lack thereof was awful. My friend and I sat outside in a section with only 4 tables. We understood that there were no set servers and that we should order through the QR code. However, a server came in and out of our section multiple times and addressed every other table except ours. We received the complimentary cups of water, but as she came to each table and brought them a bottle of water to refill their cups she didn't come to our table. She came by and cleared the plates of the other tables, but didn't come to ours. She even spoke to the other restaurant patrons but wouldn't even look at us. I spoke to the manager and she essentially told me that I didn't know what I was talking about and this behavior was acceptable because you all use the QR code system to fill tabs. I've been to other restaurants that use the same system, but I have never been purposefully ignored by the only server to come in and out of our section multiple times. I don't think it is a coincidence that we also happened to be the only all-black table in this section. Your restaurant is placed in a majority-black neighborhood, but having servers who intentionally disregard black patrons is unacceptable. I found it appalling that the manager also didn't see anything wrong with her behavior. As I said, the food was amazing. We even tipped before receiving any food or water. However, I couldn't understand why the server was courteous to every table around us, yet she wouldn't even look me in the eye.
A wonderful time this place was with shaded outdoor
A wonderful time this place was with shaded outdoor seating, nice views from the windows and a homely feel that makes you want to get coffee and cocktails which is exactly what we did. The drinks were amazing, strong and ohhh soo cute. The fries are fresh I suggest adding the queso to your order. The empanadas were to die for soo crispy and I fell in love with the green dipping sauce I think I could eat it on anything! They have QR codes on the table that makes it easy to order and pay for food. Our server was so knowledgeable of the menu and gave us great suggestions that made my first time here sooo memorable. Come with friends or as many others were doing just to study. Reservations are encouraged.
Lovely place.
Stopped in for a quick meal before a show at The Pocket. They have nice seating is outside and heaters too. Not a fan of online ordering but alas.... My dining partners both got the other half IPA. I got a choose your own liquor cocktail with gin. ( Most of their cocktails have mezcal or tequila which I don't drink) I love their grilled avocado and we got two to share. It's a game changer for those who have never had a grilled avocado and also is vegan! It's on a bed of quinoa and lentils. I love how most dishes have pickled onions and fresh herbs. We also got the brussel sprouts, pork belly, gnocchi and cheese arepa. Everything is made with quality ingredients and tastefully prepared. Easy to share and worked for the three of us of which one is vegetarian and one is dairy free. I highly recommend this spot.
First off, the food and drinks were amazing.
We went big with PARILLADA, fried avocado, fries, and cocktails. The blend of meat and seafood with veggies & sauces were amazing. However, what's missing is the science of dining. Every order is via online. Last time I checked the pandemic is over. I tried to space out drinks, apps, and dinner but it was all over the place. In the end, I'm staring at a table full of plates, a bill that contains a 4% surcharge, someone not offering dessert, and decision on gratuity. I walked out taking care of the staff but with an empty and totally disconnected experience.

This place is so cute!!! Met a friend here for lunch during the week and it wasn't busy at all. There were people at the bar drinking and reading a book and I am most definitely adding that to my agenda next time. I didn't realize that you could also come here and do work, which is great! The food was absolutely delicious. I was sad they were out of their grilled avocado but I had the bird dog which was super filling and delicious for the price. Their happy hour prices are even better! Highly recommend. Also, thank you, thank you, thank you for the transparent service fee! Not every restaurant is transparent about this, so when one is I am very appreciative!

Booked our table for 4 online and we were early so they let us get drinks at the bar and then transferred it to our tab. The staff were awesome and attentive. You order and pay from the QR code and service was quick. My friend ordered the Cherry Blossom Cold Brew (cherry blossom, tart cherry, cardamom, colombian) and loved it. I got the Open Sesame which is a tasty decaf option. We also hot a guava pastry for the table, egg sandwiches, and Calentado. Everyone loved their food. I know I'm going to daydream about that egg sandwich because i'm from out of town and I'll probably be a long time before I have one again! It wasn't too busy on a Sunday morning at 1 but I would book a table in case. It's nice that it wasn't noisy. Also I love their decor and cute bathrooms! The beer handles behind the bar are so unique.
Fun all-day cafe
I came here for an afternoon cocktail and snack. Got the papaya mani and it was so tasty! The cheese arepas were great too. The atmosphere is very eclectic and casual. I want to come back in the morning to try their coffee.

Omg! The food was fantastic! We have the luxury of staying at an air bnb directly across the street. A yelp search for great matcha identified The Royal so we decided to check it out. The space is cozy and beautifully decorated, the lattes are worthy of the high rating and the food was delicious - especially the cinnamon bun! Our server was helpful and accommodating! We will definitely be back!
Ten out of Ten: Best Meal in Years
Likely the best meal I’ve had this year! The Royal exceeded my expectations when I had a date night on October 27th. We started our meal with a signature cocktail combined with the roasted pork belly over street corn and the roasted Brussels sprouts. The pork belly dish was so well prepared and tasty that it reminded me that food can truly be a culinary art. The pork was crispy yet meaty enough to complement the seasoning and corn. It was too delicious to share. After these two dishes we dove into three more dishes. 1) masa gnocchis 2) beef arepa and 3) the carrot cake for dessert. The gnocchi was handmade and was flavorful and not overly seasoned or sauced allowing the flavor of the gnocchi to come out. The beef arepa was so fresh and so well put together that this again reminded me of why The Royal is a Michelin star restaurant. The beef arepa had fresh avocado, cheese and shredded beef with a lime to bring out the flavor further. The carrot cake was light in sweetness and had a balance of creamy and spiced cake prepared pretty and portion appropriate. Again the Royal had a focus on truly unpretentious food reminding me that culinary arts combined with great service creates a pleasurable experience. This was evident when the chef came to the table and we had a great exchange making us feel even more welcomed.
So close!
Incredible atmosphere! Friendly staff. Food was phenomenal. I would compare it to a Tapas bar. As a couple, we 3 entrees. The Pork Belly Empanadas, Grilled Shrimp with Mango salsa, and a Grilled Avocado over pickled onions. The have 4 Michelin are for a reason!! Check this place out, you won’t regret it.
