The Salty Monk Sidmouth Reviews from The Last Year
Perfect!
Beautiful place, so relaxing. Annette & Andy are lovely. Delicious meals if you want to eat here. Amazing breakfast. The rooms are spotlessly clean, delicious home made biscuits. Nothing is too much trouble for them. Thank you Would highly recommend.
Average
We were expecting an amazing stay after reading the reviews but were left a little underwhelmed. Nothing majorly negative to say but we were only there for one night. We stayed in the Bluebell Room, where the bed was nice and comfy. Very clean room, nice and cosy on a cold evening. The drip, drip, drip from the overflow outside the door was a bit annoying, but like I say for one night not a biggie. The only thing I would say to the owners is that if you're not happy with Booking.com then don't advertise there. We were greeted with a bit of a rant which put a bit of a dampener on our stay tbh.
Disappointed
We visited as non-residents because of a Michelin guide entry. The bar area and restaurant were beautiful. We decided on the four course menu. Unfortunately we did not really enjoy anything. A tomato soup with popcorn was ok, although it didn’t taste of tomato. The varied breads were all fluffy with no salt, ironic given the name of the establishment. We were then given four large “small” plates, which were at best passable but after that we were full. My husband then had a bland chicken with strange fried cheese croquettes that he stopped eating early in. I had fish gougons which were nice but came with a stack of rough cut chips and some peas in a sauce so spicy I couldn’t eat it. We passed on the desserts which all looked beige and had some take away truffle packs. The chap serving was lovely and accommodating. The website claimed it had lost its AA rosettes because of cost. We suspect it’s because of the food quality. It’s fine if you want a pub meal in a lovely setting, but we were hoping for some finer dining.
Highly recommended dog-friendly restaurant with rooms.
We enjoyed our stay at the Salty Monk very much, as did our dog who was made very welcome. The food is really exceptional: seasonal, imaginative and truly delicious. Breakfast (pre-ordered to avoid food waste) was delicious, as was dinner on both evenings we ate there. a very comfortable room, with everything that we (and our dog) could have wanted. Highly recommended.
trying hard
Went for dinner very limited menu no red meat for mains apart from lasagne and at £65 per head plus wine I think its not great value. The starters are just too much they would be better cutting its size but upping the quality. The wine list is ok . service was good.
Perfect stay at The Salty Monk
Was highly recommended so we decided to stay over to properly enjoy the multi course taster menu for our anniversary. Couldn’t be more impressed. Superb food and an excellent wine list to accompany. Perfect hosts who really care about seeing their guests happy. Room was toasty, well appointed and even had its own outdoor space which would have been ideal if we’d brought our doggo too. Can see why they won Best Breakfast Award too. I don’t think we need to eat for a couple of days! Thank you Andy, Annette and Adam. Can’t wait to visit again,
A very special meal
We have just had an excellent meal at the Salty Monk. We were welcomed and shown to our table in a warm, and relaxing restaurant, instantly felt relaxed. The menu was varied and interesting. We choose from the 4 course menu. The “ small plates” as starters were delicious, so nice to have sharing dishes so you can try a little of everything. The bread was homemade, warm and fresh , and again utterly moorish. Our main course and pudding also delicious. We all felt that it was good value for a very special meal.
Wonderful Restaurant with rooms
We have just got home from a lovely relaxing and comfortable stay at the Salty Monk. We’ve stayed in Sidmouth several times in the last 6 years, but had never stayed there. As we now have a small dog, we thought it sounded great given its proximity to The Byes (great dog walking). We really weren’t disappointed. Our room was bright and clean and there was everything we and our dog could need, plus a few treats for each of us. Our hosts were friendly to both to us and our dog. The atmosphere was so good, at breakfast the other guests chatted to us with Annette and Andy the owners/chef. It felt so relaxed and comfortable. And the food, we’ll that really was outstanding. Breakfast was a feast with so much to chose from. We also had dinner in the restaurant last night which was exceptional. All in all a wonderful couple of nights away which we hope to replicate soon.
The Salty Monk is a real treat
Pros - We were warmly welcomed , our room was very comfortable and stylish.Breakfast was a delight and we also enjoyed supper one night- Excellent cooking. .The Salty Monk was a lovely place to stay, very friendly and efficiently run. There is a delightful garden and outside seating which because of the weather we did not use. We don’t usually stay in such a luxurious place and it was a real treat . Thank you. Cons- Loo and shower was very clean and attractive but a little challenging as there was nothing to hold onto if you are disabled However the owner provided me with a chair to use in the shower and was very helpful in suggesting a mobility shop in Sidmouth we could hire things from .
Best breakfast found here!
Excellent breakfast: great choices, well-cooked and so generous that we didn't need lunch(!). Friendly hosts. Some problems with internet access in the room, owing to local infrastructure rather than the hotel itself - 'welcome to Devon'.... Good location, ideal for exploring Sidmouth or further into Devon.

I have a notice stating that my bid has been accepted and is awaiting transfer. The reservation is for the 18th, but the “moderator” said he will confirm booking by the 28th. Is this an indicator that I may not have a reservation?

Hey @EvocativeFold67, welcome to appointmenttrader! Once the reservation is in your portfolio, you definitely own the timeslot, the review team would not have approved the trade if the reservation wasn't confirmed - so you are going :-) Judging from your post you bid today and are going tomorrow - don't worry as long as you initiated the name transfer, you are good - the transfer service has to work with the opening hours of the reservation team of the respective venue. You will likely see the transfer confirmation a couple hours before your reservation time.
